Separate Calcination in Cement Clinker Production : A laboratory scale study on how an electrified separate calcination step affects the phase composition of cement clinker

Vikström, Amanda January 2021 (has links)
Cement production is responsible for around 7% of the global anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. More than half of these emissions are due to the unavoidable release of carbon dioxide upon thermal decomposition of the main raw material limestone. Many different options for carbon capture are currently being investigated to lower emissions, and one potential route to facilitate carbon capture could be the implementation of an electrified separate calcination step. However, potential effects on the phase composition of cement clinker need to be investigated, which is the aim of the present study. Phases of special interest are alite, belite, aluminate, ferrite, calcite, and lime.  The phase composition during clinker formation was examined through HT-XRD lab-scale experiments, allowing the phase transformations to be observed in situ. Two different methods of separate calcination were investigated, one method in which the raw meal was calcined separately, and one method where the limestone was calcined separately. The former yielded an alite amount similar to that of the reference experiments, whereas the latter method yielded a lower amount. It could, unfortunately, not be excluded that the difference was due to poor experimental conditions, and additional experiments are needed to investigate the matter further. The study does, however, indicate that a calcined raw meal might be used to produce a clinker of similar phase composition concerning major phases belite, aluminate, ferrite, alite, and free lime. A raw meal containing calcined limestone might, however, need longer residence time at clinkering temperature too obtain similar phase composition. In addition, a raw meal containing calcined limestone was observed to be carbonated to a greater extent upon reheating than a calcined raw meal. Further experiments are needed to fully understand the effects on clinker composition of an electrified separate calcination step, and several improvements to the experimental method are given in the study.

For Six Sigma / Design and Construction of Oars to a Gig Boat : Design For Six Sigma

Molin, Mattias, Larsson, Adam January 2023 (has links)
The oar has historically played a significant role for Sweden as a lake andcostal dominated country. For many years small boats called “snipa” wereused to gather fish by people living along the coastlines or alongside lakes.Oars was then the only option for conveying the boat forward. In today’ssociety, oar-propelled boats don’t have the same importance for people toacquire food. However, there are still reasons for a continued use of oars inactivities such as private fishing, competitive rowing or outdoor pursuits. The consumer market today is largely focused on mass production ofproducts, which often results in a reduced availability of custom-made ones.Being able to “engineer to order” is sometimes preferable due to the fact thathigh-quality and robust designs are, in certain respects, essential.Linnaeus University is conducting a research project that has vitalized atraditional Sami hunting and fishing gig boat, designed to be conveyed byoars and requires specially adapted oars for two different types of waterconditions. Currently, private consumers have limited options, for productsthat is designed for this, on the market. The purpose of this work is to describe how the established and well-knownmethodology of Systems Engineering, more specific “Design For SixSigma” (DMADOV), can be used to design and construct oars for use in twodifferent water conditions.

[pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO DO CLÍNQUER E COMPORTAMENTO FÍSICO-MECÂNICO DO CIMENTO / [en] CHARACTERIZATION OF CLINKER AND PHYSICAL - MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF CEMENT

REGINA PAULA BALDEZ TRINTA 19 May 2020 (has links)
[en] Currently, the cement industry uses the coprocessing of industries residues as raw materials or alternative fuel for attending economics and the sustainability aspects. This procedure can introduce a variety of minor elements that can affect the clinkerization reactions by producing morphological changes of the clinker crystals and changing the surface tension and viscosity. Thus, mineralogic and microstrutural characterizations are necessary to understand the clinker reactivity and its effect on the Portland cement properties. Nonetheless, the number of clinquer kiln control variables is enormous, and it is proposed to use the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to choose the most important ones. The X-ray diffraction characterization of the clinker showed that the four major constituents are consistent with the theorical values (Bogue potentials). The C3S phase was monoclinic, which is usual for industrial clinkers, and the C3A phase was usually cubic. These results suggest that the formation of a high reactivity clinker. The physico-mechanical characterizations setting time and compressive strength of the Portland cement were conducted according to NBR 16607 and NBR 7215 ABNT norms. The Portland Cement results agreed with the NBR 16697 ABNT norm.

Lafrenière Archambault, Luce 12 1900 (has links)
According to the popular image of the Vikings, this people embodied a spirit of immense solidarity that resisted the yoke of Christianity and the dominance of Latin in Western Europe. This image is not without its contradictions, and while it is true that writing was unknown in Scandinavia during the early centuries of the Viking expansion, we now know that trade and colonization, as much as their famous raids, motivated the irruption of the Scandinavian people on the medieval stage. However, there is an important area where the contradictions between the image of the Vikings and archaeological data still remain intact : the Vikings ships. These ships were designed for traders, settlers, fishermen and warriors. Like the Vikings themselves, their ships reflect a genius of unparallelled originality and high performance. How did the Vikings build their ships, conferring them with such impressive symmetry, balance and finesse? The first ethnologists who studied this issue favoured ideal notions of traditions compiled over generations of builders, along with simple tips for balancing portside and starboard. Following this reductive cultural representation, they then quickly turned to the essential elements of clinker built construction: use of split planks and a great number of iron rivets, evidence of a new metallurgy. The problem with these ships is that, while their construction is made using traditional methods fitting to the popular image of the Vikings, their architectural design, deriving from very refined knowledge, contradicts the idea of an illiterate medieval Scandinavia cut off from the main centres of learning. This work focuses on the architectural design of Scandinavian ships from the eighth to the eleventh century, to show their place in high European knowledge. It then seeks to understand the links between the theoretical and practical aspects of Vikings ships : the clinker built construction and a great homogeneity over more than five centuries. Analysis of the master frames of five wrecks – three Viking ships, one Ancient wreck and a pre-Viking Scandinavian vessel – has found positive indicators of the use of geometric design principles that were formerly thought to be original in Renaissance shipbuilding treatises. Each wreck showed signs of the application of these design principles. The results show moreover that it was possible to use a transverse system of hull design for ships that were built shell-first in the clinker style.

Strategies for the minimization of CO2 emissions from concrete.

Oliveira, Vanessa Carina Heinrichs Chirico 29 May 2015 (has links)
Most of concretes CO2 emissions originate from cement production. The traditional strategy for minimizing the CO2 footprint of concrete has favored the degree of clinker replacement. This paper examines the impact of this strategy and also the influence of the choice of the cement supplier based on the fuel composition in cement production, the variation of cement usage in concretes of the same strength and the standard deviation of the production process of concrete based on the control of its production process. The method of work uses data from literature, technical standards and data from a concrete central. The traditional strategy of the choice of cement type based on its clinker content is insufficient due to the extensive and overlapping clinker content range of different cement types allowed in Brazilian technical standards. At the present time, it is estimated that the cement industry utilizes all of the blast furnace slag generated in the country and nearly all quality fly ash. Consequently, if there is an increase in the demand for cement, there is an increase in clinker production, and the rate of additions to the clinker decreases, respecting the extensive limits permitted by technical standards. In this scenario, the selection of blast furnace slag cement and fly ash cement does not necessarily offer environmental benefits to the country as a whole and does not demonstrate a global impact, despite the possibility of benefiting specific construction sites. The substitution of the fuel mix for coal from planted forest wood can lower the portion of cement emissions due to fuel burning from 350 kg to 10 kg of CO2 per tonne of clinker produced. The efficiency of the concrete mix formulation shows great potential to lower the amount of cement usage in concrete, thus lowering the total CO2 emissions of concrete. The data presented point to a variation of more than 100% of cement content in concretes of the same strength. The influence of the standard deviation of the production process shows smaller impact on lowering concrete CO2 emissions shows that there is a maximum potential of 13% of lowering cement content in concrete. The combination of the four strategies studied demonstrates the complexity of concretes emissions and the great potential for mitigating its CO2 emissions. The need for information on cements specific emissions, its clinker content and fuel mix, the concrete mix formulation and the variability of the production process of concrete show that there is, for concrete raw material suppliers as well as concrete producers and users, a lot to be done to minimize the emissions of this widely consumed material.

Vliv oxidu barnatého na tvorbu a vlastnosti portlandského slínku / The influence of barium oxide on the formation and properties of portland clinker

Zezulová, Anežka January 2014 (has links)
Portland clinker is thanks to its large-scale production a continuously studied topic. Clinker, or Portland cement, is used for construction purposes, or for insulation and special applications. One of these special applications could be shielding of different types of radiation by making use of the content of barium ions. The present master’s thesis examines the influence of barium oxide on the formation and properties of Portland clinker, which could be, by incorporation of barium ions into the system, used as a binder for buildings resistant to various types of radiation. Barium sulfate and barium carbonate were added to the raw meal in order to prepare clinkers with different content of barium oxide. The effect of barium on the formation of clinker phases was studied (by XRD – Rietveld analysis and by the microscopic point integration), as well as the effects on the variations of temperature of the phase formation (TG-DTA) and the rate of alite formation under isothermal conditions. Furthermore, the ability of barium to become a part of clinker minerals was studied by SEM with EDS, and the solubility of barium phases by ICP-OES. The hydration of clinker minerals containing barium was studied by isothermal calorimetry.

Tichý, Richard 05 November 2010 (has links)
