The Impact of Role Identity Transitions and Coping Functions on Customer Citizenship Behavior

Despite numerous research studies on the antecedents of customer citizenship behavior (CCB; activities that customers voluntarily perform to help the firm and other customers, customers' role identity transitions remain unexplored as a possible antecedent in services marketing research. Previous research in customer co-production has shown that CCB increases service quality, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty. Therefore, understanding why some customers may perform higher levels of CCB than others is important. Using role salience theory, this dissertation contributes to the CCB literature by investigating the influence of customers' role identity transitions (i.e., gaining role identities vs. losing role identities) on CCB. Furthermore, it attempts to explain these effects by examining two mediating processes. First, increased life stress is proposed as a consequence of customers’ role identity transitions. Second, drawing from psychological stress and coping theory, it is proposed that customers employ distinct coping functions (i.e., problem-focused vs. emotion-focused coping) to reduce the effect of life stress they experienced. Lastly, this dissertation predicts that CCB is a way for customers to cope with their life stress. Using structural equation modeling, this dissertation provides support for the proposition that customers who experience role identity transitions are more likely to perform CCB than customers who do not. The results also support the proposition that customers who experience role identity transitions tend to have increased life stress and that customers who lose their role identities tend to have more life stress than those who gain role identities. Contrary to the proposition, customers were found to use emotion-focused coping rather than problem-focused coping when faced with both types of role identity transitions. As predicted, CCB is shown as a way for customers to cope with life stress resulting from role identity transitions.

O impacto da co-produção na satisfação através do controle percebido

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal investigar o papel da co-produção como antecedente do controle percebido e a influência deste na satisfação. Informação e escolha de reembolso também são investigadas como potenciais antecedentes do controle percebido, uma vez que co-produção, informação e escolha são consideradas, respectivamente, formas de controle comportamental, cognitivo e de decisão. O controle comportamental refere-se a uma influência direta do indivíduo no ambiente. O controle cognitivo refere-se à interpretação de um indivíduo sobre um evento e tem o ganho de informação como um subtipo de controle. O controle de decisão representa a oportunidade de escolher entre diferentes tipos de ação. Esses três tipos de controle são considerados capazes de aumentar a percepção de controle dos consumidores. Acredita-se que o aumento de controle percebido, por sua vez, é capaz de elevar os níveis de satisfação dos consumidores. Sugere-se ainda que a auto-eficácia e o desejo por controle poderiam influenciar a relação entre controle percebido e satisfação, implicando em maiores níveis de satisfação quando consumidores apresentam maiores níveis de auto-eficácia e de desejo por controle. Dois estudos experimentais de desenho fatorial e intersujeitos foram conduzidos para testar as hipóteses formuladas no capítulo de fundamentação teórica. O primeiro estudo contou com a participação de 97 estudantes de uma universidade brasileira, manipulando co-produção e informação na oferta de uma viagem de férias, enquanto que o segundo contou com 90 estudantes de uma universidade francesa, manipulando co-produção e escolha de reembolso na oferta de uma escrivaninha. A análise dos resultados mostra que co-produção, informação e escolha de reembolso influenciam positivamente a percepção de controle e que esta, por sua vez, afeta de maneira positiva a satisfação. Os estudos não apresentaram suporte para as hipóteses envolvendo moderação da auto-eficácia e do desejo por controle na relação entre controle percebido e satisfação. Esses resultados possuem implicações gerenciais e acadêmicas que são discutidas no capítulo de considerações finais, abrindo espaço para futuras pesquisas sobre o tema. / The main purpose of this research is to investigate the role of co-production as an antecedent of perceived control and the latter’s influence on satisfaction. Information and refund choice are also investigated as potential antecedents of perceived control since coproduction, information, and choice are considered as behavioral, cognitive and decisional control, respectively. Behavioral control refers to an individual’s response which may directly influence the environment. Cognitive control refers to an individual’s interpretation of an event and it presents information gain as a control subtype. Decisional control represents the opportunity to choose among different courses of action. It is considered that these three types of control may enhance consumers’ perception of control. The increase in perceived control, in turn, is capable of raising consumers’ satisfaction levels. In the last chapter, we discuss managerial and academic implications, making room for future research on the theme.

Design and Evaluation of a Concentrating Solar Power System with Thermochemical Water Splitting Process for the Co-production of Hydrogen and Electricity

abstract: Thermodynamic development and balance of plant study is completed for a 30 MW solar thermochemical water splitting process that generates hydrogen gas and electric power. The generalized thermodynamic model includes 23 components and 45 states. Quasi-steady state simulations are completed for design point system sizing, annual performance analysis and sensitivity analysis. Detailed consideration is given to water splitting reaction kinetics with governing equations generalized for use with any redox-active metal oxide material. Specific results for Ceria illustrate particle reduction in two solar receivers for target oxygen partial pressure of 10 Pa and particle temperature of 1773 K at a design point DNI of 900 W/m2. Sizes of the recuperator, steam generator and hydrogen separator are calculated at the design point DNI to achieve 100,000 kg of hydrogen production per day from the plant. The total system efficiency of 39.52% is comprised of 50.7% hydrogen fraction and 19.62% electrical fraction. Total plant capital costs and operating costs are estimated to equate a hydrogen production cost of $4.40 per kg for a 25-year plant life. Sensitivity analysis explores the effect of environmental parameters and design parameters on system performance and cost. Improving recuperator effectiveness from 0.7 to 0.8 is a high-value design modification resulting in a 12.1% decrease in hydrogen cost for a modest 2.0% increase in plant $2.85M. At the same time, system efficiency is relatively inelastic to recuperator effectiveness because 81% of excess heat is recovered from the system for electricity production 39 MWh/day and revenue is $0.04 per kWh. Increasing water inlet pressure up to 20 bar reduces the size and cost of super heaters but further pressure rises increasing pump at a rate that outweighs super heater cost savings. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Mechanical Engineering 2018

Negotiating Healthy Self-Government: A Grounded Theory Study of Interactions in Arizona's WIC Program

abstract: Individual behavior change is a goal of many public policies directed at people of low socioeconomic status. Without evidence of behavioral change, these policies cannot be considered a success: a process of co-production where some level of cooperation between the client and program administrators is required to successfully meet program objectives. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), is one example of a co-production design. WIC encourages women to engage in healthy behaviors by providing healthy food along with nutrition education to improve the health status of low-income families. However, while WIC is one of the most studied nutrition programs, little attention has been paid to the nutrition education portion or to interactions between staff members and participants. This research draws on the public policy and administration literature about street-level bureaucrats and co-production, which provides a framework for understanding the purposeful, inter-dependent relationships between front-line service providers and clients. However, neither literature explicates the process of interactions that is expected to lead to client behavior change and co-production. The primary contribution of this research is the creation of a grounded theory that identifies and explains the WIC interaction process as one of "negotiating healthy self-government". Based on analysis of three months of observations of WIC encounters in two clinics, this research finds that participants and staff members enter into tacit and explicit negotiations concerning the degree to which participants should govern their family's nutrition-related behavior. Clients actively shape the interactions by demonstrating their discipline and efforts to feed their families, while staff members refine and reinforce self-governing behaviors through assessing action, and providing advice to ensure behaviors meet recommendations. Finally, participants and staff members distinctly link self-governing behavior to identity: "good mothers" feed their children healthy food and govern their behaviors to meet nutritional recommendations. Coprodução na Educação Pública: estudo de escolas públicas estaduais paulistas / Co-production in Public Education: study of state schools in São Paulo

Essa pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar as diferentes possibilidades de envolvimento da comunidade escolar, aqui entendida como o grupo composto por professores, funcionários, estudantes, familiares e diretores, no gerenciamento da escola, sob a perspectiva da coprodução e da gestão democrática. Há diferentes modos como um estudante ou parente pode impactar a escola, entretanto a escolha foi por explorar a possibilidade de coprodução nas escolas públicas estaduais de São Paulo, analisando a dinâmica de relacionamento entre funcionários públicos, pais e estudantes dentro das categorias da coprodução, dentre elas pessoas como recursos, solidariedade, e participação. É ainda analisada a ideia de gestão democrática nas escolas públicas, seu conceito e componentes e sua relação com o conceito de coprodução, especialmente considerando a importância da primeira na organização formal da estrutura de participação nas escolas públicas. A metodologia utilizada foi o estudo de caso, por meio de entrevistas, pesquisa bibliográfica, e análise da pesquisa recentemente publica pela Secretaria de Estado de Educação de São Paulo sobre gestão democrática. Considerando os dados acumulados, pode-se concluir que existem iniciativas classificadas dentro dos níveis mais básicos de coprodução. A estrutura formal da gestão democrática dentro das escolas públicas contribui para o estabelecimento de novas dinâmicas que propiciam um sistema mais favorável à coprodução, porém esta pode ser encontrada dentro e fora dessas instâncias de participação formal. Recentemente, propostas de mudança do sistema educacional estimularam o envolvimento de estudantes nas escolas, porém é preciso aumentar fatores como identidade e solidariedade de grupo para estimular a coprodução, sendo ainda necessário promover mudanças no modo como funcionários públicos e comunidade escolar como um todo percebem seus respectivos papeis na gestão pública / The research had as objective to explore the different possibilities of involvement of school community, hereby understood as the group composed by teachers, staff, students, familiars and headmaster, in the school management. There are different ways in which a student or parent can have an impact in the school however the decision was to explore the possibility of co-production in the public schools in the state of Sao Paulo, analyzing the relationship dynamics between civil servants, parents and students against categories of co-production, such as people as resources, solidarity, participation, among others. It also analyzed the idea of democratic management in the schools, its framework and components in their relation to the concept of co-production, especially considering the importance of the latter in the formal organization of the participation structure in the public schools. The methodology utilized was the case study, with interviews, bibliographical research, and analysis of the recent research published by the Education Secretary of the State of Sao Paulo about democratic management. Given the data accumulated, the result is that there are initiatives that can be considered in the lower levels of co-production. The legal framework that stimulates citizen involvement in the schools contribute to the creation of new dynamics that stimulate a system more favorable to co-production, however it can happen inside and outside these formal instances of participation. Recent proposed changes to the education system increased the involvement of students in the schools, however there is a need to increase identity and group solidarity to stimulate co-production, and it is also necessary to promote changes to how civil servants and school community as a whole perceive their respective roles in the public management

Opportunities for knowledge co-production across the energy-food-water nexus: Making interdisciplinary approaches work for better climate decision making

The relationship between the energy-food-water nexus and the climate is non-linear, multi-sectoral and time sensitive, incorporating aspects of complexity and risk in climate related decision-making. This paper seeks to explore how knowledge co-production can help identify opportunities for building more effective, sustainable, inclusive and legitimate decision making processes on climate change. This would enable more resilient responses to climate risks impacting the nexus while increasing transparency, communication and trust among key actors. We do so by proposing the operationalization of an interdisciplinary approach of analysis applying the novel methodology developed in Howarth and Monasterolo (2016). Through a bottom-up, participative approach, we present results of five themed workshops organized in the UK (focusing on: shocks and hazards, infrastructure, local economy, governance and governments, finance and insurance) featuring 78 stakeholders from academia, government and industry. We present participant's perceptions of opportunities that can emerge from climate and weather shocks across the energy-food-water nexus. We explore opportunities offered by the development and deployment of a transdisciplinary approach of analysis within the nexus boundaries and we analyse their implications. Our analysis contributes to the current debate on how to shape global and local responses to climate change by reflecting on lessons learnt and best practice from cross-stakeholder and cross-sectorial engagement. In so doing, it helps inform a new generation of complex systems models to analyse climate change impact on the food-water-energy Nexus.

Opening the Black Box: Using a Hydrological Model to Link Stakeholder Engagement with Groundwater Management

Stakeholder participation is a foundation of good water governance. Good groundwater governance typically involves the co-production of knowledge about the groundwater system. Models provide a vehicle for producing this knowledge, as well as a boundary object around which scientists and stakeholders can convene the co-production process. Through co-production, stakeholders and scientific experts can engage in exchanges that create system knowledge not otherwise achievable. The process involves one-way transfer of information, active two-way conversations, and integration of multiple kinds of knowledge into shared understanding. In the Upper Santa Cruz River basin in Arizona, USA, the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) convened a project aimed at providing scientific underpinnings for groundwater planning and management. This project, entitled Groundwater, Climate, and Stakeholder Engagement, serves as a case study employing the first two stages of knowledge co-production using a hydrological model. Through an iterative process that included two-way communication, stakeholders provided critical input to hydrologic modeling analyses. Acting as a bridging organization, the WRRC facilitated a co-production process, involving location-specific and transferability workshops, which resulted in new knowledge and capacity for applying the model to novel problems.

REMEMBRANCE IN THE CITIZEN HUMANITIES : Co-producing memories and historical knowledge

This dissertation explores the relationship between remembrance and citizen humanities. Combining the study of three qualitative empirical sources (an explorative comparison of five citizen humanities projects, an autonetnography conducted in one of the projects and the observation and analysis of the interaction of the online community in said project) the epistemic culture in citizen humanities and how remembrance is enacted in this context are addressed. The findings indicate that the participatory epistemic culture inherent to the citizen humanities allows a limited number of participants to transcend the roles that are assigned as mere data collectors, pursuing their own independent research projects. In this context, remembrance takes place in two levels, first by creating cultural mnemonic manifestations in the form of searchable metadata, transcribed data, digitized objects, images and rerecorded stories and second, by the act of creating knowledge and sharing it with the community. Finally, it is suggested that in the context of the citizen humanities, the traditional dichotomy of history vs. memory is challenged by the figure of the citizen historian, as this subject creates historical knowledge but also enacts mnemonic practices exemplified by the creation of cultural mnemonic manifestations and by recalling, recognizing, and localizing memories, both their own and from others.
