Factors that influence Winnipeg employers to participate in post-secondary co-operative education programs in technical communication

Campbell, Alexa 18 August 2006 (has links)
Co-op programs bridge the gap between the academic and work worlds and provide students with practical experience in their chosen fields while they earn money between academic school terms. The Technical Communication Diploma program at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, has incorporated a co-operative education term. Instructors at the College charged with placing co-op students each year are challenged in finding such placements, and they receive little guidance from research. In this study, I interviewed 21 employers in Winnipeg who hired co-op students from the Technical Communication Diploma program at Red River College from 2003–2005, to determine their perspectives on participation in co-op programs. Important factors influencing Winnipeg employers were the productivity of students and their specialized skill sets. The major deterrent to re-hiring students was lack of funding. A Model of Employers’ Motivation to Participate in Co-op Programs is proposed. / October 2006

The Operation of Cooperative Education for Homeschooled Children: The Quality Homeschool Cooperative as a Case Study

Muldowney, Hanna Maria 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Homeschooling is a growing trend in America. Studies on homeschooling in the past three decades have focused on the reasons why parents choose to homeschool, the academic and social quality of homeschooling, and the perceptions of public and private school officials towards homeschooling, as well as homeschooling parents' perceptions of public and private schools. The literature on homeschool cooperatives is scarce. A homeschool cooperative (co-op) is a group of homeschooling parents who have gathered to collectively teach their children. Co-ops might teach core subjects, electives, athletics, or just serve as an opportunity for homeschooling families to gather for fellowship and social time. This dissertation is a study of a homeschool co-op in San Antonio, Texas. The researcher for this study attempted to answer two questions: 1) What is a history of the co-op, and 2) What are the daily operations of the co-op? This researcher observed the selected co-op in action, reviewed documents supplied by co-op members, and interviewed four members of the co-op who have varying degrees of participation in the co-op. Through triangulation of interviews, observations, and documents, this researcher has described a history of the selected co-op, including its founding and daily operations. The co-op, formed in 2005, is a large, Catholic-affiliated co-op that meets weekly for twelve weeks each semester. The teachers, all paid, are either parents of co-op students or individuals hired from outside the co-op. Students in the co-op have twenty to twenty-five courses from which to choose each semester. The participants in the study are satisfied with their experiences in the Quality Homeschool Co-op. The participants state that the co-op is providing quality academic classes that supplement the curricula used at home. The participants are also pleased with the positive socialization that their children receive while attending the co-op. This study adds to the literature on homeschooling cooperatives. Although further research on this study is possible based on different research questions, this researcher has presented a history of Quality Homeschool Co-op and has documented the co-op's daily operations.

Richthoff, Andreas January 2011 (has links)
Syfte: 1.

Learning from Learn to Camp: Investigating immigrant integration in Canadian parks

Sullivan, Megan 30 April 2015 (has links)
While Canada has, in recent years, experienced a significant increase in global immigration in tandem with rising migration to urban centers, visitorship to Canadian parks has been declining. It is thought that this is, in part, due to shifting cultural demographics. In 2011, as part of a larger measured response to these changes, Parks Canada in partnership with the Mountain Equipment Co-op, launched ‘Learn to Camp’. The Learn to Camp program provides participants the opportunity to learn how to plan and enjoy safe and successful camping trips. The program is facilitated through one to two day events, and includes a repository of information online and a mobile app. Participants, primarily new and urban Canadians, are groomed to become independent campers: learning where to camp, what to bring, what to cook, and how to stay safe. This thesis seeks to understand the Learn to Camp program – how it is performed, how it is received, and what, if any, are its impacts on participants, parks, and other stakeholders? In this project, I draw on primary research and literatures from cultural studies of nature to examine Learn to Camp under two frames, highlighting both immediate and long-term program implications. The literatures provided by critical studies of nature demonstrate how Canadian parks carry a limiting nationalist identity embedded within a history of colonial erasures. In my analysis, Learn to Camp appears to reinforce this historical narrative as it prescribes specific ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘being’ in park spaces. Concurrently, interview and questionnaire data indicate that new Canadians have an overwhelmingly positive experience with Learn to Camp. Participants are provided the skills, knowledge, and confidence necessary to become independent campers. Furthermore, participants leave Learn to Camp with a renewed sense of belonging to the Canadian landscape and to Canadian culture. In this project, I am interested in accounting for both the problematic underpinnings and the enjoyment that can be found in acculturating practices, such as Learn to Camp. / Graduate

Design for Manufacturing : för produktionsanpassad konstruktion på Volvo Aero

Kämpe, Malin, Albertson, Peter January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of the Bachelor’s Thesis was to create a tool for the gathering of experience data for the product development process. It should contribute to a systematic operation approach at Volvo Aero Corporation. It should also contribute to improve productivity and producibility on future concepts. The problem described in the Bachelor’s Thesis is based on a pre-study performed at the company during the autumn 2010. The general task was defined as develop a structure for re-use of manufacturing experience and to create a test version of the tool for evaluation. After consultation with the selected Business Development-group from department 9931 Project-, Concept- and Manufacturing-leaders, the task was limited to gathering information of diameter dimensions from the Diffuser Case component at Volvo Aero. The creation of the tool had its starting-point in current production and the information available there. The Design for Manufacturing-tool has been created in Microsoft Excel and it’s developed in a way making it possible to gather and present information from different systems and sources. The tool presents the information in a pedagogical way that makes it user-friendly. The structure of the tool has been developed in consultation with the Business Development-group and the 35 columns of information is classified in three different groups: basic facts, capability and cost, operation time. By this classification the information level of detail increases from left to right which enables a more structured and systematic way of working. The knowledge, experience and data gathered represent information about the requirements the company currently produces. Over time, the Design for Manufacturing-tool is to be filled with more information from strategically chosen components which coincide with the direction the company has chosen for the development of new components.

Lindberg, Rasmus January 2022 (has links)
Tiedot kerättiin noin kaksi tuntia kestävän videotallenteen kautta, jossa osallistujat pelasivat yhteistyöhön perustuvaa ja vaativaa videopeliä It Takes Two. / This study is based on the perspective that each student attending the Swedish upper-secondary education is bilingual. This bilingualism stems from the fact that young in the digitalized world of the 2020s spend more time in social activities, such as videogames, or other forms of media with English as the primary language. Based on the theoretical framework of sociolinguistic superdiversity which is an evolution of the theory first introduced by Vertovec in 2007. Data was collected through a two-hour-long video recording when the participants played the video game It Takes Two, a co-op game that requires cooperation and teamwork to progress. The data were analyzed through theory-driven content analysis which focused on identifying and analyzing the function of English in communication between two Swedish-speaking students. The results suggest that the use of English constitutes a large part of the communication, this takes its form through translanguaging as the participants used all of their available linguistic resources to create meaning. The result of this study challenges the view that language education should always be conducted in the target language. In the digitalized and globalized society of the 21st century, the use of English is becoming more widespread and is already an integral part of most students’ everyday vocabulary. Therefore, it is important to question the current, mostly negative, views on translanguaging in first language education (L1 education).
