Free and enslaved African communities in buff Bay, Jamaica : daily life, resistance, and kinship, 1750-1834

Africans forcibly brought to the Americas during slavery came from very diverse cultural groups, languages, and geographical regions. African-derived creole cultures that were subsequently created in the Americas resulted from the interaction of various traditional African forms of knowledge and ideology, combined with elements from various Indigenous and European cultural groups and materials. Creating within the context of slavery, these complex set of experiences and choices made by Africans in the Americas resulted in an equally diverse range of fluid and complex relationships between various African-descended groups. In a similar vein, Africans in Jamaica developed and exhibited a multiplicity of cultural identities and a complex set of relationships amongst themselves, reflective of their varied cultural, political, social, and physical origins (Brathwaite 1971; Joyner 1984). In the context of late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century Buff Bay, Jamaica, most Africans were enslaved by whites to serve as laborers on plantations. However, a smaller group of Africans emerged from enslavement on plantations to form their own autonomous Maroon communities, alongside the plantation context and within the system of slavery. These two groups, enslaved Africans and Maroons, had a very complex set of relationship and identities that were fluid and constantly negotiated within the Jamaican slave society that was in turn hostile to both groups. Using historical (archival), oral, and archaeological sources of data, this dissertation attempts to do two things: first, it examines the daily life conditions of enslaved Africans at a Jamaican coffee plantation, Orange Vale, in order to understand settlement patterns, house structures, access to goods, informal trade networks, and material culture in their village. With constraints on their freedom and general confinement to the plantation, how did enslavement affect the material world of the enslaved Africans at Orange Vale? What materials did they have access to, and how did they use them? Second, I examine their cultural, social, and political identities alongside their autonomously freed Maroon “kin,” the neighboring Charles Town Maroon community. Using a popular origin myth, I attempt to show how descendents of both groups explain the origin of their relationship, as well as use the myth to simultaneously create political bonds based on their blackness and differentiate themselves. I also examine how their various origin, experiences, and worldview were manifested late-eighteenth and early nineteenth century Buff Bay and its place in the revolutionary Atlantic world, on the eve of emancipation. / text

A imigração italiana para Santo Amaro, município independente de São Paulo de 1832 até 1935, apresentou alguns aspectos deveras diferentes do ocorrido no interior do Estado. Para lá acorreram imigrantes que não eram agricultores de ofício que estabeleceram unidades de negócios aproveitando a dinâmica econômica da região e introduziram outras atividades trazidas da Itália. Sua presença, apesar de pequena numericamente, conseguiu estabelecer importantes relações no município. Como imigrantes instalados em um meio urbano, porém dependente de um grande centro, eles se fixaram e rapidamente conseguiram conquistar seu espaço na sociedade santamarense amalgamando-se à população nativa logo na primeira geração. / Italian immigration to Santo Amaro, a small city near São Paulo, was in many aspects different of their peers who were located in rural areas of the coffee farms. A small part of them was farmers and many reached out the cities to get better means of survival and, most of all, reach the opportunity to make America. Some of them was successful and could make small fortunes but most did not achieve the same success. As immigrants in an urban area, they could establish their own business unities or work as professionals they were in Italy. It was not difficult to them to blend with the native population and get important relations in Santo Amaros society even though in their first generation.

A presente investigação tem por objetivo central compreender as causas da formação da lavoura cafeeira nos engenhos do Oeste Paulista. Optou-se por concentrar os esforços analíticos na região de Campinas, que se considera ter sido a porta de entrada para o restante do interior paulista, em que a nova cultura pôde estabelecer-se, ainda que de maneira incipiente, a partir já da segunda metade da década de 1820. Especificamente, adotou-se como unidade de observação o produtor pertencente às famílias mais distintas da região, sobretudo que em algum momento de sua trajetória produtiva tenha sido possuidor de ao menos 50 escravos. / The present investigation aims to comprehend the causes for the making of coffee plantations in the West Paulista. It has been decided to concentrate the analytical efforts in the region of Campinas, considered to be the gateway for the rest of the interior of São Paulo, where the new culture could establish, even if incipiently, since the second half of the 1820s. Specifically, it was adopted as a unit of observation the producer belonging to the wealthiest families of the region, especially the one that at some point in his trajectory owned at least 50 slaves.

Starting from the photographs collection produced by the agricultural expert Armínio Kaiser between 1957 and 1970 at the north area of Paraná State coffee plantations, and from this collection (re)emergence context in the social circuit, because of the cultural projects called Revelações da História (History Revelations) and Grãos de ouro em sais de prata (Golden granes on silver salts), which have been developed in Londrina-PR between 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, respectively. While the first one developed recovery, preservation actions over the material of 1291 photographic negatives, and diffused it across several ways, the second one searched through Londrina rural districts registering on vídeo the testimonies from coffee growers around 139 Arminio Kaiser s photographs. The photographer Armínio Kaiser (the operator, on Roland Bathes conception) relations with the photographs were thought not only about the production moment, as well as the moment of its heritage turn , after decades. At the same time, the narratives produced by the coffee growers were presented and analyzed when they make contact with the Kaiser s photographic registers (these are the spectator narratives). Finally, searching to build an historical narrative which includes multiple image appropriations since the photographer until the observer contemplations the present work prints the necessary thought about the photographic and spoken discourses themselves on the historical text, as the ways to operate on stands and language translations observing a point of view from the Present Times History / A presente dissertação discute a fotografia como vetor de narrativas. Parte-se de um conjunto de fotografias produzidas pelo agrônomo Armínio Kaiser entre 1957 e 1970 nas lavouras de café do norte do Paraná, e do contexto de (re)emergência deste acervo no circuito social, a partir dos projetos culturais Revelações da História e Grãos de ouro em sais de prata , realizados na cidade de Londrina-PR entre 2007-2008 e 2008-2009, respectivamente. Enquanto o primeiro projeto desenvolveu ações de recuperação, preservação e difusão do bem material (1291 negativos) através de diferentes meios, o segundo percorreu distritos da zona rural de Londrina, a registrar em vídeo depoimentos de trabalhadores e ex-trabalhadores do café em torno de 139 fotografias de Armínio Kaiser. São problematizadas as relações do produtor das fotografias (Armínio Kaiser, o operator, na conceituação de Roland Barthes) com o material produzido, não só no momento da produção como, décadas depois, no da sua patrimonialização . Ao mesmo tempo, são apresentadas e analisadas as narrativas geradas por trabalhadores e ex-trabalhadores do café no contato com registros fotográficos de Kaiser (as narrativas do spectator). Finalmente, a busca pela construção de uma narrativa histórica que contemple as múltiplas apropriações da imagem operadas desde o fotógrafo até sua contemplação por um observador - imprime a necessidade de se pensar a própria presença da fotografia e da oralidade no texto histórico, bem como o modo de se operar as traduções de suporte e linguagem numa perspectiva da História do Tempo Presente
