Evaluation of Membrane Filtration and UV Irradiation for the Control of Flavobacterium psychrophilum in Recirculation Aquaculture SystemsHuyben, David C. 07 January 2013 (has links)
Flavobacterium psychrophilum, the causative agent of bacterial cold water disease (BCWD), is tolerant of recommended ultraviolet (UV) doses used in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS). Membrane filtration (MF) is used to remove pathogens from wastewater in many industries, but has not been thoroughly tested in RAS. In this study, bacterial removal efficiencies were assessed between MF and UV treatments over 30 days in an RAS. Bacterial removal efficiencies were not significantly different (p > 0.05) between MF and UV treatments, which removed 98.5 ± 0.4 % and 99.6 ± 0.1 % of total bacteria and 93.2 ± 5.2 % and 92.5 ± 4.1 % of heterotrophic bacteria, respectively. Under laboratory conditions, a MF system was challenged with concentrated doses of F. psychrophilum and achieved 5.8 ± 0.2 log reductions of the pathogen. Therefore, MF represents a potential alternative to UV irradiation and could be used to reduce the prevalence of F. psychrophilum in RAS, potentially reducing the incidence of BCWD and its impact on the aquaculture industry. / Environment Canada and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Methods: Fourteen athletes in an average age of 26,6±4,4 years performed, in a random cross-over design, 2 sessions with 5 repeated short-term isokinetic tests and 3 sessions with 3 repeated medium-term isokinetic tests. The effect of ice packs and passive rest and the effect of active recovery, passive rest and cold water immersion were assessed by the 5x2 (time x recovery) and 3x3 (time x recovery) repeated-measure ANOVA, respectively. Results: The ice packs did not have any effect on peak torque, total work and average power during short-term performances. The average heart rate was significantly lower during measurements with the ice packs than during the passive recovery (125±15 vs. 135±20 tepů. min-1 ). L’acidification des océans provoquée par l’absorption du CO2 atmosphérique par l’eau de merest devenue une préoccupation écologique majeure et menace déjà les organismes calcifiants. Suiteà la révolution industrielle, le pH de l’océan de surface a diminué de 0,1 unité-pH. En revanche, celuides eaux profondes reste peu documenté. Les isotopes du bore (11B) dans les carbonatesbiogéniques se sont révélés être un puissant outil géochimique pour la reconstitution du pH, mais n’apas encore été appliqué aux coraux profonds. Un travail analytique sur MC-ICPMS Neptune et uneanalyse géochimique de ces coraux ont été effectués afin de reconstituer et quantifier l’acidificationdes océans. De même, la valeur 11B de l’eau de mer utilisée pour calculer les paléo-pH a étérevisitée et l’homogénéité des océans vérifiée.L’analyse de deux colonies modernes de Lophelia pertusa et Madrepora oculata a permis dequantifier un taux d’acidification pendant la fin du XXème siècle pour les eaux de sub-surface en mer deNorvège et cela après établissement d’une calibration expérimentale à partir de coraux de culture.L’analyse géochimique des coraux profonds a mis en évidence un effet vital lié à la physiologie quidoit être considéré pour quantifier avec précision la variabilité du pH. Celui-ci peut être en partiecorrigé par une analyse statistique des isotopes stables B, C et O. Cette étude a aussi révélél’influence de l’hydrodynamique régionale. Enfin les variations naturelles du pH pendant l’Holocène etle Dernier Maximum Glaciaire sur des coraux profonds fossiles méditerranéens ont été établies etcelles pendant l’aube de l’explosion de la diversité biologique. / Ocean acidification is caused by the absorption of rising atmospheric CO2 by seawater andrepresents a major environmental issue. Since the beginning of the industrial era, seawater pH hasdecreased by 0.1 pH units and is already threatening calcifying organisms. Boron isotopes (11B) haveproved to be a powerful geochemical tool for the reconstruction of pH variations, but has not yet beenapplied to deep-sea corals (DSC). Accurate and precise measurements of boron isotopes in coralsand seawaters were performed in order to measure small pH variations.The technique of pH reconstruction based on boron isotopes (pH-11B) was used on two specimens of the DSC Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa collected alive in the Norwegian Sea and spanning an age of 40 (3) and 67 (3) years, respectively. Acidification rates were calculated by applying a new pH-11B calibration obtained from the geochemical analysis M. oculata and L. pertusa samples cultured under different pCO2 conditions. The contribution of a biological-related vital effect on d11B was observed at macrometer scale, and a correction was finally suggested based on oxygen and carbon isotopes. Overall, the coral δ 11B-based reconstructions show a pH decrease in the Norwegian Sea since the 1940s, which seems to be related to the local hydrodynamics. The pH-11B technique was also applied to fossil DSC fragments from two “on-mound sediment cores” retrieved in the Siculo-Tunisian Strait with the aim to reconstruct the pH during the Last Glacial Maximum and the Holocene periods. Finally, well-preserved limestone samples from the stratigraphic sequence Nama (551-543 Ma) in Namibia were investigated for 11B to study the pH variations at the beginning of the Cambrian evolutive radiation.

Structure-forming benthic invertebrates : habitat distributions on the continental margin of Oregon and WashingtonStrom, Natalie A. 18 April 2006 (has links)
Graduation date: 2006 / Structure-forming invertebrates belong to a polyphyletic group of primarily sessile and sedentary megafauna that can significantly enhance the complexity of physical habitats. A number of these organisms, including cold-water corals and sponges, are known to be slow growing and vulnerable to physical disturbance. In addition, as filter feeders, these invertebrates can indicate areas of consistently favorable conditions for feeding and growth. This study provides the first quantitative analysis of structure-forming invertebrate communities in many areas along the continental margin of Oregon and Washington. Geological surveys during 1992-95, using the occupied submersible, Delta, sampled an extensive area in this region, primarily on and around rock outcrops. The videos from these surveys were analyzed to inventory and catalog sessile structure-forming invertebrates and to document their associations with geological habitat types. Detailed data on geological substrate, invertebrate diversity, abundance, and density were compiled and analyzed. It was found that geological substrate and depth were reliable indicators of suitable habitat for most species included in the study. Gorgonian corals tended to concentrate in high densities in depths between 200-250m, at the southern edges of submerged rocky banks, and where hard rocky substrate was covered with a thick layer of sediment. Because of recent fishery regulation changes, this information can be used as baseline data for future studies on the effectiveness of closed areas on the recovery of structure-forming invertebrates from disturbance, particularly bottom trawling.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-08 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / Neste trabalho são estudados dois processos que utilizam biogás para obtenção do biohidrogênio. Inicialmente é analisado o processo de eletrólise da água, com o uso de energia elétrica gerada em conjunto motor de combustão interna/gerador (MCI) operando com biogás de aterro sanitário. Visando aproveitamento de calor dos gases de escape do MCI estuda-se o potencial de geração de energia térmica útil pela aplicação da técnica de cogeração. Considera-se dois casos: o primeiro para a produção de água quente em um trocador de calor, e o segundo, para a produção de água gelada em um sistema de refrigeração por absorção. Posteriormente é estudada a reforma a vapor de biogás para a produção de biohidrogênio, que utiliza também esse biocombustível para a geração de vapor superaquecido necessário ao processo de reforma. O objetivo é efetuar a análise energética de modo a determinar as eficiências dos processos, o potencial de produção de biohidrogênio, água quente ou água gelada, nos aterros sanitários da cidade de São Paulo. Também é efetuada análise de engenharia econômica para a determinação do custos da produção de biohidrogênio, água quente e água gelada, em US$/kWh. Esse estudo baseia-se em parâmetros tais como, investimento capital, custos de manutenção e operação dos equipamentos, período equivalente de utilização e período de amortização de capital. Em fase final, foram realizados estudos de impactos ambientais para a determinação das eficiências ecológicas dos processos de produção de biohidrogênio (reforma a vapor e eletrólise), considerando as emissões de poluentes, o dióxido de carbono equivalente e os indicadores de poluição. Como conclusões, tem-se que considerando a disponibilidade de biogás da cidade de São Paulo, existe potencial para a produção de biohidrogênio, e que o processo de reforma a vapor do biogás apresenta maior nível de eficiência sob o ponto de vista termodinâmico. Quando se considera a eletrólise incorporando a técnica da cogeração com a produção simultânea de eletricidade e água quente ou água gelada, observa-se aumento da eficiência energética do processo. A reforma a vapor do biogás, também se mostra mais atrativa economicamente de acordo com os parâmetros considerados. Sobre o ponto de vista ambiental, o processo de eletrólise com produção de água gelada apresenta maior eficiência ecológica, seguidos do processo de produção de água quente, reforma a vapor e somente eletrólise. / In this work is studied two processes to obtain hydrogen using biogas. Initially is analyzed the process of electrolysis of water, with the use of electricity generated in conjunction with an internal combustion engine / generator (ICE) operating with landfill biogas. generated by an internal combustion engine/generator operating with landfill biogas, is analyzed. In order to take advantage of the exhaust gases from the combustion of biogas, the potential of cogeneration is studied, another two cases are considered. The first one studies the production of hot water in the heat exchanger and the second analyzes the use of absorption refrigeration system to produce cold water. Subsequently it is studied the steam reform of biogas for the production of hydrogen, which is constituted of biogas burning for the generation of superheated steam used in the conversion of the fuel input. The objective is to make the energy analysis in order to determine the efficiency of the processes and the potential of producing hydrogen, hot water or ice water in the landfills of the city of São Paulo using the biogas generated. An economic engineering analysis to determine the production hydrogen cost, hot water and ice water, in US$/kWh, based on capital investment, maintenance and operation costs, equivalent period of use and payback. In the final phase, environmental study method is applied to determine the ecological efficiencies of the hydrogen production processes using biogas, considering the emissions of pollutants, carbon dioxide equivalent and pollution indicator. As a conclusion, considering the hydrogen production capacity and the biogas availability of the city of São Paulo, the process of steam reforming of the biogas is more thermodynamically efficient. When considering the electrolysis incorporating the cogeneration technique with the simultaneous production of electricity and hot water or cold water, it is observed an increase in the energy efficiency of the process. The steam reform of the biogas is more attractive economically according to the considered parameters. From the environmental point of view, the process of electrolysis with the production of cold water presents greater ecological efficiency, followed by the process of hot water production, steam reforming and only electrolysis.

Analytical and Numerical Modeling for Heat Transport in a Geothermal Reservoir due to Cold Water InjectionGanguly, Sayantan January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Geothermal energy is the energy naturally present inside the earth crust. When a large
volume of hot water and steam is trapped in subsurface porous and permeable rock
structure and a convective circulating current is set up, it forms a geothermal reservoir. A geothermal system can be defined as - convective water in the upper crust of earth, which
transfers heat from a heat source (in the reservoir) to a heat sink, usually the free surface. A geothermal system is made up of three main elements: a heat source, a reservoir and a fluid, which is the carrier that transfers the heat.
As an alternative source of energy geothermal energy has been under attention of the researchers for quite some time. The reason behind this is the existence of several benefits like clean and renewable source of energy which has considerable environmental advantage, with no chemical pollutants or wastes are generated due to geothermal emissions, and the reliability of the power resource. Hence research has been directed in several directions like exploration of geothermal resources, modeling the characteristics of different types of geothermal reservoirs and technologies to extract energy from them. The target of these models has been the prediction of the production of the hot water and steam and thus the estimation of the electricity generating potential of a geothermal reservoir in future years.
In a geothermal power plant reinjection of the heat depleted water extracted from the
geothermal reservoir has been a common practice for quite some time. This started for safe wastewater disposal and later on the technology was employed to obtain higher efficiency of heat and energy extraction. In most of the cases a very small fraction of the thermal energy present in the reservoir can be recovered without the reinjection of geothermal fluid. Also maintaining the reservoir pressure is essential which gradually reduces due to continuous extraction of reservoir fluid without reinjection, especially for reservoirs with
low permeabilities. Although reinjection of cold-water has several benefits, the possibility of premature breakthrough of the cold-water front, from injection well zone to production well zone, reduces the efficiency of the reservoir operation drastically. Hence for maintaining the reservoir efficiency and longer life of the reservoir, the injectionproduction well scheme is to be properly designed and injection and extraction rates are to
be properly fixed.
Modeling of flow and heat transport in a geothermal reservoir due to reinjection of coldwater has been attempted by several researchers analytically, numerically and
experimentally. The analytical models which exist in this field deal mostly with a single injection well model injecting cold-water into a confined homogeneous porous-fractured geothermal reservoir. Often the thermal conductivity is neglected in the analytical study considering it to be negligible which is not always so, as proved in this study. Moreover heterogeneity in the reservoir is also a major factor which has not been considered in any such analytical study. In the field of numerical modeling there also exists a need of a general coupled three-dimensional thermo-hydrogeological model including all the modes of heat transport (advection and conduction), the heat loss to the confining rocks, the regional groundwater flow and the geothermal gradient. No study existing so far reported such a numerical model including those mentioned above.
The present study is concerned about modeling the non-isothermal flow and heat transport in a geothermal reservoir due to reinjection of heat depleted water into a geothermal reservoir. Analytical and numerical models are developed here for the transient temperature distributions and advancement of the thermal front in a geothermal reservoir which is generated due to the cold-water injection. First homogeneous geothermal aquifers are considered and later heterogeneities of different kinds are brought into picture. Threedimensional numerical models are developed using a software code DuMux which solves flow and heat transport problems in porous media and can handle both single and
multiphase flows. The results derived by the numerical models have been validated using
the results from the analytical models derived in this study.
Chapter 1 of the thesis gives a brief introduction about different types of geothermal reservoirs, followed by discussion on the governing differential equations, the conceptual model of a geothermal reservoir system, the efficiency of geothermal reservoirs, the modeling and simulation concepts (models construction, boundary conditions, model calibration etc.). Some problems related with geothermal reservoirs and geothermal power is also discussed. The scenario of India in the context having a huge geothermal power
potential is described and different potential geothermal sites have been pointed out.
In Chapter 2, the concept of reinjection of the heat depleted (cold) water into the
geothermal reservoir is introduced. Starting with a brief history of the geothermal
reinjection, the chapter describes the purpose and the need of reinjection of geothermal fluid giving examples of different geothermal fields over the world where reinjection has been in practice and benefitted by that. The chapter further discusses on the problems and obstacles faced by the geothermal projects resulting from the geothermal reinjection, most
important of which is the thermal-breakthrough and cooling of production wells. Lastly the problem of this thesis is discussed which is to model the transient temperature distribution and the movement of the cold-water thermal front generated due to the reinjection. The need of this modeling is elaborated which represents the motivation of taking up the problem of the thesis.
Chapter 3 describes an analytical model developed for the transient temperature in a
porous geothermal reservoir due to injection of cold-water. The reservoir is composed of a confined aquifer, sandwiched between rocks of different thermo-geological properties. The heat transport processes considered are advection, longitudinal conduction in the
geothermal aquifer, and the conductive heat transfer to the underlying and overlying rocks of different geological properties. The one-dimensional heat transfer equation has been solved using the Laplace transform with the assumption of constant density and thermal properties of both rock and fluid. Two simple solutions are derived afterwards, first neglecting the longitudinal conductive heat transport and then heat transport to confining rocks. The analytical solutions represent the transient temperature distribution in the geothermal aquifer and the confining rocks and model the movement of the cold-water thermal front in them. The results show that the heat transport to the confining rocks plays an influential role in the transient heat transport here. The influence of some parameters, e.g. the volumetric injection rate, the longitudinal thermal conductivity and the porosity of
the porous media, on the transient heat transport phenomenon is judged by observing the variation of the transient temperature distribution with different values of the parameters.
The effects of injection rate and thermal conductivity have been found to be high on the results.
Chapter 4 represents another analytical model for transient temperature distribution in a heterogeneous geothermal reservoir underlain and overlain by impermeable rocks due to injection of cold-water. The heterogeneity of the porous medium is expressed by the spatial variation of the flow velocity and the longitudinal effective thermal conductivity of the medium. Simpler solutions are also derived afterwards first neglecting the longitudinal conduction, then the heat loss to the confining rocks depending on the situation where the
contribution of them to the transient heat transport phenomenon in the porous media is
negligible. Solution for a homogeneous aquifer with constant values of the rock and fluid parameters is also derived with an aim to compare the results with that of the
heterogeneous one. The effect of heat loss to the confining rocks in this case is also
determined and the influence of some of the parameters involved, on the transient heat
transport phenomenon is assessed by observing the variation of the results with different magnitudes of those parameters. Results show that the heterogeneity plays a major role in controlling the cold-water thermal front movement. The transient temperature distribution in the geothermal reservoir depends on the type of heterogeneity. The heat loss to the confining rocks of the geothermal aquifer also has influence on the heat transport
phenomenon.
In Chapter 5 another analytical model is derived for a heterogeneous reservoir where the heterogeneous geothermal aquifer considered is a confined aquifer consisted of homogeneous layers of finite length and overlain and underlain by impermeable rock
media. All the different layers in the aquifer and the overlying and underlying rocks are of different thermo-hydrogeological properties. Results show that the advancement of the cold-water thermal front is highly influenced by the layered heterogeneity of the aquifer.
As the cold-water thermal front encounters layers of different thermo-hydrogeological
properties the movement of it changes accordingly. The analytical solution derived here has been compared with a numerical model developed by the multiphysics software code COMSOL which shows excellent agreement with each other. Lastly it is shown that
approximation of the properties of a geothermal aquifer by taking mean of the properties of all the layers present will lead to erroneous estimation of the temperature distribution.
Chapter 6 represents a coupled three-dimensional thermo-hydrogeological numerical
model for transient temperature distribution in a confined porous geothermal aquifer due
to cold-water injection. This 3D numerical model is developed for solving more practical problems which eliminate the assumptions taken into account in analytical models. The numerical modeling is performed using a software code DuMux as mentioned before.
Besides modeling the three-dimensional transient temperature distribution in the model domain, the chapter investigates the regional groundwater flow has been found to be a very important parameter to consider. The movement of the thermal front accelerates or decelerates depending on the direction of the flow. Influence of a few parameters involved in the study on the transient heat transport phenomenon in the geothermal reservoir domain, namely the injection rate, the permeability of the confining rocks and the thermal conductivity of the geothermal aquifer is also evaluated in this chapter. The models have been validated using analytical solutions derived in this thesis. The results are in very good agreement with each other.
In Chapter 7 the main conclusions drawn from the study have been enlisted and the scope
of further research is also pointed out.

This master’s thesis deals with the overall sanitary and gas pipeline installation in a supermarket. The theoretical part deals with equipment and requirements for large kitchens with regard to the food preparation in this building. The computing and design part deals with the sewerage, water supply and gas distribution in the supermarket. The property counts over six thousand square meters and is partly two-storeyed. There are also several smaller sales units in addition to the sales areas, facility for staff and warehouses. The diploma thesis is based on current Czech and European regulations.
