Situated Commonism in the landscape of Umeå : Claiming and Sharing Places

Bäckström, Nina January 2015 (has links)
This is about acting from a situation, a place, its conditions and its actors. It is an attempt to understand the ongoing transformations of the city of Umeå, to grasp how it functions and gain the knowledge to be able to act within and suggest new possible futures. By looking at Umeå and the current situation with the parking lot as an index, a tool, a laboratory, and a possible new common, new ways of building the city while living within it will be suggested. The non place of the parking lot with its singular purpose is part of the mechanisms that makes our city, at the same time it is the effect of this city making and it is also a great place to start a change of such system. The 2.5x5 meters that makes a parking lot is small in comparison with the city, and even more so in comparison with the country or the world, but the size also makes it possible to grasp, touch and inhabit. The smallness makes it seem rather innocent and without much importance but the power lies within its multiplicity. A change within a parking lot might not be much, but the possibility of spreading throughout the city and the world makes the parking lot a very powerful place. Since humans can sometimes be creatures of habit, I believe that it is extremely important to keep on questioning the way we inhabit the world together. Widely spread and accepted habits can start acting like dysfunctional natural laws steering us in a direction we might not have chosen if alternatives were presented to us. By investigating and testing the possibilities of such a bland and unquestioned place as the parking lot, I am looking to find glimpses of alternative ways of making the world while living it.

Margens silenciadas : arte colaborativa e a busca por protagonismo

Graça, Luiza Abrantes da January 2016 (has links)
This master research discuss, through authors from the visual arts and other areas, such as sociology and anthropology, the interpersonal relationships in two collective and collaborative works, focusing in the roles that each one practice in the productions and questioning if their social and cultural peculiarities are present in these activities. Focusing in the collective groups Sopapo de Mulheres, from Porto Alegre, and Dulcinéia Catadora, from São Paulo, both formed by women, the present master thesis question how these two groups assemble to their agendas the particularities, becomings, of each person, and how these negotiations enable art works based in the collaboration and leading role of its members. Pursuing a dialogue with other studies about collaborative art made in Brazil, assumptions are raised about the progressive production of collaborative works in the country’s suburb zones, as well as the transformations that their origin and context place suffer after agency services modify ordinary distributions, rearranging roles and creating new audiences.

InterDraw - An Online, Interactive, Collaborative Art Program

Babic, Kristopher T 17 May 2000 (has links)
InterDraw is an art program that facilitates the artistic collaboration of multiple users. The goal of this collaboration is the creation of one unique computer image that represents a combination of the ideas and images provided by each of the users. InterDraw extends the already collaborative nature of the World Wide Web through the use of the Java programming language, which provides InterDraw with its cross-platform capabilities. Previously, collaborative art-like programs have been developed for specific operating systems or environments. This limitation prohibits any collaboration with users from other operating systems or environments. InterDraw breaks this limitation by using the power of Java to provide program access from any computer with an Internet connection and a Java enabled browser. The InterDraw clients collaborate by transforming objects drawn by a user into compressed binary strings that are then transported over the Internet to a server application. This server maintains a database of artist contributions and updates all other InterDraw clients collaborating on the same image. These binary strings provide a reliable transmission format that allows the drawn objects to be recreated by the InterDraw clients. Through user testing, InterDraw has been shown to provide an effective and entertaining forum for the creation of collaborative, dynamic images.

Quase imperceptível: arte participativa e ficção / Almost imperceptible: participatory art and fiction

Franciane Dama Junqueira 26 March 2015 (has links)
(BASBAUM 2013). / This dissertation raised a number of issues related to the reflection of my artistic process, taking as its starting point the poetic pictures of the house, sleeping, homelessness, invisibility and visibility that culminated in works about the homeless, accessibility and the use of the city. To analyze the participatory artistic experiences in urban context, a study of the production of artists like Flávio de Carvalho, Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica was presented, as well as the concepts of site specific and site oriented (KWON 1998). About the work involving relations and coexistence proposals, the book Estética Relacional (BOURRIAUD 2009) and the text Antagonismo e Estética Relacional was accessed (BISHOP 2004). The act of listening and the stories told during the participatory proposals approached the study of the idea of self-fiction (DOUBROVSKY 1977) and self-writing (FOULCAULT 2002). The relationship with the drawing was observed as production of meaning, as well was questioned the role of the artist from the observation of the mediators role, revealing other setting possibilities on the basis of participação total concept (OITICICA 1967), and artista-etc. (BASBAUM 2013).
