STRUCTURAL AND ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDIES OF THE LI-MN-NI-O AND LI-CO-MN-O PSEUDO-TERNARY SYSTEMS

McCalla, Eric 09 December 2013 (has links)
The improvement of volumetric energy density remains a key area of research to opti-mize Li-ion batteries for applications such as extending the range of electric vehicles. There is still improvement to be made in the energy density in the positive elec-trode materials. The current thesis deals with determining the phase diagrams of the Li-Mn-Ni-O and Li-Co-Mn-O systems in order to better understand the structures and the electrochemistry of these materials. The phase diagrams were made through careful analysis of hundreds of X-ray di raction patterns taken of milligram-scale combinatorial samples. A number of bulk samples were also investigated. The Li-Mn-Ni-O system is of particular interest as avoiding cobalt lowers the cost of the material. However, this system is very complex: there are two large solid-solution regions separated by three two-phase regions as well as two three-phase regions. Comparing quenched and slow cooled samples shows that the system trans-form dramatically when cooled at rates typically used to make commercial materials. The consequences of these results are that much of the system must be avoided in order to guarantee that the materials remain single phase during cooling. This work should therefore impact signi cantly researchers working on composite electrodes. Two new structures were found. The first was Li-Ni-Mn oxide rocksalt structures with vacancies and ordering of manganese which were previously mistakenly identi ed as LixNi2xO2. The other new structure was a layered oxide with metal site vacancies allowing manganese to order on two superlattices. The electrochemistry of both these materials is presented here. Finally, the region where layered-layered composites form during cooling has been determined. These materials were long looked for along the composition line from Li2MnO3 to LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 and the most significant consequence of the actual locations of the end-members is that one of the structures contains a high concentration of nickel on the lithium layer. Layered-layered nano-composites formed in this system are therefore not ideal positive electrode materials and it will be demonstrated that single-phase layered materials lead to better electrochemistry.

Enantiomer analysis using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Zu, Cheng-Li 05 May 2007 (has links)
The design, synthesis and evaluation of chiral selectors that allow the determination of enantiomeric composition using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry are detailed herein. The enantiomers of the chiral selector were mass labeled at a distant site from the chiral recognition sites of the molecules. The mass-labeled enantiomers were mixed in a one-to-one ratio to form a quasi-racemate. Chiral recognition can be observed by comparing relative abundances of the pseudo-diastereomeric selector-analyte complexes in the mass spectrum. The observed sense of chiral recognition with mass spectrometry was consistent with that observed chromatographically using a corresponding chiral stationary phase in every case. The complex intensity fraction (CIF, intensity of one selector-analyte complex divided by the sum of the intensities for both selector-analyte complexes) is linear with the enantiomeric composition. The slope of this line is an indication of the extent of the enantioselectivity: the larger the slope, the more significant the enantioselectivity. In addition, this line can be used as a calibration curve for the quantitative determination of enantiomeric composition of the same analyte with unkown enantiomeric composition. Amide derivatives of DNB-amino acids were first used as pseudo-enantiomeric chiral selectors in the presence of added lithium chloride. The enantioselectivity values were smaller than those observed on chiral HPLC using the corresponding chiral stationary phase. The use of deprotonated DNB-amino acids as chiral selectors provides higher enantioselectivities, but with low ion abundances. Tertiary amine appended analogues of the chiral stationary phase DNB-Leucine were prepared. The amine was appended to provide a site for ready ionization (through protonation). The performance of chiral selectors of this type was compared to the original chiral selectors that lack this functional group. Chiral recognition was also observed in a reciprocal sense using proline-derived pseudo-enantiomeric chiral selectors and analytes similar to DNB-amino acid esters or amides. Optimization of the electrospray ionization conditions provided similar enantioselectivities to those from chiral HPLC. Libraries of tertiary amine appended derivatives of DNB-dipeptides, which were prepared through combinatorial peptide synthesis, were screened using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The use of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry as a discovery tool for new chiral selectors is discussed.

Developing a Combinatorial Synthesis Database Tool

Quaglia Casal, Luciano January 2018 (has links)
Thin-film solar cell research is central to the electricity production of the near future. Photovoltaic technologies based on silicon have a significant portion of the global market and installed capacity. Thin-film solar cells are port of the emerging photovoltaic technologies that are challenging silicon for a part of the electricity production based on solar power. These thin-film technologies, such as copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe), are lower cost and require less energy to produce, but also require rare materials. An alternative to these technologies are thin-film solar cells based on more abundant materials. To develop these new materials at Uppsala University, combinatorial synthesis is used. This method produces a significant amount of data across different measurement methods. The data needs to be analysed and combined to gather information about the characteristics of the materials being developed. To facilitate the analysis and combination of data, a database tool was created in MATLAB. The result is a program that allows its User to combine energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy and Photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements done on solar cell absorber layers. Absorber layers are the section of solar cells where sun lighet is absorbed, and electron-hole pairs are created. The program provides multiple figures and graphs combining the different data collected, enabling the User to draw conclusions about the characteristics of the sample and its suitability as an absorber layer. The combinatorial synthesis database tool created could be user for combinatorial synthesis analysis of other material samples that are not necessarily absorber layers for thin-film solar cells. This report describes both the development of the tool and the code itself.

Structure-Based Design and Synthesis of Protease Inhibitors Using Cycloalkenes as Proline Bioisosteres and Combinatorial Syntheses of a Targeted Library

Thorstensson, Fredrik January 2005 (has links)
Structure-based drug design and combinatorial chemistry play important roles in the search for new drugs, and both these elements of medicinal chemistry were included in the present studies. This thesis outlines the synthesis of protease inhibitors against thrombin and the HCV NS3 protease, as well as the synthesis of a combinatorial library using solid phase chemistry. In the current work potent thrombin inhibitors were generated based on the D-Phe-Pro-Arg motif incorporating cyclopentene and cyclohexene scaffolds that were synthesized by ring-closing metathesis chemistry. A structure-activity relationship study was carried out using the crystallographic results for one of the inhibitors co-crystallized with thrombin. HCV NS3 protease inhibitors comprising the proline bioisostere 4-hydroxy-cyclopent-2-ene-1,2-dicarbboxylic acid were synthesized displaying low nanomolar activity. The stereochemistry and regiochemistry of the scaffolds were determined by NOESY and HMBC spectra, respectively. The final diastereomeric target compounds were isolated and annotated by applying TOCSY and ROESY NMR experiments. Furthermore, a 4-phenyl-2-carboxypiperazine targeted combinatorial chemistry library was synthesized to be used early in the lead discovery phase. This was done using a scaffold that was synthesized by palladiumcatalyzed aromatic amination chemistry and subsequently derivatized with eight electrophiles and ten nucleophiles.

Combinatorial Synthesis and High-Throughput Analysis of Halide Perovskite Materials for Thin-Film Optoelectronic Devices

Näsström, Hampus 30 September 2022 (has links)
To keep up with the increasing need for specialized materials, a parallelization of the materials discovery process is needed through combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput analysis. The acceleration of materials discovery is especially of interest in the area of optoelectronics where metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have proven to be an excellent material class and have achieved impressive performance in photovoltaic devices among other applications. However, the degradation of the frequently employed organic components contributes to limiting the long-term stability of MHP devices. In this work, accelerated materials discovery is addressed through the development, implementation, and validation of two complementary methods for combinatorial synthesis. Firstly, the solution-based method of combinatorial inkjet printing was further developed by providing and validating a new algorithm for improved ink mixing. Secondly, the vapor-based synthesis of double-gradient CsyPb1-y(BrxI1-x)2-y was achieved by co-evaporation. Combinatorial libraries created by both methods were used for the high-throughput investigation of the structural and optical properties of the inorganic CsyPb1-y(BrxI1-x)2-y MHPs. This enabled the fast construction of complete phase diagrams for thin-films of the CsPb(BrxI1-x)3 solid solution which show that the addition of Br stabilizes the semiconducting perovskite phase and allows for lower processing temperatures. Additionally, CsyPb1-y(BrxI1-x)2-y libraries were investigated by automized, contact-less, optical mapping measurements, enabling the rapid screening of over 3400 compositions. This enabled the assessment of the photovoltaic potential of CsyPb1-y(BrxI1-x)2-y over a very broad compositional range. The maximum efficiency potential was found for stoichiometric compositions, with excess of Pb or Cs causing increased losses by non-radiative recombination. These results provide vital knowledge for further development of inorganic MHP devices.
