Towards the intercultural communication of the Gospel: a response to change in the St Helenian culture

Appollis, Edward Adrian 30 November 2004 (has links)
St Helena Island in the South Atlantic Ocean has been changing for over a decade. The way the people on the Island respond to the change affects the way in which the Gospel is communicated, and this has missiological implications. This raises the question; what influence does change have on the way the Gospel is communicated? If people are resistant to social change, will they be open to change required by the Gospel? How will good intercultural skills help? To fully address the Island's response to change, one needs to look at the interplay of change, culture and communication. It also important to consider how these three elements can be monitored and managed by both the Saints and the clergy alike. This will become the basis for my proposal of focusing the intercultural communication of the Gospel on the ever-changing world of the youth. / Christian Spirit, Church History, Missiology / M.Th. No. of bitstreams: 1 Valdália Alves de Andrade.pdf: 6886195 bytes, checksum: 3ffd1fcdf9007db27f6ffcb327bd4290 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research looks for identify communicative practices of Lombard Capuchins friars from Imperatriz during prelacial time (1922 – 1979). Enhancing prelacies are specific territories administrated by a bishop, reaching different municipals still inaccessible to bishopric. With this temporal cut, we intend to understand how Italian missionaries articulate their communication in a way to spread Roman Catholicism in a city that the past is constantly investigated by researchers as a hostile location, placed on Maranhense southwest. This work adhere to systematized sources in documents and illustrated periodicals produced by the Order and obtained on the archives of Museu da Igreja do Carmo, in São Luís, capital of the state. Another methodological communicational support is oral sources that, narrating experiences related to the past of Imperatriz brings the dimensions of capuchins‟ traces on the city. The theoretical perspective establishes a dialogue between Jerusa Pires Ferreira and Paul Zumthor, putting together the theme memory on the communicational axis. At this same line, we extend the approach in a dialogue between Gourevitch and Halbwachs. On the side of these reflections, appears the archive as a collection of signs that preserves the past, by the conception of Fausto Colombo. Authors like João Fagundes Hauck, José Oscar Beozzo and Riolando Azzi are references to understand the history of Catholic Church in Brazil. The research remarks channels used by Capuchins for the pontifical clamors would be assimilated by the community studied here promoted intense movements made by the catholic institution in Imperatriz, reinforced, mainly, on sacraments practices on a panorama of doctrinaire reaffirmation created by Trento‟s Council. On the end, the research overarches the wish of renovation defined by Vatican‟s II Council that created historical conditions to implement a new way to pastoral acts on the Church of the city from experiences with the Communities Eclesia de Base / A pesquisa busca identificar as práticas comunicativas dos frades capuchinhos lombardos na cidade de Imperatriz durante o período prelazial (1922- 1979).

Rhetorical vision and the great commission

Anderson, Amber L. January 1998 (has links)
This study analyzed representative works of John Mott and Bill Bright using Ernest Bormann's method of fantasy theme analysis. The analysis confirmed that Mott and Bright, as leaders of two organizations that encourage college students to engage in evangelism, share an identical rhetorical vision. This vision can be labeled the Great Commission and is identical in thought and content to the words of Christ found in Matthew 28. The shared rhetorical vision encourages members of the rhetorical community to acknowledge the needs of the world and seek to meet those needs by sharing the gospel message of Christ. In addition to a shared rhetorical visions, the works considered in this study also share identical fantasy types: "Fetching Good Out of Evil," and the quest. The fantasy type of the quest has received little interest in other studies. This study suggests that the type might provide rhetorical critics with a useful form for future studies. Several fantasy themes also were found to exist within each artifact. The presence of shared fantasy types and the commonalties that exist between the fantasy themes verifies the presence of the shared rhetorical vision, the Great Commission. / Department of Speech Communication

Pacheco, Luis Carlos de Lima 25 October 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-06-01T18:12:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 pre-textuais.pdf: 220020 bytes, checksum: d159f893d4f3cd97ac54ebbb015b3a29 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-10-25 / This research aims at developing criteria for subsidies through video production for Religious Education, in the Brazilian schools. It arises from the fact that there is an unfilled gap in Religious Education regarding to audiovisual subsidies, concerning the content, to new Educational Policy implementation and its interreligiousety demands and respect to human dignity, as well as that they would attend, on terms of form, to nowadays electronic culture. This Paper therefore presents the Religious Education historiography, in Brazil, and draws up the Brazilian Religious Field, which from one provides a legal curricular stand-platform for Religious Education subsidies evaluation that ought to become an indispensable theme knowledge, as a cultural experience regarding to transcendence. Thereupon, we will deep the epistemological foundations in order to analyze the Religious Education audiovisual subsidies: Pierre Babin s media theory on Modulation and approaches concerning Transdisciplinary and Integral Knowledge (Barsarab Nicolescu and Ken Wilber). Then, based upon this historical and epistemological support, we fulfill criteriology text, departing from an exemplary audiovisual work, in the School Religious Education / Esta Pesquisa tem como objetivo desenvolver critérios para a elaboração de subsídios em vídeo para o Ensino Religioso nas escolas brasileiras.

The need for contextualization in inter-cultural communication of the Gospel

Mashoko, Fannuel 25 August 2009 (has links)
This dissertation explores the need for contextualization from a missiological perspective. It seeks to validate the needs for contextualization in the Epworth Community near Harare, Zimbabwe, where a number of cultures are represented. The subject of contextualisation is first explored in a general sense, i.e. relating to how it has been presented in key missiological publications and in different contexts, particularly in Africa and Zimbabwe. The dissertation explores the need for identification in intercultural communication, and also analyses the context of Epworth and the history of the Churches of Christ in Zimbabwe. A chapter on theological reflection surveys the issue of contextualisation in the Old and New Testaments. The study concludes with practical recommendations on how the issues raised in the study can be applied to a field wider than the Epworth Community. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. Towards contextualized Bible storying: cultural factors which influence impact in a Sindhi context

Naylor, Mark, 1959- 11 1900 (has links)
Chronological Bible storying generally assumes a universality of the story teller's theological perspective in selecting and shaping Bible stories interculturally. This paper argues against this approach and proposes a method of crafting contextualized Bible stories which resonate with the worldview of a receptor culture. The influence of the theological and cultural presuppositions of the story teller is reduced through the utilization of the receptor culture's worldview assumptions - those values and beliefs through which the impact of scripture is experienced. The empirical research consisted of observing the responses of Sindhi Muslim men to a reading of John 13:1-10 and then interviewing them to generate cultural expressions which revealed a relationship between their culture and the scripture passage. Analysis of the data disclosed themes which have scriptural referents and can be used as the basis for selecting and crafting Bible stories that resonate with worldview assumptions. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Die implikasies van Pierre Babin se boek The new era in religious communication vir 'n kontemporêre jeugbedieningsmodel

Roux, Anton 11 1900 (has links)
The ministering of the gospel to the youth within the Dutch Reformed Church finds itself in a rapid at present and is calling for rejuvenation and change. Underlying to this crisis, is the spirit of the times known as Post Modernism. The latter has a decisive influence on the way the youth of today hear and learn the gospel. It also has a conclusive impact on communicating religion. Pierre Babin argued in his book The New Era in Religious Communication five concepts which cast light on the new era which has arrived in the communication of religion. These address the crisis of the new era effectively. He emphasizes the following main concepts: • The shift from the Gutenberg era to the audiovisual era • The impact of the electronic era on faith • The way of beauty • The symbolic way • Stereo catechesis. The author is of the opinion that these concepts, as formulated by Babin, pave the way for an effective, contemporary model for ministering the gospel to the youth within the South African context. / Practical Theology / M.
