Communication of Values : A Qualitative Study at Stena Metall

Arvidsson, Sofia, Fransson, Lena, Lundgren, Carin January 2010 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate Stena Metall’s values and how they are communicated within the organization. Background: In the Fall of 2008, the world was shocked by the worst financial crisis in decades. The crisis had deep effects on the Swedish economy, and many companies suffered heavily. The recycling and environmental service company Stena Metall experienced their first negative result in 30 years, and 900 employees had to leave the company. An action program, including an altered culture was established with the purpose to adapt the operations to the new business environmental conditions. Values, which are a part of the organizational culture, were decided to be an important part of the change. To implement these in the entire organization a well-structured communication process is needed. Within these subjects; values and communication, a qualitative study at Stena Metall has been conducted. Method: To fulfill the purpose, a qualitative method has been used. Thirteen interviews were conducted to collect data from different levels of the organization. The interviews were designed differently based on the employee’s level of responsibility in the organization. The theoretical framework used when analyzing the empirical material includes earlier research in the areas of culture, with emphasis on values, and communication. Conclusion: Two set of values have been identified, core values and aspiration values. The findings indicate a gap in the communicational process at Stena Metall. Part of the new information communicated about Stena Metall´s values is lost on its way from the management to the lower levels in the organization. The perception of what the values mean, both core and aspiration values, differs depending on level in the organization.

A Literature study on Factors that enables Communication between R&D and Manufacturing

Madhusudan, Seegapalya Chikkagangaiah January 2008 (has links)
Communication, coordination and cooperation are critical for a successful organization. This master's thesis work presents a literature study of the factors that influence the interface between Research & development and manufacturing functions. Research & development and manufacturing functions rarely share information among each other and rarely combine their skills and knowledge to produce effective and efficient work within organization. This is due to lack of mutual understanding improper communication and coordination among members in the teams. In the late 1990's, competition, Information Technology proliferation, increasing customer demands for better products at shorter lead times emphasized increased need for effective product development. Each function has its specialization and is effective in their domain. Each department has roles and responsibilities to complete given tasks. But they neglect the organizational and management issues and lack the focus where they are a part of a bigger process (i.e. delivering value to customer and making the company successful at the end of the day). The main focus of the thesis is to give deeper knowledge on communication and coordination between Research and Development and manufacturing. This is achieved by review of the articles, analysis and finally synthesis of literature to develop constructs and analysis models. This will help to understand the factors and its interaction. The factors identified are individual responsibilities, artefacts and system or domain understanding, communication idea, control and role distribution, teams, accessibility and arena for personal meetings and finally overall leadership. Each factor has its own and unique contribution to success with in the organization. These factors are interrelated and dependent on one another. Artefacts understanding deals with some actions and steps has to be taken in order to executive the give tasks, individual role plays an important role in what sense he\she will contribute to the team as well as to the organization. Even active responsibilities must understand the system or domain and quickly adjust to the environment and get practice on it. Teams are essential tool in any organization, working together creates creative problem solving,  improves effective of communication, improves development skills and ability of an individual, mutual understanding and cooperation among group members all will constitute to the teams. Finally teams are the critical building blocks of an organization. The model developed needs further testing through empirical evidence to increase its validity.

The Role Of Design Brief In Urban Design Competitions

Kabal, Emre 01 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Design brief is the descriptive and connective medium of design competitions. The main aim (design problem) of the design competition is explained by means of design brief which is setting up all needs and requirements or design program (specification) which is explaining the requirement list. The definition of design problem should be formulated to make clear statements in order to avoid misapprehensions by forming creative environment to enable creation of new ideas. The communication processes are composed between the participants of the competition, which are the client, competitors, jury and the public, by means of the formulation of design problem by the design brief. This thesis aims to understand the role of design brief as different from design program (specification) in the process and result of the urban design competitions by studying the nature and effects of design brief as the main communication tool in the design and evaluation processes in design competitions. Three urban design competitions are chosen as the main study areas of the thesis because of their different processes and results.

The role of senior managers at the North-West University in internal communication and employee engagement / P.P. Mmope

Mmope, Phumzile Pheladi January 2010 (has links)
The rationale that effective internal communication plays a crucial role in aligning employees to organisational goals, and in so doing, inculcate employee engagement and help an organisation to succeed, is remodelling internal communication management within organisations. At the core of the preceding rationale lies the fundamental realisation and acknowledgement that effective internal communication is not the function of the communication department, but in effect a basic prerequisite that must be understood, embraced and practiced by all levels of management. Managers without effective internal communication and employee engagement cannot execute the responsibility of strategic alignment. The challenge is now to ensure that the internal communication process is approached as a properly structured and efficiently managed system, rather than a collection of fragmented messages that often cause confusion among employees and compel disengagement. This study explores to what extent the senior managers at the North-West University understand their fundamental role in facilitating effective internal communication and employee engagement. An extensive literature study revealed that there is a correlation between effective internal communication and understanding of organisational strategy and objectives among employees. In addition, a strong correlation between effective internal communication, employee engagement, employee performance and organisational profitability has been identified in literature. The empirical findings were obtained by means of a qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews with senior and middle managers. The semi-structured interviews explored and described how the managers perceive the nature of their role in facilitating and sustaining effective internal communication and employee engagement. In comparing the actual role of senior managers at the University in internal communication and employee engagement with the ideal state related to D'Aprix's (1996) manager's communication model, as well as the principles of a convergence model of communication, information richness of communication channels, a leadership communication framework and the impact of highest scoring manager activities and attributes, it was concluded that this communication role is still misunderstood by senior managers and not properly structured and executed. Consequently, internal communication is not adequately fulfilling its strategic potential as a means to establish positive relationships, diffuse information, motivate, and align employees' actions and behaviour to the set goals of the University. It is suggested that future studies measure and determine whether the engagement levels of employees at the North-West University have increased as a result of managers fulfilling their internal communication role effectively. Another study could also assess and measure the effectiveness of internal communication channels, with the view to develop an internal communication channel guide or toolkit for managers at the North-West University. The key drivers of employee engagement and related effect on the North-West University's performance could also be explored and measured in future research studies. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

Methodologically, the thesis consists of bibliographic research, seeking to support the areas of education and communication, as well as Educommunication; documentary research to contextualize the research locus and exploratory research from the application of an online questionnaire to 165 professors of UEMS, who answered it voluntarily. It was found that professors use ICTs in their daily personal activities and, to a lesser extent, in professional environments. The challenges are to better form those professors and to provide them with continuous training so that they can use the ICTs in classrooms more effectively. It is also noted that advances in technology and new communicational ecosystems built new and other realities, making learning a nonlinear factor, demanding revision in educational projects in higher education so that they enable purposeful dialogues between communication and education. The institutional infrastructure regarding the ICTs is another obstacle pointed out, both in the acquisition and in the maintenance of those technological devices made by the University. In the end, it is proposed to carry out studies and research to discuss changes in the faculty’s employment contract arrangements, since working with ICTs properly requires more time and teaching dedication.

Faktorer som påverkar ett virtuellt teams kommunikationsprocesser inom agila mjukvaruutevcklingsprojekt : En fallstudie av Altran / Factors that affect a virtual team's communication processes within agile software development projects : A case study of Altran

Johansson, Elin January 2018 (has links)

MEDIAÇÃO MULTIMIDIÁTICA DO CONHECIMENTO: UM REPENSAR DO PROCESSO COMUNICACIONAL DOCENTE NO ENSINO SUPERIOR

Hack, Josias Ricardo 08 December 2004 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-03T12:30:15Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Josias Ricardo Hack.pdf: 601518 bytes, checksum: d39627021f7d67d5a50fbda4654ffc83 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-12-08 / This dissertation examines the teaching communication process for the multimedia mediation of knowledge. The objective of this research is to point out that the qualification of teachers in Distance Education promotes the development of a new teaching attitude towards Higher Education and that it provides pportunities for reflection and improvement of communication practices through the use of ICT Information and Communication Technologies. In order to reach this objective several theories from the Communication and Education fields, connected to other areas of knowledge, were considered. The research method utilized was the Case Study on the qualification of teachers in Distance Education, proposed by UNOESC University of West Santa Catarina between 2002 and 2004. It is important to note that this study is not an isolated topic since it is embedded in the multimedia mediation of knowledge. The unique contribution of this work is based on the communicational process of the teachers who adopt Distance Education strategies in the Higher Education which was found to be different from that adopted in a face-to-face setting. During this study it was observed that it is necessary to prepare teachers so that they can change their communicational attitude towards Distance Education. In the last chapter of this dissertation a continuing qualification program for teachers through Distance Education is proposed. This program is based on the principles of criticism, creativity and contextualization keeping in mind that the teacher as a learner of multimedia mediation is the focus.
