Work experience of Metrorail train drivers : an Employee Assistance Programme study

Bokaba, Makhine Moshibudi Brigid 18 October 2005 (has links)
The research study investigates the trauma experienced by Metrorail train drivers. An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a worksite-based programme that assists in dealing with employee’s problems that impact on their job performance and overall production. Trauma awareness and management through therapy are necessary components and contribute to the effective operation of EAP. The study was conducted within the framework of a survey. Face-to-face scheduled interviews were designed and conducted on employees, i.e. Metrorail train drivers, after their respective supervisors had given permission. From the feedback on these interviews, it was apparent that train drivers need the help of EAP services, maybe through psychological counselling and motivation. Witnessing suicides by people on rail tracks apparently is a common occurrence to Metrorail train drivers. These accidents leave them emotionally scarred and haunted for almost their entire lives. EAP services will embrace other elements influencing the performance and occupational well-being of these train drivers. These elements include performance incentives, fringe benefits, security, and conducive train settings. / Dissertation (MSD (Employee Assistance Programme))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Social Work / unrestricted

The Effects of PECS Training on Symbolic Matching Skills in Learners with Autism

Cranmer, Elizabeth 05 1900 (has links)
This study evaluated whether picture exchange communication system (PECS) training would result in the development of conditional relations among corresponding pictures, objects (reinforcers) and spoken words used in PECS training with learners with developmental disabilities. Three participants with autism and mental retardation were trained to use PECS. Match-to-sample procedures were used to assess all possible conditional relations among stimuli before, during, and after PECS training. None of the three participants in this study acquired conditional discriminations involving the pictures, reinforcers, and spoken words used in their PECS training.

Effects of Picture Exchange Training on Communication Topographies

Haray, Aimee H. 05 1900 (has links)
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) has been used with children with autism and other developmental disabilities as an alternative to vocal communication. Some researchers have reported rapid acquisition of picture-exchange requesting as well as increased vocal speech and increased spontaneous social interactions following PECS training. Earlier research has found that although 3 children with autism learned to exchange pictures for preferred items during PECS training, requesting topographies did not change and vocal speech did not increase after PECS training. The present study evaluated the effects of PECS training on requesting topographies, especially vocal speech, with 3 participants with autism and mental retardation. Only one participant maintained picture-exchange requesting, and none of the participants showed an increase in vocal speech during probe sessions conducted after each PECS training phase.

The main aims of this work were building a link of free space optical communication (FSO) and the subsequent insertion of a Bessel (nondiffracting) beam in the link. After a brief review of the concepts about the operation and limitations of FSO systems, we build an optical link through a distance of 50 meters at a much reduced cost. Attempting to reduce the possible impact caused by the optical beam diffraction, and scattering we have proposed the use of nondiffracting beams to perform the link. In this way, after studying the basic characteristics of nondiffracting Bessel beams and their experimental generation, we implement their insertion in a short-distance optical link in order to demonstrate the real possibility of using these beams in free space optical communications / Mestrado / Telecomunicações e Telemática / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

Controle de admissão de chamadas fuzzy e controle de fluxo fuzzy com tráfegos multi-classes para redes 3G UMTS / Fuzzy call admission control and fuzzy flow control with multi-class traffic for 3G UMTS networks

Chipana, Ana Gloria Mamani 22 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Lee Luan Ling / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Elétrica e de Computação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-22T11:35:06Z (GMT). This dissertation proposes a fuzzy call admission control method (FCAC) and a fuzzy flow control method (FFC) for multi-class traffic. Two methods should be used on the air interface of 3G UMTS networks. The FCAC method accepts or rejects a new call evaluating the priority of the input traffic class and the total effective bandwidth available at the air interface. Due to inherited fuzzy characteristics the proposed FCAC-FFC can be considered as a soft-blocking approach. The calls with lowest priority are blocked first whenever the currently available bandwidth is not large enough. The FFC method can reduce the transmission rates of active users of lower priority if necessary and consequently increases the effective bandwidth available. Therefore, the more efficient use of system transmission resource can be achieved by increasing the average number of active users. The proposed method was implemented in MATLAB environment, and the fuzzy logic toolbox was used to design the fuzzy controllers. The simulation results show that the proposed call admission control method guarantees efficient use of the air interface resource and achieves lower call blocking probability than the CAC-FC and FCAC-FC methods / Mestrado / Telecomunicações e Telemática / Mestra em Engenharia Elétrica

CONSTRUCTING A DECENTRALIZED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM COMPLIANT WITH THE ISO 20022 FINANCIAL INDUSTRY MESSAGE SCHEME

Haataja, Emilio, Stackenäs, William January 2021 (has links)
Financial institutes need a secure and reliable infrastructure to make transactions with each other. In the current situation there are a few different solutions for this, like SWIFT and SEPA. These solutions have their own set of problems. SEPA only covers the eurozone and the rest of the European Union. SWIFT has been around since the 1970s and uses an old communication standard which is expensive to use. SWIFT’s standard is currently being replaced by the more modern ISO 20022 financial messaging standard. Due to this, there is a demand for a new digital communication system that is accessible, cheap, secure, and easy to use for financial institutions. This problem could be solved by the newer ISO 20022 standard and HTTPS. In this thesis, a proposal for a communication system that is compliant with these standards is constructed, keeping the integrity of the financial messages intact. The communication system’s source code is publicly available and documented, which keeps it accessible and makes it a simple ISO 20022 compatible communication system framework for financial institutions to integrate into their existing payment systems. The communication system solution is implemented in Java, which is a well-established programming language within the finance sector. The implementation is validated through integration tests for the test cases that have been identified for the constructed system. Furthermore, the implementation includes documentation with instructions for, for example, how the proposed communication system can be integrated in existing financial institution systems. The communication system supports basic functionality for sending and receiving messages, but support for multiple message types is not implemented. Furthermore, the communication system is dependent on an external system that receives and processes the messages after they have been validated by the communication system.

Extraction of semiconductor laser rate equation parameters for simulation of fiber-optical communication system purpose

Wen, Ye Feng 10 1900 (has links)
<p>This thesis presents the methods to extract modal parameters of semiconductor laser diodes based on a general zero-dimensional rate equation model. Three experiments, namely: the steady-state power versus injection current, small signal intensity modulation response and measurement of small signal response through dispersive optical fiber have been introduced, performed and analyzed under a sample space of 20 Multiple Quantum Well (MQW) Distributed feedback (DFB) laser of the same specification and from the same manufacturer. Testing software has been developed to perform the experiments , collect and analyze the data. The test results display an interesting Gaussian distributions that can be used to enhance further extraction process.</p> <p>An new method to extract the line-width enhancement factor has been purposed, which introduce a new way to extract rate equation parameters for laser lasing at the wave length for zero dispersion in optical fiber (1310nm). The new method circumvent the difficulty for measurement of small signal response through dispersive optical fiber method will not work due to the low fiber dispersion around this wavelength. This method has been validated and published at OSA conference.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)
