Critical Rhetoric and Collaboration: Missing Principle #9 and ProfsDoPop.com

Herbig, Art, Herrmann, Andrew F., Watson, Alix R., Tyma, Adam W., miller, joan 01 January 2020 (has links)
As part of this Special Section on critical rhetoric, this article examines the role of collaboration in the future of critical rhetoric. Building on McKerrow’s original eight principles of praxis, the authors advocate for a missing ninth principle that reflects the need for critical rhetoric to be a shared venture across both individual projects and larger discourses. As an example of this type of work, they provide ProfsDoPop.com, an academic, online blog designed to bring academic sensibilities and concepts to popular audiences through the critique of popular culture.

Implementation and Analysis of Wireless Local Area Networks for High-Mobility Telematics

Aziz, Farhan Muhammad 26 June 2003 (has links)
Wireless networks provide communications to fixed, portable and mobile users and offer substantial flexibility to both end-users and service providers. Current cellular/PCS networks do not offer cost effective high data rate services for applications, such as, telematics, traffic surveillance and rescue operations. This research studies the feasibility and behavior of outdoor implementation of low-cost wireless LANs used for high mobility telematics and traffic surveillance. A multi-hop experimental wireless data network is designed and tested for this purpose. Outdoor field measurements show the wireless coverage and throughput patterns for static and mobile users. The results suggest that multi-hop wireless LANs can be used for high mobility applications if some protocols are improved. / Master of Science

Bark Like a Dog!: Outrageous Ideas for Actors

Parker, Herb 01 January 2013 (has links)
This book, a short and easy read with common sense coaching and easy to follow exercises, takes beginning acting students through techniques and improvisations that will help them overcome perhaps their greatest fear: making “The Big Choice.” Using sound examples from classical as well as contemporary plays, Herb Parker makes it easier for the theatrical neophyte by making the case that a play is “about human beings caught in an outrageous situation, caused by love.” “Actor, director, teacher Herb Parker has given us a splendid new book about acting. He analyzes this ancient art in clear, precise, engaging prose while dispensing acute, methodical and perceptive advice. Brilliant actor that he is, Herb understands the craft, the exceptional director gently leads the actor toward a fully realized performance and the thoughtful, caring teacher explains it all to the reader (student). This is the book of acting you need and one you will cherish.” / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1052/thumbnail.jpg

Beyond New Media: Discourse and Critique in a Polymediated Age

Herbig, Art, Herrmann, Andrew F., Tyma, Adam W. 26 April 2016 (has links)
Beyond New Media: Discourse and Critique in a Polymediated Age examines a host of differing positions on media in order to explore how those positions can inform one another and build a basis for future engagements with media theory, research, and practice. Herbig, Herrmann, and Tyma have brought together a number of media scholars with differing paradigmatic backgrounds to debate the relative applicability of existing theories and in doing so develop a new approach: polymediation. Each contributor’s disciplinary background is diverse, spanning interpersonal communication, media studies, organizational communication, instructional design, rhetoric, mass communication, gender studies, popular culture studies, informatics, and persuasion. Although each of these scholars brings with them a unique perspective on media’s role in people’s lives, what binds them together is the belief that meaningful discourse about media must be an ongoing conversation that is open to critique and revision in a rapidly changing mediated culture. By studying media in a polymediated way, Beyond New Media addresses more completely our complex relationship to media(tion) in our everyday lives. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1132/thumbnail.jpg

Feeding without Apology: Maternal Navigations of Distal Discourses in Family Meal Labour

Kinser, Amber E., Denker, Katherine J. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Excerpt: Family meals sit at the intersection of expert advice, child-centred philosophies, workforce demands, and “good” mother ideologies. As researchers and policymakers call for families to increase the frequency of shared family meals to solve a variety of problems related to children’s well-being, we direct our focus toward mothers, who remain largely responsible for this labour. Borrowing from relational dialectics theory, we examine how mothers navigate distal discourses as they talk about the histories, processes, and problems associated with their feeding labour and family meal experiences.
