How memorable socialization messages from within cultural communities shape adult meaning attributions about work| The case of Lebanese-Americans

Homsey, Dini Massad 06 June 2013 (has links)
<p> This dissertation describes the process by which community messaging obligates members to perform work behaviors in order to achieve full membership status&mdash;labeled here the <i>Obligation-based Culturing of Work</i> (<i>OCW</i>). The investigation supports and extends theory regarding the sources and influences of adult meaning attributions about work, and how those meaning attributions can function as a mechanism of cultural maintenance. Constant comparative analysis of 31, face-to-face interviews with members of a Lebanese-American community revealed how anticipatory work socialization emanates from sources other than organizations and is an interpretive process through which influential community members inculcate new generations with memorable messaging. Participants' reported that their community's messaging encouraged them to make sense of work in ways that invited shared mental models about the meaning of work behaviors; then, the community's messaging connected those meanings to the idealized performance of authentic cultural membership. Therefore, memorable community messages constructed cultural identity as at least partially performed in work behaviors. Analysis revealed how the seemingly mundane communication of everyday community and family life is linked to enduring patterns of meaning attributions and work behaviors. OCW supports and extends organizational communication theories like anticipatory organizational socialization, work socialization, and the meaning of work (MOW) as well as intercultural communication theories like cross-cultural adaptation, intercultural fusion, hybridity, and critical cultural transculturation. The dissertation discusses how these findings contribute to knowledge about the interrelationships among messaging about work, cultural maintenance, and community identity.</p>

Factors Influencing Emergency Registered Nurse Satisfaction and Engagement

LaRock-McMahon, Catherine 31 October 2018 (has links)
<p> Employee satisfaction and engagement have a direct impact on customer satisfaction. Dissatisfaction and disengagement lead to an increased intent to leave a job, poor patient outcomes, and decreased productivity. The retention and recruitment of qualified staff becomes an urgent priority to ensure safe and prudent patient care. The purpose of the qualitative research study was to better understand the beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, and reasons for emergency department registered nurses (ED RN) satisfaction and engagement in the workplace focusing on Herzberg&rsquo;s, Vroom&rsquo;s, Yetton&rsquo;s, Maslow&rsquo;s, Benner&rsquo;s, and Kahn&rsquo;s motivation and engagement theoretical frameworks. The qualitative case research study focused on satisfaction and engagement elements using structured interviews of 21 ED nurses from three hospitals of varying sizes and capabilities and included three generational cohorts of Baby Boomer, Generation X, and Millennial RN. Interview analysis showed distinct similarities and differences in nurse satisfaction and work engagement with a consistency in job engagement with no distinct differences among generations. Distinct findings included persistent lack of staff resources, poor communication from leaders, and compassion fatigue among staff. Findings reflected strong interpersonal relationships, teamwork, autonomy, and a strong sense of accomplishment among nurses. Findings indicate that satisfied nurses have improved outcomes, produce happier customers, and feel a sense of accomplishment in the job performed. The positive social impact of this study is in providing guidance on retaining ED RN to provide adequate staffing levels for safe, quality healthcare.</p><p>

Characteristics of transformative listening enacted by organization development practitioners

Cassone, Marco 24 January 2015 (has links)
<p> This study examined the listening behaviors of organization development (OD) practitioners that result in client transformation. Interviews conducted with eleven OD consultants with extensive experience in executive coaching pointed to engaged, focused attention as a core characteristic of their listening. OD practitioners regularly use three primary listening approaches (active, empathetic, and expansive listening) to drive insight and help clients transform their perspectives. Practitioners subsequently use two secondary listening approaches (critical and reductive listening) to anchor insight into action and help clients transform their behavior. Transformative listening describes the repeating process of inquiry that blends primary and secondary listening approaches and tends to transform client perspectives and behavior. Conversely, transactional listening describes a listening approach appropriate for the negotiation and execution of agreements in the transaction of routine business. Self-awareness and use of self foster sensitivity to client needs and practitioner agility in blending the listening approaches used in transformative listening. </p>

The effect of Rooibos on trace elements absorption and biochemical parameters-Amurine model

Kunsevi-Kilola, Carine January 2014 (has links)
Thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master Technologiae: Biomedical Technology In the Faculty of Health and Wellness Sciences At the CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY 2014 / Over the past few decades, it has been shown that various critical diseases including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes associated with free radical generation and low endogenous antioxidant capacity, lead to oxidative stress and cell injury. In recent years, numerous studies have also reported that antioxidants, present in various beverages, vegetables and some foods have attracted a significant research interest due to their potential benefits to human health. However, epidemiological evidence shows a correlation between the intake of food rich in antioxidants and the reduced incidence of some mortality of chronic diseases, certain cancers and coronary heart disease. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of rooibos teas (fermented and unfermented) and green tea as a comparison on the biochemical parameters and the trace element absorption in a rat model. In this study 4 groups of experimental animals were used. All groups had ad libitum access to standard rat chow. Group A, the controls (11 animals), were fed with tap water; group B (11 animals) were fed with the liquid extract of fermented rooibos tea; group C (9 animals) were fed with the liquid extracts of unfermented rooibos and group D (9 animals) were fed with the liquid extract of green tea. All groups were fed for a period of 10 weeks. After the feeding period, the animals were sacrificed by euthanization with intraperitoneal injections of pentobarbital. Blood was sampled by cardiac puncture and centrifuged to obtain the serum. Some elemental analyses were performed with X-ray emission and backscattering. ICP-OES was used to determine the magnesium content. For X-ray emission, backscattering and ICP-OES analyses, 100 μL of each serum sample in a group were added to 2 mL freeze-drying tube. Of the combined specimen, 100 μL was used for the magnesium determination by ICP-OES. The remainder of the combined serum specimens for each group were freeze-dried at -80 ºC and then pressed into a pellet. The pellet was coated with carbon and analyzed using X-ray emission and backscattering. The elemental X-rays of P, S, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Co, Zn, Mo, Ca and Se emitted were quantified to obtain the respective concentrations. Biochemical chemistry analyses were performed on each serum sample of each animal. The biochemical parameters tested for were total protein, albumin, globulin, total bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, total cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine phosphokinase and creatinine. The P concentration increased (p=0.028) when fed with the fermented rooibos tea liquid extract and S content increased when fed with the - the unfermented tea liquid extract (p=0.041). The concentrations of Cl and Cr were not affected (p>0.05) by any of tea liquid extracts. The unfermented rooibos tea liquid extract and the green tea indicated a decrease in the concentrations of Fe (p=0.031 and p=0.032, respectively) and Mn (p=0.041 and p=0.034, respectively). The concentrations of Fe, Zn and Cu in the serum increased when feeding with fermented rooibos tea liquid extract (p=0.024; p=0.030 and p=0.015, respectively) while Se, Mo and Mg concentrations were decreased by the liquid extracts of the fermented, unfermented and green teas (p=0.014, p=0.017 and p=0.011; p=0.024, p=0.026 and p=0.019; p=0.031, p=0.034 and p=0.025, respectively). Concerning the biochemical parameters, the total protein, globulin and the uric acid contents in the serum sample were slightly affected with the green tea extract (p=0.041, p=0.039 and p=0.047 respectively). The albumin, lactate dehydrogenase, blood urea nitrogen, the total cholesterol, the alanine aminotransferase and the aspartate aminotransferase concentrations were not affected (p>0) by any of the tea liquid extracts. However, the total bilirubin content was decreased (p=0.012) when feeding with the fermented rooibos group while the creatine phosphokinase and the creatinine contents were decreased (p=0.042 and p=0.033, respectively) when feeding with the unfermented rooibos tea liquid extract.

Contextually driven messages about gender : an ethnographic study on messages concerning traditional gender behaviors within work, education, romantic relationships, friendships, and exercise

Rockley, Danielle N. I. 01 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis focuses on messages concerning gender that are communicated within contemporary U.S. society. Research consisted of twelve ethnographic interviews with students between the ages of nineteen and twenty-seven from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Society is ever changing and individuals learn rules and either comply, resist or try to change traditional gender behaviors. The social contexts in which an interaction takes places are where many messages concerning gender behavior are communicated. The five areas that this study researched include: work, education, romantic relationships, friendships, and exercise/sports. Work and education are contexts in which progress has occurred; women have the freedom to apply to jobs and schools of their choice. However, some jobs and majors are still male-dominated (i.e. math, science, and engineering majors). There was the most compliance with traditional gender behaviors in romantic relationships, friendships, and in exercise/sports.
