Latourelle-Bernier, Maxime 05 1900 (has links)
This Master’s thesis proposes looking at organizational culture in a new light. In her model of cultural dynamics, Mary Jo Hatch (1993) suggests that a company’s culture influences the identity of the individuals working there. Starting from this affirmation, I ask if the inverse is also possible. Do organizational culture and individual identities evolve together in a dynamic of co-construction? Using a method inspired by the « life story », I conducted a series of interviews at Empire Sports, a Quebec chain of boutiques specializing in extreme sports. I use the communities of practice framework to analyze and interpret the intreviews. My results identify a phenomenon of co-construction at work. I interpret this using a new concept which I call « extreme culture ». The conclusions of this exploratory research suggest that further research in other organizational contexts could be useful in deepening of the concept of extreme culture.

Opening the space : investigating responsivity in the expertise of applied theatre practitioners

Hepplewhite, Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates the expertise of applied theatre practitioners and proposes a concept of 'responsivity' to define their skills, knowledge, qualities and understanding. Practice-responsive research methods were devised to analyse how artists make decisions in-action in a range of applied theatre practice in community, education and health contexts. Research included the use of reflective dialogues following observations of practice, stimulated by joint researcher-practitioner reflection on a video recording of the observed session. Working from detailed analysis of this observed practice and dialogic reflection, new vocabularies are introduced and developed, with the aim of better articulating particular skills and approaches. The role of applied theatre practitioners is multi-faceted and primarily focussed on facilitating positive outcomes for the participants. Planning activity is informed by projected outcomes for the work and the context of practice, such as environment, nature of the participants, individual identities, etc. Practitioner skills build on art form knowledge and the ability to guide activity to create performance outcomes, alongside a concern for aesthetic and ethical issues of the work, as well as social and political awareness of the context. Adaptations to moment-by-moment activity reflect their ability to facilitate engagement and nurture interactive exchange. I suggest that, to manage these multiple demands, practitioners demonstrate heightened attendance to issues of inter-subjectivity and empathy, thereby developing an enhanced expertise in response to the work and the people and contexts involved in that work. The thesis proposes that responsive approaches are common to practitioners and enable her/him to make good choices within the moments of practice. Applied theatre's responsive-ness is indicative of a prioritisation of participant experience, however, the research also revealed the way in which a responsive ethos impacted and enriched the practitioners through supporting their own generative engagement with the work. The critical framework of responsivity proposed in this thesis acknowledges the importance of impact for all participants, including the artists. Whilst the methods and outcomes of applied theatre have received scholarly attention, this research focusses on how practitioners themselves define their expertise, embracing a consideration of skills learning and development. The concepts of response and dialogue informed this investigation in a number of significant ways, and as a result responsivity is proposed as a key methodological imperative for applied theatre research as well as the substantive focus of my thesis. This mode of operating as artists and researchers is particular to applied theatre's overarching aims to be socially responsive, politically engaged, ethically considerate and emancipatory. Responsivity is offered as a way to distinguish applied theatre practice from other performance participation and as an underpinning ethos for understanding the expertise of applied theatre practitioners.

From the Outside In: A Multivariate Correlational Analysis of Effectiveness in Communities of Practice

Bomar, Shannon Hulbert 08 1900 (has links)
Online communities of practice (CoPs) provide social spaces for people to connect, learn, and engage with one another around shared interests and passions. CoPs are innovatively employed within industry and education for their inherent knowledge management characteristics and as a means of improving professional practice. Measuring the success of a CoP is a challenge researchers are examining through various strategies. Recent literature supports measuring community effectiveness through the perceptions of its members; however, evaluating a community by means of member perception introduces complicating factors from outside the community. In order to gain insight into the importance of external factors, this quantitative study examined the influence of factors in the professional lives of educators on their perceptions of their CoP experience. Through an empirical examination of CoPs employed to connect educators and advance their professional learning, canonical correlation analysis was used to examine correlations between factors believed to be influential on the experiences of community members.

The focus of the observation were three Pedagogy students participating in the PUC-SP (CoP OBEDUC) core of the Observatory of Education project entitled “Collaborative Network of Practices in Teacher Training to Teach Mathematics: multiple looks, dialogues and contexts”. This thesis aims to identify the contribution of the participation in CoP OBEDUC for the formative process of these students of Pedagogy to teach Mathematics in the initial years of Elementary School. This study is inserted in the context of social learning theory, which considers social participation as an element that promotes learning. It was used the concept of Community of Practice (Etienne Wenger), which integrates the necessary elements to characterize social participation as a process of learning and knowing. The concept of Community of Practice considers these elements – meaning, practice, community and identity – to be deeply intertwined and mutually defining. For this purpose, actions were taken to observe the contribution of practice in the teaching education of the research, considering their experience in CoP OBEDUC. It was proposed an intervention in the classroom, of elaborating a Mathematics task to be developed in pairs formed by a student of Pedagogy and a teacher of the initial years of Elementary School. The process took place in four stages, inspired by the processes of self-confrontation and cross-self-confrontation (Yves Clot), all of them recorded in audio and video, which included the planning of the action, the development of the task in classroom, together with the teacher of the class, a meeting of confrontation for each pair and a general meeting with the participation of members of CoP OBEDUC, the latter two with the analysis of the scenes from the first two. All this process has contributed to teaching training and has promoted learning of teaching to teach Mathematics. The students have felt themselves inserted, identified with the profession, an evidence of the constitution of teaching identity. It was considered that these learning has occurred due to the set of experiences lived during the period in which they participated in CoP OBEDUC and by the influence of the multiple experiences to which they have been exposed during the considered period. The results indicate that the participation in CoP OBEDUC has allowed the reflection and the interaction with peers, promoting teaching learning of both students and experienced teachers, the negotiation of meanings generated in the dual movement of participation and reification, by the constitution of teacher identity and by practice / O tema desta pesquisa é a aprendizagem para a docência e para o ensino de Matemática de estudantes de Pedagogia ao participarem de uma Comunidade de Prática e ao acompanharem o trabalho de professores dos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental.

Barros, Ana Paula Rodrigues Magalhães de January 2019 (has links)
Research has shown how the use of software, video, and other online materials are contributing to the teaching and learning of Mathematics. However, it is noticeable that the potentialities of the Internet have been poorly used in Mathematics classes. In this sense, even when the classroom – characterized by its complexity – uses internet resources, teaching and learning practices will mostly express a culture socially produced when the Internet was not present. Therefore, this research seeks to understand cultural practices (re)constituted in mathematics classes mediated by the Internet in a hybrid environment. The research is based on qualitative investigation, and on collaborative work between myself and two grade 10 teachers from public schools in the state of São Paulo. One school was a regular school in the city of Vinhedo, and the other was a technical school in the city of Nova Odessa. In both schools, classes were focused on the concept of function, and the features of a hybrid environment were considered during class implementation. Narrative analysis was used to communicate the knowledge built from the data produced in the two classrooms, which are acknowledged in this research as complex systems. As such, the data was analyzed from the lens of Complexity Science. Research outcomes show that teaching is facilitated by the potentialities of a hybrid environment in orde... The approach of nature of science subsidized by filmic resources in a community of practice

Edson Rodrigues Santana 26 November 2014 (has links)
This paper discusses the contributions of a community of practice (CoP) in the continuing education of science teachers, in order to address the issue of the nature of science (NoS) with the use of film resources of commercial broadcasting. For this purpose, two courses were developed in cooperation with the University of São Paulo and offered by the Faculty of Education. The courses were offered for two semesters of 2012, periodically on Saturdays and teachers voluntarily participated in the courses. Initially it had not been intended to apply two courses; however, at the request of teachers, as documented in the data, it was necessary to create the second course. Moreover, we point out that the continued training for teachers in service could insert such issues and thus contribute to the understanding of teachers about this topic. The main source of data is the transcripts of speeches and analysis of didactic sequences produced by teachers. The methodological guidance, as well as data analysis, was guided by the assumptions of qualitative research in education. We highlight as tools of data collection the following instruments: field notes, questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, audio-visual record of all meetings, didactic sequences prepared by teachers and information contained in electronic messages (e-mails). The analysis of data was performed in two occasions. The moment I is characterized in the first course and focused in investigating the conceptions of teachers as well as identify possible changes. Moment II, specifically about data from the second course, brings deepening analysis of the interactions that are established in the CoP. Categories and subcategories for this analysis are drawn. The results show that there are still problems in the conceptions of teachers; however, as they were immersed in typical situations of CoP and with the mediation of the use of film resources, it was possible to identify changes, even subtle conceptions of the NoS. The most important is noticed in the interactions between teachers and the mutual engagement and sharing of ideas and practices to try to introduce both subject filmic resources with students\' own teachers surveyed. This can be explained because the mechanisms of action of autonomy and leadership teacher were contemplated by participating in CoP that values and encourages sharing among individuals who identify in practices and ideas.

Development of a community of practice in computer music in schools : design, itinerary and modeling

Galleron, Philippe 10 July 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is the study of an experiment in a situation of collective electroacoustic composition from the point of view of the development of a community of practice. It was carried out in France, during the school year 2013/2014, in two classes of public elementary school Pasquier of the city of Antony located in Paris suburbs. We are therefore talking about a collective teaching of music to young children on school time realized in a co-teaching school between a teacher and a music teacher.Étienne Wenger's "theory of community of practice" will be used as a grid of reading and a prism through which we analyze the interactions of participants in an experiment of group music pedagogy conducted in school. We will study learning situations in this situation via inter-community and intra-community interactions, which are partly mediated by computer artifacts (audio files of musical selections, digital photos, publications and Internet availability, e-mail communication, etc.). As such, we have been interested in the use and the role played by information and communication technologies (ICT) in the exchanges of the community and in the theories of documentary sciences. Finally, we propose the construction of a pedagogical action model focusing on the interactions that we consider to be transposable to the university teaching of music composition in the Max and Pure Data environment in the Music Department of Paris 8 University.

Developing Critically Conscious Pre-Service Teachers: A Social Justice Approach to Educate Culturally Linguistically Diverse Students

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: One of the major issues confronting education in Arizona and across the United States has been the consistent low performance of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in comparison to their peers as evidenced by the disparity of the achievement gap at every level in the educational pipeline. A contributing factor has been the lack of teacher preparation focused on teaching CLD students. Preparation focused on a culturally responsive curriculum about dispositions and pedagogical knowledge and skills as well as field experience placement with CLD students have been previously identified areas to consider when training preservice teachers (PSTs). Therefore, this study examined how a Culturally Responsive and Linguistic Teaching (CRLT) Framework would raise preservice teacher’s critical consciousness about teaching CLD students. The CRLT Framework focused on two specific areas; (a) a culturally responsive curriculum and (b) a team-based service-learning experience. The CRP curriculum included lessons designed to increase PSTs understanding about how their sociolinguist views influenced their pedagogical knowledge about teaching CLD students. In addition, the team-based service-learning approach, as a community of practice, provided experiences for PSTs to apply theory to practice. A mixed method analysis was employed to collect and analyze the quantitative data (surveys) and qualitative data (interviews and photovoice). Results from this study suggested increases in PSTs’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and perceptions of usefulness of CRP in their future practices. The team-based, service-learning component, which was based on a community of practice framework, enhanced the learning experience by allowing students to move from theory to practice and served as an important contributing factor to the overall results. Given the findings of this research study, it appeared that an introductory course focused on a culturally responsive and linguistic teaching influenced PSTs’ dispositions, knowledge, and skills. Thus, providing an introductory course, earlier rather than later, has the potential to change the trajectory of preparing PSTs so they were more prepared to teach CLD students as they continued through their program of study. Results showed effective work with CLD students was about so much more than ‘just good teaching.’ / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2019
