[en] VALUE STREAM MAPPING: SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE / [pt] VALUE STREAM MAPPING: UMA REVISÃO SISTEMÁTICA DA LITERATURA

DENISE LOYOLA SILVA 12 February 2016 (has links)
[en] The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is one of the Lean Production tools that has been widely discussed in the literature for mapping production processes and services with a focus on reduction of waste and non-value added time. Despite the growing number of publications on the subject, the academic literature reveals the absence of systematic research to present the state of the art. Thus, this dissertation, through a systematic and thorough review of the literature, aims to gather information on the VSM to identify its main characteristics, trends and opportunities for new developments and future research. The review includes 263 abstracts and 91 articles selected for review and classification. The study proposes a synthesis in the form of framework, presenting as VSM is adopted in certain contexts and motivations, tracing a better understanding of how the tool is implemented and their outputs and outcomes that can be generated. It was noticed that the VSM is rapidly spreading to the service sector, especially health care and logistics. However, studies have reported that the implementation of the VSM in practice is a time consuming process. Problems related to resistance in improvements involving changes in the workforce and demand for limited internal resources, have stimulated some researchers to question the use of the tool. This dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the topic and provides directions for future research and VSM practices.

The role of intrapreneurship in a globally competitive technology business environment : a design concept and empirical study

Platzek, Bernd Peter 26 September 2012 (has links)
The background of this examination is that we live in a dynamic and complex global business environment which requires entrepreneurial thinking and action in organisations (intrapreneurship) if they are to secure viability. Companies in dynamic environments have to deal efficiently with operational tasks in existing businesses and at the same time achieve innovation in existing and new business with a medium to long term focus. This requires flexibility and adaptability to be able to use the opportunities and threats arising from changes in the business environment. The research work in this thesis clarifies the role of intrapreneurship and develops the design concept for holistic intrapreneurship. In the research process a frame of reference with five central findings on the role of intrapreneurship in a dynamic business environment is firstly introduced. In this process, the idea is that holistic and economic thinking together with management oriented theoretical concepts form a fruitful basis for the examination of intrapreneurship. Subsequently in the literature study there follows a synoptic illustration of the individual theoretical concepts on the role of intrapreneurship, the business environment and systems theory concepts. In a further literature analysis, the tasks identified for holistic intrapreneurship are examined and conveyed as a design concept in the synthesis. Three empirical studies reflect the theoretical findings in practical situations. Taking into account the results of the survey, the design concept is extended by elements for the development of a vital, entrepreneurial learning organisation. Entrepreneurial organisations have equally to understand the role of intrapreneurship as a concept for shaping the future as the external environments and the interaction between the organisation and its environment. This complex of themes is worked on in chapter 3 and nine design elements for the specification of the role of intrapreneurship are derived. On the basis of this, entrepreneurial information gathering, shaping of the future and organisation design are derived as central tasks of the entrepreneurial organisation and are analysed in chapter 4. A design concept for holistic intrapreneurship with a role model for the organisation, a conceptual framework for the understanding and analysis of the global business environment as well as a qualitative systems model for the interaction of the entrepreneurial organisation with the business environment is introduced in chapter 5 to aid with implementation of the entrepreneurial tasks. The role of intrapreneurship and the implementation of the role model in practice are examined in chapter 6. In this process, implementation of the role model based on the division of labour is recorded and condensed across all firms. In chapter 6.4, learning areas for the development of an entrepreneurial orientation and for a context-related strengthening of the five entrepreneurial roles in a vital entrepreneurial learning organisation are outlined. The novel contribution of the thesis is to present an integrated concept of holistic intrapreneurship derived from theory-based exploration which thus focuses on the entrepreneurial action of the organisation as a whole and the achievement of viability in a global and dynamic environment. This concept contains learning by the entrepreneurial actors, the entrepreneurial teams and the whole entrepreneurial organisation and defines the building blocks of a vital, entrepreneurial learning organisation. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) / unrestricted

A Conceptual Framework to Guide the Design, Delivery and Evaluation of Quality Mobile Learning Experiences

Kellam, Hugh James Dowler January 2015 (has links)
Mobile learning has the pedagogical potential to provide informal, context-based educational experiences that can teach practical and applicable workplace skills and behaviors. The goal of this study was to examine the learning experiences and outcomes of healthcare professionals as they participated in a mobile learning activity designed to teach them the technical and procedural skills for facilitating clinical consultations via videoconference. The primary research question was: How does the use of a curriculum framework to design mobile learning experiences impact the learning experiences and outcomes of healthcare professionals with regards to developing workplace skills and understanding clinical processes? Informed by a systematic review of the mobile learning literature, this dissertation proposed a conceptual framework to guide the implementation and evaluation of mobile learning based on five dimensions of instructional design: content, structure, delivery, usability and communities of practice. Physicians, nurses and healthcare administrators voluntarily participated in this pragmatic, mixed methods study. Their quantitative and qualitative feedback was utilized both to assess the validity of the proposed mobile learning experience conceptual framework as well as its quantitative and qualitative evaluation tools. The study found that informal, contextual mobile learning content can promote communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals, and provide them with hands-on learning experiences that can be easily situated in a specific workplace environment. Delivery was identified as perhaps the most critical element in increasing motivation and interactivity among participants, and communities of practice after the learning activity were found to increase collaboration and provide opportunities for problem-solving. The structure of embedding the informal mobile learning experience within a formal, didactic online learning course was also found by participants to provide the right mix of background knowledge and practical application to produce meaningful learning outcomes. Overall, the mobile learning experience conceptual framework synthesizes best practices in the literature and proposes innovative methods for the design and evaluation of effective mobile learning.

Beyond Transition: Understanding Workplace Integration of Internationally Educated Nurses - A Qualitative Case Study

Ramji, Zubeida January 2016 (has links)
Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) have been proposed as one solution to dealing with the nursing shortage in Canada. In addition to helping sustain the profession, IENs are reflective of the diverse patient populations in Canada. Investments will ensure healthy workplaces for and retention of IENs. There has been a growing interest about IENs’ experiences with migration and navigating through the regulatory process, but research on their post-transition experience is lacking. Workplace integration for IENs is not well understood and the role of the employer has received limited focus. Guided by critical social theory, an instrumental qualitative case study approach was used to examine a single organization, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, with a history of supporting IENs. A purposeful sample of twenty-eight participants included diverse IENs who were post-transition, and stakeholders from various vantage points. Four forms of data collection were used: semi-structured interviews; socio-demographic survey; review of documents and focus groups. Thematic analysis was carried out to form a within subcase analysis first, followed by an across subcase analysis. The major themes are: (a) when “integrated”, an IEN is (i) being a “Canadian nurse with international experience”; (ii) progressing on the leadership journey; and (iii) persevering in overcoming challenges; (b) organizational factors that influence workplace integration of IEN are (i) workforce diversity; (ii) leadership commitment to equity; (iii) policies promoting equity principles; (iv) engagement with the broader community; and (v) avoiding common pitfalls. This research offers a definition and conceptual framework where workplace integration of IENs is a “two-way” process within an inclusive and valuing context, producing changes both at the IEN as well as organizational levels.

Perceptions of resilience by caregivers of children in a residential care facility

Baron, Andreas January 2013 (has links)
This study, aimed at analysing the methods used by caregivers to construct their own resilience at a residential care facility for orphaned and vulnerable children, forms part of a larger study investigating the role of emotional awareness in caregivers. Convenience selection was used for the research site on account of accessibility, and purposive selection for the participants owing to their role as caregivers at the care facility. The qualitative case study method facilitated contextual investigation of the matter at hand. Data were collected by means of a focus group discussion with seven participants, individual interviews with four participants, and the researcher’s informal observations in order to elucidate the main research question: How do formal caregivers of orphaned and vulnerable children construct their own resilience? Kumpfer’s Resilience Framework served as the theoretical foundation for the study. Thematic analysis of the data yielded the following themes: demonstrating resilience when functioning within an unsupportive environment; demonstrating resilience when establishing a sense of control; demonstrating resilience through belief; and resilience born out of identity as a caregiver. Results were related to existing literature and the theoretical framework. Furthermore, a conceptual framework for the South African context is suggested. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / lk2014 / Educational Psychology / MEd / Unrestricted

Towards a mutually sustainable environmentally friendly information technology policy framework for South African small, medium and micro enterprises

Wessels, Janelle 05 July 2011 (has links)
A number of problems have served as motivators for this study: Environmental deterioration as a risk to economic facilitation; missed organisational green competitive opportunities; South Africa's need as a developing country for the growth of small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs); and information technologies as an aid for ecological and economical problems. Accordingly, this research has aimed to suggest environment-friendly information technology policies that can be implemented in South African SMMEs, engendering mutually beneficial sustainability for the three domains (or contextual study elements) ‘Environment’, ‘Organisation’ and ‘Information Technology’. The methodology used involves an interpretive research approach, a literature survey based on document analyses, and an empirical study based on green information technology expert interviews. In collecting the data, the theory of three of the five Multiple Perspectives Approach perspective types was applied; for the data analysis, the Hierarchical and Signed components constituting the Directed Graphing Method where applied. The output of this study includes an explanation of the relationships that exist between the study elements and that lead to mutually beneficial sustainability. It also includes the identification of Key Sustainability Factors for each of the research elements, as high level critical goals to be achieved by green information technology policy developers in pursuing mutually beneficial sustainability. Furthermore, the output contains contextually consolidated Key Sustainability Factor Enablers, to serve as policy recommendations for implementation by green information technology practitioners toward ensuring mutually beneficial sustainability; and, finally, a sample integration of these Key Sustainability Factor Enablers, now referred to as Conceptual Policy Views, such as may have been produced by typical green information technology policy developers in selecting and prioritising views for organisational utilisations. In answering the main research question of this study, as well as providing its key outcome, a conceptual framework has been produced which comprises information technology policies that are supported to be feasible for implementation as well as of mutual benefit in terms of sustainability for the ‘Environment’, South African SMME ‘Organisations’ and ‘Information Technology’ itself. This provides an ordered and related means of implementing information technology policies, while also relating these policies to their respective mutually beneficial Key Sustainability Factors. Strategic planning, toward incorporating the conceptual framework into organisational policy, is thus enabled. This study concludes with an evaluation of its findings and execution, together with future research recommendations. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Informatics / unrestricted

Modelling spatiotemporal patterns of childhood HIV/TB related mortality and malnutrition: applications to Agincourt data in rural South Africa

Musenge, Eustasius 18 February 2014 (has links)
Background: South Africa accounts for more than a seventh of the global population living with HIV/AIDS and TB, and ranks highest in HIV/TB co-infection worldwide. Consequent high child mortality is exacerbated by child malnutrition, which is an important indicator of health status and is associated with morbidity as well as mortality. Rural areas usually present with the greatest burden of morbidity and mortality, yet the extent of geographical disparities in child mortality, malnutrition and HIV/TB has hardly been explored. This is a reservoir of information useful for effective public health interventions. In this thesis we investigated the factors associated with childhood HIV/TB mortality and malnutrition, how they interrelate and their spatial distribution in the rural Agincourt sub-district located in north-east South Africa close to the border with Mozambique. Rationale: Africa at large lacks data that are routinely and reliably collected then validated, to guide policy and intervention programmes. Causes of deaths and even death counts are often misclassified and underestimated respectively, especially for children. To bridge this gap, a health and socio-demographic surveillance systems located in the rural Agincourt sub-district hosts which annually collects and collates data on vital events including fertility, mortality and migration. These data have been collected since 1992 to-date and now cover 80,000 people living in more than 16,000 households situated in 27 villages; all households are fully geo-coded. These hierarchical data allow us to address several epidemiological questions on how person, place (spatial) and time (temporality) have impacted on mortality and malnutrition patterns in children living in the rural Agincourt sub-district. Objectives: The aims of this thesis were both methodological and applied: Methodological (1) To investigate the presence of spatial autocorrelation in the Agincourt sub-district and model this using geographical and geo-statistical procedures (2) To model large spatial random effects accurately and efficiently (3) To model hierarchical data with zero inflated outcomes Applied (1) To investigate childhood HIV/TB mortality determinants and their geographical distribution using retrospective and cross-sectional data (2) To determine factors associated with malnutrition outcomes adjusting for their multivariate spatial random effects and selection bias for children under five years (3) To model how the associated factors were interrelated as either underlying or proximate factors of child mortality or malnutrition using pathway analysis. Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis based on retrospective and cross-sectional data collected from 1992 to 2010 from the Agincourt sub-district in rural northeast South Africa. During the period of our study 71,057 children aged 0 to 9 years from 15,703 households were observed. All the data in the thesis were for children aged 1 to under 5 except for the chapter 6 (last paper) who were aged from 0 to 9 years of age. Child HIV/TB death and malnutrition were the outcome measures; mortality was derived from physicianbased verbal autopsy. We investigated presence of spatial autocorrelation using Moran’s and Geary’s coefficients, semi-variograms and estimated the spatial parameters using Bayesianbased univariate and multivariate procedures. Regression modelling that adjusted for spatial random effects was done using linear regression and zero inflated variants for logistic, Poisson and Negative Binomial regression models. Structural equation models were used in modelling the complex relationships between multiple exposures and child HIV/TB mortality and malnutrition portrayed by conceptual frameworks. Risk maps were drawn based on spatial residuals (posteriors) with prediction (kriging) procedures used to estimate for households where no data were observed. Statistical inference on parameter estimation was done using both the frequentist; maximum likelihood estimation and Bayesian; Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) directly and sometimes aided with Metropolis Hastings or Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA). Results: The levels of child under-nutrition in this area were: 6.6% wasted, 17.3% stunted and 9.9% underweight. Moran’s (I) and Geary’s (c) coefficients indicated that there was global and local clustering respectively. Estimated severity of spatial variation using the partial-sill-to-sill ratio yielded 12.1%, 4.7% and 16.5%, for weight-for-age, height-for-age and weight-for-height Z-scores measures respectively. Maternal death had the greatest negative impact on child HIV/TB mortality. Other determinants included being a male child and belonging to a household that had experienced multiple deaths. A protective effect was found in households with better socio-economic status and where older children were present. Pathway analyses of these factors showed that HIV had a significant mediator effect and the greatest worsening effect on malnutrition after controlling for low birth-weight selection bias Several spatial hot spots of mortality and malnutrition were observed, with these regions consistently emerging as areas of greater risk, which reinforces geographical differentials in these public health indicators. Conclusion: Modelling that adjusts for spatial random effects, is a potentially useful technique to disclose hidden patterns. These geographical differences are often ignored in epidemiological regression modelling resulting in reporting of biased estimates. Proximate and underlying determinants, notably socioeconomic status and maternal deaths, impacteddirectly and indirectly on child mortality and malnutrition. These factors are highly relevant locally and should be used to formulate interventions to reduce child mortality. Spatial prediction maps can guide policy on where to best target interventions. Child interventions can be more effective if there is a dual focus: treatment and care for those already HIV/TB infected, coupled with prevention in those geographical areas of greatest risk. Public health population-level interventions aimed at reducing child malnutrition are pivotal in lowering morbidity and mortality in remote areas. Keywords: HIV/TB, Child mortality, Child malnutrition, Conceptual framework, Spatial analysis, MCMC, Path analysis, South Africa
