Sharp edges and other lessons

Unknown Date (has links)
Sharp Edges and Other Lessons is a collection of stories that share a loose thematic link suggested by the title. The various "lessons" encountered by the characters here represent the ways people respond to the many currents and fluctuations roiling beneath the surface of everyday life. / by Michael Gray. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Add It Up

Unknown Date (has links)
Prone to immaturity, restlessness, and rash behavior, Kel was never exactly the epitome of responsibility ; however, despite her longtime tendency to veer toward all that is childish, she somehow managed to hold her life together- except for the times she didn't. Add It Up tells the story of exactly that:"the times she didn't." Like an epic poem, Add It Up is a collection of lyric essays chronicling a journey. Starting even before her very beginning, it gives insight into exactly what it is that made her what she was, what she is, and what she intends to be. The pieces of this collection, Prologue, or The Letter I Wish I Wrote Myself Four Years Ago ; Kelpedia ; A Little Bit Peter ; Breakdowns ; Wyrd ; (un)fair ; Kindred ; and Kellypedia, can stand alone, but it's way better if they don't ; it's way better if you add them up. / by Kelly McIntyre. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

A group experience in counseling Black conduct disordered adolescents

Parker, Kenneth 01 May 1990 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to confirm whether or not group counseling improves the self-concept and associated behaviors in Black American adolescents who are assessed to be conduct disordered. The instruments utilized in the study are the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale and the Devereux Adolescent Behavior Rating Scale. Twenty (20) subjects were randomly selected from a population of behavior disordered adolescents. Ten (10) subjects were randomly placed in control and ten (10) experimental groups. The study was implemented by two counselors employed by the community agency conducting the study. Two (2) hypotheses were examined in this study. Analysis of Covariance was used to analyze the data. The variables selected for the study included the following: Positive Score-Identity, Moral-Ethical Self, Personal Self, Total Positive Score, Unethical Behavior, Defiant-Resistive, Poor Emotional Control and Inability Defiant-Resistive, Poor Emotional Control and Inability to Delay. The two null hypotheses were rejected and were significant at the p<.05 level indicating a significant difference between the control and experimental groups. The results of this study supported the hypotheses that Black American conduct disordered adolescents who received group counseling will have significantly higher self-concept and behavioral profiles than adolescents who do not receive such counseling. The utilization of this counseling modality can improve the behaviors of Black American adolescents who have conduct disorders.

Sense of Humor and Conduct of Innovation: Personalities.

Hsieh, Su-Wen 01 September 2010 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the inter-relation between sense of humor and conduct of innovation on a comparative analysis towards different personalities. The samples of this study were under the employment of 30 different public and private firms and organizations on questionnaires. The measure instruments used in this study include ¡§Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale,¡¨ ¡§Conduct of Innovation,¡¨ ¡§Locus of Control Scales,¡¨ ¡§Type A Personality,¡¨ and ¡§Positive and Negative Affectivities Scales.¡¨ The effective samples of this study were 1213 employees. The survey was to prove that sense of humor is a predictable factor of the conduct of innovation. Also, it was to investigate if different personalities and other variables would do direct interferences to one¡¦s sense of humor, conduct of innovation and to every developing stage of the above mentioned. The variables of personality include ¡§Locus of Control,¡¨ ¡§Positive Affectivity¡¨ and ¡§Negative Affectivity.¡¨ The results of this study could be summarized as follows: 1.Sense of Humor and Conduct of Innovation are predictable. 2.¡§Locus of Control¡¨ is not an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation. 3.¡§Type A Personality¡¨ is an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation. 4.¡§Positive affectivity¡¨ is not an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation. 5.¡§Negative affectivity¡¨ is not an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation.

Adult outcomes of childhood and adolescent depression

Harrington, Richard Charles January 1991 (has links)
The study was based on the clinical data summaries ("item sheets") of children who attended the Maudsley Hospital during the late 1960s and early 1970s. These summaries were used to identify a group of 80 child and adolescent psychiatric patients with an operationally defined depressive syndrome. The depressed children were individually matched with 80 non-depressed psychiatric controls on demographic variables and non-depressive childhood symptoms by a computer algorithm. At follow-up, on average 18 years after the initial contact, information was obtained on the adult psychiatric status of 82% of the total sample. Adult assessments were made "blind" to case/control status, and included standardized measures of "lifetime" psychiatric disorder and psychosocial functioning. The depressed group was at increased risk for affective disorder in adult life, and had elevated risks of psychiatric hospitalization and psychiatric treatment. Depressed children were no more likely than control children to have non-depressive adult psychiatric disorders. These findings suggest that there is substantial specificity in the continuity of affective disturbances between childhood and adult life.
