Industry construction of the meaning of corporate identity in Nigeria's banking services sector : an interpretive analysis of corporate advertisements, 1970-2005

Otubanjo, Babasola Olutayo January 2008 (has links)
This thesis seeks to examine how the meaning of corporate identity was constructed through the corporate advertisements that were published in Nigeria's national press media between 1970 and 2005 by the major operators in the Nigerian banking industry. In order to accomplish this task, this research has been divided into ten chapters. The first chapter introduces the research. It conceptualises a research question and provides an overall trajectory for this thesis. Chapter two established four ontologically grounded reasons for pursuing this research from the social constructionist perspective and chapter three sought to examine how the meaning of corporate identity was constructed (in theoretical literature) between 1970 and 2008. Chapter four presents an analysis of the construction of the meaning of the concept of corporate identity in the Nigerian banking industry between 1970 and 2005. Chapter six concerns research methodology and the specific research method drawn to address the question being investigated in this research. Chapters seven and eight presents the empirical findings and chapter nine makes an attempt to establish what has been accomplished in the process of this research by discussing its outcomes. Chapter ten concludes the thesis. It considers the contributions emerging from this research and its implications in terms of relevance for corporate identity theory and practice. In addition, it examines the limitations of the research as well as possible future research directions of this study. Finally, the thesis ends with a summary and conclusion. Findings from this research indicate the emergence of four new scholarships, namely generic, distinctive, innovative and transformative corporate personalities. Importantly, the outcome of this study provides ample evidence to argue that the industry construction of the meaning of corporate identity witnessed an ongoing flow of changes and stabilities, which run through these new scholarships.

Psychological theories and lay accounts of occupational choice : a comparative study of mechanical engineering and nursing undergraduates

Moir, James January 1990 (has links)
Psychological investigation of occupational choice has traditionally followed one of two dominant approaches. The structural (or 'personality-matching') approach (e.g., Holland, 1985) has used pysychometric testing to predict occupational choice on the basis of personality assessments whilst the process (or 'developmental') approach (e.g., Ginzberg et al., 1951) has mainly used interview responses to identify stages in the maturation of vocational thinking culminating 'realistic' decision-~aking. The aim of this study was to test the utility of these approaches in undertaking a detailed analysis of interview data. Garfinkel's (1967) proposal that decisions can be viewed as the retrospective construction of 'sense-able' accounts provided a useful perspective on collected interview responses. A discourse analysis approach was adopted in which the functional nature of language, as achieving interactive purposes, was stressed (Potter and Wetherell, 1987). Finally, use was made of the conversation analytic focus on turn-taking in order to examine the interdependent nature of the question-and-answer turns of the interviews (e.g., Sacks, 1972). Forty undergraduate students following the BSc courses in mechanical engineering and nursing at Dundee Institute of Technology were interviewed. The sample consisted of twenty students from each course, ten from the first year and ten from the final year. Comparisons were made between the two vocational groups and between first and final year students. A preliminary examination of course selection interviews was also undertaken. The data could not be categorized in accordance with Holland's 'personality patterns' for mechanical engineering and nursing, nor in terms of Ginzberg's 'realistic stage' of vocational thinking, due to categorization conflicts and within-interview response variability. The apparent contradictions and complexities generated by categorizing responses in these terms were clarified when accounts were analyzed as ongoing constructions of 'sense-able' choices within which 'personality-expressive' and 'developmental-stage' talk served specific conversational functions. The findings call into question methods of careers guidance based on these theories and it is argued that attention should be directed at career-selection preparation. However, it should be noted that a focus on the conversational skills required to succeed in selection interviews could challenge faith in a meritocratic selection system.

An Empirical Investigation of Personal and Situational Factors That Relate to the Formation of Entrepreneurial Intentions

Summers, David F. (David Frederic), 1948- 08 1900 (has links)
New entrepreneurial organizations emerge as a result of careful thought and action. Therefore, entrepreneurship may be considered an example of planned behavior. Previous research suggests that intentions are the single best predictor of planned behavior. Given the significance of intentions, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the personal characteristics of the entrepreneur and perceived environmental factors, and entrepreneurial intentions.

Sense of Humor and Conduct of Innovation: Personalities.

Hsieh, Su-Wen 01 September 2010 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the inter-relation between sense of humor and conduct of innovation on a comparative analysis towards different personalities. The samples of this study were under the employment of 30 different public and private firms and organizations on questionnaires. The measure instruments used in this study include ¡§Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale,¡¨ ¡§Conduct of Innovation,¡¨ ¡§Locus of Control Scales,¡¨ ¡§Type A Personality,¡¨ and ¡§Positive and Negative Affectivities Scales.¡¨ The effective samples of this study were 1213 employees. The survey was to prove that sense of humor is a predictable factor of the conduct of innovation. Also, it was to investigate if different personalities and other variables would do direct interferences to one¡¦s sense of humor, conduct of innovation and to every developing stage of the above mentioned. The variables of personality include ¡§Locus of Control,¡¨ ¡§Positive Affectivity¡¨ and ¡§Negative Affectivity.¡¨ The results of this study could be summarized as follows: 1.Sense of Humor and Conduct of Innovation are predictable. 2.¡§Locus of Control¡¨ is not an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation. 3.¡§Type A Personality¡¨ is an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation. 4.¡§Positive affectivity¡¨ is not an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation. 5.¡§Negative affectivity¡¨ is not an interference factor to one¡¦s sense of humor and conduct of innovation.

The personality profile of Zululand taxi drivers

Ntuli, Velaphi Herbert January 2017 (has links)
A mini dissertation submitted to the Faculty Of Arts in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master Of Arts in Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University Of Zululand, 2017 / The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a contributory relationship between the common unwanted behaviour of taxi drivers towards taxi commuters and the taxi drivers’ personality. The study involved 59 minibus taxi drivers sampled from the Empangeni and Richards Bay areas of the Zululand district. The participants were randomly selected in their respective taxi ranks/stations around the above mentioned areas. The Big Five 10-Item Personality Inventory and a tailored questionnaire were administered in an interview format. The findings depicted that the unacceptable behaviour usually portrayed by taxi drivers towards taxi commuters is not caused by the taxi drivers’ personality. They further illustrate that the nature of the profession, which induces pressure on the driver, is one of the main causes of the behaviour. The taxi commuters were reported to be largely the ones who cause most of the conflicts that arise between drivers and passengers. The more experience (in years) the driver had in the taxi driving job the more acceptable and non-provoking his style of interacting with taxi commuters becomes. The reciprocal determinism theory was used to psychologically conceptualise the outcome behaviour of the taxi driver taking into strong consideration his personal cognitive choices, emotions, past experiences and his environment in the work place.

Lietuvos mokyklinės geografijos asmenybės ir jų darbai / Lithuanian school geography personalities and their works

Skorbuvienė, Vilma 24 September 2008 (has links)
The research on the biographies of personalities is a long and complex process, however interesting. The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze and systematize personalities who created school geography and review the works they performed. While researching, the general features of Lithuanian school development, which can be divided into eight terms, were reviewed. In this work basing on the empirical biographical research method thirty three biographies of personalities who formed Lithuanian school geography content were described. The essential features of personalities biographies were singled out and bibliography of school geography was systematized. While arranging the study, biographic, historical, bibliographic, professiograms methods were used. These methods let explore the way personalities passed and the jobs created in various aspects. The novelty of this work is that the first time the research on personalities who created school geography has been performed in a broad – brush way; original research methodology was used and the professiograms of personalities were drawn up. This study is practically meaningful because the material of this research was used for the directory of the most famous Lithuanian geographers which was issued in 2007. And the presentation of this directory occurred in 2008. The results of this work are suitable to be used during geography studies, and a part of this material is also suitable to be used in school geography course.

What makes a hero : An investigation of players’ personality and their choice of hero class in a MOBA

Isaksson, Camilla, Bagstevold, Dennis January 2015 (has links)
This study investigates how a player’s personality type might affect a player’s choice of playable character class and, by extension, their playstyle in a MOBA game. 6014 participants completed a survey consisting of questions regarding most played character and their preferred character to play. Following this their personality types were set using the Big-Five personality type model. Results show several interesting correlations between a player’s choice of character class, player motivation, and personality traits. For instance, players most often playing the Support or Warrior hero class tend to score higher on agreeableness. Certain differences between male and female players are also noted.
