Determining food web impacts on experimental aquatic systems from the disposal of oil sands process-affected waste materials.

Elshayeb, Monalisa January 2006 (has links)
Current mining operators in the Athabasca oil sands deposit of Alberta, Canada have made commitments to zero discharge of oil sands process-affected waste materials (OSPM) from the mine site and rehabilitation of mined lands to a pre-mining state. As part of aquatic reclamation efforts, experimental test sites that contain a range of OSPM (solid and liquid components) were constructed to monitor the evolution and viability of aquatic habitats used as disposal sinks for OSPM produced by mining activities. In the present study, stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur were used to gauge some of the potential effects of OSPM site construction methods on aquatic food webs. Carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures of sediment, dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic matter, periphytic material, plants, plankton, aquatic invertebrates and fish were used to assess differences related to the naphthenic acid (NA) concentration in OSPM and reference sites. For statistical analyses, sites were grouped into low (0 to 4 mg/L), medium (4 to 15 mg/L) and high (> 15 mg/L) NA concentrations. There were no significant differences in food web area or food web length among the low, medium and high NA concentration sites. In most cases, sample carbon isotope analyses of low, medium and high NA concentration sites were not significantly different, suggesting food web carbon sources did not include significant contributions from OSPM materials at OSPM sites. Significant differences, however, were found in the sample nitrogen isotope signatures between low, medium and high NA concentration sites. Ammonia from OSPM is suggested to be the main contributor to &delta;15N enrichment. <br /><br /> To determine the potential effects of site construction and OSPM within experimental test sites, carbon and sulphur stable isotopes of water, plankton, aquatic invertebrates and fish were analyzed. With the exception of <em>Chaoborus</em> and <em>Haliplus</em>, all carbon isotope signatures were not significantly different in constructed and reference sites. Also with the exception of <em>Haliplus</em>, sulphur isotope values for aquatic organisms from constructed and reference sites were significantly different. Aquatic organisms and water samples from constructed sites built in, or close, to the boundary of Kcw clays typically had &delta;34S < 0 ?. Coinciding with depleted &delta;34S signatures found in these aquatic systems were elevated sulphate concentrations. The waters at experimental test sites are in direct contact with the soil materials that facilitate the accumulation of sulphates as a result of the oxidation of substrate sulphide minerals. In general the results of the study suggest that aquatic food web structure and function do not change with the introduction of OSPM. Shifts in isotopic signatures suggestive of changes in food web structure, however, do occur when site construction exposes Kcw clays in the substrate.

Electroplating wastewater polishing in constructed wetland systems

Sochacki, Adam 10 September 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents various aspects of polishing the electroplating wastewater in constructed wetlands: analysis of the performance, study on the operation and configuration effects, effects of various carbon sources, analysis of the substrate (bed media), analysis of plants, and design issues. The goals of the experiment were to: (i) study the feasibility of polishing electroplating effluent, (ii) study the effect of operating schemes, plants, bed media and wastewater strength, (iii) to elucidate metal removal mechanisms in the CW microcosms. This study furnished new information and expanded the existing knowledge on industrial wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands. In fact, this is, to the best knowledge, the first publication studying the removal of metals and cyanide from electroplating wastewater in subsurface flow constructed wetlands. The aim of this study was to study the polishing of the electroplating wastewater pretreated using physical-chemical methods.

An investigation into the technical feasibility of using vegetated submerged bed constructed wetlands for the treatment of landfill leachate.

Olufsen, Jonathan Simon. January 2003 (has links)
Landfill leachate treatment in South Africa is still in its early stages; research has been conducted but primarily at pilot scale level. Current legislation in South Africa does not prohibit the discharge of landfill leachate into the sewer line, despite the high risk of methane explosions and corrosion of the sewer pipes. Thus, to date, the off site channelling of landfill leachate into the sewer lines for further dilution in municipal wastewater treatment plants is the most common practice. Due to the development of stricter environmental regulations, the design of sustainable landfills is leading to the 'treatment at source' concept. Increasing public pressure is also forcing new landfills to be situated in remote areas where there is no avaliable sewer line to discharge into and 'treatment at source' will be required. Due to these developments, coupled with the lack of full scale leachate treatment experience in South Africa, Durban Solid Waste (The waste service unit of the Durban metropolitan), in an attempt to develop the knowledge and practical experience required for leachate treatment, undertook a research project to investigate the use of nitrification/denitrification pilot scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR) to treat leachate from the Bisasar Road and Mariannhill Landfills. The successful completion of the trials proved that the full removal of nitrogen compounds could be easily achieved, under South African climatic conditions, in a single sludge SBR system. The system was found to be simple to operate and required low maintenance. However, the final effluent required further treatment before it could meet the general discharge standards into natural watercourses. Being South Africa, a 'low gross income' country, it became necessary to consider an appropriate, cost effective and technically feasible 'polishing' treatment system. It was decided that a pilot scale treatment trial, using vegetated submerged bed constructed wetlands, be undertaken to assess the applicability and feasibility of such a passive system for the 'polishing' of the effluent from the pilot scale sequencing batch reactors. The wetland systems were found to be affected by many interrelating climatic factors. The trials concluded that the wetlands could not achieve the required discharge standards, in terms of concentration. However, it also showed that the effluent organics posed no oxygen demand or toxic threat to a receiving environment. The trials showed the ability of the wetlands to behave as mass removal systems, which could achieve the required mass removal efficiency in terms of mass output per day. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

Reque, Patrícia Tambosi January 2015 (has links)
The liquid known as "leachate", produced by the disposal of waste in landfills and dumps, has a complex composition, characterized mainly by the presence of recalcitrant organic compounds. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the co-treatment of leachate with municipal wastewater in WWTP's, considering that these are effluents with different characteristics. This study evaluated the performance of a biological treatment process of wastewater consisting of 3 constructed wetlands systems (B1, B2 and B3), operated in parallel, treating a combination of domestic sewage (90%) + landfill leachate (10 %). Each system was comprised of four beds cultured with emerging macrophytes Luziola peruviana and Typha latifolia receiving affluent from different levels of pre-treatment, namely: B1 - anaerobic biological process (UASB) followed by aerobic biological process (CBR); B2 - anaerobic biological process (UASB). B3 received the untreated effluents. The content of organic matter and humic substances was analyzed by non-specific parameters, absorbance and fluorescence methods. Respirometry test were conducted to evaluate the content of slowly biodegradable COD. The average removal efficiencies of systems B1, B2 and B3 was of 97.4, 96.1 and 96.6% for BOD5, 66.9, 70.9 and 80.6% for CODT, 61,9, 69 and 62.8% for CODFil and 60.3, 72.8 and 72% of TOC, respectively. The evaluation of these parameters allowed to infer that the level of pre-treatment did not influenced the removal efficiency by wetland systems. Absorbance spectra were marked by greater absorbance in the region λ = <400 nm with progressive decrease up to 700 nm. Absorptivity coefficients indicated the predominance of domestic sewage, with little influence of SH's. In the fluorescence emission spectra, the appearance of bands in the 450 nm region indicated the presence of humic substances in the influent and effluent of the constructed wetland systems without a significant. This indicates that the substance in question went through the treatment without being degraded. The results obtained by synchronous fluorescence analysis showed a positive contribution of the B1 pretreatment (lowest concentration DQOFil) to the observed performance due to less presence of humic acids in the effluent. The authors did not have success during evaluation of the slowly biodegradable COD using the method proposed before.

Barszcz, Leonardo Beltrão January 2017 (has links)
Water is an essential for the survival of all lives. Studies of ecotechnologies to treat these effluents are necessary, especially in small communities, which end up generating diffuse pollution in water bodies, a reality of the great majority of Brazilian municipalities. In addition to other quality indicators, ecotoxicological tests are very important to monitor the quality of effluents and receptor bodies. The research objective was to evaluate the performance of wetland treatment in reducing the toxicity of domestic effluents. These project used constructed wetland with horizontal sub-surface flow cultivated with Eleocharis sp. (reed); and Typha sp. (typha). For this we used ecotoxicological tests with the microcrustacean Daphnia similis, with the dicotyledon Lactuca sativa (lettuce), the monocotyledon Sorghum vulgare (sorghum) and the aquatic macrophytes Lemna sp. (Duckweed) and Azolla sp. The domestic effluent was toxic to Daphnia similis with a mean EC50 of 1.3%. Macrophyte treatments significantly reduced effluent toxicity with EC50 averages 73% for reed treatment, EC50 53.17% for typha treatment, and EC50 78.25% for typha+ reed treatment. The control (without macrophytes) also significantly reduced toxicity, with a mean EC50 of 63.13%. In the phytotoxicity tests, lettuce and sorghum were not sensitive to the analyzed effluent, although they were for other types of effluents. The macrophyte Lemna sp. was also not sensitive to these studied effluent. However, it was possible to identify the eutrophic potential of the effluent with this species, since it was better developed in the raw effluent than in treated effluents. With the macrophyte Azolla sp. it was possible to verify that the raw effluent has a greater eutrophic potential when compared to the treatments with reed, typha and control, where we observed there was nitrogen and phosphorus removal. However, toxic effect for Azolla sp. Treated effluents.

This study objectified to evaluate dynamics phosphorus removal subsurface flow constructed wetlands systems as treatment secondary of sewer of the School of Agricultural Engineering of the State University of Campinas, Campinas (SP) and meets in it operates since September of 1998. The experiment was being in May of 2003 and during still in August of 2004, when had been carried through fifteen samplings, with measures hours with along eight at ten hours per day. They had been record the inflow and outflow the streambeds and simultaneously collected the samples for analysis of phosphorus, pH and electrical conductivity. The phosphorus rates were determined by method of AOAC Official Method 973.55. Phosphorus in water. This posttreatment design flexibility will be able to support small communities to have better environmental conditions even if they did not have a traditional wastewater plant previously. The option for a constructed-wetland wastewater treatment system takes in consideration another advantages, as such as the effect on the landscape, that may change the main focus of the treatment plant from the wastewater, decreasing the plant rejection. The vegetal specie may be used to attend commercial and ornamental interests, and they might improve the income of people and create new places of job in the neighborhood as well. Several species with ornamental ar economic'al value can be adapted to wastewater post-treatment systems like Zantedeschia aethiopica (calla IiIly), Cyperus papyrus (papyrus), Canna x generalis (canna lilly) and Cyperus isocladus (dwarf papyrus). As it occurs to vegetation, many different materiais can be used as substrates in constructed-wetlands systems like bamboo rings, material that was selected to be compared with a gravei bed constructed-wetland located at UNICAMP in Campinas, SP, Brazil, as an anaerobic baffled reactar post-treatment system. The ornamental species were well adapted to the wastewater post-treatment system. Bamboo rings can be used as' substrate, but when gravei is used the system efficiency reached better results. Statistical tests show that, for the conditions imposed to the tested system, the substrate material is more important than the vegetal species to obtain better treatment efficiency. Although the used hydraulic detention time was considerabíy smaller than desirable, the post-treatment system contributed with about 30% of the wastewater treatment system COD and suspended solids removal efficiency results. The best medium total phosphorous removal efficiency value was 27.7% for the gravei and papyrus constructed wetland. The efficiency of total and thermotolerant coliforms removal was about 1 log decay. The use of a vegetated system caused an intense loss of water by evapotranspiration, in average, 44.8%, during research period. This loss covers up the system real capacity in regard to the removal of several parameters, when only compared the affluent and effluent concentrations. The evaluation of the system's efficiency must be verified considering the load removal, instead "of the current methods of analysis based on concentration / Doutorado / Saneamento e Ambiente / Doutor em Engenharia Civil
