Emission of greenhouse gases from constructed wetlands : Nutrient status in relation to methane and nitrous oxide emission / Utsläpp av växthusgaser från anlagda våtmarker i relation till näringsstatusen

Lundström, Christian January 2022 (has links)
Agricultural land releases large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus to water bodies which causes eutrophication. Creating wetlands on agricultural land is one way to prevent this major issue. However, constructed wetlands are a large emission source of greenhouse gases. The aim of this study was to quantify the CH4 and N2O emissions in 21 constructed wetlands (CWs) around Mälardalen located in mid-Sweden and 19 CWs in the county of Halland along the south-west coast of Sweden and examine if there was any relation between the emissions and the nutrient status. Furthermore, the emission contributed by CH4 ebullition was evaluated. Synoptic water and gas sampling was done during early and late autumn. Floating chambers were deployed in six wetlands and measured CH4 ebullition over a 24-hour period. The diffusive CH4 emissions varied between 0.10–103 mg m-2 d-1 with a mean value of 13 mg m-2 d-1. The N2O emission varied between -0.086–7.8 mg m-2 d-1 with a mean of 1.4 mg m-2 d-1. Significant negative correlation between N2O emission and C:N ratio and a significant positive correlation between N2O emission and N:P ratio was found. No relation between the CH4 emission and total organic carbon (TOC) was found which other studies have been able to prove. Only a weak relation between the CH4 emission and the C:N ratio was found. The ebullition in the six wetlands varied between 0–62 mg m-2 d-1 and accounted for more than 85% of the total CH4 emission in most of the chambers. No significant difference in ebullition was found within the CWs but between the CWs there were found significant differences. The conclusion of this thesis is that CWs in agricultural areas represent a large source of CH4 and N2O emissions and that nutrient status has a major influence of the N2O emissions. Lastly, ebullition seems to be a major pathway for the CH4 emission.

Remote Sensing with Computational Intelligence Modelling for Monitoring the Ecosystem State and Hydraulic Pattern in a Constructed Wetland

Mohiuddin, Golam 01 January 2014 (has links)
Monitoring the heterogeneous aquatic environment such as the Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) located at the northeast of the Everglades is extremely important in understanding the land processes of the constructed wetland in its capacity to remove nutrient. Direct monitoring and measurements of ecosystem evolution and changing velocities at every single part of the STA are not always feasible. Integrated remote sensing, monitoring, and modeling technique can be a state-of-the-art tool to estimate the spatial and temporal distributions of flow velocity regimes and ecological functioning in such dynamic aquatic environments. In this presentation, comparison between four computational intelligence models including Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Genetic Programming (GP) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were organized to holistically assess the flow velocity and direction as well as ecosystem states within a vegetative wetland area. First the local sensor network was established using Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Utilizing the local sensor data along with the help of external driving forces parameters, trained models of ELM, GP and ANN were developed, calibrated, validated, and compared to select the best computational capacity of velocity prediction over time. Besides, seasonal images collected by French satellite Pleiades have been analyzed to address the seasonality effect of plant species evolution and biomass changes in the constructed wetland. The key finding of this research is to characterize the interactions between geophysical and geochemical processes in this wetland system based on ground-based monitoring sensors and satellite images to discover insight of hydraulic residence time, plant species variation, and water quality and improve the overall understanding of possible nutrient removal in this constructed wetland.

Nutrient And Pathogen Removal In A Subsurface Upflow Wetland System Using Green Sorption Media

Xuan, Zhemin 01 January 2009 (has links)
Due to environmental health and nutrient impact concerns, the conventional on-site sewage collection, treatment, and disposal systems are no longer able to meet the nutrient reduction requirements for wastewater effluent and may represent a large fraction of pollutant loads. The loads include not only nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), but also pathogens such as fecal coliform and E. coli which indicate the presence of other disease-causing bacteria flowing into aquatic system that adversely affect public health. A subsurface upflow wetland, which is an effective small-scale wastewater treatment system with low energy and maintenance requirements and operational costs, fits the current nutrient and pathogen removal situation having received wide attention throughout the world. Within this research study, a subsurface upflow wetland system (SUW), including four parallel SUW (three planted versus one unplanted), were constructed as a key component of the septic tank system receiving 454 liters per day (120 GPD) influent using the green sorption media along with selected plant species. It was proved effective in removing both nutrients and pathogens. During a one month test run, the planted wetlands achieved a removal efficiency of 84.2%, 97.3 %, 98.93 % and 99.92%, compared to the control wetland, 10.5%, 85.7 %, 99.74 % and 100.0 %, in total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), fecal coli and E.Coli, respectively. Denitrification was proved to be the dominant pathway for removing N as evidenced by the mass balance and real-time PCR analyses. A simplified compartmental dynamics simulation model of constructed subsurface upflow wetlands was also developed to provide a dependable reference and tool for design of constructed subsurface upflow wetland.

Resilience of Micropollutant and Biological Effect Removal in an Aerated Horizontal Flow Treatment Wetland

Sossalla, Nadine A., Nivala, Jaime, Escher, Beate I., Reemtsma, Thorsten, Schlichting, Rita, van Afferden, Manfred, Müller, Roland A. 19 April 2023 (has links)
The performance of an aerated horizontal subsurface flow treatment wetland was investigated before, during and after a simulated aeration failure. Conventional wastewater parameters (e.g., carbonaceous biological oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and Escherichia coli) as well as selected micropollutants (caffeine, ibuprofen, naproxen, benzotriazole, diclofenac, acesulfame, and carbamazepine) were investigated. Furthermore, the removal of biological effects was investigated using in vitro bioassays. The six bioassays selected covered environmentally relevant endpoints (indicative of activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor, AhR; binding to the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, PPARγ; activation of estrogen receptor alpha, ERα; activation of glucocorticoid receptor, GR; oxidative stress response, AREc32; combined algae test, CAT). During the aeration interruption phase, the water quality deteriorated to a degree comparable to that of a conventional (non-aerated) horizontal subsurface flow wetland. After the end of the aeration interruption, the analytical and biological parameters investigated recovered at different time periods until their initial treatment performance. Treatment efficacy for conventional parameters was recovered within a few days, but no complete recovery of treatment efficacy could be observed for bioassays AhR, AREc32 and CAT in the 21 days following re-start of the aeration system. Furthermore, the removal efficacy along the flow path for most of the chemicals and bioassays recovered as it was observed in the baseline phase. Only for the activation of AhR and AREc32 there was a shift of the internal treatment profile from 12.5% to 25% (AhR) and 50% (AREc32) of the fractional length.

Jaremalm, Maria January 2005 (has links)
<p>The euthropthication of the Baltic Sea is a threat that is beginning to be taken seriously by the governments concerned. In Sweden, regulations concerning the allowed nitrogen (N) concentration in the effluent water from wastewater treatment plants are being tightened up. The Rimbo wastewater treatment plant has been imposed to reduce the annual mean concentration of total N in the effluent water to levels below 15 mg l-1. A more and more common way to reduce the nitrogen level in wastewater is to let the water pass through a wetland. This study investigates the possibility to build this kind of wetland at the outlet of the Rimbo wastewater treatment plant.</p><p>A prestudy of the topography, soil characteristics and groundwater flow indicates that the land area in question is well suited for the construction of a wetland. A proposal for the design has been made by using a physically based computer model developed in the PRIMROSE project (PRocess based Integrated Management of constructed and Riverine wetlands for Optimal control of wastewater at catchment ScalE), which is financed by the EU. Analysis of the residence time distribution (RTD) is a tool for understanding wetland design characteristics and can be used for wetland engineering such as optimizing design for best possibleefficiency in nitrogen removal. In order to characterize the performance of a wetland, it is useful to translate the RTD to a key figure representing the treatment efficiency. In this work, two types of such key figures have been used. Key figure 1 gives the hydraulic efficiency and Key figure 2 gives an estimation of the nitrogen retention by an integration of hydraulic characteristics and the chemical transformation of nitrogen.</p><p>The results of this study show that constructing a wetland in Rimbo probably would be an efficient way to reduce the nitrogen level at the effluent of the wastewater plant below the limits of the regulations. In addition, a wetland would form a nice place of recreation for the people in Rimbo and also make a good habitat for birds.</p> / <p>Övergödningen i Östersjön är ett problem som uppmärksammas alltmer. Förslag till utformning har tagits fram med hjälp av en fysikaliskt baserad modell över vattenströmning, utvecklad inom det EU-finansierade projektet PRIMROSE (PRocess based Integrated Management of constructed and Riverine wetlands for Optimal control of wastewater at catchment ScalE).

Assessment of the Efficacy of a Constructed Wetland to Reduce or Remove Wastewater Effluent Estrogenicity and Toxicity Using Biomarkers in Male Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque, 1820)

Hemming, Jon M. 12 1900 (has links)
Vitellogenin in Pimephales promelas was used to assess estrogenicity of a local municipal effluent. Vitellogenin induction in male P. promelas increased in frequency and magnitude with increased exposure duration and was greater ("=0.05) than controls after 2 and 3 weeks of exposure. The level of vitellogenesis induced by effluent exposure was high compared to similar studies. A spring season evaluation followed. Biomarkers in P. promelas were used to assess the efficacy of a treatment wetland to remove toxicity and estrogenicity in final treated wastewater effluent. Comparisons were made with an effluent dominated stream and laboratory controls. Vitellogenin, GSIs (gonado-somatic indices), HSIs (hepato-somatic indices) and secondary sexual characteristics were biomarkers used in P. promelas models to assess aqueous estrogenicity. Biological indicators used to assess general fish health included hematocrit and condition factors. The estrogenic nature of the effluent was screened, concurrent with fish exposure, with GC/MS analysis for target estrogenic compounds including: 17-b estradiol, estrone, ethynylestradiol, Bisphenol A, nonylphenolic compounds, phthalates, and DDT. Plasma vitellogenin measured in P. promelas was significantly elevated (p < 0.0001) at the inflow site of the wetland and stream sites. GSIs for these exposures were less (a=0.001) at the wetland inflow site. At wetland sites closest to the inflow, secondary sexual charateristics, tubercle numbers and fat pad thickness, were less (a=0.0001). Hematocrit and condition factors were less (a=0.001) at sites closer to the wetland inflow. Seasonal variation was examined by repeating the effluent characterization in summer. Additionally, summer testing included exposure to an effluent dilution series. Fish condition heavily influenced interpretation of the results. Pre-acclimation exposure to spawning stresses may have altered many of the biological markers measured. Results are discussed relative to fish health and pre-exposure environment. Toxicity assessed with P. promelas biomarkers was compared with Ceriodaphnia dubia and Vibrio fischeri toxicty tests on this effluent. Biomarkers of fish health were somewhat less sensitive than C. dubia test endpoints, but more sensitive than V. fisheri.

Avaliação de um sistema descentralizado de tratamento de esgotos domésticos em escala real composto por tanque séptico e wetland construída híbrida / Evaluation of a decentralized system of domestic sewage treatment in real scale composed of septic tank and hybrid constructed wetland

Alexandre Antonio Jacob de Mendonça 06 April 2016 (has links)
The demographic concentration and collective systems of sanitation inside the urban perimeter of most Brazilian municipalities, hampers the feasibility of providing sewage treatment services to domestic dwellings and housing isolated nuclei located in peri-urban and rural areas, intensifying the damage caused by pollution of human origin to the environment and to the preservation of public health. For help in solving this problem, the present study had the purpose to evaluate a hybrid constructed wetland full-scale, composed of a unit with continuous vertical subsurface flow followed by a continuous horizontal subsurface flow unit, grown with Vetiver grass, for the treatment of effluent from septic tank. This experimental search setting a low-cost and simplified solution for decentralized treatment of household sewage. The experimental sewage treatment station, integral and one of the products of the Rede Nacional de Tratamento de Esgotos Descentralizados RENTED, was built on the Centro Tecnológico de Hidráulica CTH / Escola Politécnica EPUSP, campus Butantã of USP, in São Paulo. The raw sewage was coming from the residential condominium of the USP and the central restaurant of the University City. The average and maximum flows of raw sewage, respectively, of 640L.d-1 and 1600L.d-1, have been applied to the septic tank input to 5,000L and drained by gravity from the edge of the hybrid constructed wetland with TDH total of 2.8d and 1.1d, respectively, under application of the average and maximum flow rates. Monitoring the experiment in the field, including the early period, lasted 6 months. They were evaluated the physico-chemical and microbiological parameters of raw sewage and effluent from septic tank and the chambers of hybrid constructed wetland during 97 consecutive days. The results indicated that both the young seedlings as the adults of Vetiver grass have adapted well to environmental conditions. The average removal efficiencies in the final treated effluent as to carbonaceous organic matter were 96 per cent for BOD5,20 and 90 per cent for COD, 40 per cent for Ntotal, 23 per cent for N-ammoniacal, 60 per cent for P-total, 52 per cent for P-PO4, 74 per cent for SST, 96 per cent for SSV, 75 per cent for settleable solids, 44 per cent for SDV, 88 per cent for total sulfide, and 97 per cent for oils and greases totals, ranging from 73 per cent to 100 per cent . About 80 per cent of the organic fraction of nitrogen matter present in the raw sewage has been removed. The thermotolerants coliforms removal was, in average, of 2 and 3 log units, and Escherichia Coli, average of 1 and 3 log units, respectively, under application of the maximum and average flow rates, Giardia sp, average of 99.995 per cent , Cryptosporidium sp, average of 98.7 per cent , Enterovirus, average of 99.6 per cent , and Ascaris sp, average of 0.10 eggs/L. Removal of sulfides allowed the generation of treated effluent without unpleasant odors. The decrease in flow rate applied and the elevation of TDH influenced positively on system performance with respect to removals of chemical-physical and microbiological parameters. Based on this study, it became apparent the association benefit constructed wetlands with vertical and horizontal flow in the treatment of wastewater of septic tank. The Vetiver grass has good potential for use in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. The experimental system of treatment presented operational flexibility while maintaining good performance even in periods of overload. The quality of the final treated effluent obtained in this study 10 meets the requirements and emission standards of liquid effluents in water bodies and in public sanitation systems defined in federal environmental legislation and the State of São Paulo in Brazil. Hybrid constructed wetlands technology associated with the septic tank effluent treatment showed good potential for decentralized domestic wastewater treatment, including in regions with low availability of free area.

Dynamique des flux de micropolluants et mécanismes de dépollution des rejets pluviaux urbains stricts à travers une technique alternative : approche multi-échelles par des méthodes expérimentale et numérique / Dynamic of micropollutants fluxes and treatment mechanisms in an urban stormwater pond-filter constructed wetland

Walaszek, Milena 19 January 2018 (has links)
Stormwaters are identified as a major source of pollution for waterbodies. Particularly, metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in stormwater are known as the most toxic compounds for the fauna and flora. To limit the impact of these micropollutants on hydrosystems quality, stormwater constructed wetlands (SCW) have been built worldwide. This study aims i) to assess the efficiency of a 5-years-old SCW that combined a sedimentation pond followed by a vertical flow sand filter in urban area (Strasbourg 67, France), ii) to determine micropollutants storage in water and soils during dry period, (iii) to investigate the seasonality impacts on SCW performances, (iv) to evaluate copper, lead and zinc sorption behavior on the filter sand and (v) to model micropollutants and rain water fluxes from the catchment to the filter output. 3 years of on-site monitoring and 13 rain event sampling campaigns have shown that SCW hydraulic and treatment performances are constant over the year. Rain water is characterized by high loads of zinc and its micropollutants loads depend on the rain event depth. Then, chemical analyses, sequential extractions and batch experiments performed on the SCW substrate highlight that metals mobility in the filter is affected by pH and metal concentration. A model based on the Richard’s equation has been developed and predicts with success the 1-D vertical flow in the filter.

Jasper, Samir Paulo, 1982- January 2006 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The great Brazilian pig breeding development was done due to the intensification of productive systems with density increase, space restriction and movement, and also genetic and nutritional improvement. Animals with high weigh gain rate and feed efficiency are restricted and feed with high density nutrient diet. However, a restricted production system has brought severe operational problems such as dregs concentration and an increase necessity to use water to keep the installations clean. In order to solve this problem, is important to use simple techniques and low cost installations, for example the innovator system called combine wetlands, to treat the pig breeding waste water. On the other side, techniques used for a long time such as facultative pond was pioneer in Brazil. The components and volume of waste dreg water from pig breeding have a direct relation with the adopted dreg management system. The adoption of a rational dreg management system avoids water waste allowing an environmental fair production with low production cost. This work developed a detailed economical analysis between the constructed wetland system, model combine and stabilization pond, type facultative, in function of six pig end raising grange size and two dreg management systems (alternative x conventional). The results showed the constructed wetlands working with dried dejects management system the hypothesis with best economic indexes, such as a lower implementation cost, annual cost, cost per animal and per kilogram of produced meat and also required the smaller recommended area. At pig end raising granges with wet dejects management, lower implementation cost, annual cost, cost per animal and per kilogram of produced meat was found on stabilization ponds type facultative, however this technique requires big areas to be used. / Orientador: Marco Antônio Martin Biaggioni / Coorientador: Ana Beatriz Rocha de Castro Lopes / Banca: Maura Tsutsui Seiko Esperancini / Banca: Maria Elizabeth A. de Oliveira / Mestre
