No. of bitstreams: 1 Eneida Regina Fabian Holzmann.pdf: 2741374 bytes, checksum: ae0f871c804d775d6600634740f46512 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-10-01 / This research investigates the process of construction of the situation of domestic violence, between men and women, in the marital relationship. It is guided by the National Policy to Combat Violence Against Women, directed by Law nº 11.340/6, Law Maria da Penha, which required the creation of a network of diversified and interdisciplinary services in the areas of security and justice, social services and health, supported by the Unified Health System (SUS). Based on the systemic vision, it has as general objective to investigate in what way the family and intergenerational perspective contributes to the construction of knowledge with women in situation of domestic violence and with their (ex-)partners. It discusses the importance of the development, by public services, of forms of intervention that enable users to be accommodated by other men and women with similar experiences. It conducts a qualitative study and content analysis from the co-constructed narratives with eight heterosexual ex-couples, in a process of five individual and group interviews with each participant, including the co-construction of the ex-couple’s double genogram. It presents the perception of women and their (ex-)partners about the violence experienced in the marital relationship, the perception about the family/ intergenerational experiences involved in the construction of domestic violence, as well as the driving forces for the rescue of the identity and for exiting this situation, related to the family life cycle and the marriage life cycle. In the systemic perspective, the analysis focuses on the communication process of the ex-couple; the repetition of familiar patterns of communication, affectivity and familiar functioning regarding the construction of boundaries between the subsystems of the family; the presence of marital and family myths. The experience of psychological violence in the relation of the woman interviewed with her mother and the affective distancing between the man interviewed and his father are present, in a significant way, in the narratives co-constructed in the study. This experience of chronic psychological violence with the mother, for the women, had its continuity in the marital relationship, in which they experienced the same feelings of helplessness, of worthlessness, of abandonment. Men, in turn, also in a significant group, reported experiences of affective distancing and/or abandonment by the father, revealing a feeling of helplessness. In the construction of knowledge from the family and intergenerational perspective, through the sharing of individual experiences in the interviews in separate groups, women and men expressed that the rapprochement with family history contributed to self-knowledge, to the reaffirmation of their identity, their own value and the value of the family, in addition to enabling the opening for new meanings for the experience of marital violence. As a methodological result, the research brings the proposal for the rescue of history and family forces for women and men in situation of domestic violence, using a new instrument, the double genogram of the ex-couple, as a possible form of intervention for the public network / Esta pesquisa investiga o processo de construção da situação de violência doméstica, entre homens e mulheres, na relação conjugal.

The circus and its construction of meaning: addressing the circus artist perspective on his own daily life

Suara Bastos 10 June 2013 (has links)
The interest for this study arose from my personal experience once I worked with and accompanied three different circuses in Mexico for four years. Considering the understanding of the human being in its uniqueness regarding the cultural context in which we are inserted, this research object is the study of everyday life in the circus and its constructions of meaning, aiming at addressing the circus artists own perspective. Based on what was reported by the participants, three things were investigated a) descriptive elements of their everyday life, b) the moments of tension in the self-other relations and c) dialogical positions that emerged in the process of meaning construction. The research is qualitative, and the theoretical and methodological framework was the semiotic-cultural constructivism, which, among other propositions, aims at searching the genesis of the research process, the non-separation of theory and method, and regards the researcher as an important part of the research process. Interviews were conducted with semi-structured questions. After each one of them, the participants were asked to take photos of anything in the circus with important meaning to them. The use of photographic resource served as a supplementary language to the interviews, and its use is justified when we intend to understand the meanings attributed to the images through the eyes of the author of the picture. The study included six circus adult performers, from which two were female and four male. I observed enchantment among the participants in relation to the circus and its itinerant lifestyle. In this common field of meanings, members share aspects related to family as well as carry out professional, social and interpersonal relationships. In the narratives, concerns related to the future of the circus emerged due to the difficulties it currently faces mainly due to the removal of animals from the arena, which caused a significant drop in ticket sales; a fact which indicates that at this time the circus is experiencing a period of cultural changes, since its presentations have always been related to the presentation of animals. Some participants share the view that there is estrangement from the surrounding sedentary society regarding the circus business and those who dedicate their lives to it. The circus is open to the public and people enter its premises without being hindered by this perspective, emphasizing the tenuous relationship between the public and private sectors in this universe. All participants validated my position as a circus artist and were very generous in sharing their life stories with me possibly because they were able to relate to me for regarding me as someone who could understand them, due to my past circus experience, which allows me to know the characteristics and peculiarities of everyday life in circus. This research points out the development of new project in psychology concerning the circus, such as, for example, those related to the effectiveness of the method in which circus children are educated, and regarding a possible reflection psychologically oriented that accounts for the conflict and psychological distress in this and other mobile populations. The circus, in contrast, opens up possibilities for further research in the area relating to cultural issues in order to build knowledge and understand people\'s cultural-semiotic universes and different social groups

The management of renewable energy technologies implementations within a contracting organisation's processes

Williams, Tristan January 2013 (has links)
The construction industry is facing ever more challenging targets to reduce the environmental impact of new-build and refurbishment projects. The construction industry has failed to adopt renewable energy technologies (RETs) into mainstream construction projects; however, this aspect of the construction challenge needs addressing by large contractors. This thesis has established that there is a need to educate contractor personnel in the application and integration of RETs into construction projects to ensure that the construction industry can preserve its legacy for future generations. In order to improve the construction industry s use of renewable energy in building projects, it was necessary to reassess how the industry viewed energy. Contracting organisations have a diverse workforce, a fact established through a company-based desk study, workshops, interviews and surveys; this guided the direction of the project to satisfy the aims and objectives. The initial research findings enabled development of a strategy to improve RET knowledge within a UK contracting organisation. This research has developed trialled and tested a training programme aimed at educating construction professionals on the application of RETs that are relevant to new-build construction projects, and at improving knowledge sharing within a contracting organisation. Training material has been developed that includes six RET handbooks, a sustainability workshop incorporating RETs, an e-learning suite of online modules designed to suit a range of construction disciplines from designers to site-based staff. In addition, the research improved business practice through supporting knowledge share across all business units in addition to identifying the benefits of post-occupancy evaluation. The research has impacted the sponsoring organisation on several business elements including creation of a new business unit to assess completed projects in order to inform design and construction on future projects leading towards improved knowledge management on RETs. The e-learning component uses a combination of graphical imagery, audio voice-overs, knowledge-checks and assessment gathered from active construction projects to enable employees to engage in knowledge and experience sharing on a project-by-project basis, and organisational learning through case studies and post-occupancy evaluation of completed projects. Feedback received from the pilot study of the training materials has been encouraging and positive. While further research is required to measure the long-term effect of the initiative on the workforce population, a six month review suggested that a refresher course is required bi-annually to ensure the workforce score consistent results in the assessment and to update the training with new project experience to share within the organisation. The wider impact on the industry is to showcase the potential learning benefits of post-occupancy evaluation (POE) to contractors and the industry as a whole. The research has highlighted typical industry practice within a contracting organisations regarding knowledge sharing within the company and has demonstrated the improvement on employee knowledge after introduction of a training initiative utilising POE (typically a consultant tool) during the construction phase to prevent re-inventing the wheel . Through regularly and collectively sharing information and project experience, it is envisaged that the full range of contractor disciplines will have increased interaction to ensure all perspectives are accommodated during the design, construction and facility management phases of a building s life cycle.

Promoting Mathematical Understanding through Open-Ended Tasks; Experiences of an Eighth-Grade Gifted Geometry Class

Taylor, Carol H. 21 May 2008 (has links)
Promoting Mathematical Understanding Through Open-Ended Tasks; Experiences of an Eighth-Grade Gifted Geometry Class by Carol H. Taylor Gifted students of mathematics served through acceleration often lack the opportunities to engage in challenging, complex investigations involving higher-level thinking. This purpose of this study was to examine the ways mathematically gifted students think about and do mathematics creatively as indicators of deep understanding through collaborative work on four open-ended tasks with high-level cognitive demand. The study focused on the mathematical thinking involved in students’ construction of mathematical understanding through the social interaction of group problem solving. This case study used ethnographic methodology within a social constructivist frame with gifted education and sociocultural contextual influences. Participants were 15 gifted students in an 8th-grade gifted geometry class. Data collection included field notes, student artifacts, student journal entries, audio recordings, and reflections. Transcribed audio recordings were segmented (Tesch, 1990) into phases of interaction, coded by function, then coded by levels of exhibited mathematical thinking from observable cognitive actions (Dreyfus, Hershkowitz, & Schwarz, 2001; Williams, 2000; Wood, Williams, & McNeal, 2006), and analyzed for maintenance or decline of high-level cognitive demand (Stein, Smith, Henningsen, & Silver, 2000). Interpretive data analysis was connected to data analysis of transcribed recordings. Results indicated social interaction among students enabled them to talk through the mathematics to understand mathematical concepts and relationships, to construct more complex meaning, and exhibit mathematical creativity, inventiveness, flexibility, and originality. Students consistently exhibited these characteristics indicating mathematical thinking at the levels of building-with analyzing, building-with synthetic-analyzing, building-with evaluative-analyzing, constructing synthesizing, and occasionally constructing evaluating (Dreyfus et al., 2001; Williams, 2000; Wood et al., 2006). The results of the study support the claim of a relationship between mathematical giftedness and the ability to abstract and generalize (Sriraman, 2003), provide evidence that given the opportunity, students can construct deep mathematical understanding, and indicate the importance of social interaction in the construction of knowledge. This study adds to the body of knowledge needed in research on gifted education, problem solving, small-group interaction, mathematical thinking, and mathematical understanding, through empirically assessed classroom practice (Friedman-Nima et al., 2005; Good, Mulryan, & McCaslin, 1992; Hiebert & Carpenter, 1992; Lester & Kehle, 2003; Phillipson, 2007; Wood, Williams, & McNeal, 2006).

Whose pride?: an institutional ethnography on participating in Toronto’s Pride Parade

Hoxsey, Dann 18 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis investigates how an institutional coordination of civic policies and organizational processes within Pride Toronto were brought to bear on the activist group Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) in their attempts to participate in the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Toronto Pride Parades. Utilizing an institutional ethnography (IE), I explore this issue in two key ways. First, by mapping a work-text-work sequence of QuAIA’s experience in applying to march in the 2010 Parade, I demonstrate how the application process was subject to social relations that extended beyond Toronto Pride. Second, through the elaboration of processing interchanges, I demonstrate how the experiences of QuAIA were hooked into a series of translocal relations via Pride Toronto’s funding relationship to the City of Toronto. These translocal relations working through the City of Toronto were themselves varied, from pro-Zionist pressure on individual City councilors, to an alignment with anti-tax and arguably homophobic interests on council. / Graduate

Constructing Mathematical Knowledge Using Multiple Representations: A Case Study of a Grade One Teacher

Jao, Limin 14 December 2009 (has links)
This study examined how an elementary teacher fostered student mathematical understanding and the strategies that she used to help students learn mathematical concepts. A case study of a Grade 1 teacher is described based on qualitative data from interviews and classroom observation sessions using a peer coaching model. The evidence from the study suggests that this teacher benefited from professional development opportunities to gain deeper insights regarding her teaching practices. There were five major findings: (1) enthusiasm for improving her practices was necessary to successfully meet her goals; (2) this teacher’s role in the classroom was important to facilitate the construction of knowledge; (3) the classroom was an environment where her students felt safe; (4) a variety of tasks and strategies that students of varied abilities, interests and aptitudes can enjoy were used; and (5) multiple representations (including the use of manipulatives) were used to scaffold the construction of knowledge.
