The Algorithm Made Me a Le$bean : Algoritmic "Folk Theory" Within the Lesbian Community on TikTokReje Franzén, Fanny January 2022 (has links)
Based on the news coverage published 2020 that exposed practices of censorship and shadowbanning of LGBTQ+ creators implemented with the help of the TikTok algorithm the aim of this thesis was established (Ryan et al., 2020). The thesis analyze communication published on the Reddit forum r/actuallesbians regarding the lesbian community on TikTok to examine if there had been algorithmic “folk theories” created regarding the platform’s algorithm. This was done by performing a qualitative thematic content analysis of posts dedicated to the subject of TikTok’s algorithm and lesbian TikTok creators sourced from the Reddit forum. The data sample collected was 4 Reddit posts and their 116 subsequential comments published by 68 users. This analysis found that there were two main themes present in the user’s algorithmic theories; algorithm as it is and algorithm as you make it. Depending on the individuals’ beliefs regarding the algorithm it also affected their belief on the platforms ability to host a diverse lesbian community. The study found that the community had created opposing “folk theories” regarding the function of the algorithm and to what extent the community could create narratives representing the whole community. Depending on the “folk theory” the users were analyzed to fit into, they exhibited different behaviors and beliefs on how community could be created on the platform.

Geo-Social Networks (GSNs) are a type of collaborative systems with geolocated information as their shared content. This specific content allows the linking between real and virtual worlds. Nowadays, the popularization of GSNs is something real in world. One reason of that phenomenon is because GSNs support their users during the making decision process about places. Moreover, GSNs are important tools for urban monitoring, based on flow of users’ participation. The present thesis detects as problem the way how GSNs treat their collaborators homogeneously. As consequence, GSNs do not use all collaboratives potentialities of their users and are not efficient during making decision process. We reinforce the necessity of definition of parameters about diversity of a specific user: the content creator. He presents a piece of users who shared geolocated information in GSNs. Previous studies did investigate aspects about creators’ diversity on GSNs over the world. But, none of them analyzed this diversity among content creators of GSNs in Brazilian cities. The present thesis does a large-scale mapping about geolocated content creators in cities of Brazil. This mapping is divided in three approaches. The former is the investigation of diversity, based on collaborators’ experiences about places. The next one is about diversity of content creators, according to their collaborative behaviors. The last approach is about diversity analysis, face to spatial patterns among GSNs participants. The results find out the diversity among geolocated content creators in Brazilian cities. Moreover, the results can be applied in GSNs designing and mechanism of places’ recommendation.

Exploring the introduction of Generative Artificial Intelligence at work: A Professional Role Identity perspectiveDubois du Bellay, Baptiste, Canariov, Petru January 2023 (has links)
This research thesis aims to explore the interplay between the recent introduction of generative artificial intelligence at work and professional role identity. As the public introduction of generative artificial intelligence shook up people’s lives in November 2022, we have reasons to think that an exploration of workers’ professional role identity regardinggenerative artificial intelligence is relevant. Due to the recent studies related to the massive introduction of artificial intelligence in the content creators’ field, we chose to explore how their role and their identity are evolving. Organizations face challenges in managing artificial intelligence systems and their impact on professional role identity, which, however, has received limited scholarly attention and is not well-understood yet. While prior research has studied various aspects related to artificial intelligence and has suggested that artificial intelligence can enhance productivity, efficiency, and prosperity, it has to a large extent neglected the influence of artificial intelligence on professional role identities. Therefore, this research aims to contribute to artificial intelligence literature by providing empirical insights into the evolution of work and identity. To address the abovementioned gap, we build on previous research and conduct a qualitative study. We gathered important insights through interviews with several content creators, including photographers and designers from different countries, to discuss their experiences and elaborate a more comprehensive approach to the potential consequences of the introduction of generative artificial intelligence at work. Taking inspiration from a phenomenological approach, clarifications have been brought forward on the reasons exposed by content creators to introduce generative artificial intelligence in their work process and the consequences of such a choice. A broader perspective has been borrowed in order to question the legitimacy of clients and peers regarding the integration of generative artificial intelligence at work. More than adding a layer on the benefits of the introduction of generative artificial intelligence at work, our thesis sheds light on what we call “a dual motion” for workers’role identity, highlighting both interactions between generative artificial intelligence at work and professional role identity, challenging and enhancing each other. Additionally, this research explores manners content creators can enrich their work with generative artificial intelligence. This thesis gains perspective on this subject and aims to expose practical implications for workers to inform and broaden people’s minds about generative artificial intelligence.

Digitala dialoger : En analys av affordansers påverkan på antifeministisk kommunikation på plattformarna X, Instagram och Rumble / Digital Dialogues : An Analysis of the Impact of Affordances on Anti-feminist Communication on the Platforms X, Instagram, and RumbleEkstedt, Hanna, Enlund, Hanna January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the affordances provided by the social media platforms X, Instagram, and Rumble and how these affordances are utilized by three different anti-feminist creators. We applied Treem and Leonardi's theory of affordances, where an observation chart was divided into visibility, persistence, editability, and association. The results of the study indicate that users interact across multiple platforms and often use links to connect their accounts. This allows them to disseminate and reinforce anti-feminist perspectives across different channels. Affordances are utilized both by users and the audience to express misogyny, for example, in a live chat during livestreams or posts on X. This can create an 'us' versus 'them' mentality, which is exploited by anti-feminists to attract an audience. The design of social media platforms also does not promote critical thinking among the audience, facilitating anti-feminists in creating and maintaining a loyal audience that is not given the opportunity to question the messages conveyed by the anti-feminists.

Comunidades virtuales de tecnología en YouTube Perú, características y credibilidad durante la pandemia Covid-19 / Virtual technology communities on YouTube Peru, characteristics and credibility during the Covid-19 pandemicSanchez Oviedo, Mathew Marcial 03 December 2020 (has links)
Technology content creators are users who share content with a certain degree of production and in many cases have experience in the subject they touch on in their videos, be it hardware, software or services. Potential of Blockchain and Cryptoeconomics in Developing Independent and Constructive Journalism : Case Study on Steem Blockchain and Steemit NetworkAlkhalaf, Khalaf January 2020 (has links)
Advanced Technology drives the increasing anti-censorship, decentralised social media networks, and publishing platforms that are based on blockchain, where no single party can control these platforms, which results in safeguarding information circulation, freedom to publish, and independence of journalism. Furthermore, cryptoeconomics associated with blockchain creates an easy economic model to find sustainable financing for independent journalism by Initial Coin Offering. Meanwhile, adopting a reward system by these publishing platforms has generated sustainable income sources for content creators, allowing them to be independent and motivated to create high-quality constructive content, which contributes to developing communities through disbursing knowledge in forms of constructive journalism. This study presents the potential of blockchain and cryptoeconomics in developing independent and constructive journalism, especially in developing countries. Through analysing the structure of Steem Blockchain, and empirical analysis of journalistic content on Steemit network in terms of the amount of payout that content creators and curators receive, based on the system of reward according to the content value that is determined by community member voting. Besides selected sample interviews with journalists, writers, and publishers in the Arab World which is undergoing turmoil and transition and needs constructive journalism, asking for their opinions about the potential that blockchain and cryptoeconomics have to support independent and constructive journalism. The results of the study demonstrated that journalistic posts classified under constructive journalism could achieve a high payout according to the reward system based on community voting for the content value. Meanwhile, journalists and writers have expected that this new economic model can enhance the financial independence of journalists and develop independent and constructive journalism in developing countries.
