From astrophysics to astrobiology : significance of laboratory organic residues from photo-irradiation of cosmic ice analogs / De l'astrophysique à l'astrobiologie : l'intérêt des résidus organiques de laboratoire issus de la photo-irradiation d'analogues de glaces cosmiquesModica, Paola 26 November 2014 (has links)
Laboratory experiments have shown that ultraviolet photo-irradiation of astrophysical ice analogs and their following warm-up until room temperature lead to the formation of refractory organic residues. These residues consist of rich mixtures of organic compounds, including amino acids, which have a potential importance for prebiotic chemistry. They are considered as analogs of the organic refractory materials that are thought to be synthesized on dust grains in molecular clouds and/or in protoplanetary disks, as a product of ices evolution, and that could be later accreted into comets and asteroids and eventually be delivered to the early Earth. Hence, the study of these analogs, produced under astrophysically relevant conditions, represents a valid tool to investigate the processes at work for the origin of complex organic molecules in the Solar System and in particular the possible introduction of enantiomeric excesses in chiral molecules. This PhD work is devoted to the study of these laboratory organic residues, their characterization and the astrophysical applications of the results. We used different analytical techniques such as gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC MS, classical and multidimensional), Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT ICR MS), and infrared spectroscopy. We measured the enantiomeric excesses induced in five chiral amino acids by UV circularly polarized light (UV CPL) irradiation of our analogs and insert our result in a coherent astrophysical scenario for the origin of the enantiomeric excesses observed in meteoritic amino acids. We studied the amino acid content of the Paris meteorite and evidence some similarities with the distribution of the amino acids in our organic residues. We also produced more realistic analogs of interstellar grains, including a silicate surface, to test the potential effect of such a surface on the formation and nature of organic residues. Finally, we discuss the significance of these results in the astrophysical context and the possible relationship between astrochemistry and prebiotic chemistry.

Vliv radiace na vlastnosti polovodičových součástek / The effects of ionizing radiation on semiconductor devices propertiesYermalayeva, Darya January 2018 (has links)
This master’s thesis deals with the problematics of influence of ionizing radiation on semiconductor devices and their properties. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the different types of radiation that can occur in the areas of application of these components. In the second part, the degradation processes are explored, with emphasis on the influence caused by the radiation dose. Also, the displacement damage and SEE effects are described, but just slightly, because they are not part of this work. The third part describes the device design process and harmful effects, that have to be considered during the design phase. In the forth and the fifth parts of this work were done modeling of radiation effects (influence of dose rate, Single-Event Upset and Total Ionizing Dose) in PSpice program and was carried out the possibility of designing a simple dosimeter with silicon diode. In conclusion, the results of the thesis are summarized and evaluated.

Measuring the vertical muon intensity with the ALTO prototype at Linnaeus University / Mätning av den vertikala muon-intensiteten med ALTO-prototypen på LinnéuniversitetetNorén, Magnus January 2021 (has links)
ALTO is a project, currently in the research and development phase, with the goal of constructing a Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray observatory in the southern hemisphere. It will detect the particle content reaching the ground from the interactions of either VHE gamma rays or cosmic rays in the atmosphere known as extensive air showers. In this thesis, we use an ALTO prototype built at Linneaus University to estimate the vertical muon intensity in Växjö. The atmospheric muons we detect at ground level come from hadronic showers caused by a cosmic ray entering the atmosphere. Such showers are considered background noise in the context of VHE gamma-ray astronomy, and the presence of muons is an important indicator of the nature of the shower, and thus of the primary particle. The measurement is done by isolating events that produce signals in two small scintillation detectors that are part of the ALTO prototype, and are placed almost directly above each other. This gives us a data set that we assume represents muons travelling along a narrow set of trajectories, and by measuring the rate of such events, we estimate the muon intensity. We estimate the corresponding momentum threshold using two different methods; Monte Carlo simulation and calculation of the mean energy loss. The vertical muon intensity found through this method is about 21% higher than commonly accepted values. We discuss some possible explanations for this discrepancy, and conclude that the most likely explanation is that the isolated data set contains a significant number of “false positives”, i.e., events that do not represent a single muon following the desired trajectory.

Constraints on the High-Energy Gamma-Ray Spectrum of Nearby Star-Forming GalaxiesSvenborn, Oskar January 2021 (has links)
The nature of high-energy gamma-ray emission from Star-Forming Galaxies is of utmost importance for understanding both the origin of Cosmic Rays and the high-energy processes that shape galaxy formation. Observations from the gamma-ray telescope Fermi-LAT have detected gamma-ray emission from a handful of nearby Star-Forming Galaxies. Interestingly, observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud show evidence for a spectral cutoff at energies of approximately 10 GeV. This has raised the question as to whether some Star-Forming Galaxies are unable to contain their Cosmic Ray population. Using the Fermitools to analyse the gamma-ray emission from a selection of bright nearby Star-Forming Galaxies, this study intends to explore the possibility of finding further evidence for exponential cutoffs in the gamma-ray spectrum of Star-Forming Galaxies. The shape of the combined spectrum of the 49 galaxies in the sample was determined using least-square fitting of a single power law, a broken power law and a power law with an exponential cutoff. No evidence of an exponentialcutoff was found and the shape of the spectrum was best described by a broken power law with indices Γ1 = -2.48 ± 0.05 and Γ2 = -0.88 ± 0.09. This is in poor agreement with previous observations, which favour a simple power law with an index in the range -2.2 to -2.4. Interestingly, the single power law, while disfavoured over the broken power law at ~7σ, was best fit with the index Γ = -2.35 ± 0.06, which is surprisingly well in agreement with previous observations. The discrepancy between the results presented here and those found in the literature is interpreted as due to insufficient treatment of background fluctuations and the possible existence of bright sources at the unverified blank sky locations used for modelling the background.

ow over a
permeable stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium with thermal radiation and
heat source/sink is investigated numerically. The original partial di erential equations
are converted into ordinary di erential equations by using similarity transformation. The
governing non-linear partial di erential equations of Momentum, Energy, and Concentration
are considered in this study. The e ects of various physical parameters on the
velocity, temperature, and species concentration have been discussed. The parameters
include the Prandtl number (Pr), Magnetic parameter (M), the Schmidt number (Sc),
Unsteady parameter (A), buoyancy forces ratio parameter (N), Chemical reaction (K),
Radiation parameter (Nr), Eckert number (Ec), local heat source/sink parameter (Q)
and buoyancy parameter due to temperature ( ). The coe cient of Skin friction and
Heat transfer are investigated. The coupled non-linear partial di erential equations governing
the
ow eld have been solved numerically using the Spectral Relaxation Method
(SRM). The results that are obtained in this study are then presented in tabular forms
and on graphs and the observations are discussed. / NRF

Studium interakcí částic kosmického záření při extrémně vysokých energiích / Study of Interactions of Cosmic Rays at Ultra-high EnergiesNečesal, Petr January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to study of interactions of utra-high energy cosmic rays using measured data from the Pierre Auger Observatory, automatic alarm system called Shift Guard and analysis of correlation of temperature and detector response. The Pierre Auger Observatory is the largest experiment to study ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The assumed relation between temperature and fluorescence detector response is studied together with descriptive temperature analysis, which shows that the air-conditioning system is not able to stabilize temperature enough. The temperature influence on camera response is investigated in order to measure the calibration correction factor. Shift Guard - the alarm system dedicated to protect fluorescence detectors and data taking is introduced and its functionality is described. The alarm system informs shifters about some events and situations that can endanger detector or deteriorate data quality. The basic parameters and alarm system logic are described together with light and sound signals. The discrepancy between measured and predicted number of muons at ground level calculated by EAS generators is showed and possible sources of this disagree- ment are studied. The result of massive dark photons decay in EAS as one of exotic muon source is presented. The analysis...

Měření energetického spektra kosmického záření s využitím událostí bohatých na čerenkovské záření na Observatoři Pierra Augera / Measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic rays using Cherenkov-dominated data at the Pierre Auger ObservatoryNovotný, Vladimír January 2020 (has links)
This thesis presents the energy spectrum of cosmic rays deduced from Cherenkov-dominated data measured by the fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Cherenkov-dominated events, used in the energy spectrum analysis at the Observatory for the first time, enable to decrease the energy threshold for the spectrum measurement down to 1015.5 eV. This energy is more than one order of magnitude lower than in preceding studies. The fluorescence detector was originally designed to detect the fluorescence light generated by extensive air showers in a hybrid mode with the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The reconstruction of events dom- inated by Cherenkov light is available due to a newly developed reconstruc- tion technique, the profile constrained geometry fit. Its implementation in the Pierre Auger Observatory software is documented. Aspects of the energy spectrum analysis are described. They consist of exposure calculations done with the use of extensive Monte Carlo simulations, unfolding of the detec- tor effects, and inferring the invisible energy correction in the energy region below 1017 eV. Systematic uncertainties of the measurement are estimated. 1

Cruz e Sousa: "zazděný" básník brazilského symbolismu / Cruz e Sousa: the "walled-in" Poet of Brazilian SymbolismKorpaczewski, Pavla January 2019 (has links)
This master's thesis deals with the analyse the poem in prose "Walled-in" by Brazilian black symbolist poet João da Cruz e Sousa. At the beginning it outlines the author's life and work. An insight into the starting points of Symbolism follows, accompanied by a detailed characterization of the essential features of its poetics as represented in the works by Cruz e Sousa. The analysis itself begins with the definition of the poem genre in prose and a brief outline of the content of the "Walled-in", which is a synthesis of the poet's artistic and life options resulting from being a black man. On this basis, I have determined the fundamental themes (Night, Art, Pain and Blackness), in which the poet's exclusion as an artist and as a negro. The initial intimate confession turns into a fiery speech that fights back narrow- minded artistic production of the period and the Negro discrimination.
