Studying in times of Corona

Schräder, Luise K. 21 April 2021 (has links)
In March 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic changed life circumstances drastically for everyone. Exactly one year ago the university had to shift from campus to the internet. This led to huge alterations in how professors lecture and how student university life takes place. After this year, it is time to evaluate the changes and put them into perspective. This means recognizing the benefits of technology to legal education instead of seeing the current situation as a replacement that disappears as soon as a return back to campus is possible.

Trauma-informed mindful embodied (TIME) yoga for childhood trauma survivors: self-regulation during a global pandemic

Silveira, Kristen 29 April 2022 (has links)
Survivors of complex childhood trauma (CCT) tend to develop distinctive mental health challenges later on in adulthood, which may be exacerbated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. CCT survivors often struggle with self-regulation, making it difficult to tolerate the distress associated with “gold-standard” trauma-processing therapies for survivors of single-incident and adult-onset trauma. Yoga can enhance self-regulation, through physical movements, breathing techniques, meditative focus, and ethical guidelines of behaviour. This dissertation encompasses the creation of a new approach for teaching yoga to trauma survivors, called TIME yoga. This approach is based on a neuropsychological understanding of the bio-psycho-social alterations that CCT survivors undergo. Chapter 1 details the methods employed in this series of dissertation studies. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with 26 adult survivors of CCT. Mental health, emotional functioning, resilience, and cognitive functioning were assessed via subjective and objective measures at two time points (i.e., pre- and post- participation in the online yoga program or waitlist). Chapter 2 is a retrospective and cross-sectional study describing survivors’ pre-intervention psychological and cognitive functioning during the pandemic, and evaluating the impact of trauma at particular developmental stages. Regression analyses revealed particular implications of adolescent and young-childhood trauma. Chapter 3 presents a manual of TIME yoga and feasibility data from the initial RCT, supporting both feasibility and safety of the program. Chapter 4 underscores yoga-related improvements in depressive symptoms, interoceptive awareness, and executive functioning. Using both repeated-measures ANOVAs and clinically meaningful indicators of change, this study illustrates how TIME yoga effectively improved survivors’ self-regulation during the global health crisis. Future directions for program development and evaluation are discussed. / Graduate / 2023-04-11

The Impact of COVID-19 on the Opioid Epidemic

Stewart, Hailey 01 May 2022 (has links)
The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected the lives of most Americans. People with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) were particularly vulnerable to the negative effects brought on by the pandemic. This study explored the increase in deaths due to opioid overdose during the pandemic exacerbated by factors such as increased stress, decrease in treatment options due to social distancing requirements and facility closures, social isolation, and an increase in spare time. Access to treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) was interrupted by the measures meant to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Through a systematic review of current literature, it was demonstrated that existing patients were able to maintain access to care, while few new patients were able to initiate treatment. Telehealth proved to be a vital means of assuring PWUD were able to access life-saving treatment amid a pandemic. Further research is needed to determine whether SUD treatment measures during the COVID-19 pandemic warrants changing the policies long term.

Skolkuratorers uppfattning om psykisk ohälsa bland högstadieelever under covid-19-pandemin / School counsellors perception of mental illness among secondary school students during the covid-19-pandemic

Niklasson, Linn, Jonsson, Maja January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate whether school counsellors’ perceptionsof secondary school students’ mental health illness have changed during the covid-19-pandemic, and whether the school counsellors’ working methods have changed. Furthermorehow the counsellors have worked with the students mental health during the pandemic. Schoolcounsellors have been interviewed to provide relevant answers to these questions which havebeen analyzed using KASAM, general systems theory and qualitative content analysis. Theresult of the study shows that the counsellors perceived that the covid-19 pandemic has not onlyhad an adverse effect on secondary school students’ mental health but also changed theirlifestyle, which have contributed to a lesser sense of belonging in society at large among thestudents. By using general systems theory the importance of a working student care team thathelps students’ during mental illness is highlighted since that improves their health in othersystems too. If the students have good mental health in school, their mental health is consideredto be better in their spare time too. The conclusion of the study was that the school counsellorsfelt that secondary school students mental health was affected negatively of the covid-19-pandemic and that they had to adapt thier way of work in form om distance learing, restrictionsand the students mental health.

Klimatkommunikation under covid-19-pandemin

Svensson, Julia, Vigren, Wilma January 2020 (has links)
Dealing with the consequences of climate change is one of humanity's greatest challenges.Researchers, advocates and other actors have long tried to communicate to the public aboutclimate change, but it seems to be more difficult than expected. A paradox has arisen whichmeans that the more facts that are presented, the less concern. A clear example of where andhow it can be expressed is in the media. Another global challenge is the ongoing covid-19pandemic. At an early stage, we began to observe how different types of media started to linkthe covid-19 pandemic to climate change. Based on the background of climatecommunication and this observation, the purpose of this study is to investigate how climatecommunication is expressed during the covid-19 pandemic via debate articles. A latentcontent analysis was performed and the results was analyzed with Per Espen Stoknes modelon the five psychological barriers and theory on strategies in climate communication. Theresults show that climate communication was expressed in different ways through bothbarriers and strategies, but mainly through strategies. The study can further increase theunderstanding of how climate change can be communicated to create climate commitmentand can thus serve as a springboard for further research.

Změny v přístupu k výuce u učitelů v době pandemie COVID-19 / Changes in teachers' attitude towards the education process during the COVID-19 pandemic

Petrovická, Barbora January 2022 (has links)
Our work is focused on the period of the global COVID-19 pandemic at its beginning, specifically in the spring and autumn of 2020. It particularly features the area of Czech educational system. We aim to reflect how the pandemic and the closely related distance education in schools affected teachers' attitude towards the education process and also their mental health. In the theoretical part we aspire to define basic terms, such as the teacher's personality, professional growth, motivation, stress, burn-out syndrome and mental hygiene. In addition, we offer an explanation of the process of distance education. The empirical part was realized via semi-structured interviews with teachers of theoretical subjects on vocational schools who were involved in the educational process during the time when it was forced to be led online. The most troublesome issues were the following: the teachers' inadequate technical skills and low self-confidence related to those, but also the minimal support from the schools' management regarding both the training in usage of on-line tools and the need of care of students', school employees' and parents' mental health. KEYWORDS personality, professional growth, motivation, mental hygiene, burn-out syndrome, COVID-19 pandemic, distance education

Koncepty "Sense of coherence" a "Sense of national coherence" jako prediktivní faktory duševního zdraví v období pandemie COVID-19 / The concepts of sense of coherence and sense of national coherence as predictive resources of mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic

Miková, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
Given the negative consequences the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to both the physical and mental health, there is a growing need to find the ways how to support and strengthen psychological resilience and mental health of the individuals in such an unprecedent situation. Consequently, this thesis explores the A. Antonovsky's salutogenetic model of health with a focus on the concepts of sense of coherence (SOC) and sense of national coherence (SONC) as potential predictors of mental health during COVID-19 pandemic. In the theoretical part, the topic of mental health, it's coneptualisation and predictors are presented, with an emphasis on the concepts of SOC and SONC. Additionally, the review of present research on mental health during COVID-19 pandemic is included. The research project analyses the data obtained through an online survey as a part of an international research study investigating the predictive factors of mental health during COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection in Czech sample was conducted in December 2020 and January 2021, using the Mental Health Continuum, SOC-13 and SONC scales. The sample included 476 participants. Multiple regression analysis confirmed the SOC as a significant predictor of mental health during COVID-19 pandemic among Czech sample. However, the predictive value...

“Det är nu pressen kommer igång” : En kvalitativ studie om socionomstudenters hantering av stress samt upplevelse av stress i samband med övergången från digital till fysisk undervisning / "IT'S NOW THE PRESS STARTS" : A qualitative study of social work students' handling of stress and experience of stress in connection with the transition from digital to physical education

Kugel, Natalie, Habbo, Sali January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how social work students handle and experience stress in connection to their education during the transition from digital to physical education. The target group was social work students in term two, term three and term seven at a university in central Sweden. A qualitative interview study was conducted where a semi-structured interviewguide was used and five respondents participated. The coping theory was used to thematize and analyze the results from the interviews. The results of the study show that social work students experience stress during their education in association to the transition from digital to physical education. The results show that the perceived stress may be linked to uncertainty about restrictions in connection with physical education and increased degree of difficulty in the courses of the program. The results also show that the social work students use social support and problem-focused strategies when managing stress in connection to their education. The conclusion of this study is that it can be difficult to know which factors that effect social work students' perceived stress and that social work students use several strategies for managing stress in connection to their education.

School-wide Academic Outcomes and Instructional Modality Used During the 2018-2022 School Years

Bowser, Matthew 01 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there was a significant relationship between school-wide academic outcomes and the instructional modalities utilized by public schools during the 2019-2022 school years. This study also determined if there was a significant difference in assessment scores earned by public school students in Tennessee before and after the shift from in-person schooling caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The researcher used a chi-squared test for independence to determine if there was a significant relationship between the modality of instruction used within a school during the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years and the school-wide academic outcomes from the American College Test (ACT) and the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Test (TCAP). Furthermore, the researcher used a two-tailed t-test for paired samples to determine if there was a significant difference in school-wide ACT composite scores, school-level TCAP one-year success rates, and TVAAS growth rates by comparing data across the 2018-2019, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 school years. The findings within this study showed mixed results relative to school-wide academic outcomes before, during, and after the pivot from in-person instruction caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Findings showed that school-wide academic success rates were significantly higher prior to the shift from in-person instruction caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic; however, school-wide TVAAS growth rates did not change significantly. Furthermore, this study showed that there was a statistically significant relationship between instructional modality and student academic outcomes, but findings suggested that the relationship was weakly associated. Therefore, instructional modality may not have been a key determiner of student performance and practitioners should focus on providing quality instruction regardless of instructional modality.
