Delamination Properties of a Vinyl-Ester/Glass Fibre Composite Toughened by Particulate-Modified Interlayers

The main aim of this work is to examine fracture toughness improvement mechanisms of a composite material containing tough interlayers modified with large thermoplastic particles. ¶ Various vinyl-ester (VE)/ poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends were used for the interlayer-toughening of a VE/glass fibre composite to increase delamination resistance of the material under mode I and mode II loading. Dry ABS powder was mixed with the liquid resin in four different weight ratios: 3.5, 7, 11 and 15 phr (parts per hundred parts of resin) while the layer thickness was varied from 150 to 500um. Firstly, the tensile and mode I fracture toughness properties of the VE/ABS blends were assessed, and, by using the Raman Spectroscopy technique, a chemical reaction was discovered which occurred during ABS/VE mixing. This reaction consisted of butadiene dissolution from the ABS particles into the VE. Also, butadiene saturation within the VE was achieved at a composition of around 7% ABS particle content. Both mode I and mode II fracture toughness of the composite were significantly improved with the application of interlayers. Mode I fracture toughness GIc was found to be a function of interlayer thickness and ABS particle content variations, with the latter dominating GIc after the saturation point. Mode II fracture toughness was found to be independent of interlayer thickness and only moderately influenced by particle content. The toughening mechanisms that were the most influential within this interlayered material were plastic deformation and micro-cracking of the layer materials. Evidence of both mechanisms was found using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). ¶ A numerical analysis was conducted, using the experimental results from this study, to further explain the basic toughening mechanisms and fracture behaviour in the materials. The aim of the analysis was to examine the influence of the particles on the plastic zone size that develops in front of the crack tip, and the interaction between the particles and the crack tip. For this purpose FEA elastic-plastic crack propagation models were employed. Good agreement with the experimental data was found.

Influence of Chloride-induced corrosion cracks on the strength of reinforced concrete

In marine environments and where de-icing salts are applied, the degradation of reinforced concrete structures due to chloride induced corrosion of the reinforcement is a major problem. The expansive nature of the corrosion process results in cracking of the concrete and eventually spalling. In order to select suitable remedial measures it is necessary to make an assessment of the residual strength and the residual life. In order to investigate the effect of corrosion on bond strength of the reinforcement, specimens comprising square prismatic sections containing steel reinforcement in the four corners have been subjected to a wet-dry cycle and corrosion has been accelerated by polarising the bars. The research has studied the change of bond strength with level of corrosion for 12 mm and 16 mm bars with concrete cover of 1 and 3 times the bar size. The bond strength is assessed by means of pull out tests and the corresponding extent of corrosion has been assessed in terms of the mass loss. Observations and measurements of the form of the corrosion (pit dimensions and loss of bar diameter) are also presented. The relationship between bond strength and surface crack width has been investigated. Results show that the surface crack width may be a good indicator of residual bond strength. In addition, the influence on bond strength of concrete compressive strength, reinforcement cover, bar position and bar size on the change of bond strength has been explored. It should be noted that all conclusions drawn in this project are based on tests on specimens without shear reinforcement (unconfined) and that accelerated corrosion (by impressed current) has been adopted. Consequently, care should be exercised in applying these results directly to structures in the field. Additional research is needed to assess the influence of impressed current on crack patterns and the effect of shear reinforcement.

Crack Detection in Welding Process using Acoustic Emission

<p>Abstract: The process of inspecting welds done in production at Volvo Aero in Trollhättan is timeconsuming and a lot of this time goes into examining faulty objects. The aim of this thesis is to startdevelopment of a system that analyses acoustic emission from cooling welds to determine the qualityof the weld. Our aim is to be able to detect cracks in the material and to give information on thecracks using the data gathered by our sensors. To do this we will use methods to locate sound sourcesand then rate our findings and do some simplifications on the result of our calculations. We willanalyze our calculated data to find crack signatures and classify our findings and give alarms if wefind cracks that are considered too big for comfort. We will also give insight in to future aspects of ourwork and look at ways to improve on our proposed methods. We will discuss our systems pros, consand what things have been taken into consideration during design, and what strategies we proposeto handle the results from the system.</p>

Discrete Element Modeling of Influences of Aggregate Gradation and Aggregate Properties on Fracture in Asphalt Mixes

Aggregate strength, gradation, and shape play a vital role in controlling asphalt mixture performance. Many studies have demonstrated the effects of these factors on asphalt mixture performance in terms of resistance to fatigue cracking and rutting. This study introduces numerical and analytical approaches supported with imaging techniques for studying the interrelated effects of aggregate strength, gradation, and shape on resistance of asphalt mixtures to fracture. The numerical approach relies on the discrete element method (DEM). The main advantage of this approach is the ability to account for the interaction between the internal structure distribution and aggregate properties in the analysis of asphalt mixture response and performance. The analytical approach combines aggregate strength variability and internal force distribution in an asphalt mixture to predict the probability of aggregate fracture. The numerical and analytical approaches were calibrated and verified using laboratory tests on various aggregate types and mixtures. Consequently these approaches were used to: (1) determine the resistance of various mixture types with different aggregate properties to fracture, (2) study the effects of aggregate strength variability on fracture, (3) quantify the influence of blending different types of aggregate on mixture strength, (4) develop a mathematical expression for calculating the probability of aggregate fracture within asphalt mixture, and (5) relate cracking patterns (cohesive: aggregate - aggregate and matrix - matrix, and adhesive: aggregate - matrix) in an asphalt mixture to internal structure distribution and aggregate properties. The results of this dissertation established numerical and analytical techniques that are useful for developing a virtual testing environment of asphalt mixtures. Such a virtual testing environment would be capable of relating the microscopic response of asphalt mixtures to the properties of the mixture constituents and internal structure distribution. The virtual testing environment would be an inexpensive mean to evaluate the influence of changing different material and design factors on the mixture response.

Tooth Interior Fatigue Fracture&amp;Robustness of Gears

The demands the automotive gear designer has to considerduring the gear design process have changed. To design a gearthat will not fail is still a challenging task, but now lownoise is also a main objective. Both customers and legalregulations demand noise reduction of gears. Moreover, thequality of the product is more in focus than ever before. Inaddition, the gear design process itself must be inexpensiveand quick. One can say that the gear designer faces a newdesign environment. The objective of this thesis is tocontribute to the answer to some of the questions raised inthis new design environment. In order to respond to the new design situation, the geardesigner must consider new phenomena of gears that werepreviously not a matter of concern. One such phenomenon is anew gear failure type, Tooth Interior Fatigue Fracture (TIFF).As the gear teeth are made more slender in an attempt to reducethe stiffness variation during the mesh cycle, therebypotentially reducing the noise, the risk of TIFF is increased.The phenomenon of TIFF is explored in detail (paper III-VI)through fractographic analysis, numerical crack initiationanalysis using FEM, determination of residual stress by meansof neutron diffraction measurements, testing for determiningmaterial fatigue properties, fracture mechanical FE-analysis,sensitivity analysis and the development of an engineeringdesign method. The main findings of the analysis of TIFF arethat TIFF cracks initiate in the tooth interior, TIFF occursmainly in case hardened idlers, the fracture surface has acharacteristic plateau at approximately the mid-height of thetooth and the risk of TIFF is more pronounced in slender gearteeth. Along with the more optimised gear design, there is atendency for the gear to be less robust. Low robustness, i.e.,great variation in performance of the product, implies a highincidence of rejects, malfunction and/or bad-will, all of whichmay have a negative effect on company earnings. As the use ofoptimisation decreases the safety margins, greater attentionhas to be paid to guaranteeing the products' robustness.Moreover, in order to be cost-effective, the qualities of thegear must be verified early in the design process, implying anextended use of simulations. In this thesis, two robustnessanalyses are presented in which the analysing tool issimulation. The first one considers robust tooth root bendingfatigue strength as the gear is exposed to mounting errors, thesecond one considers robust noise characteristics of a gearexposed to manufacturing errors, varying torque and wear. Bothof these case studies address the problem of robustness ofgears and demonstrate how it can be estimated by use ofsimulations. The main result from the former robustnessanalysis is that wide gears are more sensitive to mountingerrors, while the latter analysis showed that to achieve robustnoise characteristics of a gear it should have large helixangles, and some profile- and lead crowning should beintroduced. Life prediction and mechanisms for the initiation and growth of short cracks under fretting fatigue loading

Fretting fatigue is a damage process that may arise in engineering applications where small cyclic relative displacements develop inside contacts leading to detrimental effects on the material fatigue properties. Fretting is located in regions not easily accessible, which makes it a dangerous phenomenon. It is therefore important to be able to make reliable predictions of the fretting fatigue lives. The work presented in this thesis has its focus on different aspects related to fretting fatigue in the titanium alloy Ti-17. A fretting experiment was developed which allowed for separate control of the three main fretting loads. Initially, the evolution of the coefficient of friction inside the slip region was investigated experimentally and analytically. Subsequently, 28 fretting tests were performed in which large fatigue cracks developed. The fretting tests were firstly evaluated with respect to fatigue crack initiation through five multiaxial fatigue criteria. The criteria predicted a too high fretting fatigue limit. A possible clue to the discrepancy was found in the fretting induced surface roughness with the asperity-pit interactions. The fatigue growth of the large fretting cracks was numerically modelled through a parametric crack growth procedure. The predicted lives were compared to the experimental outcome. The numerical simulations showed that linear elastic fracture mechanics was an appropriate tool for the prediction of fretting fatigue propagation lives in the long crack regime. Fatigue cracks spend most of their propagation life in the small crack regime. The possibility of modelling the small crack behaviour is therefore very important from the engineering point of view. The fatigue growth of through thickness short cracks was studied experimentally and numerically in the four-point bend configuration. It was found that linear elastic fracture mechanics and closure-free material growth data furnished conservative estimates for cracks longer than 50 μm. One method to improve fretting fatigue life is to shot peen the contact surfaces. Experimental results on fretting life with or without shot peening were simulated. The fatigue life enhancement in shot peened specimens could be explained by slower crack growth in the surface material layer with residual compressive stresses. / QC 20100827

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is one of the most accurate ultrasonic methods for crack detection and sizing in pipeline girth welds. Its performance, however, is limited by the temporal resolution of the signal. In this thesis, we develop a signal processing method based on autoregressive spectral extrapolation to improve the temporal resolution of ultrasonic signals. The original method cannot be used in industrial applications since its performance is highly dependent on selection of a number of free parameters. This method is modified by optimizing its various steps and limiting the number of free parameters, and an automated algorithm for selection of values for the remaining free parameters is proposed based on the analysis of a large set of synthetic signals. The performance of the final algorithm is evaluated using experimental data; it is shown that the uncertainty in crack sizing accuracy can be reduced by as much as 80%. Furthermore, the proposed method is shown to be capable of resolving overlapping echoes; therefore, smaller cracks that have echoes that are not clearly resolved in the raw signal, can be detected and sized in the enhanced signal.

Writing on the Streets: Popular Literature and the Bad Black Hero

This dissertation examines the various ways in which pop-cultural illustrations of the “bad nigger” figure beginning in the late 1960s helped to shape the kinds of defiant and oppositional practices that define the lives of black male youths today. I offer a brief history of the cultural and literary trope of the so-called “bad nigger.” I not only chart the cultural and political expressions of the “bad nigger” trope from the antebellum South to the industrial North, I also offer a critique of these accounts of defiant black male behavior that have dominated much of the intellectual discourse. Writing on the Streets: Urban Literature’s Black Male Hero does not pretend that the struggles of poor black inner-city life are somehow romantic or dramatic. What this dissertation does do, however, is offer popular black male cultural productions as a new critical site for engaging the cultural politics of economic power and racial oppression. Much of the scholarship on black male youth culture fails to engage popular texts that respond to black peoples’ negotiation of global issues. The works that do engage popular expressions and cultural productions often underestimate the importance violence, defiance, and opposition plays in the construction of a black male identity, not just for poor urban black male youths, but for men of color in general. Thus, this dissertation intends to magnify the need for more critical inquiry into popular cultural productions such as “street literature” and rap music, both of which contain poetic as well as practical elements of community uplift and self-empowerment and engage issues of cultural nihilism and self-destruction. This project’s focus on non-canonical texts follows bell hooks’ methodology and whose intellectual philosophy argues for “learning in relation to living regular life, of using everything we already know to know more. Merging critical thinking in everyday life with knowledge learned in books and through study has been the union of theory and practice that has informed my intellectual cultural work” (hooks 2). My hope, therefore, is that the readings I offer here will open the possibility for scholars and students of literature to consider more earnestly the importance of popular cultural productions in black communities. Furthermore, I write this dissertation in an effort to convince cultural and literary critics to concern themselves with the unique history and plight of poor urban black males confronting oppression and struggling in this criminal society.

Application of thermomechanical processing for the improvement of boundary configurations in commercially pure nickel

The effect of thermo-mechanical processing by deformation and annealing on the grain boundary configuration of commercially pure Ni-200 is reported in this thesis. Ni-200 is unalloyed, thus avoiding the complex effects associated with alloying elements on the formation and development of different types of grain boundaries. One step strain-recovery with strain levels in the range of 3% to 7.5% (with 1.5% intervals) and annealing temperatures in the range of 800ºC to 1000ºC (with 100ºC intervals) were used in processing. The effects of parameters such as strain level, annealing temperature, annealing time and grain growth on grain boundary configurations were studied. Using Orientation Image Microscopy (OIM) it was found that the Fsp (fraction of special grain boundaries) value of strained samples annealed in the range of 800ºC to 1000ºC began to increase after a critical length of time, after which the Fsp value increased quickly and becoming a maximum in 2~4 minutes. The length of the critical annealing time for the increase of Fsp was shorter in the material with the higher levels of strain at a constant annealing temperature. Also the critical annealing time was shorter when annealed at higher temperatures under a fixed level of strain. The Fsp value increased to 80% from an as received value of about 30% in the samples with varying strain levels. However, the Fsp values only increased from 30% to 45% in the material without strain. Due to grain boundary migration, the Fsp values increased with grain size and became a maximum during the heat treatment of the strained material. In the material without strain however even when grain growth occurred, limited improvement in Fsp values occurred showing that contribution of strain is very important to the formation of special boundaries. By varying the strain levels, annealing temperatures and times, material with high Fsp values in a wide range of grain size can be obtained. Under the present processing conditions used however, multi-cycle was not helpful to the improvement of Fsp. TEM observations indicated dislocation tangles occurred near the grain boundary of the 1x6% strained samples. These dislocation tangles decreased with time at 800˚C and were reduced considerably after 20 minutes. Thermodynamic and kinetic models were used in the calculations of twin density-grain size relationships. The results indicated that the contribution of strain is equivalent to the increase of grain boundary energy, which provided an extra driving force and improved probability of twin embryo formation. / February 2009
