Rule-Based Approaches for Controlling on Mode Dynamic Systems

This dissertation presents new fuzzy logic techniques for designing control systems for a wide class of complex systems. The methods are developed in detail for a crane system which contains one rigid-body and one oscillation mode. The crane problem is to transfer the rigid body a given distance such that the pendulation of the oscillation mode is regulated at the final time using a single control input. The investigations include in-depth studies of the time-optimal crane control problem as an integral part of the work. The main contributions of this study are: (1) Development of rule-based systems (both fuzzy and crisp) for the design of optimal controllers. This development involves control variable parametrization, rule derivation with parameter perturbation methods, and the design of rule based controllers, which can be combined with model-based feedback control methods. (2) A thorough investigation and analysis of the solutions for time-optimal control problems of oscillation mode systems, with particular emphasis on the use of phase-plane interpretation. (3) Development of fuzzy logic control system methodology using expert rules obtained through energy reducing considerations. In addition, dual mode control is a "spin-off" design method which, although no longer time optimal, can be viewed as a near-optimal control method which may be easier to implement. In both types of design optimization of the fuzzy logic controller can be used to improve performance. / Ph. D.

Simplified Analysis of IMU Sensor Corruptions on Existing Pendulation Control System For Ship-Mounted Crane

Ship-mounted boom cranes play an important role in the ship-to-ship offshore cargo transport process. In recent years, there has been significant need to increase stability of the payload during the cargo transport process for both safety and efficiency reasons. However, the stability of the payload during the transport process directly correlates to the ship's pitch and roll motion that in turn relates to the current particular sea-state. In this study, we analyze an existing Pendulation Control System (PCS) developed by Sandia National Laboratories that reduces the payload's pendulation movement during transport. This system measures the ship motion through a complex inertial navigation system using an IMU and dual GPS receivers. In trying to simplify the analysis of the IMU sensor, we simulate new control solutions based solely on an IMU-only ship motion measurement system using both position- and velocity-based controllers. This study shows that an optional bandpass filter in the new control solution can reject a bias that appears in the estimated accelerometer data at the expense of higher sensitivity for the control. This study also shows that the velocity-based solution provides comparable if not better results than the position-based solution. Both methods are sensitive to the difference between the ship motion period and the center frequency of its bandpass filter. Lastly, it is shown that the bias of an accelerometer is not a large source of payload disturbance as compared to the scale factor error. / Master of Science

Adaptation of Delayed Position Feedback to the Reduction of Sway of Container Cranes

Cranes are increasingly used in transportation and construction. increasing demand and faster requirements necessitate better and more efficient controllers to guarantee fast turn-around time and to meet safety requirements. Container cranes are used extensively in ship-to-port and port-to-ship transfer operations. In this work, we will extend the recently developed delayed position feedback controller to container cranes. In contrast with traditional work, which models a crane as a simple pendulum consisting of a hoisting cable and a lumped mass at its end, we have modeled the crane as a four-bar mechanism. The actual configuration of the hoisting mechanism is significantly different from a simple pendulum. It consists typically of a set of four hoisting cables attached to four different points on the trolley and to four points on a spreader bar. The spreader bar is used to lift the containers. Therefore, the dynamics of hoisting assemblies of large container cranes are different from that of a simple pendulum. We found that a controller which treats the system as a four-bar mechanism has an improved response. We developed a controller to meet the following requirements: traverse an 80-ton payload 50 m in 21.5 s, including raising the payload 15 m at the beginning and lowering the payload 15 m at the end of motion, while reducing the sway to 50 mm within 5.0 s at the end of the transfer maneuver. The performance of the controller has been demonstrated theoretically using numerical simulation. Moreover, the performance of the controller has been demonstrated experimentally using a 1/10th scale model. For the 1/10th scale model, the requirements translate into: traverse an 80 kg payload 5 m in 6.8 s, including raising 1.5 m at the beginning and lowering 1.5 m at the end of motion, while reducing the sway to 5 mm in under 1.6 s. Habitat suitability modeling for the Mississippi Sandhill Crane, Grus canadensis pulla

In this study, I modeled the suitability of habitat on the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge for the federally endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis pulla). Habitat type and suitability changed over time due to seasonality of vegetation and succession in the absence of burning. Cranes used highly suitable habitat more in the non-growing than in the growing season, and may have been more constrained by resource availability during winter months. Cranes used some less-suitable areas including cypress drains, which provide roosting sites, and supplemental food plots. The mismatch between predicted quality and crane use suggests that no single habitat provides all resources required for the population to persist. Prescribed burning to maintain grassland habitat is essential for maintaining high quality habitat for cranes. The relative availability of food on supplemental food plots and grasslands, as well as the behavior of cranes toward roads, require additional investigation.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a model that represents the dynamics of a hydraulically operated forestry crane. The model was derived with the traditional Euler-Lagrange formalism and considers the crane mechanics, three double-acting hydraulic cylinders and the valve control unit. On the basis of the derived model we reproduced the entire crane model in MATLAB in order to run simulations herewith. This gave us the possibility to do parameter changes for further studies of the crane in motion. Another major goal within the thesis work was to estimate cylinder friction of the hydraulic actuators. We built up a test rig and used double-acting cylinders for determing their frictional behaviour. For this, we ran open-loop experiments in order to create velocity-friction maps that represented the static friction force of the cylinders. In this concern, we varied system pressure and cylinder load to study their influence on the friction force. By means of the derived static friction maps we approached the cylinder’s dynamic friction behaviour and applied both step and ramp control inputs to examine the spring-damping characteristics of the microspoic bristles in the contacting area. The dynamic friction experiments have been exerted in the fashion of the LuGre model. As a result we acquired different nominal friction parameters that we necessarily used to develope adequate friction models. A third objective of this thesis was to establish a crane-tip control. Instead of a traditional control, providing a direct relationship between joystick input and cylinder extension, the focus was to build up a control for the end-effector’s trajectory in a two-dimensional frame. This could be achieved by using inverse kinematics in order to determine the required joint angles that corresponded to the desired position of the crane-tip. The work also contains a CD including all developed MATLAB models that have been written within this project.

O cenário da poesia moderna de língua inglesa congrega uma série de autores ingleses e norte-americanos que criaram obras com estilos, formas, problemáticas e visões de mundo altamente diversificados. Uma ampla gama de recursos linguísticos e estéticos foi desenvolvida, incluindo o uso da colagem, a sintaxe fragmentada, o verso livre e a linguagem coloquial algumas vezes intercalada com a solene. Dentre tais autores modernos, o poeta norte-americano Hart Crane se destaca por sua obra poética de alta originalidade e complexidade e suas perspectivas estéticas bastante individualizadas. Em sua obra, Crane articulou recursos e referências literárias e filosóficas variadas. Sua poesia se caracteriza por uma versificação que contempla do pentâmetro iâmbico branco elisabetano ao verso livre moderno; uma sintaxe que se distancia da língua falada com inversões e rupturas; um vocabulário eclético que une arcaísmos a neologismos; uma retórica rica em figuras de linguagem; e um ideário simbólico e temático compreendendo as ideias e imagens místicas e metafísicas do simbolismo francês e a exploração de sentimentos individuais do romantismo inglês. Além desses referenciais, Crane foi particularmente inspirado e instigado pelo poeta norte-americano moderno T. S. Eliot, cuja erudição e domínio de técnicas como a colagem e o verso livre Crane tinha como modelo, mas de cujas perspectivas estéticas classicistas e tradicionalistas e visões da modernidade pessimistas Crane discordava e tentou refutar. Esse empreendimento resultou em uma obra breve, porém rica, cuja complexidade foi muitas vezes reprovada como excessiva ou confusa, mas cuja influência e interesse vêm aumentando nos anos após sua morte. Este estudo oferece uma apresentação das principais características da obra poética e das perspectivas estéticas de Hart Crane, centrando-se na análise formal e temática e em uma tradução para o português da sequência de poemas intercalados conhecida como “Voyages”, presente no primeiro livro de Crane, White Buildings, e geralmente considerada uma de suas principais obras. Alguns dos mais significativos poemas de Crane são estudados à luz de suas próprias teorias estéticas e das avaliações de críticos com perspectivas variadas, como Allen Tate, Yvor Winters, R. W. B. Lewis, Margareth Uroff, Thomas Yingling e Lee Edelman, entre outros. Buscam-se uma compreensão de sua obra e a apresentação em língua portuguesa de um de seus principais trabalhos líricos com o objetivo de familiarizar o leitor e o estudioso brasileiro com as obras e ideias de um poeta de língua inglesa cuja importância vem sendo atestada ao longo dos anos. / The scenery of modern English language poetry congregates a number of English and North-American authors that created works with highly diversified styles, forms, problematic and worldviews. A wide range of linguistic and aesthetic resources was developed, including the use of collage, fragmented syntax, free verse, and the intercalation of colloquial and formal language. Among these modern authors, the North-American poet Hart Crane stands out due to his highly original and complex poetic works and his strongly individualized aesthetic perspectives. In his work, Crane articulated various philosophic and literary references and resources. His poetry is characterized by a versification that comprises both the Elizabethan blank iambic pentameter and the modern free verse; a syntax distanced from the spoken language with inversions and breakages; an eclectic vocabulary conjoining archaisms and neologisms; a rich and ornate rhetoric including complex figures of speech; and themes and symbols associated to mystical and metaphysical images and ideas from French Symbolism and the English Romantic exploration of subjective feelings. In addition to these references, Crane was particularly inspired by the North-American modern poet T. S. Eliot, whose erudition and mastery of techniques such as the collage and the free verse Crane had as a model, but with whose classicist and traditionalist aesthetic perspectives and pessimist views of modernity Crane disagreed and attempted to counter. Thus, Crane’s poetic work was largely conceived as a response to that of Eliot, aiming at opposing to his pessimism a more optimistic view, postulating a form of spirituality that is proper to the modern experience, which should be explored and registered by the poet, in Crane’s view. For such, Crane developed an aesthetic theory that emphasized the poet’s own subjectivity and personal experiences, encompassing elements of, among others, the American Transcendentalist school of thought. This endeavor resulted in a brief, but very rich poetic oeuvre, whose complexity has been often reproached as excessive or confusing, but whose influence and interest have been increasing in the years following his death. This study provides a presentation of the main characteristics of Hart Crane’s poetic work and aesthetic theories, focusing on the formal and thematic analysis and the translation into the Portuguese language of the poetic sequence known as “Voyages,” included in Crane’s first book and generally considered one of his main works. Some of Crane’s poems are here studied according to his own aesthetic perspectives as well as the evaluations of varied perspectives, such as those of Allen Tate, Yvor Winters, R. W. B. Lewis, Margareth Uroff, Thomas Yingling and Lee Edelman, among others. An understanding of Crane’s work and the presentation in Portuguese language of one of his most celebrated lyrical works are aimed at in order to familiarize the Brazilian reader and student with the works and the ideas of an English language poet whose importance has been attested throughout the years.

O capítulo 1 trata da vida do autor e de sua obra, situando-a em seu contexto histórico-literário, e de um breve estudo sobre as diversas obras e artigos que se dedicam à análise do livro em questão.O segundo capítulo discorre sobre a teoria da tradução e o problema do estilo na mesma. Esta pesquisa procura seguir a proposta de Aubert (1998) e de Barbosa (1990) no que diz respeito às modalidades (ou procedimentos) de tradução; o estudo das diferenças existentes entre os planos de representação lingüística de Vinay e Darbelnet (1995); e a tensão existente entre tradução literal e tradução livre. O capítulo 3 discorre sobre o movimento impressionista na pintura e suas influências na literatura e, portanto, em The Red Badge of Courage. O quarto capítulo trata da descrição e análise das traduções da referida obra, apontando as modalidades de tradução aplicadas aos textos, observando as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos tradutores, bem como as soluções por eles encontradas a fim de manterem o sentido do original e recriarem a forma do texto língua de partida. / The present work aims at a descriptive analysis of three translations into Portuguese of The Red Badge of Courage, by the American Stephen Crane, in order to find out which translation conveys a stylistic correspondence with the source text. Chapter 1 deals with the author's life and work, putting The Red Badge of Courage in its literary-historical context, and with a brief study about the several books and articles that contribute themselves to the analysis of The Red Badge of Courage. The second chapter is about the theory of translation and the problem of style in it. This research attempts to follow Aubert's (1998) and Barbosa's (1990) proposals regarding the procedures of translation; the study of differences between the concrete and abstract levels of expression by Vinay & Darbelnet (1995); and also the tension between literal and free translation. Chapter 3 discourses on Impressionism in painting and its influence on literature and therefore on The Red Badge of Courage. The fourth chapter deals with the description and analysis of excerpts of the above-mentioned book, pointing out the procedures of translation employed in the texts, noticing the difficulties faced by the translators, as well as the solutions they found in order to keep the original meaning and to recreate the form of the source text.

Este estudo oferece uma apresentação das principais características da obra poética e das perspectivas estéticas de Hart Crane, centrando-se na análise formal e temática e em uma tradução para o português da sequência de poemas intercalados conhecida como “Voyages”, presente no primeiro livro de Crane, White Buildings, e geralmente considerada uma de suas principais obras. Alguns dos mais significativos poemas de Crane são estudados à luz de suas próprias teorias estéticas e das avaliações de críticos com perspectivas variadas, como Allen Tate, Yvor Winters, R. W. B. Lewis, Margareth Uroff, Thomas Yingling e Lee Edelman, entre outros. Buscam-se uma compreensão de sua obra e a apresentação em língua portuguesa de um de seus principais trabalhos líricos com o objetivo de familiarizar o leitor e o estudioso brasileiro com as obras e ideias de um poeta de língua inglesa cuja importância vem sendo atestada ao longo dos anos. / The scenery of modern English language poetry congregates a number of English and North-American authors that created works with highly diversified styles, forms, problematic and worldviews. A wide range of linguistic and aesthetic resources was developed, including the use of collage, fragmented syntax, free verse, and the intercalation of colloquial and formal language. Among these modern authors, the North-American poet Hart Crane stands out due to his highly original and complex poetic works and his strongly individualized aesthetic perspectives. In his work, Crane articulated various philosophic and literary references and resources. His poetry is characterized by a versification that comprises both the Elizabethan blank iambic pentameter and the modern free verse; a syntax distanced from the spoken language with inversions and breakages; an eclectic vocabulary conjoining archaisms and neologisms; a rich and ornate rhetoric including complex figures of speech; and themes and symbols associated to mystical and metaphysical images and ideas from French Symbolism and the English Romantic exploration of subjective feelings. In addition to these references, Crane was particularly inspired by the North-American modern poet T. S. Eliot, whose erudition and mastery of techniques such as the collage and the free verse Crane had as a model, but with whose classicist and traditionalist aesthetic perspectives and pessimist views of modernity Crane disagreed and attempted to counter. Thus, Crane’s poetic work was largely conceived as a response to that of Eliot, aiming at opposing to his pessimism a more optimistic view, postulating a form of spirituality that is proper to the modern experience, which should be explored and registered by the poet, in Crane’s view. For such, Crane developed an aesthetic theory that emphasized the poet’s own subjectivity and personal experiences, encompassing elements of, among others, the American Transcendentalist school of thought. This endeavor resulted in a brief, but very rich poetic oeuvre, whose complexity has been often reproached as excessive or confusing, but whose influence and interest have been increasing in the years following his death. This study provides a presentation of the main characteristics of Hart Crane’s poetic work and aesthetic theories, focusing on the formal and thematic analysis and the translation into the Portuguese language of the poetic sequence known as “Voyages,” included in Crane’s first book and generally considered one of his main works. Some of Crane’s poems are here studied according to his own aesthetic perspectives as well as the evaluations of varied perspectives, such as those of Allen Tate, Yvor Winters, R. W. B. Lewis, Margareth Uroff, Thomas Yingling and Lee Edelman, among others. An understanding of Crane’s work and the presentation in Portuguese language of one of his most celebrated lyrical works are aimed at in order to familiarize the Brazilian reader and student with the works and the ideas of an English language poet whose importance has been attested throughout the years.
