Meridian International Contemporary Culture Center Proposed Addition to Meridian International Center

Waites, Elizabeth Anne 01 August 2008 (has links)
Located just off of Sixteenth Street NW in Washington, D.C., the Meridian International Center complex sits on an elevated, crescent-shaped swath of land opposite Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park. On the site are two neoclassical residences, both designed by John Russel Pope in the early 20th century. Initially designed as diplomatic residences, when Meridian International Center purchased the site in 1960, the houses were converted into facilities for the organization. Today, having recently undergone extensive renovations the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Meridian International Center is devoted to the exchange of people, ideas, and art. The organization aims to promote international understanding through diplomatic exchanges, arts programs, lecture series, and educational programs. The majority of operations is devoted to the International Visitors Program, however in recent years, the organization has expressed a desire to expand their other programs, specifically the Arts & Culture and World Affairs divisions. A primary intention of Meridian International Center is to open its doors to the city, to invite and engage the public in international matters through a variety of expositions. Currently lacking sufficient space to accommodate such programs, this thesis proposes a new facility for Meridian International Center's building complex. This facility is to function as a Contemporary Culture Center. With the intention of opening the institution to the public, both literally and figuratively, the building is to act as a beacon in the city for the sharing and mixing of cultures. / Master of Architecture

Flemingsberg Kulturhusen

Aleksic, Uros January 2021 (has links)
My thesis project is about designing a building that culturally actives Flemingsberg, a suburb in the south of Stockholm, and makes a meeting place for all its people. Flemingsberg has a specific structure that assembles and at the same time divides it socially and geographically. People work, study, travel, and live here. Flemingsberg is developing towards becoming a center of southern Stockholm. Yet, the culture does not take enough space within that plan as I believe it should do. My building elevates above train platforms and captures an enormous amount of people that circulate there every day. The placement of my design embraces people to daily encounter culture and be a part of it, which they aren’t today.

Bodies in Parallax: Reframing the Cultural Experience of Miami Beach

Azadeh, Amir January 2013 (has links)
Parallax is integral to the conception of movement in modern architectural space. This research examines the role of architectural parallax in creating dynamic spaces that champion the primacy of perception to reinforce a conceptual narrative. The study is contextualized in the cinematic context of Miami Beach to understand the dynamic quality of its public spaces. An analysis of these spaces studies the role of parallax in reinforcing the city???s scopophiliac meta-narrative of Seeing and being Seen. A final design project is situated within the shifting sociocultural context of Miami Beach today as it strives to reinvent itself into a cultural destination for the high Arts. The chosen site is a historically significant site that has remained as a municipal parking lot for over 70 years, and may not be developed for commercial purposes. The design proposes Collins Cultural Center that draws from the exhibitionist Beach culture of the city and fuses it with the high Arts culture. The aim is to use parallax as an architectural strategy to create a dynamic space for cultural production and exchange. Reframing the cultural imagination of residents and visitors fuels Miami Beach???s momentum towards becoming a future cultural destination for the Arts.

The Accidental Place: Louis Armstrong Park Out of Place on the North Side

Estrade, Yvonne 19 December 2003 (has links)
The failed New Orleans Cultural Center Complex was cultural genocide to an area of the neighborhood known as Treme, where a tribute to the jazz great and native son, Louis Armstrong, was planned as an afterthought. The questions remain, was the planning and building of Louis Armstrong Park responsible for the genocide of the Treme neighborhood, is the park an appropriate use of land, and what are the prospects for the park's future? This thesis examines the cultural gumbo of New Orleans history, explores the early days of Louis Armstrong and the development of jazz, sets the record straight by vindicating the Louis Armstrong Park as the culprit for demolition in Treme, and takes a look at "the Back ‘o Town" as a tribute to him.

The Relationships between Performing Arts and Functions of the Cultural Centers in the Seven Cities/Counties of Southern Taiwan

Fang, Min-hwa 01 September 2011 (has links)
The Municipal cultural center plays the major role for culture promotion in every city/county in Taiwan. It has great influence on performing arts industry in the past 20 years. Facing the environment change, a municipal cultural center should know how to adjust its functions to meet the needs of the theater in the future. The researcher studied the cultural centers in the seven cities/counties of southern Taiwan before of the merger of 2011, analyzed the development of performing arts, arts activities, audience participation, and the utilization of these cultural centers. The staffs of seven cultural centers, fourteen performing arts groups, and four experts¡¦ opinions are asked in order to know the strength and weakness of cultural center. To accomplish these purposes, the researcher applied the case study method of qualitative research in this study. The study also adopted questionnaire survey and interview to collect data. On the part of the cultural centers, it showed that: 1. Cultural centers usually meet the demands of performing arts groups and provide venue. 2. Cultural centers make their own application schedules, twice a year. 3. Most of the cultural centers have middle-sized theaters. 4. The renting cost of the venue depends on each center. 5. The performances of the cultural centers usually come from domestic groups. The programs directly sponsored by the cultural centers are rare. On the part of performing arts groups, most of them are satisfied with the assistance of the cultural centers. However, they still raise some issues which cultural centers should improve, such as the application schedule, the usage time of the venue, the venues staffs¡¦ collaboration, the provision and improvement of the theaters¡¦ equipments, promotion method and higher subsidy. The study concluded that the cultural centers should adjust their policies, redefine their positions, raise the budget, cultivate the professional talent of the workers, develop self-characteristic, cooperate with other centers, improve the quality of programs, give clear channel of the information, enhance the relationships with the communities and develop the audience.

In Social Educational institutes Privately Operated Discussion ¡V The Case study of Kaohsiung Chungcheng Cultural Center

Liu, Hsiu-chen 15 September 2006 (has links)
The government of Taiwan tries to promote privatization of some public sectors. Through the cooperation between public and private sector, win-win-win outcome¡Xa triangular formula for winning¡Xwill be created. Nowadays, many social educational institutes are trapped in some difficulties in budget and human resources. That is why the public sector should reflect on what they have done in order to achieve the sustained management. This case study is based on qualitative analysis. Literatures are reviewed, mainly focused on the theoretical basis of privatization of some public sectors. In addition, the data is collected about how the social institutes comply with the policy of government reform, especially using the mechanisms of elimination of routine government work, deregulation, corporatization, outsourcing, and localization. Under this circumstances, the purpose of the study was to investigate the feasibility of privatizing Kaohsiung Chungcheng Cultural Center. Through the analyses of internal and external environmental factors, the findings are as follows. Kaohsiung Chungcheng Cultural Center has the problem of redefining the business scope. However, there is no need for organization reform through administrative incorporation for total privatization, in order to turn into an international urban resort. This study presents itself as reference in policy making.

Student Perceptions of Native American Student Affairs at the University of Arizona: What Can We Learn from the Population We Serve?

Bernadett, Gabriela Maya Matokheosic January 2015 (has links)
This thesis uses Native American Student Affairs (NASA) at the University of Arizona (UA) as a case study to see where NASA matches and diverges from the current literature on Native American Cultural Centers (NACC). Twenty-eight current Native American undergraduates and graduates were surveyed about their views on NASA, and their responses were then analyzed for common themes. The findings showed that NASA was similar to the current research when it came to themes of community, promoting culture, feeling less isolated, networking, and having an independent space. It diverged on one demographic aspect, namely a significant portion of student respondents came from reservations, which is not reflective of the Native community in the United States as a whole. Additionally, it mentioned the importance of event hosting, which is not mentioned in the current literature at all. The majority of students identified NASA as creating a space for them to feel supported, provide resources, network, and host events that promote awareness of Native American issues. The thesis ends with recommendations for NASA based on the responses, and advocates for further research to delve deeper into the nuances of NACC's and their responsibility to continuously adapt to the needs of their students.
