An analysis of the views of newspaper readers regarding selected incidents of intergroup controversy in post-Apartheid South AfricaSibango, Babalwa 06 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the nature of opinions and attitudes expressed in letters to South African newspapers regarding selected incidents of interracial controversy, namely the Botes (2010) and Forum for Black Journalists (FBJ) (2008) incidents. A qualitative and quantitative content analysis of these letters was conducted to gauge the attitudes that writers displayed towards members of their cultural group (ingroup) and members of other cultural groups (outgroups). The results of the qualitative analysis indicated that individuals in a racial group have different perspectives of in- and outgroup members. The results of the quantitative analysis, however, showed that the majority of writers tend to display positive attitudes towards ingroup members and negative attitudes towards out groups. The dominance of positive attitudes towards ingroups and negative attitudes towards outgroups can be attributed to myths and discourses circulating in postapartheid South Africa and the current social climate in general. The study concluded that although individuals’ attitudes may differ from the stark negative attitudes displayed towards outgroups during the apartheid era, negative attitudes towards outgroups persist. / Communication Science / M. Foreseeing Political Change. Structure, System and Agency in the Making of the Lebanese Intifadha al-IqtadQUARENGHI, ALESSANDRO 04 July 2007 (has links)
The thesis aims to answer the question 'could the Lebanese Intifadha al-Iqtad have been predicted?' In order to do so, it first of all tries to define the political event, in terms of features, dynamic, and outcome. Secondly, it outlines the epistemological assumptions on which a scientific prediction of the future could be based. Thirdly, it puts forward a framework for foreseeing the future organised on different levels and divided into macro-categories. Finally, it analyses the Lebanese Intifadha al-Iqtad according to the proposed framework.

This doctoral work to highlight the relevance of the - atlantic cultural complex - concept, spanning the ancient and middle Bronze age, based on the analysis of funeral manifestations documented throughout Northern Spain and South-Western France. The choice to study regions which remain less visible with respect to the available documentation on the atlantic domain, as a point of reference for this research, was done in order to acknowledge their individual value and to understand the relationships between these regions and with those of the continental iberian domain. Data for the meridional atlantic zone has considerably expanded over the past thirty years, thanks to the development of preventive archaeological activities, thus enabling the contextualisation of data from past explorations. The main objective of this research is to characterise the funeral finalities and furniture used by people in this area, in order to define and delimit different cultural groups. In order to do this we used a double-scale for analysis : a micro-scale centered on Galicia and the Adour basin, and a macro-scale encompassing the central and east-central front of atlantic Iberia. The first scale allowed us to analyse the data in a very exhaustive manner, integrating brand-new data, whereas with the second scale, which is much more global and synthetic, we established a general and critical panorama of the data for the cantabrian and Basque regions of Spain. The combination of these two approaches allows us to establish a variety of comparisons on the documentation about these areas, and to identify many convergences, especially with regards to material culture that had not been addressed when constructing the Atlantic Bronze concept. This includes pottery items, as well as a certain immobilism on behalf of the atlantic regions in response to the Meseta cultures. These elements, along with funeral changes that occurred between the ancient and middle Bronze age allow us to characterise what can be considered as the common atlantic dynamics. Lastly, our database of over 260 sites, raises the question of what factors might have caused the composition of the various different cultural groups in the area, emphasizing the role played by exterior influences, local substrates and topographical obstacles.

This thesis investigates second-generation immigrants, more precisely the Quebecers whose parents are from Algerian immigration from the 90s. This wave of immigration offers a legitimate framework to examine the second generation, because the parents of these Quebecers immigrated in a given temporality and geography, while also coming from the same social background. Thus, these Quebecers were socialized through two cultural groups, that is, that of Quebec and that of their parents. These two groups may seem in contradiction or in tension regarding the social norms and values that guide and frame their lives. This thesis is therefore interested in understanding how this new generation, who grew up in Quebec, deal with their parents’ expectations regarding the respect of family and religious values and traditions. To do so, we will explore two main themes. The first one focuses on the relationship between these Quebecers and their family history. The second one focuses on the position held by these Quebecers regarding different family dynamics (school, religion, what is forbidden).

The Dominican Sisters of St Catharine of Siena arrived in South Africa in 1877. White
women joined the congregation. In 1928 the first black woman entered the congregation
but because of the policies affecting the different race groups in South Africa, the full
integration of black and coloured women was not achieved until 1983. Chapter 1
introduces the topic of the integration of the black and coloured sisters. Chapter 2 traces
the origin of the congregation and looks at its development. A brief overview of the story
of the black sisters is given in Chapter 3. In the next chapter archival sources are used to
understand what happened. Interviews that were conducted with some of the sisters
involved in the story are given in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6 there is a look at the current
situation and some of the implications for the future as the process of integration continues. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Systematic Theology)
