The Importance of Curation: a Case-Study of the Subfossil Lemur Collection in the Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University / Kureringens betydelse: en fallstudie av Evolutionsmuseets paleontologiska samling av subfossila lemurer

Lindkvist, Maria January 2016 (has links)
In times when many natural history museums experience financial cuts, it is important to show why museums matter, what they can offer, and what they mean for both the public and the scientific society. The collections are the heart of the museum and they need to be well-managed in order to attract visitors (both researchers and public). Curation of collections is an essential part of the museum operation but it may be affected by understaffing and/or lack of physical space. If collections in need of curation (especially old collections) are left unattended, they may lose their scientific value.     This project was done in order to show the importance of curation and its possibility to increase the value of a collection. The aim of this project was to show that a thoroughly explored and well curated collection becomes more accessible and interesting for internal and external sources and thereby the scientific and public value increases. This was conducted as a case-study of the collection of subfossil lemurs at the Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University. The collection was catalogued, its historical background was studied, and the old collection description was reviewed. The collection catalogue produced (Appendix D) has increased the availability and scientific value as it is now easier to get an overview of the collection, the catalogue include updated anatomical and taxonomical specimen descriptions, it is possible to administer loans on collection specimens, and the catalogue data can be published in accessible databases. The historical background (Appendices A and B) has shown that the collection has connections to other Swedish museum collections in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and Lund. It is possible to use the information in the historical background in an eventual exhibition. This has increased the public value. However, it is possible to further increase both the availability and the value of the collection and some suggestions are given.

Developing Data Management Services: What Support do Researchers Need?

Kollen, Christine 18 October 2016 (has links)
Presented at the University of Arizona 2016 IT Summit / The past several years has seen an increasing emphasis on providing access to the results of research, both publications and data. The majority of federal grant funding agencies require that researchers include a data management plan as part of their grant proposal. In response, the University of Arizona Libraries, in collaboration with the Office of Research and Discovery and the University Information Technology Services, has been providing data management services and resources to the campus for the past several years. In 2014, we conducted a research data management survey to find out how UA researchers manage their research data, determine the demand for existing services and identify new services that UA researchers need. In the fall of 2015, the Data Management and Data Publication and Curation (DMDC) Pilot was started to determine what specific services and tools, including training and support and the needed technology infrastructure, researchers need to effectively and efficiently manage and curate their research data. This presentation will present what data management services we currently are offering, discuss findings from the 2014 survey, and present initial results from the DMDC pilot.

Curated Reasoning by Formal Modeling of Provenance

Shaw, Kevin B 20 December 2013 (has links)
The core problem addressed in this research is the current lack of an ability to repurpose and curate scientific data among interdisciplinary scientists within a research enterprise environment. Explosive growth in sensor technology as well as the cost of collecting ocean data and airborne measurements has allowed for exponential increases in scientific data collection as well as substantial enterprise resources required for data collection. There is currently no framework for efficiently curating this scientific data for repurposing or intergenerational use. There are several reasons why this problem has eluded solution to date to include the competitive requirements for funding and publication, multiple vocabularies used among various scientific disciplines, the number of scientific disciplines and the variation among workflow processes, lack of a flexible framework to allow for diversity among vocabularies and data but a unifying approach to exploitation and a lack of affordable computing resources (mostly in past tense now). Addressing this lack of sharing scientific data among interdisciplinary scientists is an exceptionally challenging problem given the need for combination of various vocabularies, maintenance of associated scientific data provenance, requirement to minimize any additional workload being placed on originating data scientist project/time, protect publication/credit to reward scientific creativity and obtaining priority for a long-term goal such as scientific data curation for intergenerational, interdisciplinary scientific problem solving that likely offers the most potential for the highest impact discoveries in the future. This research approach focuses on the core technical problem of formally modeling interdisciplinary scientific data provenance as the enabling and missing component to demonstrate the potential of interdisciplinary scientific data repurposing. This research develops a framework to combine varying vocabularies in a formal manner that allows the provenance information to be used as a key for reasoning to allow manageable curation. The consequence of this research is that it has pioneered an approach of formally modeling provenance within an interdisciplinary research enterprise to demonstrate that intergenerational curation can be aided at the machine level to allow reasoning and repurposing to occur with minimal impact to data collectors and maximum impact to other scientists.

The capital of São Paulo offers thousands of entertainment options for every type of people, but the robust network of establishments can prove to be too complex even for locals looking for a fun option. This public, despite having an interest in consuming, may end up giving up enjoying this universe due to the immensity of choices that need to be made. On the other hand, establishments lack a hub in search of alternatives to get to know their audience better and generate a stable flow of customers, even at less favorable times. In this way, this work analyzes how couples living in the city behave when selecting tours and proposes a product marketing strategy. The methodological part of the research included theoretical revision on the current journalistic market, information curation, creation of value and founding. In addition, it includes a quantitative research with the target audience and a qualitative research with specialists of diverse areas (journalism, digital marketing, branding and administration). A business plan was developed that seeks to create unique experiences for these couples of all genres in São Paulo. The project demonstrates economic and financial viability (IRR of 51.3% and NPV of R$ 1,354,189.51) and associated risks. This project appears in a moment of deep transformations in the information universe, coming from the internet. Therefore, its main objective is to contribute to the planning of new journalistic businesses, in a scenario in which journalism, marketing and administration are increasingly close.

Ferreira, Carolina Borges 31 October 2016 (has links)
Ever since becoming technically mediated, concert music served as a model to assess the achievements of high acoustic fidelity, both in radio broadcasts, as in domestic hearing in re-producers. After various processes of technological mediation, through listening to records and similar (LP, DVD, Blu-ray etc), consumption of concert music is extended to virtual environ-ments: streaming transmissions provide to the public concert music in a way unprecedented, since it does not have as a reference point the material object, aside from the fact that they offer the reception in real time, live. The different forms of reception on which this service is based have attracted the interest of researchers from different areas of knowledge. In the case of mu-sic, it unfolds in a field of study in music; specifically in sonology. This work intends to present a study on the reception of online concert music, through a comparative analysis of the prefer-ences by the consuming public of that service and what is actually offered to them by these services. Two aspects will be analyzed in detail: systems of \"recommendation\" and \"digital curation\", since they are the way in which the service is generated and managed. Frequently used in digital platforms for listening to popular music, little is known about the operational functioning of this service, in the case of concert music. This research thus aims to evaluate how this methodology is applicable to the concert music repertoire. The main objective of this research is scrutinizing the processes of this new way of listening, which depends on the critical interaction between subscribers and the service provider. In short, to understand in more detail the particular aspects that constitute the operation of streaming services.

Supporting Metadata Management for Data Curation: Problem and Promise

Westbrooks, Elaine L. 02 May 2008 (has links)
Breakout session from the Living the Future 7 Conference, April 30-May 3, 2008, University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, AZ. / Research communities and libraries are on the verge of reaching a saturation point with regard to the number of published reports documenting, planning, and defining e-science, e-research, cyberscholarship, and data curation. Despite the volumes of literature, little research is devoted to metadata maintenance and infrastructure. Libraries are poised to contribute metadata expertise to campus-wide data curation efforts; however, traditional and costly library methods of metadata creation and management must be replaced with cost-effective models that focus on the researcher’s data collection/analysis process. In such a model, library experts collaborate with researchers in building tools for metadata creation and maintenance which in turn contribute to the long-term sustainability, organization, and preservation of data. This presentation will introduce one of Cornell University Library’s collaborative efforts curating 2003 Northeast Blackout Data. The goal of the project is to make Blackout data accessible so that it can serve as a catalyst for innovative cross-disciplinary research that will produce better scientific understanding of the technology and communications that failed during the Blackout. Library staff collaborated with three groups: engineering faculty at Cornell, Government power experts, and power experts in the private sector. Finally the core components with regard to the metadata management methodology will be outlined and defined. Rights management emerged as the biggest challenge for the Blackout project.

Microbial biodeterioration of human skeletal material from Tell Leilan, Syria (2900 – 1900 BCE)

Pitre, Mindy Christina 06 1900 (has links)
Human bone is considered one of the most direct and insightful sources of information on peoples of the past. As a result, curation protocols have been developed to ensure that the integrity of human skeletal collections is maintained. Although collections are generally considered safe when these protocols are followed, the results of this investigation show that the Tell Leilan skeletal collection from Syria (circa 2900 – 1900 BCE) was contaminated by microbial growth (also known as biodeterioration) during curation. This biodeterioration was evaluated by light microscopy (LM), by the application of a histological preservation index (HPI), and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All samples (n=192) were found to be biodeteriorated by LM and the HPI. SEM confirmed that the Tell Leilan skeletal material had been contaminated by a complex microbial aggregate known as a biofilm. Amycolatopsis sp. and Penicillium chrysogenum, along with species of Aspergillus, Chaetomium, and Cladosporium were isolated and cultured from several contaminated bones and were identified based on morphology and DNA sequences. The results of this research suggest that we must focus on new techniques to examine bone as well as on new conservation protocols designed to limit the growth of biofilms in human skeletal collections in the future.
