Studies in the letters of Synesius

Runia, David Theunis January 1976 (has links) (PDF)
Like so many others before me, I have been drawn to the study of private letters. Time-bound, often highly stylized, yet they always remain personal writings, uncannily capturing our interest. (For complete abstract open document)

Le "Discours sur la royauté" de Synésios de Cyrène et l’idéologie impériale byzantine aux Ve et VIe siècles / Synesius' "De regno" and Byzantine Imperial ideology during the Vth and Vlth centuries

Alvino, Maria Consiglia 20 October 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is the analysis of the influence of Synesius’ De regno on the development of political theory during the Vth and VIth centuries. Firstly, the definition of Synesius’ political ideology in the context of his neoplatonic and christian Alexandrian paideia is taken into account. In order to understand the role played by Synesius’ De regno in the transmission of ancient political topoi, an investigation on some representative proto-byzantine works on political science (Procopius Gazaeus’ Panegyricus to the Emperor Anastasius, Agapetus’ Advice to the Emperor, the anonymus Dialogue on Political Science and John the Lydian’s On powers, or, The magistracies of the Roman state) is proposed. The conclusions try to focus on the impact of Synesius’ De regno in the evolution of proto-byzantine political theories and rhetorics during the Vth century up to Justinian’s times thanks to the individuation of quotations, allusions and literary patterns of continuity in the works previously analysed.

Initial Results using GPS Navigation with the Foerster Magnetometer System at the World Heritage Site of Cyrene,Libya.

Gaffney, Christopher F., Gaffney, Vincent L., Cuttler, R., Yorston, R. January 2008 (has links)
no / This Short Report summarizes some initial results using real time GPS to navigate and collect magnetometer data using Foerster sensors and a magnetic cart. The Foerster system is primarily aimed at the detection of buried ordnance and, by comparison to some other magnetometer sensors, the reported sensitivity is relatively low. However, the sensors require no alignment in the field, nor does the system require a regular contiguous grid to be established across the survey area. The latter means that data grids of different sizes and orientation can be measured and stitched together as part of data restoration prior to processing. The accurate positioning of the data means that `staggering¿, which is often seen in time-based collection strategies, is not apparent in the data; overall less processing is required to produce a final image than is required for other fluxgate instruments. Data from a survey at Cyrene are reproduced to illustrate the strengths of the system

Kollektive Identitäten in der antiken Kyrenaika / Collective Identities in Ancient Cyrenaica

Golinski, Peter 27 July 2016 (has links)

J.-C.) / Cyrene, colony and capital city. The Mediterranean fate of a city on the borders of the Greek world (VIIth – Ist century B.C.)

Berthelot, Hugues 25 November 2016 (has links)
The city of Cyrene provides different faces depending on the perspective adopted to consider it : it is both a colony and a metropol, both the capital city of Cyrenaica and a mere city in the Hellenistic kingdom of the Ptolemies, both a city situated on the borders of the Mediterranean world and a city whose presence incontinental Greece and in Aegea is clear.Since the previous studies focused on the city’s political history and the transformation of the urban landscape, we intend in this work to study the evolution of the city’s status from its foundation in 631 B.C. by colonists fromThera to its gift by Ptolemy Apion to the Roman Republic in 96 B.C., by focusing on the relations which it maintained with the rest of the Greek world : we searched then Cyrene and the Cyrenaeans outside of their city, foreign objects and foreigners inside the city, relying on epigraphical, numismatical, papyrological and archaeological data.Organised in three parts which coincide with the three major phases of Cyrenaean history, this work investigates the economic, diplomatic and cultural relations between Cyrene and the other Greek cities and strives to detect the main trends of those and to measure their influence on the city itself.

Quarta pítica de Píndaro : tradução e comentário analítico / Fourth pythian of Pindar : translation and analitical commentary

Rezende Silva, Alfredo Manoel de, 1982- 24 August 2018 (has links)

Por fim, sugere em análise uma nova interpretação da colometria deste epinício / Abstract: The Fourth Pythian Ode of Pindar is an epinicion of peculiar formal structure. The dissertation provides its text and a translation into Brazilian Portuguese, as well as an analytical commentary on the mythical section. The introduction is composed by a compilation of poetic excerpts and fragments prior to the Fourth Pythian in the argonautic cycle. Next, a commentary on the Pindar's mythic narrative proposes the distinction of the two major blocks, separated not only by thematic aspects, as evidenced by the tradition, but also by formal aspects, revealed by an analysis of their structures and, sporadically, by comparative method. This work demonstrates the procedure for ring-composition in the first block and compares the second to a heroic balladry. Finally, the dissertation suggests a new interpretation of this epinicions colometry / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

Missionaries' impact on the formation of modern art in Zimbabwe : a case study of Cyrene and Serima art works

Zhou, Grace 11 1900 (has links)
Focusing on Cyrene and Serima art workshops under the tutelage of Paterson and Groeber, respectively, the study acknowledges the foundational importance of Christian art (from the late 1930s up to the 1960s) in the rise of prominent first generation artists in Zimbabwe such as Mukomberanwa, Ndandarika, Khumalo, Songo, Sambo and many others. It rejects perceptions of African modernism as inauthentic imitations of artistic innovations that originated with European art. While accepting that there was a deliberate fusion of traditional art into mission mainstream education to produce Christian art forms with a strong Africanised identity, the study reveals missionaries’ conservatism and restrictions on artistic freedom. It, therefore, locates the formation of modern art in Zimbabwe largely within a broader spectrum of Africans’ encounter with colonialism or western culture which induced artists to invent new artistic expressions reflecting their own emergent political and socio-economic circumstances. The novelty and outright rejection of missionary impact are, therefore, alien to the natural synthesis that informed artistic modernism in Zimbabwe. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Art History)
