An ad for success: a case study exploring one woman’s higher education and professional paths that led her to leadership in creative departments dominated by men

Olsen, Katie Rose January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Special Education, Counseling and Student Affairs / Christy D. Craft / The purpose of this study was to explore how one woman negotiated an educational and professional path that led to leadership within the advertising industry’s creative departments, where most of the leadership positions are held by men. This qualitative study was conducted using purposeful sampling, as the single participant represented a truly unique situation in that she held the title of Executive Creative Director at a top advertising agency by the age of 33. Through The 3% Movement, it was identified that less than 12% of advertising’s creative directors are women (2017), and it was this stark gender gap that served as the impetus for exploring this woman’s experiences. A case study design was used to explore her experiences throughout childhood, higher education, professional school, and finally as a professional, in order to understand her path in a deep and meaningful manner. The theoretical framework for this study was based on a feminist perspective using social role theory (Eagly, 1997). A participant-created childhood timeline, three in-depth interviews, two writing responses, and a photo and object elicitation session served as the primary sources of data. The data were analyzed and coded using in-vivo and descriptive coding, as well as pattern-finding, over two cycles of coding and analysis (Saldaña, 2016). The data were used to answer the study’s two overarching research questions, and the following three themes were identified: 1) the power of a woman’s influence; 2) developing passion for leadership and creativity; and 3) promoting a strong work-life balance. The findings indicate that women must have support systems in place in order to successfully manage life as mothers and creative directors. Recognizing one’s own leadership and creative skills, and constantly working to provide the best team environment, were also recognized as key to moving forward in leadership positions within advertising’s creative departments. Agencies must establish policies and procedures to support both men and women as they manage a work-life balance, and it is even more important for leaders to set a positive example for those working around them. Finally, educating everyone holding authority within creative departments about the gender gap can increase awareness and provide the knowledge needed to support women. The findings of this study have implications for a variety of entities impacting women and their creative careers, from faculty and those involved with co-curricular activities in both high school and in higher education, those pursuing post-graduate advertising portfolio school, and those creative directors and agencies that do not reflect the goals of The 3% Movement in reducing the gender gap. Recommendations for future research include additional case studies exploring women creative directors and their paths to leadership, analyses of agencies’ policies and procedures impacting women, promotional processes of advertising’s creative departments, and further cross-case analyses of both women creative directors and various agencies representing different stages of diversity within the creative departments.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / TThe Bianchi groups Γd = PSL2(Od) with d > 0 square-free integer, where Od is the ring of integers of the field Q(p√(-d)), are important because their applications in Geometry and Number Theory. The conjugacy separability property is important because as noted by Mal´cev in 1958, the conjugacy problem for finitely presented conjugacy separable groups is soluble. In 1998, Wilson and Zalesski showed that d is conjugacy separable for d = 1; 2; 7; 11 and they conjectured that all Γd are conjugacy separable. In the thesis was proved that Γ3 is conjugacy separable. Combining with previous results this shows that all Euclidean Bianchi groups are conjugacy separable.

If the emphasis today on the ideals of the Enlightenment (Aufklärung) supplied by modernity is considered a step backwards before our reality post-modern, Zizek sees the challenge of reintegrating such principles in philosophical scenario today in a very special way. His merit consists basically to approach the kernel of the contemporary question (in terms of science, ontology, subjectivity and politics) from the ideal modern that opens up the prospect of emancipation and human freedom. Our work has, therefore, as task to explore this theme of freedom in current times, in what Kant understood with the principle of Aufklärung, namely, the leaving of man of minority, of which he himself is guilty. In this sense, the theme will be divided into four main thematic areas: (i) science and epistemology, (ii) ontology, (iii) subjectivity and (iv) emancipatory politics. On the first point it is discussed the ideal of Aufklärung for Zizek and how it contrasts directly with the perspective of Habermas and his project of a unfinished modernity. For this, we take as a guide the controversy on the subject of biogenetic, and, from then on, we look for to demonstrate as that the conception of modernity for Zizek is still more radical than that of Habermas. In the second chapter, we are seeking to develop how Zizek justifies the ontological basis of freedom from the passage from Kant to Hegel. The focus is deposited in the parallax shift of epistemological obstacle in Kant, for his positive ontological condition, in Hegel. That is, the way as Hegel radicalizes the Kantian thought from a twist purely formal dialectic. In the third chapter, the prospect of freedom is now shifted to the field of subjectivity, the dialectical relation between the Kantian moral Law and the sadistic enjoyment. In this direction, I look for to show first as that Lacan articulates Kant with Sade, then think about how that the psychoanalyst seeks an outlet for the principle of Kantian freedom from the Law of desire, which allows us to think a Kant without Sade. In the room and last chapter, step for a discussion properly politics, where I question as one truly emancipatory politics is possible, linked to the idea of class struggle and political act. In each treated point, we strive to radicalize the principle of human freedom in its materialistic basis. The interesting approach in the dialectical materialism of Zizek is that, at any time, it is replace our reality by another better, but only - and this is crucial - radicalize what remains in potentia in ours.

AUTONOMY SUPPORT: MODERATING STEREOTYPE THREAT IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS

Nadler, Dustin Ryan 01 December 2011 (has links)
This study examined the role of autonomy support (AS) in the relationship between stereotype threat (ST) and performance on a subset of the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) using a 2 x 2 factorial design. It was hypothesized that: 1. There would be significantly fewer correct answers in ST conditions compared to non-ST conditions, 2. There would be a significantly higher number of correct answers in AS conditions compared to non-AS conditions, 3.The relationship between ST conditions and performance would be moderated by AS conditions 206 African American college students from a mid-sized Midwestern university participated in the study. Performance, measured by the overall number of correct items answered from a set of 14 problems from the RSPM and also difficult and easy subsets of these problems, was the dependent variable and participants also completed a survey. Participants in ST conditions performed better than those in non-ST conditions. There was no difference in performance for participants in AS and non-AS conditions. High academic identified participants in AS conditions performed significantly better than similar participants in non-AS conditions on all items. Low academic identified participants in ST conditions performed better than those in non-ST conditions, only on easy items. These results provide information on the role of AS and item difficulty in stereotype threat situations.

Internal Performance Benchmark : -Cost Gap Analysis between painting processes / Intern Prestandajämförelse : - Kostnadsanalys mellan två måleriprocesser

Rosell Sagrelius, Simon January 2018 (has links)
Scania OmniExpress Busproduction Finland Oy in Lahti, a company that manufactures buses of product family Scania Interlink LD, Scania Interlink MD, Scania Interlink HD and Scania Citywide LE Suburban. As Scania receives larger customer orders, these orders are divided into both Scania Production Słupsk S.A. and Scania OmniExpress Busproduction Finland Oy, which bring a desire to harmonize these factories. To achieve this harmonization an investigation is required of Scania OmniExpress Busproduction Finland Oy analysis process and comparison with Scania Production Słupsk S.A. To keep up the permanent development outcome, Strategic Plan Scania Production Lahti requires a survey of the painting process in Lahti, Finland. Based on this, an internal cost performance benchmark has been implemented between the factories. Through a currant status analysis of both facility’s, based on Strategic Plan Scania Production Lahti methods and strategies, as well as complementing this with external methods and theory, the gap between the factories has been conducted from a cost perspective. Based on the more in-depth analysis made in Scania OmniExpress Busproduction Finland Oy, an improvement work has been carried out. / Scania OmniExpress Busproduction Finland Oy i Lahti, tillverkar idag bussfamiljerna Scania Interlink LD, Scania Interlink MD, Scania Interlink HD och Scania Citywide LE Suburban.

Identifying the finance skill sets needed for a large multi-national agricultural company agricultural company

Daesch, Nanci January 1900 (has links)
Master of Agribusiness / Department of Agricultural Economics / Allen M. Featherstone / The world is an ever-changing place with many demands on both companies and their employees. Finance individuals in a large multi-national company also have many demands placed on them as they grow and develop with the companies in which they work. A detailed analysis was performed on one large multi-national company in the agriculture sector to determine: 1. a framework to assess the skills that finance individuals need, 2. the desired skills and needs of the finance organization, 3. a current assessment of finance experiences and skills, and 4. the gaps between the current state and the desired skill level state. Although there are a number of criteria and competencies that can be used for assessment, this thesis focused on the critical skills and experiences for two key areas: 1. accounting and technical skills, and 2. analytical and business acumen skills. Skill set levels were measured at three criteria levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The desired state of the organization and the current state of the organization was defined and mapped on a Skill Set Grid and gaps were identified. When looking at the results, the data indicate that Company XYZ has several areas to explore further and refine. There were many gaps in the current state of the skill sets versus the desired state of the skill sets in both the areas of accounting and technical skills and analytical and business acumen skills. Further, the analytical and business acumen skills were significantly in need of further improvement. In addition, several areas of further refinement could occur that would further enhance the use of this skill assessment methodology. However, both the company and the employees who received feedback valued the information developed in this process.

Värdet av kundklubbar : En fallstudie på ett fast fashionföretag / The value of reward programs

Häger, Anna, Carlberg, Emelie January 2017 (has links)

Soares, Ana Caroline Silva January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The maturation of the cumulus oocyte complex (COC) is triggered by the ovulatory LH surge in vivo, and precociously induced when the COC is removed from the follicle. Natriuretic peptide type C (NPPC) plays a central role in maintaining meiotic arrest in vivo and delays GVBD while increasing oocytecumulus communication during IVM in cattle. In this study we first tested the hypothesis that follicular steroids (estradiol, progesterone and androstenedione) combined with FSH at approximately physiological levels cooperate with NPPC to delay GVBD and to maintain oocyte-cumulus communication. Then, we assessed the effects of follicular steroids, NPPC and the combination of both in a pre-IVM culture followed by IVM induced with AREG on embryo production. Follicular steroids combined with NPPC was most effective in increasing the proportion of GV oocytes in Bos indicus, although follicular steroids did not significantly enhance the effect of NPPC in Bos Taurus. . Moreover, follicular steroids enhanced the ability of NPPC to increase the proportion of COCs with opened GAP junctions. The addition of follicular steroids and/or NPPC to a pre- IVM culture did not alter blastocyst production after IVF. In conclusion, the combination of follicular steroids with NPPC can alter GVBD dynamics and cell communication favorably to oocyte developmental competence, but when used in a pre-IVM culture followed by induction of COC maturation with AREG and IVF, it did not increase e... As medidas... / Wide bandgap semiconductor materials are of great interest due to the broad range of their technological applications. Among the wide bandgap semiconductor GaN stands out due to its desirable characteristics for such aplications as the value of energy bandgap of 3.4 eV, high thermal conductivity and high hardness. Conventional techniques for producing GaN thin films are the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and chemical vapor deposition of metalorganinc precursors (MOVPE), nevertheless these are high techniques. This work brings into focus the preparation and characterization of polycrystalline GaN films by the alternative technique of reactive RF magnetron sputtering with different temperatures and substrates. The effects of varying theses two parameters on structured and optical properties of these films were analysed. Therefore, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, optical transmittance in the ultraviolet/visible/infrared, and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) were used to characterize the samples. The results show that temperature, substrate type, and substrate orientation influence the texture, morphology and optical properties of the films. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the orientation texture of films is influenced by the substrate used only at high substrate temperature (Ts>500ºC). This evidences a tendency of epitaxial growth. Besides, the atomic force microscopy at temperature above 500ºC showed that the surface morphology is different for amorphous and crystalline substrates. It also became evident that the decrease of deposition rate and bandgap of the films with increasing deposition temperature is possibly due to nitrogen deficiency by the high rate of desorption at these temperatures. In addition, measurements of trasmisttanc in the infrared Fourier Transform indicated the presence... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
