The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the function of connexin-36 (Cx36) gap junctions (GJs) in producing alcohol's intoxicating and rewarding effects. GABA neurons are thought to inhibit dopamine (DA) neurotransmission in the mesocorticolimbic system, which originates in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) and projects to limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). The mesolimbic DA system is believed to be the neural substrate of alcohol intoxication and addiction (Tepper, Paladini, & Celada, 1998). Alcohol suppresses the firing rate of GABA neurons in the VTA (Gallegos, Criado, Lee, Henriksen, & Steffensen, 1999) and presumably disinhibits DA neurons thereby resulting in enhanced release of DA in the NAcc. Interestingly, VTA GABA neurons appear to form part of a larger syncytium of GABA neurons in the reticular formation that are linked by electrical synapses via Cx36 GJs (Allison, et al., 2006; Stobbs, et al., 2004; Lassen, et al., 2007). Gap junction blockers, including the Cx36-selective antagonist mefloquine, also suppress the excitability and electrical coupling of VTA GABA neurons (Stobbs, et al., 2004). Thus, I hypothesized that Cx36 GJs cause synchrony in VTA GABA neurons which alcohol blocks to cause intoxication and reward. To accomplish these studies I compared the effects of intoxicating doses of ethanol in Cx36 knockout (KO) mice and mefloquine-treated mice and their wild-type (WT) controls with two tests that index ataxia, an open field activity system and the fixed-speed rotarod apparatus, as well as with ethanol self-administration. I found that Cx36 KO and mefloquine-treated mice exhibit significantly more ethanol-induced loss of movement in the open field test, a paradigm which indexes gross motor activity and tremor, but less ataxia than their WT controls in the rotarod paradigm, a paradigm which indexes balance and coordination. Most importantly, both Cx36 KO and mefloquine-treated mice consumed less ethanol than their controls. These findings provide evidence in support of the hypothesis that Cx36 GJs are important targets for ethanol effects in the mesolimbic system.

With the increasing feminization of the legal profession in the United States over the last half century, past research has documented the prevalence and transformation of gender inequality in law firms. However, relatively little is known about gender inequality in small, conservative legal markets like Utah. This thesis examines data from the 2008-2009 Utah Attorney Advancement and Retention Survey. The analyses indicate that relative to their male colleagues, women earned less in 2007 and are less likely to procure higher quality job assignments than their peers. The most promising explanations for these disparities include employment sector, gender and motherhood statuses, and year of bar admittance. Contrary to the results of past work, analyses find little or no effect for several traditional predictors of gender gaps including marital status, mentoring, tokenism, firm size, and hours billed. Open-ended responses reveal that while overt discrimination exists to some degree in Utah firms, most inequitable treatment has taken on subtle forms such as exclusion from the "good old boys" network, perpetuation of traditional gender roles and stereotypes, and differential opportunity paths and structures.

Redovisning av koldioxidekvivalenter på produktförpackningar har blivit vanligare i takt med att hållbarhetsfrågor blivit mer aktuella. I uppsatsen undersöktes CO2-ekvivalentredovisningens påverkan på konsumenters attityd mot varumärken utifrån de fem parametrarna: koppling tillCSR, transparens, identifiering, etisk och politisk konsumtion samt igenkännbarhet. Studien delades upp i två delar, genom den ena undersöktes respondenternas attityd tillCO2-ekvivalentmärkningen och dess påverkan på varumärkessynen. I den andra delen undersöktes respondenternas faktiska köpbeteende. I studien intervjuades sammanlagt 17 respondenter på pendeltåget mellan Uppsala och Stockholm. Studiens resultat pekade på bristande kännedom om CO2-ekvivalentmärkningens existens och siffrornas betydelse. Det framgick även att få individer jämför utsläppssiffror mellan olika produkter. De vanligast förekommande av de fem parametrarna som undersöktes var transparens, identifiering samt etisk och politisk konsumtion. En positiv attityd mot CO2-ekvivalentmärkningen hängde enligtundersökningen ihop med köpbeteendet, vilket pekade på att ett attityd-beteende-gap inte var rådande.

The Academic Achievement Of African-american Students In Orange County Public High SchoolsAdams, Athena 01 January 2008 (has links)
The study was conducted to determine the disparity between the academic achievement of African American students and the academic achievement of white American students in the state of Florida, and more specifically, in five high schools in Orange County Public Schools. The term "African American" included all students who self-identified as that race upon enrollment into an Orange County public school. The study included male and female African American students from different socio-economic levels. The term "differences in academic achievement" is most commonly referred to as "achievement gap." Additionally, this study sought to determine the relationship, if any, in the achievement of African American students' academic achievement in five high schools in Orange County Public Schools, Orlando, Florida. In addition, the purpose was to identify differences in achievement level based upon the school attended, gender, socio-economic levels, class size, and qualifications of the teachers. The methods and procedures used to determine if there was an achievement gap between African-American and white American high school students was to review: (a) gain in African-American students on the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, from the 2003-2004 administration to the 2004-2005 administration in five Orange County public high schools, (b) difference between African-American students' 2004-2005 reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test percentage at proficient (level 3 and above) and white American students in five public high schools in Orange, (c) the relationship between African-American students' 2004-2005 reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test percent at proficient (level 3 and above) and the school poverty rate in all public high schools in Orange County, (d) the characteristics of schools making gains in reading. There were four conclusions based on the review of literature, as well as the data collected from the five high schools. Under the provision and penalties attached to the No Child Left Behind legislation, there was a noticeable gap in achievement between African-American students and their white American counterparts in each of the examined schools over a two year time period. In schools with a greater percentage of white students, African-American students, overall, performed at a higher level. The achievement gap was narrower and the percent at proficient and above was higher for all students in schools where white students represented a greater percentage of the students. In schools with a lower percentage of students on free and/or reduced lunch, the percent of students reading at proficient or above was higher and the achievement gap was less between African-American students and their white counterparts. Furthermore, the data indicated that as the percent of students on free and reduced lunch at a given school increases, the rate of those reading at proficient and above for African-American students was lower. In schools with a wide array of diversity, students overall have higher achievement scores. Based on the data in the study, the school with the highest rate of student proficient and above, was the school with the greatest diversity population of students.

Achievement Gaps Throughout The Education Pipeline: Tracking The Trends Before And After The Florida Education Governance Reorganization Act Of 2000Emas, Rachel 01 January 2009 (has links)
To assess the effectiveness of the Florida Education Governance Reorganization Act of 2000, I analyze the achievement gaps across different levels of the education pipeline: elementary, secondary, and postsecondary. This paper evaluates three objectives of Florida's new system: strengthening of foundation skills, improvement of college and career readiness, and the expansion of opportunities for postsecondary degrees, by asking: Has the introduction of a PreK-20 seamless system in Florida reduced the educational achievement gaps between students, compared to Texas, which has not instituted a seamless system? At the elementary level, the analysis looks at 4th and 8th grade National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) average scale scores, from 1998 to 2007, of White, African-American, and Hispanic students and those students eligible and ineligible for the National School Lunch Program. At the secondary level, a comparison is made between the Advanced Placement passing rates of White, African-American, and Hispanic students from 1997 to 2008. At the postsecondary level, this paper examines the proportion of professional, master, and doctoral degrees awarded to White, African-American, and Hispanic students from 1995 to 2007. Results show that although Florida has raised the level of achievement for White, African-American, and Hispanic students in the past ten years, disparities between these groups still exist in NAEP scores, AP passing rates, and the proportion of graduate degrees conferred. Therefore, while the state has made progress towards its three goals, achievement gaps still remain in several levels of Florida's PreK-20 education system.

Closing the academic achievement gap: Perceived responsibilities and practices of site level administrators from high -achieving, high poverty schoolsGonzales, Michael V. 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The academic achievement gap in the State of California has been a persistent problem. In California the achievement gap is defined as the disparity between the academic performance of white students and other ethnic groups as well as that between English learners and native English speakers, socioeconomically disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities as compared with students without disabilities (CDE, P-16, 2008, p. 11). Jack O'Connel, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, has identified closing the achievement gap as one of the primary goals for the State of California. Research has consistently shown that children of color and children of poverty have not experienced the academic success of their white peers. Utilizing the meta-analysis of research data from Mid-continent Research for Educational Learning (McREL), this study is a quantitative review of the 21 Leadership Responsibilities and Best Practices identified by school leaders from Ceres Unified School District, more specifically, from leaders in nine high-achieving schools within the district. The nine identified schools and leaders have experienced academic success with children of color and children of poverty based on their Academic Performance Index Similar Schools Rankings. In the study, two levels of surveys were conducted. The first survey reviewed the leadership responsibilities identified by McREL and asked the study participants to rank the leadership responsibilities based on the responsibilities that they perceive to have the most significant impact on student academic achievement. Employing the results of the first survey, a second survey utilized the top five leadership responsibilities identified by the study participants. Under the umbrella of the top five responsibilities, five best practices were listed and again ranked by the participants based on their perceptions of the leadership practices that have the greatest effect on increasing student achievement. The results of this survey identified the best practices perceived by leaders of high-achieving, high poverty schools. Additionally, a questionnaire was completed by the participants to provide additional demographic data. The study results support the findings that best pedagogical practices are complimented by effective leadership. Effective leaders and leadership practices do have a positive effect on student academic achievement.

Phenomenal AcquaintanceTrogdon, Kelly 01 September 2009 (has links)
Chapter 1 of Phenomenal Acquaintance is devoted to taking care of some preliminary issues. I begin by distinguishing those states of awareness in virtue of which we’re acquainted with the phenomenal characters of our experiences from those states of awareness some claim are at the very nature of experience. Then I reconcile the idea that experience is transparent with the claim that we can be acquainted with phenomenal character. In Chapter 2 I set up a dilemma that is the primary focus of the dissertation. In the first part of this chapter I argue that phenomenal acquaintance has three key features, what I call its ‘directness’, ‘thickness’, and ‘infallibility’. In the second part I argue, however, that it’s really quite puzzling how thoughts about phenomenal character (or any thoughts, for that matter) could have them. In the next two chapters I consider how we might resolve the dilemma described above. I begin in Chapter 3 by considering an account of phenomenal acquaintance inspired by Bertrand Russell’s discussion of acquaintance. The general idea here is to excise mental representation from phenomenal acquaintance, and I ultimately reject the proposal. Chapter 4 is the core chapter of Phenomenal Acquaintance. In it I propose an account of phenomenal acquaintance that doesn’t excise mental representation. My account is comprised of three theses. First, token experiences are complex and have instances of phenomenal properties as components. Second, instances of phenomenal properties are mental representations, and they represent themselves. Third, the attention relevant to phenomenal acquaintance is underwritten by self-representation. I argue that my account explains how phenomenal acquaintance is direct, thick, and infallible, thereby resolving our dilemma. I argue in Chapter 5 that my account of phenomenal acquaintance explains why there is an explanatory gap between the phenomenal and non-phenomenal truths. Accordingly, I conclude that the explanatory gap doesn’t pose a problem for physicalism. Here I implement what has come to be called the ‘phenomenal concept strategy’ for responding to the challenge posed by the explanatory gap.

Strategic planners in retail banks are increasingly challenged to improve productivity, ensure high service quality and reduce operations costs while implementing their e-service strategy. This work aims to assess the current e-service operations strategy in the bank sector in Jordan and develop a framework for formulating e-banking strategies using gap analysis.
Limitation of resources is hindering the shift from the current situation of the bank sector to a point where both the customer and the bank perspectives are fully matched and the gap between them is zero. If the available resources of the bank sector are utilised properly, the bank sector can move to a position near to that point which is closer to the customer requirements than the current situation. This can be achieved by constructing a model for an e-bank, the ¿Composite bank¿, which represents the industry best practice. Its performance captures the capabilities, resources and competences of the bank sector.
A representative sample of the bank¿s customers was interviewed to fulfil a fully structured questionnaire based on the extant literature. Targeted managers in the bank

sector were then interviewed and completed a fully structured questionnaire based on the customer questionnaire. Both questionnaires were pre-tested to assure validity and reliability.
The data analysis method was based on gap-analysis technique. The gap model provides a tool to identify critical elements for successful implementation of operations strategy and suggests actions to deal with them. The gap analysis approach was proved to be useful in other settings, such as measuring service quality, but there is paucity of applications in e-service operations strategies.
An assessment tool and ¿working sheet¿ were delivered to pave the way for the strategic planners to assess the current situation of the e-banking strategy and to focus on the attributes/services which need more development.
This procedure can be generalised to be applied in other industries (in service or e-service contexts), and other countries, both developed and developing.

NEUTRON SCATTERING STUDIES OF STRONG DYNAMIC CORRELATIONS IN UNCONVENTIONAL SUPERCONDUCTORS: LOOKING THROUGH THE HOUR-GLASS TO HYBRIDIZATION AND A SUPERCONDUCTING SPIN RESONANCEWagman, Jerod Justin 11 1900 (has links)
A series of neutron scattering studies of unconventional superconductors is presented.
These measurements are split into two parts. The first part considers the purely
magnetic scattering in low-doped $La_{2−x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$. This study is comprehensive and elucidates much of the doping and temperature dependence of the low energy magnetic
scattering in this system. It also clearly demonstrates that two dimensional incommensurate
magnetic order in this system forms at the expense of three dimensional
commensurate magnetic order. The remainder of the thesis is concerned with characterizing
and determining the physics underlying pronounced enhancements of the
inelastic scattering found to exist at 20 meV at equivalent two dimensional magnetic
zone centers in both $La_{2−x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$ and $La_{2−x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$. Arguments are presented to interpret these features as a result spin-phonon hybridization in 214 cuprate superconductors. The measurements also explore the temperature and doping dependence of these features, determining that the enhancements are largely insensitive to doping and only present parametric response at temperatures relevant for three dimensional
magnetic order in this system. In addition, the first evidence for a superconducting spin
gap in $La_{2−x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$ is presented. The implications of these findings are discussed. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis discusses a series of measurements using brand new state of the art facilities to re-examine the family of high temperature superconductors with the simplest structure. By taking advantage of these new facilities and applying their capabilities to a, relatively speaking, simpler material family, the goal is to try and learn more about what may be the cause of high temperature superconductivity - a magnetism based phenomenon with profound implications for energy efficiency, energy storage, diagnostic healthcare, quantum computing and much more. While many interesting effects were observed, two of the more important findings were observations that unify the physical descriptions of $La_{2−x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$ and $La_{2−x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$, as is necessary to have a truly universal understanding of high temperature superconductivity, and a detailed characterization we interpret as hybridization. It is clear from this work that any complete solution of superconductivity must also explain this part magnetic and part crystalline structural hybridization phenomenon.
