Dreams, disability, psychotherapy and supervision : "we are such stuff as dreams are made on"

Morrison, Jean Catherine January 2003 (has links)
In Chapter One, in the first three of six sections, I trace aspects of my professional journey - processes of experience, reflection and formation - which woven together have brought me to create this document. This doctoral study is the culmination of my professional life and in the first section I show how my professional growth and development has evolved naturally to this point. The second aspect has felt quite different, and more like a sudden forced hothouse growth. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would read neuropsychology to understand and enjoy them, but the evidence is there! As I wrote up my experience of the professional seminars in the third section I realised how effectively they had provided a strong organic framework - a cumulative support and stimulation as I was ready for it, complementing and permeating my thinking. In section four I outline the work I have achieved and sustained at doctoral level. In section five I set out the effect my work might have both in the profession of psychotherapy and for others in their lives and relationships. The final section looks at the limitations in my work and future possibilities for further research. In CHAPTER TWO I describe how I used the agency that employed me as an external trainer along with my private counselling and supervision practice and various contacts outside my work, to set up experiential learning projects for others through which I could collect the evidence I needed to study the symbols, metaphors and themes in the dreams of disabled people, and compare them with those of non-disabled people, including my own. I became deeply involved in the research process. I hope I convey my amazement in the discovery I made that the physically able self-representation in the dreams of disabled people which I and many others before me had thought to be an odd phenomenon, is as it is because it is exactly the same as that of non-disabled dreamers! Along the way towards that discovery I found other fascinating dream features that I have illustrated throughout the chapter. CHAPTER THREE looks at the relationships - the professional context in which dreams are explored. Few reports gave evidence that dreams had been discussed in them, but that in itself was not essential for my study. I wanted to understand what would be likely to happen to such relationships in this area of diversity, and what more might be needed for them to be safe enough for dream exploration. This chapter is a catalogue of pain and struggle, in total contrast to the delight and surprise of chapter two. It is a record of what others told me of their experience in counselling and supervisory relationships where there were disabled and non-disabled people working together. I found what I suspected I would find, and because I dreaded finding it and then revealing it to others, I set out to be sure of my facts. I looked at the issue from several sides, and by including visualisation I encountered it also in depth. The record combines and analyses material from twelve different data sets. My findings are in the area of the effects of the differing body image on the dyadic partner and the working relationship, and in the contrast between the practice of those with long experience in working in this field with those new to it. From these I draw the conclusion that this area of diversity in our profession needs much more help than is currently given in training courses. I set out what I believe are essential areas for exploration and growth for all who choose to work in this field, and trust that those who supervise practice in our profession will take them on board.

Orientador: Luise Weiss / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T15:14:36Z (GMT). This dissertation is to develop a theoretical and practical research on identity in contemporary society. Graphically exploring the theme of self-representation, research shows parallels between the produced handy work and other work that has been developed in the country and the world on the topic in question. The survey also includes questions relating to the experienced technical, transiting between printmaking and old photographic processes. The route of these techniques coincides with the history of the printed image, starting from the woodcut to experiment with film photography. About four hundred different impressions were made over a period of approximately two years in which all the images produced are self-portraits. From these impressions, it was possible to establish a dialogue between theory and practice, with each set of images corresponds to one or more issues raised during the research / Mestrado / Artes Visuais / Mestra em Artes Visuais

Wait, Let Me Take a Snap: Self-Representation and Identity in the Seconds of a “Snapchat”

Grobeck, Katherine 01 January 2015 (has links)
Through the use of the smart phone application, Snapchat, people use the features and abilities to express themselves and communicate with their friends. With the accessibility of mobile phones and the special features of a camera on each side, making the action of taking a selfie more efficient, the allure of the application is endless. The temporariness of the photos taken through Snapchat and the additional features users are able to include provide an opportunity for them to have control over what they distribute throughout social media. The project included a variety of Snapchats from over 10 different users of various ages from all over the world. With the given prompts, they delivered Snapchats to their best friends, classmates, or on their "My Story" as they wished. The decisions of who received the Snapchats and for how long, demonstrated the control these participants were able to have while using the application. This control allows for the opportunity to explore and define one's self identity and representation through a social media platform.

DET LYCKLIGA LIVET PÅ INSTAGRAM : En diskursanalys av influencers konstruerande av lycka / The happy life on Instagram – a discourse analysis of how influencers construct happiness

Rosén, Matilda January 2019 (has links)
Female influencers have during the last years reached great success on social media, they are popular and influential with a lot of followers who they have a close bond with. Therefore, they are frequently used as a third part of corporate marketing strategies. The content on social media have however been criticised for only presenting an edited and happy picture of life. Thereby, the purpose of this study was to analyse the five biggest influencers in Sweden and their self-representation concerning happiness on Instagram. More specifically to study how happiness is constructed discursively. The study was based on posts published during 2018 and was conducted through a discourse analysis inspired by Laclau and Mouffe, focusing on happiness as an empty signifier. The theoretical starting point of this essay was based on Ahmed´s (2010) argumentations about happiness, Gill´s (2007) understanding of postfeminism and Hochschild´s (2003) comprehension of feelings as a part of labour. The results showed that happiness was both expressed as a process and as a state of mind, where happiness either could be reached through change and improvement or by loving yourself just the way you are. The results also showed that happiness was used as a tool within their self-representation in order to market products and services. Furthermore, their relationships were constructed as an ideal for a happy life. Finally, setbacks and problems were expressed as an opportunity to grow and learn in order to experience greater happiness in the future.

This approach has as an object of reflection the elements that are relevant to the configuration of a narrative identity in autobiographical writing, the strategies that a writing centered on one's self resorts to in a certain area, in a certain time and in a certain language. We have established the common procedures in the rhetoric of our authors, such as the first memory, the family romance creation, the parents, the places of memory, the school days and the reading scene. Our perspective is presented as an inquiry on the procedures used in identity construction, taking into account that the scenes chosen by the writer elaborate the self-image that he wants to build
