Norrlin, Elice January 2017 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis is to qualitatively study how the argumentation appears in the museum debate from 2016 in the Swedish newspapers ”Svenska Dagbladet”, ”Dagens Nyheter”, ”Expressen” and ”Aftonbladet’” from a rhetorical perspective. Research was performed on two to three mounths worth of debate articles from 2016. The thesis has been analysed through both classic rhetorical analysis and from Norman Fairclough’s three- dimensional model in order to answer the questions as to how the argumentation was done in order to acutate the writers positions, which discources that was managing in the debate and how the writers treats the concepts ”identity policy” and ”standard criticism”. Based on the articles that the thesis analysed, I were able to draw certain conclusions. First, the debate concists of writers who argument from rhetorical style figures to persuade one another. Writers identify with each other alternatively exclude from each other, depending on the discourse they are belonging to. And the view of the museum plays a major role in debate, that contributes to the discourse belonging.

Where the line should be drawn : A study of the parliamentary debate regarding conservation policies and property rights during the second half of the 20th century

Sundvall, Samuel January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the subjects of conservation policies and property rights and how these two topics were discussed in relation to each other in the Swedish parliament during the latter half of the 20th century (1952–1998). How nature reserves were discussed in relation to the property rights of private forest owners is especially emphasized. The theoretical framework of the study is borrowed from the philosopher Ingemar Hedenius and further nuances and elaborates on the term property rights by dividing it into smaller constituent parts. Protocols from the Swedish parliament served as the primary sources for the study. Laws, bills and reports from different governmental committees were, however, also studied in conjunction with these protocols to contextualize and deepen the understanding of the subject matter. A qualitative text analysis was thereafter conducted to describe and analyze the gathered data. The results show that, generally, the right-wing parties tended to value property rights higher than the left-wing parties. The left-wing parties therefore also tended to value conservation policies higher than the right-wing ones. The liberal parties in the political center tended to value both property rights and conservation policies in an equal manner. All parties in the parliament did for the most part, however, agree that conservation policies to some extent needed to impede on certain property rights in order to be effective. It was rather to what extent that this was deemed acceptable that the parties had differing opinions. All parties, regardless of political affiliation, would also gradually focus more on political issues relating to conservation and environmental problems as time went on.

O discurso radiofônico: um estudo da argumentação e dos atos de fala / Radiophonic discourse: a study of argumentation and speech acts

Silva, Cleide Lucia da Cunha Rizerio e 22 November 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study refers to the debate in the radio, to characterize and relate it to the pragma-dialetical theory, by van Eemeren e Grootendorst (1983/ 2004), especially by means of argumentation and speech acts. This theory considers the importance of the speech acts in argumentative discussions as well creates the notions of critical discussions and a code of conduct for reasonable discussants. In order to apply this theory, we select a corpus of radio transmitted discourse: a show named \"Liberdade de expressão\" from CBN, with Heródoto Barbeiro, Carlos Heitor Cony and Artur Xexéo.

Re-Inventing German Collective Memory: The Debate over the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe

Kauffman, Karen C January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Peter H. Weiler / Coming to terms with memory of the Nazi past has been a long and challenging task for the German nation. An important part of this process was the debate over building a national Holocaust memorial in Berlin, called the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe. The debate began in 1989 and has arguably not yet ended. Occurring primarily in periodicals, political speeches and official colloquiums, the Denkmalstreit (memorial debate) was largely about German intellectuals developing a system of dealing with the Holocaust while redefining German identity in their own eyes and those of the world. The famous Historikerstreit (historian’s debate) of the 1980s raised the issues of the burden of shame and guilt on modern Germans, concern over forgetting the Holocaust, the uniqueness of the Holocaust and Jewish persecution, and the need to develop a new national identity. The Denkmalstreit dealt with these issues through the questions of whether to build a memorial and what it would mean, whether the memorial would be for descendents of perpetrators or victims, and what form the memorial should take. After closely examining these issues and the consensus the German intellectuals, politicians and artists reached in order to finally dedicate the memorial in 2005, I argue that Germany has done an exemplary job of coming to terms with the crimes of its past. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Current Status and Future Outlook of Geothermal Reinjection: A Review of the Ongoing Debate

Skog, Gabriella January 2019 (has links)
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source which has not yet had the same breakthrough as other renewables, e.g. solar PV and wind. There may still be some technical issues to be solved before geothermal can reach its full potential. One of these technical challenges concerns reinjection, i.e. the return of geothermal fluids back into the ground after surface energy extraction. In traditional geothermal energy utilization, hot geothermal fluid is brought up from underground reservoirs to the surface. Depending on the design of the power plant, the fluid can either be kept one-phased or get separated into two phases, i.e. hot steam and water. Hot steam, or vapor of another working fluid, is used to drive electricity generating turbines. Whether the condensate is returned back into to the ground after energy extraction, i.e. reinjected, is nowadays usually a matter of how rather than if. However, the magnitude and strategy varies in countries as well as for specific power plant operators. From a sustainable management perspective, the majority of operators as well as scientist agree that reinjection is the best way practice in order to take care of a resource and leave the smallest possible environmental footprint. However, it is a quite complicated and not always problem free operation. There are numerous examples where reinjection has led to complications such as scaling, induced seismicity and cooling of the reservoir. The purpose of this study was to describe the current status of geothermal reinjection from a neutral third-party perspective, e.g. by describing current obstacles and negative as well as positive outcomes. The aim is to conclude whether current technology is enough to successfully reinject, or if there are still some gaps of knowledge to fill. The method consists partly of a literature study of previously written technical reports but also of interviews with experts in the area. In addition, the study summarizes the legal framework regarding reinjection in some geothermal active countries, e.g. if it is required by law or not. Although currently technology is enough to do a fairly good job at reinjecting geothermal fluids, the result of the study also shows that there are still some technical barriers to overcome in order to fully optimize it. However, it remains the best currently known way to keep geothermal energy sustainable. Better technologies will be needed in order for geothermal to reach its fully green potential.

Critical debates that cover the different ways of understanding reality and include the voice of the other and the heterogeneity of the ways of being and thinking in a plural society. Critical debates involving the principles of plurality, identity, difference and diversity. I will try to answer this question investigating how the philosophy textbook develops its contents as a possibility that its readers, the high-school studentes, can develop critical debates about contemporary issues. I understand that the textbook can contribute to the students: i) develop their knowledge bases on possible understandings of reality; ii) develop plausible arguments through reasoning about possible understandings on reality in order to participate on critical debates; iii) make solidarity social proposals, based on respect for the values of the other and your different understandings of reality. Based on that understanding, I will undertake an interpretative investigation research in order to understand how the didactic book of philosophy for high-school, "Filosofia: experi?ncia do pensamento", philosophically develops the concepts of culture, plurality, identity, difference and diversity, and if that didactic-pedagogical development can help students to partipated on critical debates about contemporary social themes involving these concepts.

Referenciação e argumentação: a dinâmica nas orientações argumentativas em debates políticos televisivos / Argumentation and referentiation: the dynamic in the argumentative orientations in political media debates

Palumbo, Renata 17 March 2008 (has links)
This research investigated the referencial processes from the argumentative point of view, and observed, specifically, the occurrences of nominal expressions in political debates in the media. The corpus consisted of a political debate organized by Roda Viva, a program transmitted by TV Cultura of São Paulo, on July 15 2005, whose participants (politicians) were divided into two groups: the opposition, formed by PFL, PPS and PSDB members, and governmetalists, who belonged to the PT. The particular conditions of production of the participants´ discourses were described and the specific characteristics of both the support and the genre were observed. The analysis of the interaction between the participants was carried out in order to observe the linguistic selection that each one of them used to construct the textual referents, and to examine the argumentative orientation that was established in the referencial net. At last, we investigated how the argumentative orientations were constructed interactively by the groups, since they, in spite of having the same social role, took opposite stands. The adopted bibliographical references were: studies on the referentiation, in Mondada and Dubois (2003), Apothéloz (2003), Marcuschi and Koch (1998); reflections upon argumentation, in Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (1958, 2002), Charaudeau (2006) and Aquino (1997) stand out; inquiries on spoken language, specially concerning interaction questions, in Aquino, Fávero and Andrade (1998) and Marcuschi (2001).

The dynamics of German remembering : the Rosenstraße protest in historical debate and cultural representation

Potter, Hilary January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines patterns of German memory and identity construction as reflected in historical debates around the Rosenstraße protest in 1943 and cultural representations of it since 1990. It positions them within the wider context of debates in Germany on resistance on the one hand and shifting conceptions of national identity on the other. It argues that although the increase in public interest in the protest may appear to be a consequence of unification and the ensuing shift in coming to terms with the past, it in fact precedes them. Drawing on the work in cultural memory theory of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Benedict Anderson, Eric Hobsbawm and others, arguments about the social construction of memory and identity are employed to show how and why patterns of memory, attitudes and ideas about the Nazi past, as expressed through different media of memory, have shifted and how these are tied to conceptions of national identity. This thesis focuses first on debate amongst historians, before moving on to discuss popular history, biography, film and the different forms of memorialisation. It asks why the protest has become a more prominent feature of cultural memory since unification, and demonstrates that its increased currency is a product of trends in resistance historiography and in Holocaust discourses. It argues that cultural memories are multi-layered and developed in relation to one another. The interplay between these different media is therefore analysed, with particular attention given to who is involved in shaping memories of the protest and why, how these memories and surrounding debates have altered over time, and what this indicates about continuing impact of, and attitudes towards the past. This allows for a consideration of the multiple notions of national identity which these representations foster, and an exploration of how conceptions of identity influence what is remembered. The question is asked whether the Rosenstraße resistance narrative has, since the 1980s, facilitated the emergence of a more inclusive and a more nuanced remembering, particularly as this narrative highlights the complexities of opposition and attempts to integrate conceptions of Jewish and non-Jewish suffering, centring them within the one narrative. It asks whether these notions are juxtaposed, and whether either victimhood or German responsibility is relativised. The thesis explores how Germans’ relationship with Jews is reconfigured, how German-Jewish solidarity is foregrounded, who is represented as victim, and of what. At the same time, the extent to which a more hybrid sense of identity, one that transcends national and ethnic boundaries, is promoted through the representations of the Rosenstraße protest is also considered. Lastly, it is argued that the competing representations of events in Rosenstraße which are examined here exemplify the fraught, complex and politicised dynamics of Germany’s historical memory, which is characterised by tension between the wish for normalization and the desire to maintain a critical awareness of the past in which opposition may be recognised but accountability is not relativised. The thesis explores which view predominates and speculates whether this is likely to shift in the near future.
