Vztah mediálního zobrazení a historické pravdy na příkladu historického filmu a seriálu / The relation between Media Depiction and Historical Truth on the example of Historical Motion Picture and Television Series

Platoš, Filip January 2019 (has links)
Diploma thesis The relation between Media Depiction and Historical Truth on the example of Historical Motion Picture and Television Series deals with the relationship between official historiography and contemporary historical film or TV series. The work is based on a theoretical framework, which postulates Robert A. Rosenstone in several publications, especially in the book History on Film/Film on History. The American historian and film theorist is one of the most prominent supporters of the view that historical film must be seriously perceived not only as a historical artifact but also as a medium conveying the depiction of the past. Qualitative analysis was performed in the work of movies Masaryk, Lidice and the miniseries Hořící keř. In the first part of the work, they were compared with an institutionally recognized version of the past - specifically with secondary school textbooks with the approval clause of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic. In the following part, the film inventions were examined according to the theory of Rosenstone and finally according to the theory of fictional worlds according to the linguist Lubomír Doležel. The thesis aims to answer the hypotheses that state that the Czech historical film in historical key events coincides with the...

Obtíže při osvojování kresby u dětí v předškolním věku / Difficulties in drawing development in preschool age

Vyšínová, Pavlína January 2013 (has links)
Title: Difficulties in drawing development in preschool age Author: Pavlína Vyšínová Department: Department of Psychology Supervizor: PhDr. Miroslav Klusák, CSc. Abstract The submitted dissertation is focused on the observation of difficulties in the drawing development of preschool children. Drawing is a typical means of expression of a child, it is often considered as a spontaneous and natural activity. Nevertheless in the population of preschool children we may find some kids who do not draw at all, or they start to draw at a much later stage than it is common amongst the ordinary population, or they may also react negatively to drawing. Within this work a phenomenon in which the child's drawing distinctively does not correspond to his cognitive abilities due to the risk of a specific disability of drawing adoption (dyspinxia) or due to another crisis of imaging in the preschool age. The focus of the research lies in the processing of quantitative methods (intellectual abilities test, drawing tests), however additional information is also derived from the qualitative methods (anamnesis, interview, observation, essay). In the methodology a new evaluation system for the scoring of children's drawings regardless of the depicted theme is introduced. A part of the work also suggests an intervention for the...

Depiction of women by Sepedi poets from selected poems

Ramohlale, Motswiri Isaac January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M. A.(African Languages)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / This study focused on identifying and analyzing the perceptions of Sepedi poets on women. This qualitative, descriptive research was conducted to determine if there were any discrepancies between role perceptions and role expectations. Data was collected from texts (poetry books) in the form of poems that poems which portrays negative perceptions of poets on women. Poems were selected randomly and analyzed to expose their perceptions on women. The study has exposed the prejudices that were unfairly inflicted upon women through poetry. The findings revealed that there is a need to rehabilitate authors, poets in particular to write positive about women, perceive women as capable and gifted beings. If this social ill is left unattended, it may result in confusion and role conflict among members of the society, which can ultimately transgress the attainment of credible and aesthetic element of literary work.

Literary Depictions of Moors from Herodotus to Procopius

Russell, Daniel 02 December 2022 (has links)
The Moors have been regarded by Graeco-Roman authors with a mixture of ambivalence and admiration. From the highly positive characterizations of Moorish giants like Masinissa (238-148 BCE) whose achievements the Romans lauded, to figures like Jugurtha (fl. 118-104 BCE) and Gildo (fl. 396-398 CE) whose hostilities with Rome earned them both scorn and ridicule, Moorish figures loom large in the pages of ancient historians from Herodotus to Procopius. This thesis examines the shifting portrayal of Moors from their earliest literary depictions in Greek literary sources to the late Roman literary portrayals of the sixth century CE. It argues that certain stereotypes regarding Moors, a problematic term that will be discussed in greater detail, continued relatively unchanged in Graeco-Roman authors, and that this was highly dependent on genre, political context, and intertextuality. It further argues that negative vs. positive portrayals of Moors can be understood better via an examination of the context of an author on an individual level, where political background was key to an historian’s evaluation of a certain Moorish figure or of Moors in general.

Essay on the Linguistic Features in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Nygren, Åsa January 2006 (has links)

The literature on J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter is prolific. People have written on various topics dealing with issues such as translation, etymology and diverse areas concerning the language. In this essay, I examine whether linguistic features such as reporting verbs, adverbs of manner and adjectives contribute to the depiction of heroic and villainous characters. Before conducting this research, my assumptions were that there would be a great difference in the value of the words depending on the character they were associated with. I wanted to see if the heroic characters used verbs and adverbs with positive connotations, and the villainous characters verbs and adverbs with negative connotations. I also wanted to know if the adjectives describing the characters could, in themselves, clearly indicate whether a character was a hero or a villain.

The results of my research suggested that the choice of particular verbs and adverbs contributed only indirectly to the depiction of the characters. Without context, it was not possible to know if the character was a hero or a villain simply by identifying the verbs and adverbs used to describe their speech. By contrast, the choice of particular adjectives did appear to indicate more clearly whether a character was hero or villain. Finally, the results of my research indicated that context, rather than the use of particular linguistic features was often the most important factor in contributing to the portrayal of characters in the novel.

Avmystifieringen av det moderna barnet : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys ur ett semiotiskt perspektiv av två svenska Instagramkonton / The demystification of the modern child : A qualitative content analysis from a semiotic perspective of two Swedish Instagram accounts

Jivtegen, Simon, Petersson, Andreas January 2017 (has links)
Instagram accounts where parents are exposing their children are in today’s society a common sight as well as a popular phenomenon. This requires a depiction where the children are appealing in the eyes of the recipients. Our thesis will examining the phenomenon through an analysis of two well known swedish Instagram personalities being Penny Schulman and Naomi Ljungqvist and how they are depicted on Instagram. The goal is to implement the study with the help of a qualitative content analysis which has its base in semiotic theories. Through these theories we want to study the depiction of these children and how they relate to the - according to Barthes (1973), existing mythologies regarding children and family life. To be able to perform this study we will originate from Hallidays theories regarding agency in action, connotations and denotations and finally mythologies. The conclusion we reached was that both of the children have similar traits of character but with different suspension to the prevailing myths of children and family life. We find Penny Schulman to be more divergent from the traditional myth of children since she is acting more independent and not as a passive agent. Naomi Ljungqvist on the other hand is seemingly more dependent of her mother and therefore fit better into the traditional perception of children in a family context. Based on our analysis we can see clear differences in how the analyzed children are breaking from the traditional view of children as passive agents. In the analysed material we can see a new myth regarding family taking form where the children and their development is presented together with their adaption to adulthood.

”Women will never fight in the UFC” : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av kvinnlig MMA’s framställning i media / ”Women will never fight in the UFC” : A qualitative content analysis of the depiction of women’s MMA in media

Sehlstedt, Johan, Brodin, Benjamin January 2015 (has links)
”Never!” That was the answer UFC President Dana White gave when asked when women would be seen in the UFC. Two years later the first fight between two women took place and now there’s more than 50 female competitors in the UFC - an organisation that earlier was reserved only for men. ”Women will never fight in the UFC” – A qualitative content analysis of the depiction of women’s MMA in media is a study which focuses on how women’s MMA and Ronda Rousey as an individual athlete are portrayed in american internet based MMA media, with a gender research perspective. This study also investigates how the introduction of the first women’s division in the UFC might have affected the depiction women’s MMA in media. The theoretical framework consists of gender theory concepts such as gender performativity, the man as norm, sports and masculinity. With this theoretical framework as foundation, a directed content analysis was used as research method. The results of this analysis shows a frequent emphasis on the appearance of female athletes in the material. An attractive woman is preferable, and a muscular and more masculine woman is considered as deviant. Female athletes are constantly in comparison to male athletes, both in a positive sense, when their athleticism or talent is compared, and in a negative sense to downgrade their appearance. It is clear that the man is the starting-point, which the women are compared to. The material shows that before the introduction of a female division in the UFC there were strong concerns about women entering the organisation - would it be received as a positive or a negative change and thus if it was economically sustainable. After the first women’s fight in the UFC, the appearances of the competitors weren’t referenced as frequently in the material as before, and their performances were highlighted in a much higher degree. Ronda Rousey is portrayed as the most important individual competitor in women’s MMA. She’s got “everything”, both the looks and talent. But to some extent her talent is marginalized. A resistance that may be based in the unfamiliarity of seeing a woman in the spotlight of the MMA-world.

In his theory Goodman argues that resemblance taken as necessary and sufficient criterion to pictorial naturalism or realism is doomed. We must adopt the very notion of pictorial representation as a kind of denotation, part of semantic theories of reference and that works approximately as verbal descriptions for objects. I will argue that resemblance is no necessary and nor sufficient condition to guarantee a pictorial representation. The structure of this thesis will use these three main points: (a) Goodman's criticism for resemblance relationship as necessary and sufficient to pictorial realism or naturalism; (b) the criticism to naïve depiction theories and its relational uses of (a); and (c) I will analyze an idea of learning and symbolic construction for the resolution of (a) and (b).
