Stop : Creating universal design recommendations for modal windows as a responsible gambling strategyOttosson, Emil January 2019 (has links)
A lot of people like gambling. Even though it brings excitement, it has its dark sides as well. Problem gambling is a disease that destroys lives every day. As gambling are entering the digital domain, phenomenon such as E-sport has made it easier than ever to gamble. Therefore it is important to minimize the risk of gambling addiction among the users. At present time, as an attempt to make this possible, legislators have started to implement different rules on how companies need to deal with responsible gambling. A trend, that has become a problem, is that gamblers tend to not read warning messages that they get when they have been playing for a long period of time. This thesis is about producing recommendations for how to design these modal windows so that users actually take the time to read the information they receive. The methods used in this thesis are connected to the 6 phases of the design thinking process produced by Nielsen Norman Group and they were literature studies, interviews, prototyping and user testing. It was found that people with a previous gambling addiction wanted to see information about how much money they had spent in total on their account. That could also show more clearly how serious one's playing habits are. One cannot stop everyone from developing a gambling addiction, but one can give everyone a chance to become healthy.

Numerical and Experimental Investigations for Wind Uplift Force on Flat Roofing SystemDayani, Nima January 2016 (has links)
The development of the construction industry brought the new methods of structural design, which have been introduced to engineers, although overall this phenomenon has increased building costs. A cost-effective construction is one of the major decision points during the definition of any engineering project, therefore, due to the opposing concepts of these two statements, revising design standards and codes are essential in order to provide adequate and cost-effective design requirements.
A single-ply roof system is a relatively new method of roof construction that has been used in the building industry in recent decades, which seems to have undergone dramatic changes due to significant structural failures that have occurred through the years. Wind-induced damage on flat roofs is a common problem for low-rise buildings and much of this damage is initiated when the steel deck roof fails, leading to the overall roofing system collapse. The FM (Factory Mutual) design recommendations, which is a standard that recommends allowable dimensions and wind rating for the roofing products, have provided tabulated steel deck span dimensions and fasteners distance for many years. To update the FM design recommendations extensive experimental and analytical investigations are required. In the current study an experimental program was conducted at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) on flat roofing systems, for simulating the wind uplift effect on several roofing systems samples, as recommended by FM design recommendations.
A Finite Element Model (FEM) of the same roofing systems as those used in the experimental cases was developed and different loading patterns were analysed for providing a better simulation of the deflection, moments and forces responses, as measured during the experiments. The FEM was validated with the experimental results and was further employed for applying the FE analysis for more steel deck span dimensions and wind rating cases, as provided in the FM design recommendations tables.
These results were reported to the Single Ply Roof Industry (SPRI) Committee where the updating of the FM design tables is currently under discussion.

Interactive motorsports broadcasting in a virtual reality environmentJohansson, Marcus January 2019 (has links)
Interactive TV in motorsport, specifically Formula 1, is an established service that has been developed over the last 20 years. Market research reveals trends in broadcasting pointing towards, in the future, sports, in general, will be consumed via VR. Broadcasting interactive TV with VR acting as the medium, however, is an unfamiliar territory where a gap in research exists in interaction design. The purpose of this thesis is to research the viewing habits of inexperienced and experienced viewers of F1 through empirical work that includes literature review, observation and interviews. The insights gathered are then conceptualized through workshops and sketching. These, in turn, helps produce a set of iterated prototypes that are usability tested to extract insights which reveal design recommendations for ergonomics and interface and elements for augmenting the viewing experience the designer should keep in mind when developing for VR broadcasted interactive motorsport TV.

Whitewater Park Design Principles: An Integrated Approach for Multiple User GroupsLester, Byron 04 May 2012 (has links)
ABSTRACT
WHITEWATER PARK DESIGN PRINCIPLES:
AN INTEGRATED APPROACH FOR MULTIPLE USER GROUPS
Byron Lester Advisor:
University of Guelph, 2012 Professor Sean Kelly
Existing whitewater courses have several design issues relating to their ability to balance expert, novice recreational, and commercial use. The goal of this study is to establish a better understanding of whitewater park design that incorporates the needs of multiple user groups in one integrated approach. Through elite interviewing whitewater park design was investigated and the data was analyzed identifying seven design principles and thirty seven detailed design recommendations. These design principles and recommendations were applied to create a preliminary conceptual design of a whitewater park. The design recommendations and conceptual design were evaluated by a professional whitewater course designer. The evaluation revealed that adaptability is an important principle in whitewater park design and that design recommendations must be flexible to allow for client input and site constraints. This research expands our knowledge of multifunctional design of whitewater parks that resolves user conflicts and important functional relationships.

Prevention is better than cure! Designing information security awareness programs to overcome users' non-compliance with information security policies in banksBauer, Stefan, Bernroider, Edward, Chudzikowski, Katharina 17 April 2017 (has links) (PDF)
In organizations, users' compliance with information security policies (ISP) is crucial for minimizing information security (IS) incidents. To improve users' compliance, IS managers have implemented IS awareness (ISA) programs, which are systematically planned interventions to continuously transport security information to a target audience. The underlying research analyzes IS managers' efforts to design effective ISA programs by comparing current design recommendations suggested by scientific literature with actual design practices of ISA programs in three banks. Moreover, this study addresses how users perceive ISA programs and related implications for compliant IS behavior. Empirically, we utilize a multiple case design to investigate three banks from Central and Eastern Europe. In total, 33 semi-structured interviews with IS managers and users were conducted and internal materials of ISA programs such as intranet messages and posters were also considered. The paper contributes to IS compliance research by offering a comparative and holistic view on ISA program design practices. Moreover, we identified influences on users' perceptions centering on IS risks, responsibilities, ISP importance and knowledge, and neutralization behaviors. Finally, the study raises propositions regarding the relationship of ISA program designs and factors, which are likely to influence users' ISP compliance.

Embodiment in Online LARPing: Design Guidelines for Future LARP DesignersKhay, Nang Hseing Noom January 2022 (has links)
Online LARPing has been practiced for a long time, but gained its popularity as the Covid-19 pandemic hit. However, online platforms have some drawbacks and limitations in various aspects, for example, in embodiment, in accessibility, etc. This thesis aims to gain deeper insights into factors influencing players in terms of embodiment during online LARPing and important features that future online LARP designers should pay attention to. This thesis is a qualitative research aiming to create design guidelines through empirical investigations of online LARPing. For the empirical investigations, the study embraced an ethnographic approach through participatory observations, complimented by analysis of scripts and interviews with writers. The study then used the findings from the empirical investigations to understand what make players feel more embodied during an online LARPing and let the results inform the creation of design guidelines that could bring a higher degree of embodiment to online LARPing. The work is mainly a design proposal or a design guidance intended for future online LARP designers, instead of building a new technology or a new prototype. The design guidelines aim to create comprehensive recommendations to bring out more embodiment while LARPing online.

Mapping the Days: The relationship between the built environment in day-care centers and the spontaneous activities of people with dementiaHou, Congsi 14 September 2018 (has links)
This doctoral thesis focuses on the built environment of adult day-care centers (ADCs). It presents a mixed-method empirical research on six German ADCs with the purpose of understanding the relationship between their built environment and the spontaneous activities (SAs) of their care recipients with dementia.
Field observations, Space Syntax analysis and interviews are the methods of the research. They are used to analyze how the distributions and patterns of the SAs of people with dementia are in relation to the building layout, room function, social density, and spatial visibility and accessibility of the ADCs.
The research results suggest that the built environment in ADCs has influence on the distributions of SAs of people with dementia. In terms of building layout, it is revealed that the central space has a gathering effect on the location of SAs. In terms of room function, it is showed that more than 90% of SAs are distributed in the living room, the dining room, and the transition area/corridor. While no correlation is observed between the social density and the SA distribution, significant positive correlations are suggested between the spatial visibility and the SA distribution, as well as the spatial accessibility and the SA distribution. Moreover, furniture location is revealed to have an effect on the SA distribution through influencing the spatial accessibility.
The thesis discusses the research findings in comparison with other previous studies. In addition, practical recommendations for design of ADCs for people with dementia are provided with examples and illustrations.
