Student Perspectives on School Surveillance : an Explorative Study Using a Mobile Application Prototype

Persson, Anton, Eleyan, Ahmed January 2019 (has links)
Schools should be safe places for young people to learn through freely expressing and sharing ideas. This requires respecting student privacy, as they otherwise feel distrusted and uncomfortable. At the same time, surveillance is becoming an increasingly important part of facilitating a safe school environment. This has created an interesting dynamic where increasingly pervasive surveillance solutions seeking safety and other benefits are threatening student privacy. Therefore, researchers stand before the urgent challenge of figuring out what is a desirable direction for this technology. This qualitative study focuses on students’ perspectives on surveillance and privacy. Data was collected through interviews, card sorting, and the use of a prototype together with scenarios. The results of the study expand upon current research and reveal that actively involving students in design and research processes is important to ensure sustainable solutions. Students desire more value in terms of control, assistance, safety and information. At the same time, many concerns about discomfort, distrust and abuse are present. A set of guidelines on important considerations for future surveillance research and design are presented which focus on collaboration, responsibilityand creativity. Key issues causing inefficient communication between studentsand researchers are discussed, and the need for providing further education on the topic is motivated.

Design patterns for social sustainability in HCI : A study on destructive relationships on the use of design patterns

Lundqvist, Emelie January 2019 (has links)
In this paper, a study was conducted to explore social sustainability in HCI. The study focuses on people in destructive relationships and uses the notion of research through design to gain and share knowledge using design patterns. The study focused on creating methods for working more practically with social sustainability in HCI and used several design methods such as story share and capture to gain and share knowledge on the user group which was then presented in a pattern, consisting of a total of eight different patterns. The patterns was later tested with designers who suggested designs which users were then to rate from best to worst. The study show that design patterns can successfully be used to share knowledge, however the study also show some variation in how well design patterns are understood based on experience. Experienced designers tend to create better designs with the pattern than inexperienced. However, designers with the pattern designed better solutions than designers without regardless of experience.

Estudo da interação solo-geogrelha em testes de arrancamento e a sua aplicação na análise e dimensionamento de maciços reforçados / A soil-geogrid interaction study on pullout tests and its application on analysis and designing of reinforced soil structures

Teixeira, Sidnei Helder Cardoso 02 June 2003 (has links)
The knowledge of interaction mechanisms between soil and geosynthetics is fundamental for designing reinforced-soil structures. However, due the variety of surface geometry found in commercially available geosynthetics, the interaction between soil and inclusions can occur on different ways. For the geodrids, the pullout interaction mechanisms is the one that, in some cases, best represents the field situations. This thesis presents an analysis of the main factors influencing the soil-geogrid interaction during pullout phenomena, using large and small-scale test boxes, as well as an device that tests longitudinal and transversal geodrid elements isolated. Two numerical models for evaluating the pullout behavior of large geogrid samples using small-scale and on element tests are also presented. The results of different tests are compared, showing the viability of using small-scale tests for testing geogrids embedded in fine soils instead of large-scale tests, that demand large quantities of soil and labor to be done. On the penultimate chapter, a method for evaluating the maximum tensile effort of reinforced slopes and walls is presented. This method uses the results obtained from small-scale pullout tests and considers some important aspects as soil-geogrid interaction and reinforcement rigidity

Harnessing Children&#039 / s Creativity In Contextmapping Activities

Ozakar, Asli Deniz 01 August 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Recently developed co-design methods ask for users&rsquo / creative outcomes all through the design process. Designers are familiar with the creative process but users are not. The heuristic tasks given to users should reveal their creativity and harness it for high-quality outcomes. Contextmapping is a new co-design method following the same need as others / the method involves generative sessions in which users are asked to create artifacts communicating their needs and dreams about future products. Children are taking part in these processes and their involvement requires an understanding about their needs and abilities. Contextmapping with children has many aspects yet to be discovered, one of which is harnessing children&rsquo / s creativity during generative sessions. This forms the basis for this research. The thesis traces an overview of creativity, co-design with children, contextmapping with children and children&rsquo / s creativity. The literature review opens a new area for investigation about using competition, which is seen both detrimental and challenging for eliciting creativity from children, as a motivation during contextmapping activities. The empirical study is formed from six sessions aiming to find an answer to the effects of cooperation and competition on children&rsquo / s creativity during contextmapping sessions in regard to gender differences. The analyzed and discussed findings show that competition is a motivating element and has positive impacts on children&rsquo / s creativity, it increases children&rsquo / s motivation towards contextmapping tasks and the outcomes of the sessions are more appropriate to the expectations of the task.

Postmodernistinė visuomenė - iššūkis menininkų, kūrybos sferos darbuotojų, karjeros projektavimui / Postmodern society – challenge for career designing of artists and employees from creativity sphere

Šaškevičius, Ramūnas 04 July 2012 (has links)
Art, as one of leading spheres of human activity, plays the main role in human evolution. A modern art system, while collaborating with education system, creates the visions of future society. Artists are one of the main participants, related with art production and distribution, in aforementioned system. What is more, the profession of artists is interesting because of the fact that a part of young generation has an aversion to general established order, and possibility for radical artist to reduce the friction appears precisely in this medium. Improvement of unsuitable system is often radical, while an artist – a revolutionary player. However, the breakthrough of postmodern radicalism condemns the artist for temporarily novelty, temporarily recognition and temporarily privileges.

STATINIŲ PROJEKTŲ ELEKTROTECHNINĖS DALIES PROJEKTAVIMO PRAKTIKOS TYRIMAS / RESEARCH OF PRACTICAL DESIGNING THE ELECTROTECHNIC PART OF THE BUILDING

Baliutavičius, Alvydas 29 September 2008 (has links)
Such modern-day questions of technical projects as structure, the quality of work accomplishment, the speed of work, the establishment of new technologies, analysis of mistakes are being analysed in this work. Considerable changes within economy structures of Lithuania have been taking place during late 15 years. First of all, all the institutions, which had pursued and administrated the methods and order of the old planning style, collapsed, later the new ones have been undertaken. The basis of legislation was launched. Since Lithuania entered the European Union the mentioned process has been taking place and nowadays, and the legislation is being adapted to the common activities of European Union. Moreover, despite the changes in legislation, the new wave of technical innovations has sprung. After consolidation of Europe and when the common commodity market was opened the new commodity suppliers (unfortunately, not always having decisions of better quality) superseded the old technologies and the old manufacturers. Lithuania has been losing its old designers, executives, the other proficient workers together with its old facilities. Some specialists have retrained, the other simply have lost their qualification. Consequently, since the economy and construction have visibly revived in Lithuania, the young specialists, often with lack of experience, have made a big proportion of the personnel. The present situation in Lithuania, related with its technical projects and... [to full text]

Δημιουργία WEB περιβάλλοντος διαχείρισης για το πρωτόκολλο SIP / Designing a WEB user interface for management of SIP protocol

Τσελώνης, Σωτήρης 11 January 2011 (has links)
O OWM. / The subject of our project is to create a graphical user interface for managing systems that provide VOIP services. This is the Opensips Web Manager, a integrated solution regarding configuration, useful for the administration of a telephone system. OWM is a web user interface, designed using PHP. Especially OWM is used to manage system’s data and to control server’s status, which support a VOIP system. The administrator has access to the OWM through a web browser, so the physical location of the manager is not limited by SIP server’s physical location. The search for subscriber’ s and calling feature’s data, is performed by creating «query», to SIP server’s database. The method we use to develop our application has been two-dimensional. First was the implementation of VOIP service, which included the configurations of servers like DHCPs, DNSs and OpenSIPs. Next step was the installation of a WEB server that hosts OWM. Finally, we designed the web user interface.

Integration of waste minimisation strategies into the design process of buildings

Osmani, Mohamed January 2015 (has links)
The construction industry is by far the greatest consumer of resources and waste producer of all industries in the UK; being responsible for 32% of total waste generation, which equates to three times the combined waste produced by all households. Consequently, construction waste management and minimisation became a priority in the EU and UK environmental policy programmes resulting in a combined plethora of government-driven waste related legislation and guidance documents to curb construction waste production. Similarly, an ever-increasing global research on construction waste has been conducted over the last decade ranging from ‘soft' onsite waste auditing tools and methodologies to ‘hard' material and recycling technologies. However, the current state-of-research is largely dominated by endeavours to manage waste that has already been produced. Very few studies have been undertaken on how architects could go about minimising waste through a change in design practices. Hence, this research set out to construct and validate a Designing out Waste (DoW) Framework to assist architects in embedding design waste reduction strategies in each design stage.
