In orbit: Roberto Bolaño and world literature

Jónsson, Friðrik Sólnes January 2015 (has links)
Chilean author Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) has achieved considerable critical and commercial success among a global English readership. Breaking into the US market, which has an important mediating role for the international circulation of texts, is a rare feat for a non-Anglophone author and requires some explanation. In the spirit of Pascale Casanova’s international criticism, this paper looks at Bolaño’s work as world literature and his persona as a world-literature figure against which theories on the subject can be measured. Furthermore, I will partly use his posthumous novel, 2666, as an example of a work that arises out of this process of becoming-world-literature. The success of Bolaño more or less conforms to the main theories of world literature (Casanova, Moretti, Thomsen), but it also reveals interesting mismatches and problematic aspects that show a need to update existing theories.

The origins and impact of the function of crime investigation and detection in the British police service

Roach, Lawrence T. January 2004 (has links)
In this thesis the process by which crime investigation, detection and prosecution became an integral function of the British police service is analysed through an examination of public records, contemporary papers and documents, and by reference to the literature on policing. The impact of the adoption of that function on the role, organisation and management of modem British policing is then assessed. It is established that at its foundation by Robert Peel's Metropolitan Police Act of 1829, the British professional police service was intended to be a purely preventive and protective body of uniformed patrolling constables. The function of crime investigation, detection and criminal prosecution was then subsequently added to its responsibilities by government using administrative rather than any democratic or legislative means, thus creating the present dual crime prevention and crime detection role of the police. Major recurrentp roblemse xperiencedb y the modemB ritish police servicea re identified as arising from that change in its original functions and purposes, and proposals for action to resolve them are set out.

Postavy v díle Divocí detektivové Roberta Bolaña: mezi infra-realitou a skutečností / Characters in The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño: between the infra-reality and the fiction

Krejčová, Veronika January 2018 (has links)
This work is centered in the analysis of characters in the novel The Savage Detevcives written by Roberto Bolaño. The thesis has no purpose in the biografic analysis of its authors life. It represents a detailed research and identification of characters that were (and still are) attached to our delimited context which is centered in the years of the development of the plot (1975-1976) and the years after while the movement infrarrealsim lasts. Its purpose is the analysis of each selected character. In order to fulfill it I have created the concept of the "infra-grafía". An infra-grafía is some kind of curriculum of each character that helps to respond the question that this work arises: which characters are fictional and which are infra-real? Because real is none of them.

Deepwater

Carrasco, Katrina Marie 03 June 2015 (has links)
DEEPWATER is a novel that takes place in Port Townsend, Washington Territory, in 1887. This thesis contains the first sections of the novel, in which detective Alma Rosales goes undercover to infiltrate an opium-smuggling ring. She arrives in the remote outpost where the ring operates, falls in with some waterfront thieves, and gets to work. Soon it becomes apparent that Alma's reports to her Pinkerton employers aren't telling the whole truth. And as she gets cozier with the outlaws of Port Townsend, Alma's own identity and motives come into question. Thematically this novel is an exploration of constructed identity: the many parts one person plays in her daily life and over time, and how some parts become habit while others may never feel natural. Alma's disguises make explicit her various performances of personality, physicality and gender. Stylistically I've chosen to reflect Alma's personas, performed or otherwise, in corresponding narrative modes (points of view). Also explored are the performative aspects of dialogue, the blending or warping of genres and genre expectations, and the experience of inhabiting a physical body that is sometimes wildly at odds with the mind.

Evaluating the training techniques in the detective learning programmes in the in-service training centres of the Western Cape

Scheepers, Sandra 31 March 2008 (has links)
The research project investigated the basic detective training courses presented in the two training institutions of the Western Cape Province namely Paarl Detective Academy and Philippi In-Service Training Centre. The two courses that were researched were the Detective Learning programme of Paarl and the Introduction to Crime Investigation of Philippi. The focus of the research was on the training techniques used in the facilitation of these programmes. The research was done with interviews of focus groups of learners that were attending the courses. Individual interviews were held with trainers of both the training institutions. Observation was done in the classes at the two training institutions during the facilitation of the courses. Although the training techniques could be more advanced, other aspects were identified that was of a bigger concern for the learners and trainers alike. The recommendations drawn from conclusions of the data obtained may offer some solutions to the identified problems. / Criminology / (M. Tech. (Policing))

Poor academic performance of detective trainees in Hammanskraal academy in Pretoria, South Africa

Letsoalo, Victor Mogale 12 1900 (has links)
This study was intended to understand the experiences of individual detective trainees about poor academic performance in Hammanskraal academy. Detectives are the people who must ensure that perpetrators of crime face the full might of the law through investigating and proving before the courts the guilt on the part of the perpetrator, but also to prove the innocence in some instances. In this qualitative study, purposive sampling was used, and ten participants were selected to take part in the study. The participants include the six trainees who obtained below 50% mark in one of the summative assessments and could not qualify as detectives. Further, participants include the four trainers who had more than five years as trainers in the academy to give their perspective about the poor academic performance of trainees in Hammanskraal Academy. The unstructured interview was used to collect the data, and qualitative data analysis steps were applied to analyse the data. Some of the findings are the extent of damage that is caused by poor academic performance on the individual detective trainees, and that also affected their families. They also feel embarrassed that they did not qualify as detectives because of poor academic performance. In conclusion, there is a need to put measures that would deal with the poor academic performance of the detective trainees. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

The role of the investigator in the prosecution process

Nkashe, Manyedi Solomon 05 1900 (has links)
The process of investigation, which begins when a crime is reported and ends after a suspect has been convicted or discharged by a court of law, is a mammoth task which requires cooperation between various stakeholders, such as investigators and prosecutors. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of the specialised commercial crime investigators in the prosecution process. The study evaluated and explored the status of the current roles played by these investigators with the intention of recommending changes that could improve investigator practice. Two research questions were posed. First, the researcher endeavoured to find answers to a question regarding what the prosecution process entails. Secondly, the researcher sought to establish the roles of the specialised commercial crime investigator in the prosecution process. It was envisaged that the answers to these questions could be obtained from specialised commercial crime investigators and prosecutors deployed in the commercial crimes courts. On this basis two samples were chosen, with nine investigators from the Gauteng North office of the Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit and four prosecutors from the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Gauteng North. Some of the findings were that the investigators in trying to fulfil their roles of investigations have an adverse impact on the investigation and successful prosecution of offenders, which in turn lead to recidivism and apathy among the communities being served by the police and the justice system in general. The image of the police, particularly that of the commercial crime investigators, is often negated and the justice system is portrayed as a failure in addressing the problem of crime. The conclusions drawn from the data were that the roles of investigators in the prosecution process are mandatory as they are legislated rather that persuasive and that investigators cannot rely on prosecutors to handle all aspects of investigation once a case has been handed over to the prosecution. Apart from a lack of knowledge about these roles, it was established that some investigators deliberately ignore their roles in this relationship. It is proposed that dedicated training should be afforded to investigators and prosecutors above their existing training, with a focus on how to take part in the prosecution process. Investigators should be informed that their responsibilities in the prosecution process are a result of legislation and that failure to satisfy the legislation will carry adverse consequences for the investigation itself, the prosecution and the other stakeholders. / Criminal and Procedural Law / M.Tech. More than "just a hunch": meaning, feminine intuition and television sleuths

Unknown Date (has links)
The rise in popularity of the female sleuth television programs makes it important to explore representations of gender and knowledge. This investigation analyzes interpretations of intuition in the television sleuth genre and relevant paratexts, examines gendered public and private spheres and raises broader questions about gendered knowledge in the series Medium, Crossing Jordan, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Veronica Mars, Monk, The Profiler and True Calling. Rooted in feminist cultural studies, historical and sociological analysis, television and film theory and work on the detective genre, this investigation establishes common frames, or filters, through which the television sleuth genre represents intuition and the gendered experience of knowledge. Women with intuition are depicted as unstable, dangerous and mentally ill. Though framed similarly, intuitive men have more freedom. This study expands on academic research on television representations of gender and knowledge. Societal implications include further understanding of meaning-making in regard to gendered knowing. / by Sheela Celeste Dominguez. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2008. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.
