From the schematic to the symbolic: the radical possibilities of the imagination in Kant's third Critique

Camp, Ty D. 16 January 2010 (has links)
In this thesis it is argued that Kant's Copernican turn depends on his doctrine of the imagination, and that by understanding the role of imagination as symbolic rather than schematic, the resources are provided to show that his critical philosophy has more radical possibilities than those of his post-Kantian critics. To display this, it is first pointed out that the crucial role the imagination plays in Kant's Copernican turn is not fully developed in his first Critique. Next, it is argued that Kant's doctrine of the imagination is not fully realized until the third Critique in which Kant radicalizes his notion of constructivism by introducing a distinction between determinative and reflective judgments. Finally, it is suggested that while Hegel believes that Kant?s idealism is not dynamic enough to support a full-fledged constructivism, in fact, when Kant?s mature doctrine of the imagination is taken into account, this is no longer the case because Kant believes that our particular experiences of the world unfold artistically and creatively according to the work of the imagination. It is suggested, therefore, that in many ways Kant anticipates the developments of thinkers such as Hegel and other post- Kantians and may even continue to lie beyond them.

It was opted in carrying through an analysis of the relation of the levels of fecundity with the education and income of the North women. Using the data of the demographic censuses of 1991 and 2000 and of the National Research for Sample of Domiciles (PNAD) of 2006, it is made first an analysis of the evolution of the levels and standards of the fecundity from years 60 in the region North and states. After that it was possible to carry through a space analysis of the levels of fecundity in the microregions of the region North. E finally, proceeded it an analysis from the relation of the levels and etários standards of the fecundity with the education degree and familiar income of the North women. How much to the levels of fecundity of the Region North it was observed that it has a trend of convergence of the levels for lesser values each time. However, the speed of this convergence is bigger for the resident women in the urban areas. Already it is possible to verify that the North more walks each time for the standard of the too much Brazilian regions, tending to finish with the heading of region with bigger fecundity it country. It is verified that the majority of the states of the region North already meets with next levels of fecundity to the spare level. The State of the Tocantins would be the only state of the region that already possesss fecundity below of the spare level. The Amapá and Acre still are the states that present the biggest taxes of fecundity of the region. We verify that the education possesss a direct relation with the levels of fecundity of the resident women in the region North. The education, beyond making possible the woman biggest possibility to improve its social and economic conditions, is also a determinative factor of the fecundity levels. The behavior of the fecundity in accordance with the family income indicates that it has a trend of the high fecundity if to reveal in the families with inferior monthly income one wage-minimum. One expects that this work presents subsidies for the application of programs and efficient public politics that guarantee the reproductive rights and access to the reproductive health for the set of the North population.

Jahrhundert / Vokiečių kalbos dūrinių daryba XV–XVIII a. rankraštiniuose dvikalbiuose baltų kalbų žodynuose / The Word-Formation of German Compounds in Hand-written Bilingual Baltic Dictionaries from 15th to 18th Centuries

Jarmalavičius, Dalius 25 February 2014 (has links)
Medžiaga rinkta iš įvairių amžių šaltinių: paties pirmojo vokiečių-prūsų kalbų Elbingo žodynėlio XV a. nuorašo, J. Langijaus XVII a. latvių-vokiečių kalbų ir XVIII a. / This dissertation analyzes the compounding of German nouns in the hand-written bilingual Baltic dictionaries. The research begins with the oldest manuscript of the German–Prussian Vocabulary of Elbing, dated with the 15th Century. The second research source is the Latvian–German Dictionary by J. Langius from the 17th Century. The third manuscript is the German–Lithuanian dictionary by J. Brodowski from the 18th Century. The research material comes from the above-mentioned Baltic dictionaries. The results are presented as follows: first the orthography of nominal compounds is discussed, after that the types of German nouns based on their left-hand members containing a linking element are described in detail. Finally, the paper analyses classification (group) of compounds according to the semantic and syntactic interpretation of their constituents: determinative, possessive, copulative and deverbal. Further, an internal structure of nouns is described. At the end of each research chapter there is an overview of the words with unique morphemes, konfixes and affixoids.

Nominal Compounds in Old Latvian Texts in the 16th and 17th Centuries

Bukelskytė-Čepelė, Kristina January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates the system of compounding attested in the earliest written Latvian texts of the 16th and 17th centuries. The philological analysis presented in this work is the first systematic attempt to extensively treat compounds in Old Latvian. The purpose of this thesis is to thoroughly describe the system of compounding of the earliest period of written Latvian. One of the main aims of the analysis provided in this work is to determine whether the Old Latvian compounds were distinguished in terms of their meaning and form. This is why another important aim of this study is to discern the most characteristic formal properties of each category of compounds in Old Latvian. This study also addresses the morphological variation of the components of compounds and seeks to explain why one finds different tendencies of compounding in the texts of this period. Firstly, it is shown in this thesis that compounds in Old Latvian were clearly distinguished in terms of their meaning. The main semantic types of Old Latvian compounds, which were analyzed in this study, are the determinative compounds, the possessive compounds, the verbal governing compounds, and the copulative compounds. Secondly, it is argued that the aforementioned types of compounds were clearly differentiated in terms of the formal properties of their components. A large number of possessive compounds and verbal governing compounds had the compositional suffix -is (m.)/-e (f.). By contrast, only a handful of determinative compounds had this suffix. In view of the distribution of the suffix found in the Old Latvian compounds, it is suggested that the suffix was originally restricted to adjectival compounds. Furthermore, the different types of compounds in Old Latvian were also distinguished in terms of the first component. In the majority of cases, both the possessive compounds and the verbal governing compounds were coined without linking elements, while the determinative compounds had linking elements to a larger extent. Thirdly, it is proposed in this thesis that a part of linking elements used in the determinative compounds in Old Latvian originated from the original stem vowels of the first components. Thus, it is argued that stem compounds were still attested in the Old Latvian texts, although this Baltic model of coining compounds is no longer visible in Modern Latvian. Lastly, it is suggested that the tendencies of compounding found in the texts under discussion represent dialectal differences. Another contribution of this study is that the Old Latvian compounds are not treated in isolation, but analyzed in drawing parallels with compounds in the other Baltic languages, Lithuanian in particular. Hence, by analyzing common features and similarities between the compounding systems, the Old Latvian compounds are positioned within the context of the Baltic system of compounding.

U radu se analizira funkcionisanje determinativnih
padežnih sistema u romanijskim govorima Starog
Vlaha.
propratna okolnost, kriterijum / osnov
kvalifikativnog tipa, komparativnost,
kvantifikativnost), intencionalnost, kauzalnost,
kondicionalnost, koncesivnost i posesivnost.
Posebno se sagledavaju padežne konstrukcije s
primarno prostornim značenjem, kao izvornim
domenom, koje mehanizmom metaforizacije prostora
nalaze svoje mesto u sistemu formalizatora navedenih
apstraktnih semantičkih kategorija kao ciljnih
domena.
/
The thesis analyses the function of
determinative case systems in the Romanija
speech of the Stari Vlah region. It deals with
syntactic and semantic characteristics of case
constructions which act as syntactic formalisers
of the semantic category of spatiality as well as
those which are syntactic formalisers of more
abstract semantic categories, such as the
following: temporality, qualificability
(including instrumentality, qualificability in a
narrower sense, concomitancy, the criterion /
basis of the qualificative type, comparability
and quantifiability), intentionality, causality,
conditionality, concessionality and
possessiveness. A special attention is devoted to
the case constructions whose primary meaning
is that of spatiality, as their source domain,
which then by the mechanism of
metaphorisation of space find their place in the
system of formalisers of the aforementioned
abstract semantic categories as their target
domains.
