The following paper seeks to contribute to the study of domestic work in Brazil, especially its reality in Marília city (SP). After 70 years of invisibility before the Consolidation of Labor Laws in 1943, the enactment of Constitutional Amendment 72/2013 brings benefits and rights won for domestic servants, many demands are still made for the professional category, the situation reveals the value this work has in the country, related to income and its symbolic/cultural character. However, the law opens up a space to discuss other issues as paid domestic work and its relation to the past. Like a hypothesis, we raise the argument that its social and cultural construction in the slavery past contributes to the fact that social stratifications based on issues such as race and class, and especially gender, can clarify social markers in the present. The research sought to analyze the benefits and disadvantages of this argument to understand domestic work nowadays. For this purpose, we present the fieldwork results conducted in Marília city (SP), with employees and employers, as well as data from the bibliography raised from History and Anthropology. The intimacy with the family, the attachment between the employee and employers, the decharacterization of the profession as work and its value, are aspects that the interviewees presented, as objectives, we try to identify this reality of the domestic work in the present day and its relation with the past.

[en] HOUSE CLEANERS AND EMBROIDERERS: CONTEMPORARY FORMS OF FEMALE WORK APPROPRIATION / [pt] DIARISTAS E BORDADEIRAS: FORMAS DE APROPRIAÇÃO DO TRABALHO FEMININO NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE

KEILA GARCIA DA SILVA 26 March 2015 (has links)
[en] The subject of this thesis is the female work performed in Rio de Janeiro nowadays by house cleaners and embroiderers. The main goal is to compare and to analyze two different professional occupations, primarily performed by women, which are currently undertaken within private spaces: the activities of contracted house cleaners and embroiderers. The central questions are: How the female contribution to the job market is organized and controlled when her work is performed within private spaces? Which are the similarities and differences between professional work performed by women on their own homes — like the embroiderers —, or on someone else s houses — like the house cleaners? The study argues that the female s contribution to the Brazilian job market is still in a subordinated and uneven position when compared to the male work. Furthermore, the author sustains that this is one of the social mechanisms to maintain the subalternization of women, within the frame of patriarchal Brazilian social relations. This work describes and discusses the female work performed in private spaces (within the house), by relating gender relations with the recent transformations observed in the work relations. The research was developed with the contribution of six workers of the São Gonçalo, RJ.

Two concomitant paradigmatic changes reached domestic work from the 2000s: the gradual acquisition of rights by monthly workers with their increasing effectiveness and the increase in the proportion of domestic work performed by day laborers in paid domestic service. This last modality has no right, reason why the diarization of domestic work is presented as an escape valve that threatens the realization of acquired rights. In opposition to this, higher income and the social security contribution that grows at a more intense pace among day laborers have appeared as criteria used to question the notion that the diarization of domestic work amounts to its precariousation. To this extent, the responsibility to "take advantage" of the possibilities opened by diarization rests with the workers, resuscitating a notion of tradi-tionalism that refers to the classical sociological literature. Based on interviews with eight domestic workers and data collected from PNAD, this dissertation analyzes relationships that relate to four elements that orbited the narratives provided by the interviewees: the fam-ily of the employer, the worker's own family, above mentioned income and rights (material-ized in the work signed or in the adhesion to the condition of autonomous social security taxpayer). In this way it will be realized that the experiences of the workers are central to perceive and overcome the gaps left by those initial criteria. The experiences of the workers themselves make it possible to perceive how and at what cost they obtain better income, in the cases in which they obtain it, and the problems related to the worker's adherence social security taxpayers. The importance of this research lies in the fact that, since domestic work is located at the crossroads of race, gender and social class articulations that form the matrix of inequality in the country, the acquisition of rights points, in principle, towards the end of an era in which occupation was seen as a remnant of slavery. Therefore, analyzing their transformations is necessary to ascertain their impacts on the achievements of a struggle that already lasts more than eighty years.

This dissertation is the result of the qualitative research on the life history of domestic day laborers, whose objective was the analysis of the representations and perceptions about the informality of the work contract and the health risks of domestic day laborers. The analysis of the subject is justified by the lack of researches developed on the health problems of domestic workers, necessary to subsidize the State’s actions in the development of strategies prevention and control of occupational risks and health promotion policies for the millions of Brazilian female workers who work in informality in paid domestic work, considered indispensable by most middle and upper class families. The research was carried out with four women, residents of the cities surrounding the Federal District, who were engaged or exercise domestic work during most of their lives in the professional category of day laborer in residences of the Federal District. Through unstructured interviews based on life stories and coping strategies front of everyday problems, the day laborers narrated their experiences and perceptions that guided their choices and working relationship. The analysis of the trajectories of the domestic day laborers revealed how much their origin in popular classes, the family history, low level of education, the fact of being women and the need to reconcile paid domestic work with the establishment of children, are the determining factors for their choice to work as day laborer. The results of the research suggests that the lack of regulation of the occupation, the servile condition and the ambiguity in the relation with the members of the employer's family, the long working days, the multiple responsibilities and the problems with harassment and discrimination put the day laborer’s health at risk. It was also evidenced the need to construct public policies that contemplate the safety and health of domestic workers.

A perspectiva metodológica do estudo é quantitativa e qualitativa. / It is a study about the implications of the growing diarisation of domestic work in Brazil on the issue of social protection of daily workers. The recent regulation of domestic work in the country is an undeniable advance for the guarantee of better standards of social protection of domestic, historically deficient. However, according to what is implied by the Law n. 150/2015, the person who works up to two days a week in the same family residence is not subject to this regulation, because under these conditions the employment relationship is not established. In this case there is an autonomous provision of domestic service. Although daily workers have the right to access social security social protection through individual contributions, we identified significant barriers to the access of workers to the system. In this case, regional inequalities represent an important aggravating factor. Thus, the process of diarisation in progress in the country appears, potentially, as the new face of the (un) social protection of the Brazilian domestic worker. The methodological perspective of the study is quantitative and qualitative. Documentary and bibliographical sources were used, as well as statistics data. For an overall view of paid domestic work we used data compiled by the International Labor Organization (ILO). And for the Brazilian reality, we used microdata from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD/IBGE). We also conducted interviews with daily workers living in the cities of Belém/PA and São Paulo/SP, guided by a semi-structured interview script, containing open and closed questions.

Regardless of legal acknowledgement, there are female housekeepers who work on a daily hiring system that allows them to work on a maximum of two days a week for the same employer. Their occupation is marked by the perpetuation of a gender and social status stratified system, which yields the reinforcement of inequalities, and brings another dimension to the matter: age. The number of people with this sort of employment has been increasing, mainly in the great metropolitan areas. Recently, this kind of labor has been studied by Work Psychology, notedly by the Social Psychology of Work. Contemplating this data, this research seeks to understand the process of signification of work for the daily hired housekeepers, in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Basing essentially on the activity theory, this dissertation comprehends significances as constructions mediated by concrete activity. Therefore, 12 daily hired housekeepers were interviewed, and their answers analyzed according to the construction of Meaning Cores. In this study, we inferred and systematized the construction of six meaning cores that have as a focus: a) occupational trajectory of the housekeepers; b) tools, obstacles and strategies for facing the execution of the work activity; c) social relations in the working process; d) the perception of the housekeeping work activity; e) repercussions of the changes in the work area regarding daily hired housekeepers; and f) the conclusion about the final work. Within the human activity of housekeeping there is the prescription of objects, rules and procedures related to the desired results and how to reach them, however, it is a dynamic system, which can lead to similarities and contradictions in the activity itself. We were able to verify the results through a large amount of literature, mainly when it came to matters that unveil the precariousness of work, since this occupation still carries a lot of the structures of the unequal social scheme in Brazil. Aside from the contributions in this research, we brought up various themes that can be further studied.
