Towards the global library : a cultural history of the British Library, 1972-2000

In 1972, the passing of the British Library Act formally brought to an end an institutional relationship between the British Museum and the British Museum Library, which had lasted for over two hundred years. Since its creation in 1753, the Library had, in its capacity as the national deposit, developed a range of services and an infrastructure, which centred on the acquisition, storage and preservation of material for the national collection. However, in addition to meeting its legislative responsibilities, the Library had, from the very beginning, made itself increasingly responsible for the organisation and provision of the national collection for a growing academic usership. This desire, to fulfill both the function of a secure repository and of an educational resource, had throughout its history, provided the Library with the majority of the practical challenges that it faced in its day-to-day operations. However, between 1972-2000, the internal policy documents of the national library, now renamed the British Library, indicate a period of significant change, in which this study asserts a radical reorganisation of the Library's services and infrastructure was taking place. This thesis sets out by asking what evidence there is to support the assertion of a radical reorganisation of the national library during this period. The reformation of the national library as an autonomous institution in 1972, and the lead up to its subsequent relocation in 1997, naturally enough serve as starting points for this enquiry, which goes on to examine the discursive practices and theoretical issues that accompanied the formation of the new British Library. The changes noted in this study therefore, chart not only the transition from analogue to digital library services, but also the increasing relevance of the central discourses of librarianship - the provision, storage and classification of information - to information science as a whole.

My Google Death : Exploring an architectural opportunity for the digital graveyard

We live in a time where ”the digital graveyard” is starting to overgrow, namely all the inactive digital information that is left behind by people passing away. In april this year Google is one of the first companies to address this issue with their new afterlife service ”Google death manager”. I intend to use the process of this service as an input source for my project and investigate how it can be visualized and translated into an architectural experience. / Vi lever i en tid där "den digitala kyrkogården" expanderar som aldrig förr, nämligen alla den inaktiva digitala information som är kvar efter människor som avlider. I april i år är Google ett av de första företagen att ta itu med denna fråga med sin nya tjänst "Google death manager". Jag tänker använda processen i denna tjänst som en ingångskälla för mitt projekt och undersöka hur den kan visualiseras och översättas till en arkitektonisk upplevelse.

<p>I dagens affärssamhälle är utbytet av vanliga visitkort i papper enormt. Det är utan tvekan det ledande sättet för människor som träffas första gången att utbyta information i en affärsrelation. Det finns brister gällande uppföljning och hantering av vanliga visitkort och projektgruppen började då fundera på alternativ till pappersvisitkorten.</p><p>I dagens samhälle flyttas alltmer teknik till mobiltelefoner. En mobiltelefon kan idag användas till allt från att göra bankärenden till att läsa tidningen på nätet, vilket för 15 år sedan skulle låta helt orimligt. Det dyker dagligen upp nya mobilapplikationer som ska underlätta och effektivisera vardagen på något sätt och marknaden är enorm. På denna snabbt växande marknad har projektgruppen valt att ta fram ett koncept som de kallar Meetia.</p><p>Meetia är i huvudsak en mobilapplikation framtagen för att trådlöst utbyta digitala visitkort och förenkla bokning av möten genom att synka användarnas kalendrar. Applikationen har även funktioner som låter användaren enkelt och snabbt skapa nya visitkort direkt i telefonen.</p><p>Projektgruppen har även tagit fram en kompletterande hemsida till mobilapplikationen där användare har möjlighet att lagra och hantera de digitala visitkort som mottagits, för att sedan genom smarta sökfunktioner enkelt hitta de visitkort man söker.</p><p>Meetia kommer vara ett optimalt verktyg för att skapa nya kontakter då hela vägen från första kontakt till möte eller lagring av visitkort enkelt sköts med konceptet Meetia. Meetia kommer framför allt inrikta sig mot mässor där visitkort är vanligt förekommande och mängder affärskontakter skapas. För att nå ut till de stora mässorna i Sverige kommer applikationen finnas med mässfunktioner.</p>

The role of the notary in secure electronic commerce

The profession of the notary is at a cross roads. The Notary operates in a world of paperbased transactions where the use of traditional signatures and seals are mandatory. The practices and procedures which have evolved over centuries simply cannot be applied directly in a digital environment. Establishing a framework for the authentication of computer-based information in today's commercial environment requires a familiarity with concepts and professional skills from both the legal and computer security fields. Combining these two disciplines is not an easy task. Concepts from the information security field often correspond only loosely with concepts from the legal field, even in situations where the terminology is similar. This thesis explores the history of the Notary, the fundamental concepts of e-commerce, the importance of the digital or electronic signature and the role of the emerging &quotCyber" or &quotElectronic" Notary (E-Notary) in the world of electronic commerce. The research investigates whether or not the functions of the &quotNotary Public" can successfully evolve in the world of E-Commerce, and if so what are the ramifications. This thesis comprises a survey and critical analysis of proposed architectures and implementations for &quotElectronic Notary Services" in an Internet based, electronic commerce environment. It includes an analysis of relevant historical and legal factors relevant to these emerging technologies. Given the highly dynamic nature of this topic, this thesis does not propose or recommend a single architecture or implementation but emphasises the need for further research not only into technological factors but also into the real legal and social needs that affect the role of the E-Notary. The approach undertaken was an analytical approach to the available current documentation against input from leading practitioners included practicing Notaries from Australia, the United States and the Court of Faculties - London.

Authenticity and integrity of digital information have been discussed extensively within the record management and archival sectors for several decades. The on-going projects and research in the area have resulted in an understanding of the potential problems when it comes to keeping authenticity in digital information. In recent years the blockchain technologies have gained attention as a potential solution to many of the problems associated with management and storage of digital records. The area of information security is getting more and more focused on preventing manipulation of existing data. The conclusions here is that blockchain technologies have potential to solve several problems associated with the management and storage of digital records. The archival sector can benefit from the use of blockchains to prevent time consuming and expensive work efforts to re-establish authenticity in digital information ones lost.

Arkivens strategi för att hantera digital information på äldre lagringsmedia / Archival strategies for managing digital information stored on legacy media

The thesis investigates how Swedish archives and special collections manage digital information stored on legacy media. The purpose is to understand what strategies and practices archives use when extracting digital information from legacy media. The strategies used to extract and preserve data from legacy media preludes how archives should preserve other born digital information and provides a micro perspective for comprehensive further investigations. The research will increase our understanding of archival practices by looking at the Swedish archives. The thesis uses philosophy of information as a metatheory to frame the investigation, and proceeds to use principles found either in archival litterature or established in previous international research to analyze and compare strategies used by the Swedish archives when extracting data from legacy media. The thesis uses a quantitative method to analyze collected statistical data and a qualitative method to interpret and compare archival strategies. The quantitative results show that while most Swedish archives still have legacy media in their collections, the administrative archives have either prohibited legacy media in new accessions, never really received them in the first place or already migrated the data to electronic archives. However, conversely the results also show that archives with special collections still receive legacy media in their accessions and also experience a small but significant increase in the accession frequency. The difference in accession frequency between the archives is explained in part by the rules governing the accessions, but also by the fact that administrative archives manage records whereas special collections tend to manage documents. The qualitative results show that archives who still manage legacy media, either in their accessions or collections, are still mostly in the process of deciding what strategies and methods to use when extracting data from legacy media.

Digital Systems and the Experience of Legacy: Supporting Meaningful Interactions with Multigenerational Data

People generate vast quantities of digital information as a product of their interactions with digital systems and with other people. As this information grows in scale and becomes increasingly distributed through different accounts, identities, and services, researchers have studied how best to develop tools to help people manage and derive meaning from it. Looking forward, these issues acquire new complexity when considered in the context of the information that is generated across one’s life or across generations. The long-term lens of a multigenerational timeframe elicits new questions about how people can engage with these heterogeneous collections of information and how future generations will manage and make sense of the information left behind by their ancestors. My prior work has examined how people perceive the role that systems will play in the long-term availability, management, and interpretation of digital information. This work demonstrates that while people certainly ascribe meaning to aspects of their digital information and believe that there is value held in their largely uncurated digital materials, it is not clear how or if that digital information will be transmitted, interpreted, or maintained by future generations. Furthermore, this work illustrates that there is a tension between the use of digital systems as ways of archiving content and sharing aspects of one’s life, and an uncertainty about the long term availability of the information shared through those services. Finally, this work illustrates the ways in which existing systems do not meet the needs of current users who are developing archives of their own digital information nor of future users who might try and derive meaning from information left behind by other people. Building on that earlier work, my dissertation work investigates how we can develop systems that foster engagement with lifetimes or generations of digital information in ways that are sensitive to how people define and communicate their identity and how they reflect on their life and experiences. For this work, I built a website that uses people’s Facebook data to ask them to reflect on the ways their life has changed over time. Participants’ experiences using this website illustrate the types of information that are and are not captured by digital systems. In addition, this work highlights the ways in which people engage with memories, artifacts, and experiences of people who have passed away and considers how digital systems and information can support those practices. I also interviewed participants about their experiences researching their family history, the ways in which they remember people who’ve passed away, and unresolved questions they have about the past. The findings from this aspect of the work contribute a better understanding of how digital systems, and the digital information people create over the course of their lives, intersect with the processes of death, dying, and remembrance.
