OpenCourseWare is an innovative and bold idea. It aims to support learning and teaching programme significantly. Learning material contained in an OCW provides learners an opportunity to gain knowledge beyond their routine classroom environments. These are in the digital form which can be accessed online, thus breaking the barriers of time and distance. Indian academics can play a significant role in creating OCW materials for the students to propagate the teaching and learning process diluting the limitations of traditional educational setup and begin a new culture of "Learning Beyond Classroom". The present study aims to sensitize the teachers and learners about the potentials of the OCWs. It presents a proposal for creating an "Indian OCW Consortium" at different levels. Also discusses the challenges and issues in establishing such an OCW project.

The three-dimensional digital preservation of real objects comprises two main aspects: the preservation of the shape of the object and the preservation of its appearance. This thesis focuses on the image-based appearance preservation of real objects and provides a set of contributions on the theme. The first contribution consists in two groups of experiments, where each one of them targets one different image-based appearance preservation approach. These experiments are based in fundamental concepts related to the behavior of light and in a compilation of works that aim to preserve the appearance of real objects using different types of images. The first group of experiments attempts to disregard as much as possible the influence of the environment light. The second one goes one step further and considers a single light source. These experiments were the basis and motivation for the development of the main contribution of this thesis, which is a novel image-based appearance preservation method that considers the whole environment as a source of light. It presents as novelty the fact that it estimates the incoming light from the whole environment to each point in an object surface patch. At the best knowledge of this work, none of the current existing methods adopts this approach. Considering the whole environment as source of light allows flexible acquisition setups and, as it reproduces what happens in reality, potentially retrieves more reliable information about the incident lighting. This thesis presents this method and its application on real and synthetic environments. Conclusions about this work are presented and future research directions are discussed._________________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMO: A preservação tridimensional digital de objetos reais compreende dois aspectos: a preservação da forma do objeto e a preservação de sua aparência. Esta tese tem como foco a preservação da aparência de objetos reais baseada em imagens e provê uma série de contribuições sobre o tema. A primeira contribuição consiste em dois grupos de experimentos, onde cada um trabalha uma abordagem diferente na preservação da aparência baseada em imagens. Esses experimentos são baseados em conceitos fundamentais relacionados ao comportamento da luz e em uma compilação de trabalhos que visam preservar a aparência de objetos reais usando diferentes tipos de imagens. O primeiro grupo de experimentos tenta desconsiderar ao máximo a inuência da luz. O segundo vai um passo além e considera uma única fonte de luz. Estes experimentos são a base e motivação para o desenvolvimento da principal contribuição desta tese, que é um novo método de preservação da aparência baseado em imagens que considera todo o ambiente como fonte de luz. Ele apresenta como novidade o fato de estimar a luz vinda de todo o ambiente para cada ponto em uma região na superfície de um objeto. Até onde foi pesquisado neste trabalho, nenhum método existente adota essa abordagem. Considerar todo o ambiente como fonte de luz permite configurações flexíveis durante a aquisição e, já que reproduz o que acontece na realidade, recupera informações potencialmente mais confiáveis sobre a iluminação incidente. Esta tese apresenta este método e sua aplicação em ambientes reais e sintéticos. Conclusões sobre este trabalho são apresentadas e direções futuras de pesquisa são discutidas.

Digital communication produces millions of emails, text messages, movies, images, and much more every day. As with all historical records, digital records are important to preserve because they allow us to study the past. There are, however, several challenges regarding their preservation. Unlike many of their analogue counterparts, digital records rely on a combination of hardware and software to be accessible, but hardware and software eventually degrade and become obsolete. This makes digital records inaccessible because the means to render them are no longer available. In addition to these technological challenges, there are issues surrounding appraisal, copyright, significant properties, and metadata. This thesis studies the challenges of digital preservation and what is being done to address them. I begin by introducing the challenges surrounding this topic and the methods of preservation that are currently available to archivists. I then analyse leading digital preservation standards such as the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) and Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) as well as digital preservation systems including Archivematica and Preservica. I also conduct a case study of Archivematica to analyse how well it manages the challenges of digital preservation. I conclude by explaining that there are no perfect solutions to digital preservation problems. The best that can currently be done is to manage the issues rather than solve them. / February 2017

Emphasizes first, concepts and functions related to electronic journals and digital objects, as well as procedural elements and practices involved in the framework of digital preservation of electronic journal, according to the specialized literature. International and Brazilian initiatives actions were also identified, among them, Cariniana Network, a pioneering Brazilian collective initiative of digital preservation. Then, analyzes the results of the questionnaire applied to the selected journals for this research and observation in sites The Keepers and Cariniana Network to complement the empirical research inherent in digital preservation of these journals. Based on this theoretical and analytical contribution it was possible to present an overview of digital preservation practices of Brazilian electronic journals in information science, emphasizing the importance of digital preservation actions to ensure proper storage, usability and long-term access to these digital objects.

And as knowledge registered, documented, becomes part of the field of history, collective memory and social representation and becomes subject to attention and study by Information Science. This paper verified the existence or absence of digital preservation activities in a journal daily newspaper printed and Centennial - Jornal O Norte - member of one of the largest mass media in Brazil - the Diarios Associados Group - and how these results can influence the loss of social memory. For that visits were made to the files of the Journal - collection on paper and what should be a regular digital newspaper library - where photographs were taken and data collection in bits, in detail, the first six months of 2000 - the year the process of digital storage of O Norte started. The finding of complete absence of digital preservation policy in this company has become even more chronic when the data show a total loss of 23.3% of the data should be stored and, if not (re) scan, may be doomed the "amnesia" of zeros and ones. Based on this and other percentage of the survey results, this work suggests some actions to preserve digital bits in the O Norte and also proposes a model for digital preservation based on the precept of family memory of Fernando Catroga. / O Jornalismo é uma forma de conhecimento. E como conhecimento registrado, documentado, passa a integrar o campo da história, da memória coletiva como representação social e torna-se passível de atenção e de estudos pela Ciência da Informação. Esta dissertação verificou a existência ou ausência de ações de preservação digital em um periódico impresso jornalístico diário e centenário o Jornal O Norte -, integrante de um dos maiores grupos de comunicação de massa do Brasil os Diários Associados -, e como esses resultados podem influenciar na perda de memória social. Para isso foram realizadas visitas aos arquivos do Jornal coleção em papel e o que deveria ser uma hemeroteca digital do periódico -, onde foram feitas fotografias e coleta de dados em bits, em detalhes, dos seis primeiros meses do ano 2000 ano em que o processo de armazenamento digital de O Norte foi iniciado. A constatação de total ausência de política de preservação digital nessa empresa tornou-se ainda mais crônica quando os dados apontaram uma perda total de 23,3% dos dados que deveria estar armazenados e que, se não forem (re)digitalizados, podem estar condenados à amnésia de zeros e uns. Tomando como base esse e outros resultados percentuais do levantamento, este trabalho sugere algumas ações de preservação digital para o arquivo em bits do Jornal O Norte e propõe, ainda, um modelo de preservação digital com base no preceito de memória familiar de Fernando Catroga.

Abstract in English / The number of studies focused on the digital preservation of indigenous knowledge has been growing steadily over the years. Despite the growth in this area of research, there is still a lack of information technology tools that preserve and disseminate indigenous knowledge. Indigenous knowledge has been highlighted as an area that can advance sustainable development, and its preservation is therefore of the utmost importance. Indigenous knowledge is mostly present within older generations, and if it is not preserved, this knowledge will die with its custodians. African communities rely heavily on indigenous medicine. A digital platform needs to be explored that can preserve practices relating to these medicines for future generations. Since indigenous knowledge is dynamic and is constantly evolving, there is a need to explore a digital tool that can highlight this dynamic nature. Current methods of preserving indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants were found to be less than effective and marred by constraints such as space and time. The main objective of this study was therefore to develop a model that could be used to guide the design of a new e-learning system aimed at facilitating the preservation of indigenous knowledge of Namibia’s medicinal plants. In this study, e-learning technology was used to determine the requirements for presenting indigenous knowledge of Namibia’s medicinal plants in such a way as to ensure that individuals can internalise and preserve this knowledge. An interpretivist qualitative approach was followed. Data was collected by conducting a literature review and carrying out a survey. A prototype e-learning system was developed and evaluated based on the collected data. It was found that preserving indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants through e-learning would require, among other things, engagement with the relevant knowledge custodians, leveraging multimedia, and offering content in indigenous languages. / School of Computing / M.Sc. This study aims to examine the views on digitization of eight respondents, all working at different libraryinstitutions in Sweden, and how their views are reflected in their library's digitization strategies. The poll wasconducted on the basis of Ingrid Mason's theory of information standards, their structure and sociopoliticalnature. The informantion standards are divided into three aspects, curatorial, semantic and technical, and theyaffect selection of, intellectual and physical access to the digitized material, which in the end is what constitutes the digital cultural heritage.The background to the study is that the Swedish library institutions in the current situation lacks a nationalstandard or a common strategy for the digitization of cultural heritage, while it is still implemented digitizationprojects at many library institutions. The method used is qualitative, structured interviews with open-ended questions.The study shows that one of the main motives behind the libraries' digitization projects is to make librarymaterials available in a new way, creating greater opportunities for the users to take advantage of the material.The library users are the ones who mainly control what is digitized, although aspects of preservation ismentioned. Furthermore, it appears that the respondents believe that digitization offers improved capabilities tosearch and learn more about the collections, but the actual work of image capture, the addition of metadata,presentation to users and long-term preservation is very complex.Views on what it is to be digitized, how the material should be selected and provided with metadata and howit should be presented to users is what creates the standards that libraries use when they digitize their materials,and digitization of library materials creates new conditions for new users to access and use library material.This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

It is 50 years since the development of the first computer game and digital games now have an unprecedented influence on our culture. An increasingly popular leisure activity, digital games are also permeating other aspects of society. They continue to influence computer technology through graphics, animation and social networking; an influence which is also being felt in other media, in particular film and television. They are a new art form and they are seen to be influential on children s learning and development. However, despite their pervasiveness and apparent importance within our society and culture, they are still largely ignored as part of our cultural heritage. Dismissed as disposable, entertainment products, they have not specifically been addressed in most of the academic literature on digital preservation which represents a serious omission in past research. This was justification for an exploratory study into the preservation of digital games and the aim of this study has been to explore the value of digital games, their significance in our culture, and the current status of their preservation. Investigating the relationship of games to culture; reviewing current preservation activities and drawing conclusions about the value of digital games and the significance of their preservation were the study s objectives. These have been achieved through interviews with key stakeholders the academic community, as potential users of collections; memory institutions, as potential keepers of collections; fan-based game preservation experts; and representatives from the games industry. In addition to this, case studies of key game preservation activities were explored. Through this research, a clearer picture of attitudes towards digital games and opinions on the need for preservation of these cultural products has been established. It has become apparent that there is a need for more coherent and collaborative efforts to ensure the longevity of these important aspects of digital heritage.

Com o crescente aumento do uso das tecnologias de informação e da implantação de documentos digitais nas Câmaras Municipais, ligadas ao processo legislativo municipal, surge inquietação em relação a forma como esses documentos são elaborados para serem recuperados e disponibilizados no futuro. É preciso refletir se as inovações, mudanças e atualizações em softwares, hardwares e suportes informacionais acompanharão o processo de evolução tecnológica. Torna-se necessário pensar na conservação e preservação digital para a recuperação da informação dos documentos arquivísticos digitais legislativos municipais em longo prazo. O objetivo desse estudo foi a preservação digital dentro do contexto da informação do documento arquivístico legislativo municipal, visando a elaboração de modelos de código de classificação e tabela de temporalidade e destinação, e de metadados para documentos do processo legislativo municipal. A metodologia utilizada foi a análise exploratória e descritiva, baseada no levantamento bibliográfico. Destaca uma abordagem sobre documento arquivístico, documento arquivístico digital, documento legislativo municipal e preservação digital e preservação de documentos arquivísticos digitais legislativos municipais. Com análise dessas informações foi possível concluir que os documentos arquivísticos digitais legislativos municipais necessitam desde a sua origem seguir procedimentos adequados para a sua preservação, desde a implantação de um Sistema Informatizado de Gestão Arquivística de Documentos, como de Repositórios Arquivísticos Digitais Confiáveis e plataformas de acesso, que sigam os requisitos estabelecidos pelo CONARQ e demais órgãos e colegiados responsáveis pela gestão arquivística. Desta maneira será possível manter a autenticidade dos documentos em longo prazo. / With the increasing use of information technologies and the deployment of digital documents in the Municipal Councils, linked to the municipal legislative process, there is concern about the way these documents are designed to be retrieved and made available in the future. It is necessary to reflect if innovations, changes and updates in software, hardware and information media will accompany the process of technological evolution. It is necessary to think about digital preservation and preservation for the retrieval of the information of the municipal legislative digital archives in the long term. The objective of this study was the digital preservation within the context of the information of the municipal legislative archival document, aiming at the elaboration of classification code models and temporality and destination tables, and of metadata for documents of the municipal legislative process. The methodology used was the exploratory and descriptive analysis, based on the bibliographic survey. It emphasizes an approach on archival document, digital archival document, municipal legislative document and digital preservation and preservation of digital archival documents municipal legislative. With the analysis of this information, it was possible to conclude that the municipal legislative digital archival documents need from its origin to follow appropriate procedures for their preservation, from the implantation of a Computerized Document Management System, such as Reliable Digital Archival Storage Repositories and Access Platforms , that follow the requirements established by CONARQ and other bodies and collegiate responsible for archival management. In this way it will be possible to maintain the authenticity of the documents in the long term.
