ATT SKALA UPP PROCESSEN FÖR ATT FÅNGA DET FÖRGÅNGNA : En kvalitativ studie om ett biblioteks digitiseringsprocess / SCALING UP THE PROCESS FOR CATCHING THE PAST : A qualitative study of a library's digitization process

Strinnholm Rönnholm, Marlene, Fridén, Emma, Lindström, James January 2022 (has links)
The process of digitization of printed and handwritten material implies the conversion of information stored on physical sheets of paper to digital formats. Older and sensitive literature are today kept in separate library departments with limited access for the public. With aid from digitization this material can be preserved as well as become more accessible to the public. For libraries, the process of digitization is complex as well as time consuming. The amount of material that is to be digitized is voluminous to a point where if the process continues at the same pace, the process willcontinue for decades. This study aims to look into how a Swedish library works with the process of digitization of printed and handwritten materials, identify its organizational challenges and potential points of improvement. The main question asked in the study is: how is the process of digitization of text materials carried outand which challenges and opportunities can be identified if the process were to be scaled up? To accomplish this the study used qualitative interviews, inductive approach and perspectives from process-based business development. The result and discussion found that the main strength of the studied process is today the internal logic that is partly based upon the small size of the operation. On the other hand, the operation seems to be vulnerable since most people working within the process possess unique expertise. This expertise cannot easily be replaced when someone is absent andcould disrupt or interrupt the process. In order to deal with this vulnerability, the process needs to expand. To develop the business, the study suggests that the process and its workflows need to be structured and clarified. This could be done through applying a process-oriented approach and anchoring established processes.
