As funÃÃes discursivas das recategorizaÃÃes / Discourse functions of the recategorizations

Janaica Gomes Matos 30 November 2005 (has links)
This research was delimited to the analysis of the occurred lexical recategorizations through direct co-referential anaphoras. We adopt the theoretical perspective of that the searched phenomenon is placed in the activity discourse of referencing, conceived as a (re) construction of the reality, happened of the interaction between the speakers, in a intersubjective way. We proposed one classification of the possible functions assumed for the recategorizations in different discourse contexts. For such end, we approached, initially, the classifying proposal by Cavalcante (2003) about referential expressions, that has been used as a base of our functional proposal about recategorizations. From this, we retook the pioneer analysis by ApothÃloz and Reichler-BÃguelin (1995) about recategorizations, and we discussed the works by Tavares (2003) and Lima (2003), based on the two authors. We contemplated, basically, the suggestion by Koch (2004) about cognitive and discourse functions of the lexical referential expressions; in our proposal about recategorizations. Our corpus consisted of 80 texts was taken from different genres: 62 of them were chosen casually. Another part belongs to the bank of data of Protexto/UFC group studies. With the analysis of the data, we inquired functional traces of the recategorizations, that had come to compose our classification and it had taken us to evidence that recategorizations can be multi-functional in the speeches. Intonation Structure And Intonation In Svo And Ovs Sentences In Spoken Russian

Ghinda, Elena 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the difference between SVO and OVS sentences in spoken Russian, which is a language with flexible word order although the basic order is SVO. Two experiments were conducted to understand the nature of intonation. Experiment 1 shows that the Subject appears as kontrast in OVS sentences, and as background in SVO sentences. The F0 curve rises in the Object position when the Subject is kontrast in OVS sentences. The analysis of the results of Experiment 2 shows that the initial element of the sentence plays an important role in intonation. When it is kontrasted, it always has higher (Hz) frequency pitch accent than the final element. There is no difference between SVO and OVS sentences in this respect because the initial element has high pitch accent, whether it is the Subject or the Object. The verb has no pitch accent and it has a flat intonation regardless of the WO of the sentence (SVO, OVS).

Discourse Functions Of Students

Atas, Ufuk 01 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to analyze the discourse functions of code-switching used by the students and the teachers in EFL classrooms in a Turkish university. Another aim of this study is to find out the forms of code-switching used by the teachers and students and compare the amount and functions of these code-switching usages in different levels. In the light of these aims, two advanced classes, two pre-intermediate classes and one intermediate class were observed and video recorded. The data obtained from these recordings were transcribed using the transcription software EXMARaLDA and the following results have been obtained: 1) teachers and students use code-switching in the classes for educational and social reasons / 2) the most frequent form of code-switching was observed to be using discourse markers / and 3) there was not a significant difference in advanced and pre-intermediate levels in terms of the amounts and functions of code-switching.

Antonymní adjektiva v dětské literatuře a beletrii pro dospělé / Antonymous adjectives in children's and adult literature

Najberková, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
The topic of this thesis are adjectival antonyms in child-directed fiction. The primary aim of the thesis is to compare the usage of antonyms in adult fiction and child-directed fiction on the basis of a contextual co-occurrence of antonyms. The two areas of focus are the discourse functions of antonymy and the canonicity of antonyms. The thesis presents an analysis of antonyms identified in the context of 51 most frequent adjectives in a corpus of fiction written for children. The thesis is structured into three major parts. The first part provides a theoretical framework which summarizes the research of the discourse functions of antonymy and reviews the methods of measuring antonym canonicity. The second, methodological part, explains the methodology and describes the data used for the purposes of this study. The selection of data relies mostly on manual classification of the concordance lines. The third, analytical part, analyses and classifies the antonyms found in the corpus of child-directed fiction and compares them with selective samples extracted from adult fiction. A comparison of the most frequent adjectives in both corpora is also provided. Keywords: antonymy, discourse functions, antonym canonicity, ancillary antonymy, coordinated antonymy

“But as a deeper dive, I want to focus on this” : Discourse reflexivity in TED talks

Poškė, Eidvilė January 2023 (has links)
Metadiscourse, or discourse about discourse, manifests itself in both spoken and written genres. However, the focus of existing studies of spoken metadiscourse remains mainly on academic speaking (Hyland, 2017), whereas research on metadiscourse in spoken non-academic genres is much less common. The present study thus investigates, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the use of metadiscourse in TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talks, which are primarily monologic speeches aiming at knowledge dissemination among a lay audience. The corpus for this exploratory study comprises the top 20 most viewed speeches (49,000 tokens and 286 minutes of presentation time) presented in English at an official TED conference in 2019. This study attempts at shedding light on how TED speakers use metadiscourse from the perspective of the discourse functions by applying Ädel’s (2023) taxonomy of reflexive metadiscourse. The results reveal that TED speakers demonstrate a high level of audience orientation. The findings also indicate a strong focus on discourse organization, which underlines the importance of making this explicit in TED talks, thus providing guidance for the audience. One of the key observations of this study is that the audience in the genre of TED talks is complex, as talks are not only presented live when recorded, but also made available to a global, online audience. The thesis aims to contribute insights to TED talks as a genre, enhance the taxonomy development for metadiscourse, and suggest potential pedagogical implications for teaching public speaking.

英文限定性關係子句的篇章功能及其在英語教學上的啟示 / Discourse Functions of English Restrictive Relative Clauses and Its Pedagogical Implications

陳良鳳, Chen,Liang-feng Unknown Date (has links)
The findings of the previous studies on discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses are mainly based on spontaneous conversations and written narrations. Rare studies were found on the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in written data. The purpose of the present study, thus, is to investigate the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses in written expositions and argumentations by native speakers of English. Also, we study the use of English restrictive relative clauses in the compositions by Taiwanese college students. In particular, we want to know how the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses are related to their occurrences in discourse structures. Thus, our analysis includes considerations from four dimensions: syntax, semantics, pragmatics and discourse. We found that the majority of English restrictive relative clauses occur in the beginning position of discourse units. And they serve as a device to introduce their new head NPs as the topics in the subsequent discourse when occurring in such a position. Therefore, we conclude that the main purpose of using a restrictive relative clause is to introduce a new head NP as the topic when the new referent is firstly mentioned in a new discourse unit. Moreover, we examined English restrictive relative clauses in the compositions by English Department juniors to see if the factors found in native speakers’ writings are also at work in their compositions. We found that students have not fully understood the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses. Based on our findings, we offer pedagogical implications with the aim of hoping that students can learn the discourse functions of English restrictive relative clauses.

České "copak" a jeho anglické překladové ekvivalenty v paralelních textech / Czech "copak" and its English translation equivalents in parallel texts

Petrová, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis examines the Czech expression copak and its translation counterparts. It focuses on the individual functions and meanings of copak and the ways these are expressed in the English translation. The aim of the present paper is to determine to what extent the discourse meanings of copak as a particle are maintained in the translations and what means English uses to do so. Regarding the pronominal function of copak, the main issue is to examine whether the postfix -pak is reflected in the English translations or not and what equivalents are used in comparison to the forms without the postfix. Another objective is to analyse the English counterparts according to their formal representation and define their discourse functions in respect to the discourse meanings of the Czech originals containing copak. The research carried out in the present thesis was based on material drawn from the parallel corpus InterCorp. A total of 240 examples with the expression copak was excerpted with the English translations aligned to them. The analysis was divided into five parts, according to the particular word class of copak. Particles proved to be the most productive word class, as they provided 187 examples and 25 different translation counterparts, negative question being the most frequent one. The...
