A strange body of work : the cinematic zombie

Austin, Emma Jane January 2010 (has links)
This thesis investigates the changing cinematic representations of a particular figure in horror culture: the Zombie. Current critical perspectives on the figure of the Zombie have yet to establish literary and cultural antecedents to the cinematic portrayal of the Zombie, preferring to position it as a mere product of American horror films of the 1930s. This study critiques this standpoint, arguing that global uses of the Zombie in differing media indicate a symbolic figure attuned to changing cultural contexts. The thesis therefore combines cultural and historical analysis with close textual readings of visual and written sources, paying close attention to the changing contexts of global film production and distribution. In order to present the cinematic Zombie as a product of historical, geographical and cultural shifts in horror film production, the thesis begins by critiquing existing accounts of Zombie film, drawing attention to the notion of generic canons of film as determined by both popular and academic film critics and draws attention to the fractured nature of genre as a method of positioning and critiquing film texts. In this, an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on the methods of cultural-historical and psycho-analytical critiques of horror film, is appraised and then applied to the texts under discussion. The first chapter positions a working thematic and visual deconstruction of the Zombie as an embodiment of the abject, positioning it as a result of changing cultural discussions in fiction on the nature of death and burial. This establishes a thematic framework to apply throughout the following chapters, noting alterations to representations. The second chapter offers a historicised account of appearances of the fictional Zombie before American cinematic productions of the 1930s, critiquing claims that this is the only original production context for the Zombie. The third chapter charts the changing production contexts of American Zombie film until the mid 1960s, to introduce the critiques of authorial importance placed upon the works of George A. Romero, which are discussed in Chapter 4. This critique in turn questions established notions of generic canon and international influence, which are discussed in Chapters 5 and 6. These chapters question the idea of American filmic product dominance in national contexts, charting the discussions of the Zombie body found in differing national cinemas. It is shown that dialogues of representation can be both nationally specific and meant for global audiences, brought about by the changing production and exhibition markets of the 1970s onwards. This in turn challenges the idea that the American model is the dominant representation in the contemporary Zombie film, discussed in Chapter 7. The thesis therefore charts three separate areas for discussion, that of historical, cultural and production contexts that can be held accountable for changing cinematic representations. Particular attention is placed on the thematic and visual use of the Zombie within differing media and firmly position cinematic representations as indicative of wider changes in popular media and their intended audiences. The thesis therefore offers a detailed historical and cultural taxonomy of Zombie film, furthering previous studies, but also presents a more detailed exploration of cultural contexts than previous critics have attempted.

An historical analysis of the development of thinking in the principal writings of Malcolm Knowles

Henry, George William January 2009 (has links)
Malcolm Shepherd Knowles was a key writer and theorist in the field of adult education in the United States. He died in 1997 and left a large legacy of books and journal articles. This thesis traced the development of his thinking over the 46-year period from 1950 to 1995. It examined the 25 works authored, co-authored, edited, reissued and revised by him during that period. The writings were scrutinised using a literature research methodology to expose the theoretical content, and a history of thought lens to identify and account for the development of major ideas. The methodology enabled a gradual unfolding of the history. A broadly-consistent and sequential pattern of thought focusing on the notion of andragogy emerged. The study revealed that after the initial phases of exploratory thinking, Knowles developed a practical-theoretical framework he believed could function as a comprehensive theory of adult learning. As his thinking progressed, his theory developed into a unified framework for human resource development and, later, into a model for the development of self-directed lifelong learners. The study traced the development of Knowles’ thinking through the phases of thought, identified the writings that belonged within each phase and produced a series of diagrammatic representations showing the evolution of his conceptual framework. The production of a history of the development of Knowles’ thought is the major outcome of the study. In addition to plotting the narrative sequence of thought-events, the history helps to explicate the factors and conditions that influenced Knowles’ thinking and to show the interrelationships between ideas. The study should help practitioners in their use and appreciation of Knowles’ works.

Marcilene Gaspar Barros 00 April 2018 (has links)
Considering the argumentative content of academic discourse, the refutation is an indispensable procedure, since the argumentation presupposes disacord, debate and therefore the refutation, which constitutes opposition, disacord, necessary, therefore, for the argumentation. Under an enunciative approach, it is possible to correlate concession/ refutation, since two concession properties can be identified: the idea of opposition between two conclusions (r and non-r); the idea of a hierarchical relation between the contents as arguments for these conclusions. Given the prototypical compositional structure of the refutation (assertion/refuse/justification) and the concession/refutation correlation, we seek, in this research, to identify defining properties of refutation in academic discourse. To that end, we raise the following question: what the refutation manifested in introductions of doctoral theses of the area of linguistics has of peculiar that tells us that the authors construct their texts the way they construct? The corpus consists of eighty introductions of doctoral theses from sixteen postgraduate programs of the area of linguistics. For the data collection, we proceed to a cut, with the selection of the passages constitutive of acts of language of refutation, which are materialized through the articulation of the negative and argumentative elements. We assume the theoretical postulates of Moeschler (1982), Moeschler and Spengler (1982) and Ducrot (1981, 1987). For the analysis, we define the following categories: prototypical compositional structure, marks of refuse and effects of sense. We apply a prototypical model, organized from the studies of Moeschler (1982) and Moeschler and Spengler (1982), with elements linkers and ratifiers of refutation. We also identify oppositional marks and voices that emerge from refutative strategies to analyze the effects of sense of such voices through linguistic polyphony (DUCROT, 1987). The results confirm the assertion/refuse/justification structure, but they also point to a configuration with elements that show solidarity in a constant exercise of chaining and ratifying of the refutation. Denial of prior assertion manifests itself from the combination of different linguistic forms, however, marks that result in concessive strategies are more frequently used. The polyphonic analysis of the effects of sense allows the identification of the enunciators placed on the scene

Měření Čechoslováků. Česká společnost biotypologická a konstituční lékařství v ČSR mezi lety 1937-1959 / Measuring Czechoslovaks. Czech Society of Biotypology and Constitutional Medicine in Czechoslovakia 1937-1959

Musil, Jan January 2019 (has links)
This doctoral thesis describes the formation, activities and dissolution of the Czech Society of Biotypology (1937-1959), herein used as an example of impact of the constitutional typology (human typology science) on the Czechoslovak medicine. Human constitution science (in French and Romance languages called biotypology) classifies individual human beings on the base of morphological and physiological characteristics, with particular emphasis on forecast of future trends. The core of the science focuses on correlation between the physical appearance of a person and his/her mental characteristics. The Czech Society of Biotypology (Česká společnost biotypologická - ČSB) was founded with ambitions not only to study human beings, but also to increase their potential. The whole movement was therefore conceived as an example of a sanitation scientific program in accordance with the governmental interest in rationalization of population care. The methodology of the thesis is based on Foucault's concept of biopower - change of power strategies and their constitutive influence on the development and change of social relations, values and individual strategies of persons. The story of formation and dissolution of ČSB is interpreted as a consequence of these changes. The core of the thesis consists of a...

Visual Scientific Communication : The Use of Graphics in Contemporary Doctoral Theses / Visuell akademisk kommunikation : Bruket av illustrationer i moderna doktorsavhandlingar

<p>Although we live in a society abundant with images, the subject of illustrations in scientific communication seems to have become a blind spot. The study of scientific communication is an interdisciplinary field, where written and visual language is studied separately from one another. The aim of this master thesis is to break with tradition and look at the use of illustrations, their form and frequency, in a random selection of Swedish contemporary doctoral theses to make an attempt to explain why some scholars do not use illustrations as much as others. The found graphics are discussed in their faculty and departmental context, and the aspects of page design, electronic availability, and publishing tradition are also included in this discussion. By looking at some activities surrounding the author of a doctoral thesis, such as writers’s manuals, computer graphic tools, and the role of librarians, proof was found to support a genre and activity theory, as described by Charles Bazerman. This study presents an overview of illustrations occurring in dissertations in a way that was not done before, opening up for further studies about the form and function of scientific illustrations as important carriers of information.</p> / <p>Fastän vi lever i ett samhälle som är översvämmat av bilder verkar vetenskapliga illustrationer vara ett ämne som förblivit ett slags blind punkt.

Traver Navarro, Paula 19 November 2015 (has links)
[EN] This doctoral thesis, that seeks to recover the figure and work of the Spanish composer José María Ruiz de Azagra Sanz (1900-1971), connects with the current lines of research about composers that developed their creative works mainly during the Spanish postwar period. Despite being one of the most prolific and popular composers of his time, in the lyric theatre (paso dobles, couplets, revue¿) genre as well as in the Spanish cinema from the 40s and 50s, Ruiz de Azagra has been ostracised and the references to his work or to his person are rarely existing, although some academic studies and specialized publications stand out, as those by Casares Rodicio, Llisterri or Roldán Garrote, that speak about some aspects of his life and work in the lyrical theatre and film music. The main aims of this work are the presentation and the setting-up of a thorough and updated biography of the composer, as well as his work cataloguing. After a broaden field work that involved the consultation of a wide range of sources, foundations and documentation centres, a biography and a catalogue of the author are presented along with a general analysis of the musical soundtrack for the film La torre de los siete jorobados as well as scores of some compositions for lyric theatre from the 50s, in order to stablish the author's own compositional features in both genres. Finally, it is also included the recovered piano and voice score of the song Manola lá through the playback of the audiovisual recording from the aforementioned film. / Traver Navarro, P.
