Diagnosis of livestock production in three communities (Tunshi San Javier, San Antonio and Maria Auxiliadora) using the Chambo irrigation system - Guano

Montalvo Silva, Egresado Ángel 01 January 1997 (has links) (PDF)
During 43 weeks three communities belonging to the Chambo-Guano irrigation system (María Auxiliadora, San Antonio, and Tunshi San Javier) were studied. Each family had 0.662 ± 0.149 producing cows, 0.115 ± 0.048 dry cows, 0.381 ± 0.095 heifers, 0.252 ± 0.068 young bulls, 0.158 ± 0.052 bulls, and 0.568 ± 0.096 calves. The age at first mounting (21.696 ± 9.28 months) showed that the cows enter reproduction late. Of the cows, 71.94 ± 5.26% were of household varieties. To feed them, alfalfa was used at 79.86 ± 4.5%, undergrowth 56.83 ± 5.62%, corn stalks 48.2 ± 6.02%, kikuyu 19.42 ± 4.63%, crop aftermaths 18.71 ± 4.29%, zig-zig 17.27%, agave 9.35 ± 3.5%, ray grass (8.63 ± 2.98), banana waste 8.63 ± 3.28%, and oats 2.88 ± 1.96%. There were 280 ± 85.27 mother sheep, 64 ± 33.697 male reproducers, 174 ± 54.62 young sheep, and 198 ± 65.76 lambs. The age at first mounting was 18.45 ± 9.55 months and time between shearings was 12.62 ± 2.91 months with a production of 7.46 ± 3.99 pounds of wool. 53.24 ± 5.82% of the sheep were household breeds. As sources of food there were underbrush (46.04 ± 5.79%), pasturing (41.73 ± 5.77%), alfalfa (25.9 ± 5.25%), crop aftermaths (12.95 ± 3.99%), ray grass (5.76 ± 2.64%), and corn stalks (5.04 ± 2.65%). There were 672 ± 310.302 pigs. The age at first birthing was 18.108 ± 1.153 months with 8.237 ± 0.713 piglets per birthing, with only 5.536 ± 0.472 weaned at an age of 2.419 ± 0.156 months. As a food source, there was underbrush (56.12 ± 5.94%), banana waste (51.8 ± 5.85%), kitchen scraps (48.2 ± 5.95%), crop aftermaths (38.85 ± 5.26%), bran (28.06 ± 5.37%), alfalfa (26.62 ± 5.19%), and quiquyo (4.32 ± 2.33%). The guinea pig population was 3608 ± 683.653 with 2.52 ± 0.1 young per birthing. Outstanding food sources were alfalfa (79.86 ± 4.74%), chilca (34.53 ± 5.72%), underbrush (24.46 ± 5.18%), and kitchen scraps (11.51 ± 3.77%). The bird population was 1140 ± 226.856 animals. The majority are household chickens (47.48 ± 11.79%) used for egg production. Predominating foods were dried corn (72.66 ± 5.26%), barley (35.97 ± 5.62%), and wheat (1.44 ± 1.40%). The communities studied tend toward using bovine milk production. Even when the cows have low reproduction rates, they have important levels of milk production. The number of calves per birth could be adequate, but the levels of weaning are low. In guinea pigs and birds there were not any precarious forms of tenancy; possibly there are family property forms. It is recommended that the study be deepened in order to establish the influence of irrigation water, implement profitable programs of exploitation, and establish plans to help forward ecological tourism.

The "wean to finish" system is a new way to raise piglets in Brazil. Studies about ideal group size or ideal stocking density for raising these animals in the same building are rarely seen in the literature. Nothing is known about the size of the piglets group or ideal densities to raise the piglets in relation to their performance and welfare. This study has the objective to evaluate the welfare and performance of piglets raised in system wean to finish in different group and in different raising phases. The treatments consist of different number of animals and space allowance per pig: T1 = 22 animals (1.12 m2/pig), T2= 24 animals (1.02 m2/pig), T3= 26 animals (0.94 m2/pig) T4= 28 animals (0.88 m2/pig) e T5= 30 animals (0.82 m2/pig). The environmental variables of the buildings and outside them were evaluated such as: temperature, relative humidity and air velocity the THI index was calculated. The NH3 and CO2 were collected. The geostatistics technique was used to study the homogeneity of the environmental conditions. The sound pressure of the buildings was also evaluated, such as the behavior of the piglets, the surfaces temperatures, the cortisol salivar levels, the health status of the piglets (index coughing and sneezing and consistency of stool), respiratory frequency, frequency of skin injuries and their performance (initial and final weight, weight gain and feed conversion). The treatments was assigned in a completely randomized experimental design, a Tukey test (P <0.05) was performing for means comparison of each treatment using a statistical software for analysis (SAEG). For non-parametric analysis was used Kruskall - Wallis test (P <0.05) and the analysis was performed in the statistical software Minitab 15. The results of temperature and relative humidity of the air were within the expected data by the literature recommendations, in all phases of the piglets. The air velocity and the gases concentration showed an heterogeneous pattern in standard statistics results and in geostatistics, as expected in natural ventilated buildings. The sound pressure levels in all treatments and studied phases were below the recommended by the literature, 85 dB (A). For pig behavioral analysis, pigs spent more time rooting and lying down during phase 1. Lying down was also more frequent during phase 4. Analyzing the piglets behavior, it was observed that some behaviors showed up in a greater frequency depend on the piglet's age. The skin surface temperature and the health status were within the limits recommended by the literature. The results also showed that the best results were obtained in treatment 5, the group of the higher number of animals. Was concluded that all the treatments had the same welfare status, but the higher number of animals presented the best results of performance / Doutorado / Construções Rurais e Ambiencia / Doutora em Engenharia Agrícola

Shape me into your idea of home : representations of longing in contemporary photography and video practice

Harmsen, Corlia 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is motivated by an interest in a host of idiosyncratically interrelated phenomena that can be understood, in my view, as symptomatic of a primary interest in representing experiences of affect, loss, alienation and objectification of an “other”, which in turn, necessitates a critical interrogation of the notion of self. These phenomena include notions of the body (animal and human), private and public spaces, voyeurism, transgression, desire, fetishization, sentimentality and most critically, nostalgia as understood through experiences of homesickness and heimwee. My focus is on the affective potential of contemporary lens-based (photographic and video) art. I approach this study by way of three central ideas: the longing for home (the relationship between self/space); the longing for the body (the relationship between body/self); and the longing for the other (the relationship between self/other). I make use of psychoanalytic and feminist theory, as well as theoretical interpretations of photography and screen-based media, in the broader context of visual art and culture, to frame my discussion. As such, this study draws on the theoretical work of Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag to introduce basic concepts such as the relationship between photography and memory, and develops these to include ideas of the gaze, self and alientation from the self read through Judith Butler and Jacques Lacan’s image of the mirror phase; home and homesickness read through Martin Heidegger, Sigmund Freud’s notion of das unheimlich (uncanny) and Julia Kristeva’s notion of abjection; and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s objectification of the animal-other. This study is intimately linked with, and critically informed by my personal artistic practice, which focuses specifically on the photographic or filmic representation (projection) of separation, displacement and longing for an absent other (home, partner & domestic animal). I discuss my own work relation to selected examples by artists including Shizuka Yokomizo, Sophie Calle, Penny Siopis and Jo Ractliffe, among others, framing the art object and related processes as cathartic, mnemonic and talismanic; acknowledging the paradoxical aspect of photography as simultaneously distancing and acting as a trace of the real; and analysing the evocative (metaphorical or conceptual) allusions made possible by lens-based processes and their presentation as print and projection, image and screen.

A interface entre pequenos mamíferos silvestres e animais domésticos em área fragmentada do alto Paranapanema, estado de São Paulo, Brasil / The interface between wild small mammals and domestic animals of the fragmented area from High Paranapanema, Sao Paulo state, Brazil

Oliveira, Alice Soares de 12 August 2011 (has links)
Três lagoas farm, which is located in Angatuba municipality, in High Paranapanema (southeast of São Paulo state) is an area where exotic species were introduced, such as Eucalyptus sp and Brachiaria sp, which fragmented the habitat in the original Cerradão (a tropical savanna ecoregion). Once the human activity has been established in a natural environment, the contact among human beings and domestic animals with wild animal populations has increased. Nevertheless, the influence of such factors on the ecosystem has not been clarified yet. The aim of the present study was to research the exposition between wild small mammals and domestic animals of this area against infecctious and transmitters of zoonoses agents (Leptospira spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Lyssavirus, Neospora caninum and Rickettsia spp.). The raising of pathogens in the wild animals revealed positive serological results for Leptospira spp. (5,5%, n= 73), Rickettsia spp. (7,9%, n=38) e Toxoplasma gondii (16,1%, n= 56). In relation to the domestic animals, were showed 40% of dogs (n=10) seropositives for N. caninum, 20% were seropositives for Leptospira spp. and T. gondii, and 23.7% of dogs presented antibody titers less than or equal to 0,5 UI/ml for Rabies. The cattle (n=42) had serologic results positives for N. caninum (23,8%) and for Leptospira spp. (40,5%). 47.6% of the cattle had not been vaccinated or vaccination for the rabies virus was unknown. Of the 22 cattle known to be vaccinated for rabies, 36% were less reactive to serologic test. These results presented, besides evaluating the local sanitary status, they can contribute to the greater understanding of the interface between domestic and wild fauna in agricultural ecosystems.

Estudo epidemiológico e aspectos ecológicos da leishmaniose visceral canina no Estado do Maranhão / Epidemiological study and ecological aspects of canine visceral leishmaniasis in the Maranhão State

Costa, Andrea Pereira da 30 April 2015 (has links)
A análise filogenética baseada do gene SSUrDNA segregaram os isolados obtidos dos animais silvestres nas espécies Trypanosoma cruzi marinkellei (dois isolados) e Trypanosoma cruzi (sete isolados) / Demographic transformations and global climate change, added to people living in extreme poverty and without public politics are factors that create conditions for the for the constant emergence of new forms of disease expression. Among the main medical importance parasites, we highlight different species of Leishmania and Trypanosoma genres, protozoa agent of a broad spectrum of diseases. This study was performed in Maranhão, due to its location between the North and Northeast regions, Brazil, where is a great diversity of ecosystems, environmental interference and disordered population migration with eco-epidemiological change to level of endemicity of tropical diseases. The main objective of the study is to know the magnitude of the exposure dogs for Leishmania infantum chagasi from Maranhão State and their wild reservoirs from different ecosystems, besides to know the diversity of Trypanosoma parasites in wild animals by parasitological (isolation in hemoculture BAB/LIT), serological (IFI, DPP and ELISA), molecular diagnosis (SSU rDNA e gGAPDH). A total of 160 samples were collected for each ecosystemin the counties of São Bento (Baixada Maranhense), Cururupu (Mangue), Caxias (Cocais), Açailândia (Amazônia), São Domingo (Cerrado) and Barreirinhas (Restinga). To capture small mammals type cages traps were used (Shermman and Tomahawk) and mist nets to catch bats. A total of 7/960 (0.73%) samples were positives for L. infantum chagasi by culture and two cryopreserved isolated. Of the serological assays, 148/960 (15.4%), 126/960 (13.1%) and 568/960 (59.1%) were positives for DPP, IFI and ELISA. Samples were obtained from 133 wild animals of Chiroptera, Rodentia, Carnívora, Didelphimorphia orders distributed in 34 species. Blood cultures of these animals resulted in eleven positive samples and nine cryopreserved isolates from bats and marsupials. Phylogenetic analysis based on SSU rDNA gene segregated isolates from wild animals obtained in Trypanosoma cruzi marinkellei (two isolates) and Trypanosoma cruzi (seven isolates)

Epidemiological studies on multiple myeloma

Eriksson, Mikael January 1992 (has links)
Multiple myeloma is a painful and uncurable malignant disease with an increasing incidence and mortality in several countries, e.g., Sweden. Some factors are suspected to be of aetiological significance, such as ionising radiation and chronic antigenic stimulation in certain inflammatory diseases. A familial factor has also been indicated. Furthermore, some studies have demonstrated farming as an occupation entailing an increased risk for the disease. The aim of this investigation was to further elucidate the impact of different aetiological factors in relation to multiple myeloma. The knowledge of aetiology is always a prerequisite for prevention. A case-control study on multiple myeloma was performed in a high-inddence area, the northern part of Sweden. One part of this study dealt with occupations and different exposures. The results supported farming as being an occupation with an increased risk. Within farming two kinds of pesticides, phenoxyacetic adds and DDT, and contact with certain domestic animals, i.e., cattle, horses and goats, were assodated with multiple myeloma. Farming as a risk factor was also confirmed by a register-based linkage study using the Swedish Cancer Environment Register. In this study a time trend was indicated, with increasing standardized inddence ratios over the different time periods studied. Another part of the case-control study showed that rheumatoid arthritis entailed an increased risk for multiple myeloma, a finding earlier suggested from register-based linkage studies, but not from any çase-control study. A third part of the case-control study indicated an increased risk for multiple myeloma if any first-degree relative had a history of haematological malignancy, or other malignant tumour, espedally prostatic cancer, brain tumour, and renal cancer. A case study encompassing 942 patients with haematological malignandes in the county of Jämtland, Sweden, during a 22-year period showed that about 5% of the patients had at least one relative who also suffered from such a disease. An espedally strong familial occurrence was found in the group of chronic lymphoprohferative diseases, including multiple myeloma. /
S. 1-69: sammanfattning, s. 71-129: 5 uppsatser
/ digitalisering@umu
