Dominance and submission: how peer groups in South African secondary schools construct and utilise peer networks

University of Zululand, 2006. / Careful observation of learners by the researcher and constant complaints from educators about the learners' behaviour in school and attitude towards school prompted the researcher to investigate learner behaviour and discipline in a few schools. The researcher researched this problem from the perspective of peer networks. Adolescents were given questionnaires to complete about the manner in which they interacted in their peer groups. The researcher investigated to what extent adolescents cooperated, competed and confronted their peers, whether there were differences between the way in which males and females interacted and to what extent the interaction among these peer groups affects the discipline and tone of the school. A subsequent literature review was conducted to help establish the theoretical framework to serve as the background for the interpretation of the empirical data, help establish the most appropriate research methodology and to determine to what extent other researchers have helped solve the problems identified. The research instruments that were used to collate data from the empirical research were the questionnaire for learners and the interview guide for educators. The empirical survey "was conducted on adolescents in grade ten from a random selection of schools in KwaZulu-Natal and the educators from the same schools were interviewed. Some of the crucial findings were as follows: A larger number of females than males stated that it is true they do fall out with their friends. More females than males indicated that they often discuss their personal problems with their friends. One of the most important findings is that adolescent males seem to have so much more trouble than their female peers in reaching out for help when they are troubled. Higher percentage females than males indicated that they often share secrets with their friends. More adolescent females than males indicated that they often help one another with homework, assignments and projects. Higher percentage adolescent males indicated that they do end up in fights over members of the opposite sex and during sport. More males indicated that they just keep quiet when their friends bully other pupils. Larger number of male respondents has indicated that they do not step back when a conflict situation arises between groups. The researcher correlated gender and peer pressure and discovered higher percentage of males stated that they are more susceptible to peer-pressure than girls. More educators indicated that girls are regularly cooperative and give off their best in school work however when the researcher questioned the learners more males indicated that they were cooperative and that they give off their best in schoolwork There is a stark contrast in the view of the educators and learners.

Identity, power, and ritual "rape play" in the S/M community

Rape play is a type of consensual, ritualistic domination and submission, developed and enacted in a sado-masochistic (S/M) sex culture, which involves the appearance of force. There are two feminist theories that can be employed in a feminist analysis of rape play: dominance/radical feminism and libertarian/"sex positive" feminism. Libertarian/"sex positive" feminism holds that S/M, including rape play, is potentially compatible with feminism because the power dynamic between a dominant/"rapist" and submissive/"victim" does not draw on either practitioners' actual social identity and the power it possesses or lacks. Dominance/radical feminism argues that gender, which is socially constructed, can best be understood as a form of sexualized domination and submission, so social identity could not be dissociated from power in S/M. Nudity as a disinhibiting cue in a date rape analogue

The purpose of this research was to better understand the situational factors involved in date rape. Following the Inhibition Model of Sexual Aggression, I asked Can we observe disinhibition of sexual arousal to nonconsensual cues in heterosexual sexually nonaggressive men by introducing a strong excitatory cue, that is, female nudity? In the first study, young heterosexual men were presented with aural narratives depicting consenting and nonconsenting sexual interactions and nonsexual interactions while their genital sexual arousal was measured. Participants were also presented with pictures depicting clothed and nude women. A second study used videos depicting clothed and nude women exercising. Results suggest that nudity is an excitatory cue that elicits genital arousal; it might also have a small disinhibitory effect for nonconsenting cues, but only for moving images. A discussion of the research findings, implications for future research, and limitations to the research is presented. / viii, 146 leaves ; 29 cm

Understanding the harm of rape

The aims of this thesis are twofold: to provide an account of the lived experience of the harm of male-on-female rape in patriarchal societies and, on the basis of this account, to generate suggestions that could be of use in the recovery process for survivors of this type of rape. In order to reach these aims my thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part, I propose a phenomenologically based account of women’s situation as a group under patriarchy, according to which women as a group are subjugated to the hegemonic rule of patriarchal ideology. I argue, further, that the meaning, place and pervasiveness of sexual objectification in the lives of women under patriarchy typically results in women’s alienation from their bodies and creates an atmosphere of threat under which women qua women are especially vulnerable to rape. In the second part, I explore the lived experience of the harm of rape; focusing, first, on the reflexive process whereby a survivor attempts to understand how she has been harmed and, second, on providing explanations based on shared features in the lives of women for two phenomena reported to be experienced by rape victims in the aftermath of the trauma, which I call ‘shattering’ and ‘fragmentation'. My discussion of the lived experience of the harm of rape is meant to supplement existing accounts in the contemporary literature that, I argue, are limited to a thirdperson, objective point of view and so fail to provide a link between the harms they describe and the victim’s actual experience of these harms. Finally, I defend two suggestions for the building up of the survivor’s agency and personhood in the aftermath of rape—the deliberate therapeutic use of feminist consciousness-raising and the use of narrative understanding. / Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in
