Dread Talk: The Rastafarians' Linguistic Response to Societal OppressionManget-Johnson, Carol Anne 18 July 2008 (has links)
Opposed to the repressive socio-economic political climate that resulted in the impoverishment of masses of Jamaicans, the Jamaican Rastafarians developed a language to resist societal oppression. This study examines that language--Dread Talk--as resistive language. Having determined that the other variations spoken in their community--Standard Jamaican English and Jamaican Creole--were inadequate to express their dispossessed circumstances, the Rastafarians forged an identity through their language that represents a resistant philosophy, music and religion. This resistance not only articulates their socio-political state, but also commands global attention. This study scrutinizes the lexical, phonological, and syntactical structures of the poetic music discourse of Dread Talk, the conscious deliberate fashioning of a language that purposefully expresses resistance to the political and social ideology of their native land, Jamaica.

Nebojte se! Téma strachu v synoptických evangeliích / Do not be afraid! The Topic of Fear in the Synoptic GospelsSamec, Pavel January 2019 (has links)
UNIVERZITA KARLOVA KATOLICKÁ TEOLOGICKÁ FAKULTA Katedra biblických věd Pavel Samec Nebojte se! Téma strachu v synoptických evangeliích Diplomová práce Vedoucí práce: doc. PhDr. Mireia Ryšková, Dr. theol. Praha 2019 2 Abstract The thesis deals with the topic of the fear in synoptic gospels. Fear is a phenomenon that affects every person and is subject of interest to several scientific disciplines. This thesis is focusing on fear as an emotion. The selection of gospel excerpts is narrowed to those containing call to overcome fear. The pericopes are categorized according to situations causing fear: fear of the future, fear of people, fear of tasks' difficulty, fear during miraculous apparitions, fear of death, and fear of apocalyptic dreads. The last topic of the thesis are general calls to overcome fear. The reactions of the biblical personalities are diverse and can be viewed as model attitudes inspiring modern society. In the introduction, the topic of fear is briefly characterized in perspective of psychology, philosophy and theology. The focus of the thesis is the exegesis of selected pericopes, thematically sorted into seven chapters ending with short recapitulations of the main ideas. After the generalizing conclusion, an overlap into spiritual life is suggested.

Bridging the Fantastical Gap: Dread and the Uncanny in the Score of "It Follows"Johnson, Kinley 05 1900 (has links)
"It Follows" (2014), written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. It chronicles the story of Jay, a college student who contracts a curse through sexual intercourse. The curse manifests itself as a human whom only the infected persons can see, always following at a walking pace, and determined to kill if it catches up. This thesis demonstrates the score's crucial role in establishing affect, setting, and character in a film with sparse dialogue and a silent monster. Moreover, the score creates a sense of the uncanny by complicating the binary between music and sound effect and fulfills the need to create dread without resorting to the loud or sudden sounds traditionally heard in horror films. The score's composer, Richard Vreeland, achieves this effect by drawing on both classical film scoring techniques as well as more modern horror scoring styles. It is this interaction between styles that enhances the viewers' experience of dread and horror in the film. This thesis analyzes how Vreeland's score for "It Follows" exploits the poetics of the fantastical gap, of the uncanny, and of musical semiosis. I primarily focus on the "Heels" theme and use of drones in "It Follows," tracing how these musical features blur the distinction between what is score and what is sound effect. I also examine the use of melodic themes in a primarily non-melodic score. By analyzing these elements, I show how Richard Vreeland uses both classical and modern scoring techniques to answer his own question: "Why is this scary? What could push that emotion even further?"

Pronominal `I', Rastafari and the lexicon of the New Testament with special reference to Paul's epistle to the RomansPalmer, Delano Vincent 30 November 2007 (has links)
Anyone familiar with the Rastafari movement and its connection with the Bible
is struck by the prevalence of I-locution found in them both. Because the phenomenon is important in the canonical Testaments, more so the New, this study seeks to investigate its significance in certain epistolary pieces (Romans 7 :14-25 ; 15 :14-33), the bio-Narratives and the Apocalypse, in their historical and cultural milieu.
The next stage of the investigation then compares the findings of the aforementioned New Testament books with corresponding statements of the Rasta community to determine their relevance for the ongoing Anglophone theological discussion. In this connection, the following questions are addressed: (1) what are the inter-textual link(s) and function(s) of the `I' statements in Romans? (2) How do they relate to similar dominical sayings? And (3) can any parallel be established between the language of Rastafari and these?
In sum, the study seeks to bring into critical dialogue the permutative `I' of the NT with the self-understanding of Rastafari. / NEW TESTAMENT / DTH (NEW TESTAMENT)

Illuminating a Tragic Miasma in Shepard’s A Particle of DreadThomas, Benjamin 07 January 2021 (has links)
Sam Shepard was a playwright who used a variety of stories and styles to explore and understand the country he called home, The United States of America. This thesis launches the process of understanding how Greek tragedy had influenced the work of Shepard in his explorations by looking at Shepard’s final play before his passing, A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations). Using the concept of miasma that has been established as important to Greek tragedy to analyze A Particle of Dread and its primary source work, Oedipus Rex, this thesis reveals the extent of the ancient tragic form’s presence in Shepard’s last play. To do so, I approach the work in a combination of theory and practice. I first use dramaturgical analysis of Oedipus Rex, to explain what tragic role miasma has in Sophocles’ play. This is followed by a mirrored dramaturgical analysis of A Particle of Dread to uncover and compare what place miasma (and therefore tragedy) has in Shepard’s play. Following this is the review and analysis of five performance workshops exploring scenes of Shepard’s play which used a combination of performance and lighting to physicalize that dramaturgical work so as to further it and hopefully reveal new aspects through their embodiment. This dramaturgical and practical work results in the discovery of how and to what end Shepard has chosen to use the Grecian content style to analyze and commentate on Western society. The work also offers the chance to compare how the engagement with pollution has changed from the characters of 5th Century BCE Greece to 2014 America, and what that might mean for 2020 onwards.

Web Penetration testing : Finding and evaluating vulnerabilities in a web page based on C#, .NET and EpiserverLundquist Amir, Ameena, Khudur, Ivan January 2022 (has links)
Today’s society is highly dependent on functional and secure digital resources, to protect users and to deliver different kinds of services. To achieve this, it is important to evaluate the security of such resources, to find vulnerabilities and handle them before they are exploited. This study aimed to see if web applications based on C#, .NET and Episerver had vulnerabilities, by performing different penetration tests and a security audit. The penetration tests utilized were SQL injection, Cross Site Scripting, HTTP request tampering and Directory Traversal attacks. These attacks were performed using Kali Linux and the Burp Suite tool on a specific web application. The results showed that the web application could withstand the penetration tests without disclosing any personal or sensitive information. However, the web application returned many different types of HTTP error status codes, which could potentially reveal areas of interest to a hacker. Furthermore, the security audit showed that it was possible to access the admin page of the web application with nothing more than a username and password. It was also found that having access to the URL of a user’s invoice file was all that was needed to access it.

重大疾病保險商品未來發展之研究 / A Study on the Development of Dread Disease Insurance陳秀美 Unknown Date (has links)
This study focus on labor people aged from 20 in metropolitan Taipei arena. By questionnaire interviews, we will study the customers' opinions and expectations to dread disease insurances from market demand. The analytical methods will be described as followings: Frequency Distribution, Factor Analysis, Cronbach α, One-Way Anova Analysis and Crosstable.
The study classifies the purchasing evaluation criteria of insurance as five factors such as “Cooperation situation and product profit margin”, “Past and surrounding experiences”, “Insurance premium and cooperate types”, “Emotion and service attitudes” and “Professional”. And explores the possibilities of the apparent differences for each factor to purchasing experiences and demographic variables. On the other hand; we try to make χ2 independence evaluation to purchasing & reimbursement experiences, purchasing motivation, purchasing intention, information resources, demographic variables and product profit properties. We found:
1.The evaluation criteria of buying insurance:
People more emphasize on “Cooperation situation and product profit margin” and followings by “Past and surrounding experiences”. And less emphasis on “Insurance premium and cooperate types”
2.The experiences, results and information channels for purchasing serious disease suffered insurance:
(1)The proportion of holding policy for serious disease is 60% or above. Generally speaking, the proportion of married people policyholder is larger that the one of single people. And the more the income increases;the more the proportion of purchasing disease suffered insurance increases.
(2)The main reasons of not purchasing or quitting are “Premiums are too expensive”, “Not really satisfy or understand the contents of insurance covered”, and “It’s quite enough for having public healthy insurance”.
(3)The main information channels to purchase insurances are “The promotion of insurance sales people”, “Relatives & friends introduction”, and “Cooperation group insurance”.
3.Product profit properties:
(1)For the options of dread disease insurance development, generally, there would be three items to be acceptable such as “Additional benefits of dread diseases”, “Combine with policies of other medical functions”, and “Additional options of payment mode”.
(2)The preferred payment way of premiums will be “Pay off”, “Life Amortization ”, and “Pay medical expenses by agent” and more acceptable.
(3)Most interviewees think that the reasonable benefit amount for dread disease insurance will target on between NT$1 million and NT$3 million.

Furcht und Zittern : eine Untersuchung zur Funktion der akuten Belastungsreaktionen von König Belshazzar in Daniel 5 / Fear and trembling : an investigation into the function of the acute stress reaction of King Belsazar in Daniel 5Neumann, Kai 02 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the narrative concerning King Belshazzar in Daniel 5. Dur-ing a banquet, a hand appears and writes a message on the wall. King Belshazzar’s reaction is one of horror. In the narrative we can find five physical reactions which can be identified as “acute stress reactions”. The question of this dissertation is, why does the author describe these “acute stress reactions” in such an explicit way?
Using the methodology of new literary criticism, it is shown that the five “acute stress reactions” of Belshazzar are a part of a rhetorical stylistic device to denunciate the King.
A broader look at the Book of Daniel shows that although the compressed nature of Belshazzar’s reaction is quite unique, it exists within a wider context which contains many similar “acute stress reactions”. A comprehensive examination of the whole Old Testament canon shows that many books contain descriptions of “acute stress reac-tions”, but none are comparable to the Book of Daniel. It can also be shown that the “acute stress reactions” as such were culturally acceptable but can be used by the author to create a polemic effect.
This dissertation shows that the use of “acute stress reactions” could be employed for various functions according to the intentions of the Old Testament authors. They can be used to characterize a given protagonist and thereby direct the sympathies of the reader. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / M. Th. (Old Testament)
