Development of a Method to Prepare a Test Fluid with Soft Particles in Biodiesel Fuel Blends / Utveckling av en metod för att framställa en testvätska av mjuka partiklar i bränsleblandningar med biodiesel

Bilindustrin är en av de största bidragsgivarna till koldioxidutsläpp genom fordonsutsläppnär de används. För att göra transportsektorn mer hållbar EU-politik dikterar att inkludera enhögre andel förnybara energikällor i den totala energiförbrukningen och ett sätt att uppnå det äratt införliva biobränslen i de traditionella fossila bränslena. Detta skulle minskakoldioxidavtrycket som genereras av bilindustrin på ett ekonomiskt sätt utan att göra storatekniska modifieringar i befintliga motorer. Scania AB har optimerat sitt bränslesystem för attuppfylla 10% blandning av biodiesel i normalt dieselbränsle.Scania AB är en lastbiltillverkare i Sverige med deras forsknings- och utvecklingscenterbeläget i Södertälje. De söker en lösning för att effektivisera sina bränslefilter i lastbilsmotorerför att filtrera bort mjuka partiklar som genereras på grund av nedbrytning av biobränsle. Syftetmed detta projekt kan delas upp i två huvudfaser; den första fasen är att utveckla en metod för attsimulera bränsleåldring och nedbrytning av biodiesel vilket leder till bildning av mjuka partiklarvid laboratorieförhållanden. Den senare fasen skulle vara att använda resultat från den förstafasen för att generera ett håravbrutet bränsle som därefter skulle användas för testning i enfullständig filtreringsrigg för att bedöma effektiviteten hos Scania-bränslefilter. Dessa testerskulle ge en inblick i befintliga filterprestanda beträffande nedbrutet bränsle och därmed kundebättre filter utformas för att effektivt hantera mjuka partiklar.I detta avhandlingsprojekt diskuteras olika iterationer och metoder för bildning av mjukapartiklar. Ett viktigt antagande baserat på verkliga deponeringsformationer från lastbilar överhela världen är att kalcium är en av de viktigaste orsakerna till bildning av mjuka partiklar.Resultat och bevis från tidigare avhandlingsprojekt har använts, modifierats och utvidgats i dettaprojekt. Nya metoder har utvecklats baserat på empiriska bevis från experimenten somgenomfördes under detta projekt som skulle förbättras ytterligare när Scania fortskrider meddetta projekt. Ett huvudkrav för ett håligt nedbrutet bränsle var att göra det stabilt när det gällersuspension av mjuka partiklar i biodieseln utan användning av konstant omröring för att simuleraförhållandena för bränsletanken i en lastbil.Resultaten som presenteras i detta avhandlingsprojekt är den optimerade metoden förframgångsrikt att producera mjuka partiklar och en arbetsmetod för att förberedatestbränslekoncentrat. Analys har utförts på testbränslekoncentrat i detta projekt för attkontrollera testfluidens livskraft för att utföra experiment på filtreringsrigg. Det har konstateratsatt tiofaldigt utspädningstestbränsle är det mest lovande provbränsleprovet som kan framställasmed de givna villkoren och tidsbegränsningarna. / The automobile industry is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions through vehicularemissions when in use. To make the transport sector more sustainable EU policies dictate toinclude a higher share of renewables in total energy consumption and one way to achieve that isto incorporate biofuels in the traditional fossil fuels. This would reduce carbon footprintgenerated by the automobile industry in an economical manner without making majortechnological modifications in existing engines. Scania AB has optimized their truck fuel systemto comply with the 10% blend of biodiesel in normal diesel fuel.Scania AB is a truck manufacturer in Sweden, with their research and development centresituated in Södertälje. They seek a solution to make their fuel filters in truck engines efficient tofilter out soft particles generated due to biofuel degradation. The aim of this project can bedivided in two major phases; the first phase is to develop a method to simulate fuel ageing anddegradation of biodiesel leading to formation of soft particles at laboratory conditions. The laterphase would be to use results from the first phase to generate a mock degraded fuel that would besubsequently used for testing in a full size filtration rig to assess the efficacy of Scania fuelfilters. These tests would give an insight about existing filters performance regarding degradedfuel and thus better filters could be designed to efficiently handle soft particles.In this thesis project, different iterations and methods of formation of soft particles arediscussed. An important assumption based on real deposit formations from trucks across theworld is that calcium is one of major causes of soft particles formation. Results and evidencefrom previous thesis projects have been used, modified and extended in this project. Newmethods have been developed based on empirical evidence from the experiments conductedduring this project which would be further improved as Scania progresses with this project. Amajor requirement for a mock degraded fuel was to make it stable in terms of suspension of softparticles in the biodiesel without a use of constant agitation in order to simulate the conditions ofthe fuel tank in a truck.The results presented in this thesis project are the optimized method to successfullyproduce soft particles and a working method to prepare test fuel concentrate. Analysis has beenperformed on test fuel concentrate in this project to check for viability of test fluid forconducting experiments on filtration rig. It has been concluded that 10 folds dilution test fuel isthe most promising test fuel sample that can be prepared with the given conditions and timerestrictions

Optimal Speed and Powertrain Control of a Heavy-Duty Vehicle in Urban Driving

A major challenge in the transportation industry is how to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. One way of achieving this in vehicles is to drive more fuel-efficiently. One recently developed technique that has been successful in reducing the fuel consumption is the look-ahead cruise controller, which utilizes future conditions such as road topography. In this this thesis, similar methods are used in order to reduce the fuel consumption of heavy-duty vehicles driving in environments where the required and desired velocity vary. The main focus is on vehicles in urban driving, which must alter their velocity due to, for instance, changing legal speed restrictions and the presence of intersections. The driving missions of such vehicles are here formulated as optimal control problems. In order to restrict the vehicle to drive in a way that does not deviate too much from a normal way of driving, constraints on the velocity are imposed based on statistics from real truck operation. In a first approach, the vehicle model is based on forces and the cost function involves the consumed energy. This problem is solved both offline using Pontryagin's maximum principle and online using a model predictive controller with a quadratic program formulation. Simulations show that 7 % energy can be saved without increasing the trip time nor deviating from a normal way of driving. In a second approach, the vehicle model is extended to include an engine and a gearbox with the objective of minimizing the fuel consumption. A fuel map for the engine and a polynomial function for the gearbox losses are extracted from experimental data and used in the model. This problem is solved using dynamic programming taking into consideration gear changes, coasting with gear and coasting in neutral. Simulations show that by allowing the use of coasting in neutral gear, 13 % fuel can be saved without increasing the trip time or deviating from a normal way of driving. Finally, an implementation of a rule-based controller into an advanced vehicle model in highway driving is performed. The controller identifies sections of downhills where fuel can be saved by coasting in neutral gear. / En stor utmaning för transportsektorn är hur utsläppen av växthusgaser ska minskas. Detta kan åstadkommas i fordon genom att köra bränslesnålare. En nyligen utvecklad teknik som har varit framgångsrik i att minska bränsleförbrukningen är framförhållningsreglering, som använder framtida förhållanden så som vägtopografi. I denna avhandling används liknande metoder för att minska bränsleförbrukningen i tunga fordon som kör i miljöer där önskad och tvingad hastighet varierar. Fokus ligger framförallt på fordon i stadskörning, där hastigheten måste varieras beroende på bland annat hastighetsbegränsningar och korsningar. Denna typ av körning formuleras här som optimala reglerproblem. För att hindra fordonet från att avvika för mycket från ett normalt körbeteende sätts begränsningar på tillåten hastighet baserat på statistik från verklig körning. Problemet angrips först genom att använda en fordonsmodell baserad på krafter och en kriteriefunktion innehållande energiförbrukning. Shock Tube Ignition Studies of Renewable Diesel Fuels for Medium and Heavy-Duty Transportation

Currently extensive research on alternative fuels is being conducted due to their increasing demand to reduce greenhouse emissions. One renewable fuel studied in this work is dimethyl ether (DME) blended with propane(C3H8) as a potential mixture for heavy-duty engines used in semi-trucks. The blend has the potential to drastically reduce particulate and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional diesel engine operating under similar conditions. To develop the use of mixture, one must conduct detailed conceptual and simulation studies before progressing to detail studies in CFD, engine modifications, and live testing. For simulations, accurate high-fidelity chemical kinetic models are necessary. However, the validity of the chemical kinetic mechanism for operating conditions of a heavy-duty mixing-controlled compression (MCCI) engine was widely unknown until recent work presented here and published. In this work, we studied the ignition of DME and propane blends in a shock tube under MCCI engine conditions. Ignition delay time (IDT) gathered behind the reflected shock for DME-propane mixtures for heavy-duty compression ignition (CI) engine parameters. Testing was conducted for undiluted varieties spanning from temperatures of 700 to 1100 K at pressures ranging from 55 to 84 bar for various blends (100% CH3OCH3, 100% C3H8, 60% CH3OCH3/ 40% C3H8) of DME and propane were combusted in synthetic air (21% O2/ 79% N2). Several experiments were conducted at higher pressures (90-120 bar) to improve the model performance and accuracy. The ignition delay times (IDTs) were compared to recent mechanisms, including Aramco3.0, NUIG, and Dames et al. A common trend among the mechanisms was overpredicted experimental IDTs. Further studies were conducted by a sensitivity analysis using the Dames et al. model, and critical reactions sensitive to IDTs of DME-propane mixture near 60 bar are outlined. Chemical analysis was conducted on the NTC region to explain chemical kinetics which is critical for developing MCCI heavy duty engines.

Depuis maintenant quelques décennies, les conseillers en génétique jouent un rôle de plus en plus important dans le domaine de la génétique médicale. Leur apport ainsi que l’importance de leur rôle sont aujourd’hui incontestables. Leur statut juridique, cependant, demeure incertain et requiert une analyse approfondie. En effet, n’étant pas reconnue par le Code des professions du Québec, la pratique du conseil génétique se trouve conséquemment privée de la protection octroyée par ce Code aux autres professionnels, notamment celle ayant trait au titre et à l’exclusivité des actes. Devant ce statu quo et dans l’optique de la protection du public, l’étude de la responsabilité civile du conseiller en génétique s’avère nécessaire. Trois obligations principales ressortent de cette analyse, soit les obligations de compétence, de renseignement et de confidentialité. En ce qui a trait aux conséquences juridiques de la non-reconnaissance, elles ne sont pas négligeables. En vérité, l’inertie du législateur québécois floue la relation qu’a le conseiller en génétique avec les autres membres de son équipe multidisciplinaire, et ce, surtout en ce qui a trait à la délimitation des actes qu’il peut prodiguer. En effet, ce dernier risque d’empiéter sur certains aspects de la pratique médicale et infirmière, engendrant ainsi sa responsabilité pénale. Finalement, il s’est avéré important de chercher des pistes de solutions étrangères pouvant se transposer au Québec. Le cas de la France se trouve à être un exemple pertinent, puisque le législateur français a reconnu législativement le conseiller en génétique en tant que professionnel et a protégé tant le titre que l’exclusivité des actes de ce dernier. / In recent decades, genetic counselors have played an increasingly important role in the field of medical genetics. Today, their contribution and the importance of their role are indisputable. Their legal status, however, remains uncertain and requires further analysis. Indeed, not being recognized by the Professional Code of Quebec, the practice of genetic counselors is consequently deprived of the protection granted by this Code to other professionals, notably the exclusivity of their titles and acts. Given this status quo and with the aim of protecting the public, a study of the civil liability of genetic counselors becomes necessary. Three main duties of genetic counselors emerge from this analysis: the duty to proficiency, the duty to inform, and the duty of confidentiality. Moreover, there are several legal consequences for non-recognition of this emerging profession. Indeed, the inaction of the Quebec legislator has resulted in a confusing relationship between the genetic counselor and the other members of the multidisciplinary team, especially with regard to the delimitation of services which the counselor can provide. Indeed, the latter may infringe on certain aspects of the medical practice and nursing, thereby engendering his penal liability. This situation leads us to foreign jurisdictions in an effort to find possible solutions which can be transposed in Quebec. The situation in France comes as a relevant example, since the French legislature has legally recognized the genetic counselor as a professional and has protected his title as well as the exclusivity of his practice.

This paper deals with a comparison between the Czech duty of due managerial care of a member of governing body of limited company and the Irish non-fiduciary duty to exercise care, skill and diligence of a director of limited company (hereinafter also referred as "duty of care"). The paper aims to find out a possible way to improve legislation of the duty of due managerial care on the basis of comparison with the duty of care. The duty of care sets the ground for the comparison, therefore the paper deals first with the Irish legal status of the duty of care, which has been recently changed by the Companies Act 2014. Despite of the codification of the directors' duties, the core of interpretation and application of the duty of care still rests in judicial decisions. Nevertheless, the change of source and statutory wording of the duty means that the substance of Re City Equitable [1925] does not represent a good law anymore. The standard of care of Re City Equitable [1925] has been replaced by the minimal objective standard based on the British judgment Re D'Jan of London [1994]. The content of the duty of care is determined on the case by case basis, but in any event it consists of conclusions of the British judgment Re Barings [1999], which has been accepted by the Irish courts in restriction...

In the recent past South Africa saw an increase in participation in school sport concomitant with an increase in litigation awareness in society. Legal accountability based on damage suffered in the participation in sport has become more common, introducing an additional dimension to risk management by the educator. Learner safety is one of the key aspects in a school. Educator accountability with regard to the safety of learners in school sports is a focus of attention. An effective risk management programme to limit injuries and risks to participants in school sports must be developed. Risk management is the prime instrument by which injuries and the potential exposure of the educator or school to damage and legal accountability can be reduced or prevented. Some aspects of legal risk management are crucial for the educator's duty of care during coaching and the educator's legal duty with regard to the participants' safety. The educator must possess enough legal knowledge to successfully carry out his duty of care. This research will critically assess the safety strategies and the legal risk management of participation in school sports in South Africa. To be able to do this, I determined which common-law and legally accountable determinants can be applicable and what role they will play to ensure the safety of learners in schools. Firstly a literature study in legal risk management in school sports was done. This study found that the educator's responsibilities and obligations are determined by common-law and case law determinants. An empirical investigation was launched. Interviews were conducted with educators involved in sports in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district of the North-West Province. The topic was the current state of affairs in risk management in school sport. The participants' perceptions of legal risk management were discussed and their views analysed, whereupon findings and recommendations were made. The general impression based on the results was that the educators experience huge uncertainty and are seriously uninformed about with regard to delictual liability towards learners under their care. It was found that educators do not have sufficient legal knowledge to comply with the requirements set by law. Therefore the security of the participants (on grounds of their participation) and the educators (on grounds of their legal accountability) is jeopardised. It is recommended that all tertiary institutions develop training programmes to empower educators and student educators with knowledge of legal procedures in education. It is further recommended that the education department as employer together with governing bodies, principals and trade unions support such training programmes- now and in the future. Finally, educators, school management teams and governing bodies should be more risk-aware and more pro-active in preventing sport-related injuries, because of the ignorance regarding guidelines for risk management in sports and standards of security. The creation of a general duty to bargain in view of the SANDF judgements / Louis Lodewyk Krüger

Section 23(5) of the Constitution entrenches trade unions, employer's organisations and employers' right to engage in collective bargaining. For employees, collective bargaining is the key which opens the door to better wages, improved working conditions and an overall better standard of living to name but a few. The Labour Relations Act was promulgated to give effect to section 23 of the Constitution. However, in section 2 of the Labour Relations Act, members of the South African National Defence Force were excluded from the ambit of the Labour Relations Act (LRA). After the Constitutional Court regarded members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to be "workers", they also had the right to engage in collective bargaining. However, because of the special duty that the members of the SANDF have to fulfil namely to ensure the safety of the republic and its citizens, they are not awarded the right to strike. The question therefor is: How do the members of the SANDF compel the SANDF to bargain with them? The aim of this study is to establish if a duty to bargain was implemented by Chapter XX of the General Regulations of the South African National Defence Force and the Reserve. Firstly, the new dispensation of voluntarism under the new LRA is examined to understand how collective bargaining would work in a normal situation and not that of the members of the SANDF. Freedom of association is also discussed. The reason for this was because members of the SANDF also have to right to associate with a trade union of their choice by sections 18 and 23(2) of the Constitution. Under the new LRA, organisational rights also play a major role in the bargaining process and afford trade unions more bargaining power. The voluntarist approach followed by the new LRA effectively removed the duty to bargain from collective bargaining. As explained above, the special situation applicable to the SANDF and its members are not governed by the LRA and therefor a duty to bargain might still exist in this specific system of collective bargaining managed by the regulations. The duty to bargain is based on representativeness and good faith which are also examined in this study. To establish if a duty to bargain was created by the courts, an examination of the judgements of the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court reiterated that there is no legally enforceable duty to bargain between the SANDF and the South African National Defence Union (SANDU). If Chapter XX of the regulations is scrutinised, it can however be seen that there is an initial duty on the SANDF to bargain with a registered military trade union over matter set out in regulation 36 which include most if not all matters of mutual interest. It is further recommended that the education department as employer together with governing bodies, principals and trade unions support such training programmes- now and in the future. Finally, educators, school management teams and governing bodies should be more risk-aware and more pro-active in preventing sport-related injuries, because of the ignorance regarding guidelines for risk management in sports and standards of security. The creation of a general duty to bargain in view of the SANDF judgements / Louis Lodewyk Krüger

Section 23(5) of the Constitution entrenches trade unions, employer's organisations and employers' right to engage in collective bargaining. For employees, collective bargaining is the key which opens the door to better wages, improved working conditions and an overall better standard of living to name but a few. The Labour Relations Act was promulgated to give effect to section 23 of the Constitution. However, in section 2 of the Labour Relations Act, members of the South African National Defence Force were excluded from the ambit of the Labour Relations Act (LRA). After the Constitutional Court regarded members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to be "workers", they also had the right to engage in collective bargaining. However, because of the special duty that the members of the SANDF have to fulfil namely to ensure the safety of the republic and its citizens, they are not awarded the right to strike. The question therefor is: How do the members of the SANDF compel the SANDF to bargain with them? The aim of this study is to establish if a duty to bargain was implemented by Chapter XX of the General Regulations of the South African National Defence Force and the Reserve. Firstly, the new dispensation of voluntarism under the new LRA is examined to understand how collective bargaining would work in a normal situation and not that of the members of the SANDF. Freedom of association is also discussed. The reason for this was because members of the SANDF also have to right to associate with a trade union of their choice by sections 18 and 23(2) of the Constitution. Under the new LRA, organisational rights also play a major role in the bargaining process and afford trade unions more bargaining power. The voluntarist approach followed by the new LRA effectively removed the duty to bargain from collective bargaining. As explained above, the special situation applicable to the SANDF and its members are not governed by the LRA and therefor a duty to bargain might still exist in this specific system of collective bargaining managed by the regulations. The duty to bargain is based on representativeness and good faith which are also examined in this study. To establish if a duty to bargain was created by the courts, an examination of the judgements of the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court reiterated that there is no legally enforceable duty to bargain between the SANDF and the South African National Defence Union (SANDU). If Chapter XX of the regulations is scrutinised, it can however be seen that there is an initial duty on the SANDF to bargain with a registered military trade union over matter set out in regulation 36 which include most if not all matters of mutual interest.
