The Regulation of Growth Factor Signaling in Drosophila Development and DiseaseLindner, Jonathan Ryan 2010 December 1900 (has links)
Developmental signaling pathways have many diverse roles throughout the life of an organism. The proper regulation of these pathways is essential for normal development, and misregulation can lead to diseases such as cancer. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans function to modulate growth factor signaling in many biological processes by acting as co-receptors, or by influencing ligand distribution. The heparan sulfate proteoglycan Trol, the Drosophila Perlecan homolog, is known to modulate signaling in a population of neuroblasts in the developing Drosophila central nervous system. My studies aim to determine the function Trol has in regulating signaling pathways during development. trol mutants are examined to determine how various mutant alleles impact signaling in several different developmental contexts. The role growth factor pathways play during induction of a Drosophila prostate cancer model is also examined. Gene expression profiles are determined for two types of prostate model overproliferation. Trol is shown to be able to differentially regulate multiple signaling pathways during several developmental processes. The Drosophila prostate cancer model is also shown to have many characteristics similar to those of human prostate cancer, and that signaling and proteoglycan expression are impacted by aberrant overgrowth in the model. My results indicate that Trol is able to specifically modulate different signaling pathways depending on the tissue and developmental context.

Prioritizing Water Pipe Replacement and Rehabilitation by Evaluating Failure RiskLee, Sang Hyun 2011 December 1900 (has links)
Essential to human life is water. Drinking water, in particular, is of utmost significance for all living creatures including man. An examination of the transmission process of drinking water reveals the high importance of pipe lines. The water pipe lines delivering water today encounter serious problems. Corrosion has caused deterioration in pipe lines, which contributes rust to drinking, a serious water quality problem. In addition, pipe line failures have caused social issues, such as suspension of water supply. This study developed a model to estimate the life expectancy and residual life of a pipe based on the assessment of failure risk in order to evaluate the current failure possibility and predict when the pipe will reach the point of failure. The developed model for estimation of residual life by failure risk was used to assess the failure risk of water pipes based on the general data and pipe sources of the Chang Won City water pipes. The efforts to diagnose and evaluate water pipes are limited to the assessment of current pipe conditions, which is why they can easily determine the priority of rehabilitation based on the current pipe conditions but have hard time getting information about how the pipes have deteriorated to the point of requiring rehabilitation. The objectives of this study are: (1) develop a model for estimating corrosion rates and residual thickness of water pipes, (2) assess loads and stress affecting water pipes, (3) to estimate damage risk, and (4) calculate safety factors. Results of the study could help reduce rehabilitation costs and secure water quality after renovation. Thus it would contribute to the safe and stable operation and management of pipe networks by increasing the life of water pipes.

The Study on Construction for Social Indicators in TaiwanTsai, Wan-ying 24 July 2004 (has links)
Prior to 1960, most countries over the world used traditional economic indicators to represent their social status. Economists mostly used Gross National Product, GNP, as a measurement of the social welfare standard of a country or a society. However, with the progress of the development, the traditional economic indicators were unable to follow the progress of social welfares. Therefore, it made economists hard to measure the status of social welfares. Sen (1977) thought that the development of human beings is not restricted to the increase of average disposable incomes only. He thought that people should use the indicators with more information to measure the distinctive diversity of welfares. Bauer (1966) first stated the social indicators as a measurement of social status and trends. Then, the so-called ¡§Social Indicators Movement¡¨ was aroused by Bauer¡¦s theory. As a result, to measure the development of a society entirely, people could determine the development from the medicine, health, economy, environment, and welfare aspects.
In the researches about social developments, there were many discussions in building indicators of social welfare, quality of living, basic fulfillment, and development of welfare. The research is trying to establish a system of social indicators to measure the development from every aspect and selecting the social indicator index with representative indicators as a measurement of society development. Moreover, this research would analyze the systems of social indicators in Taiwan from 1982 to 2002 to see if the government made an appropriate allocation of resources in the executions of related policies.
The research refers to 20 related indicator systems in Taiwan and overseas as their times of quotes and principles of selecting indicators to sum up 9 probable indicators. Then, the Principal Component Analysis method and the Varian method are adopted as research methods to abstract factors. Moreover, there are two abstracted factors. One is economic and environment factor and another one is medical welfare and unemployment factor. The research uses weighted method to find out the synthetic indicators in Taiwan from 1982 to 2002. The weighted multiple gained from factor analysis for the two factors is 0.8353 and 0.1647. Based on the data mining and analysis from second information, three scores were acquired, economic and environment factor, medical welfare and unemployment factor, and entirely performance. Each of these three scores shows the trend and the change year by year. The last, according the result from this analysis, the policy and recommendation was brought up.

Autocrine activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in hematological malignanciesKuo, Ching-Yuan 09 September 2004 (has links)
Angiogenesis is not only essential for tumor growth but is also implicated in invasion of the cancer cells into the circulation, and growth of dormant micro-metastases into frank metastatic lesions. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in angiogenesis as well as in solid tumors. It also has a role for VEGF in hematopoietic neoplasms; although has not been fully elucidated. This study will examine the VEGF secretary activity of malignant cells in the patients with hematologic malignancies. Supernatants of cell culture after 72 hours & 7th day were analyzed for VEGF value by ELISA method. The purposes of this study are to assay the VEGF activity and its correlation with disease prognosis in various hematological disorders; and to detect the VEGF autocrine activity of tumor cells in sequential culture without any stimulation in vitro.
Results: our research samples were 75 specimens. The VEGF value was low in 13 cases of benign diseases, no obvious auto-secretary activity of those cells. There was no significant correlation between VEGF value and disease status in acute lymphoblastic leukemia; however, the cases were too small to had exact predict value (only 7 cases). In 17 Cases of malignant lymphoma, low D0 VEGF value (<300 pg) had good prognosis; those cases relapsed after treatment had high auto-secretary activity (high VEGF value of 7th culture day) and had bad disease prognosis, but there was no statistic significance. In 14 Cases of acute myelogenous leukemia, high D0 VEGF value (>150 pg) and high VEGF value of 7th culture day both presented bad disease outcome. In 16 cases of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), low plasma VEGF level (D0<300pg) was all in chronic phase; all cases in accelerated phase (3 cases) and acute blastic crisis (5 cases) presented with high plasma VEGF level (>300pg). Patients with high plasma VEGF level had 70 % (7of 10) in worse disease status (P=0.010). Patients in chronic phase of CML had low VEGF auto-secretary activity and most of the blastic crisis patients were with high VEGF auto-secretary activity and also had bad prognosis. (P=0.248)
Conclusion: although our study is a primary result, study cases are varied, but it still provide important information that VEGF has an important role in hematological malignancies. We will process further research of single and specific disease in the future to analyze the exact correlation of VEGF and hematological diseases.

Categories and Sources of Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compounds in Kaohsiung City using Factor Analysis.yang, Feng-chieh 17 June 2005 (has links)
Kaohsiung is a densely populated harbor city, in which the density of motor vehicles is also high. Since the temperature and sunlight is also relatively high in Southern Taiwan, tending to transform ambient volatile organic compounds to ozone thus causes high ozone events.
This study measured the concentrations of 63 hydrocarbon (HC) species from C2 to C15 simultaneously at the Nan-Chie and Hsiung-Kong sites in Kaohsiung city during the morning (07-10), the afternoon (13-16), and the evening (18-21) periods on three successive days in winter 2004. Results show that the most abundant species of Kaohsiung¡¦s air is toluene (43.01-60.95 £gg/m3), followed by i-pentane, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, benzene, n-butane, propane, and acetylene, in the range 9.55-16.93 £gg/m3, while the concentrations of halocarbons is 0.17-4.12 £gg/m3. Alkanes (44.7-45.9%) represent the largest proportion of the total HC, followed by aromatics (35.4-36.8%), alkenes (10.5-10.9%) and halocarbons (3.6-3.9 %).
The OFP (ozone formation potential) of HC species were evaluated based on the MIR (maximum incremental reactivity). Results show that aromatics (45.9-54.3%) represent the largest proportion of the OFP, followed by alkenes (17.7-37.5%), and alkanes (16.5-23.6%). The results from the factor analyses show the major sources of ambient HC in Kaohsiung city are the vehicle exhausts, industrial processes, solvent evaporations, combustion exhausts, and petrochemical processes.

A Study of Antenna Factor of Broadband Antennas for Electromagnetic Compatibility by simulation and measurementTien, Kai-Wen 22 July 2005 (has links)
The researches of this thesis are divided into two parts. One is to investigate the applicability of ANSI C63.5 in high frequencies of 1 GHz to 6 GHz. In general, the Standard Site Method (SSM) of C63.5 is usually used to calculate the antenna factors for the calibration of broadband antennas. Through the theoretical calculations, the numerical simulations and measurements, we found that the discrepancies between the calibrated results of horizontal and vertical polarization related to the un-dipole-like pattern in higher frequencies. Furthermore, we analyzed the relations of the antenna factors, the heights of receive antennas and the radiation patterns. We also found that the predicted calibration results can be close to the practical ones by including the effects of radiation patterns. The other research is to study the issue about the ground plane size of a test site. The ground plane size of a qualified test site must be larger than the minimum size defined by C63.7. For this reason, we provide a method which combines the tilted antennas measurement with a trapezoid shape ground. By using this method in the smaller ground size, we can obtain the measured results close to those obtained in the larger ground size. This method can effectively reduce the required ground size and then decrease the installation cost of a test site. Meanwhile, this method can be applied for both of the horizontal and vertical polarizations.

A study to generalize the critical factors of the regional industry innovation systemsChiang, Sheng-fei 11 October 2005 (has links)
¡§Science¡¨, ¡§Technology¡¨ and ¡§Innovation¡¨ are more important than the conventional productive elements in the era of knowledge economy. Lots of countries emphasized to advance the spread of knowledge in the innovation systems. Department of Industrial Technology also thought the relationships between governments, enterprises, research institutions and universities are important. Furthermore, the regional innovation system is the base of the national innovation system, but there were few research papers about regional innovation system. Therefore, we thought the regional innovation system is very important for regional developing and even the country.
We collected the critical factors of the regional innovation system by literature review and the analysis of cases. And then, we adopt Delphi method to collect the professional¡¦s advices and check the critical factors of the regional innovation system.
In concluding, we found out the factors below:
1.Governments should choose ¡§R&D¡¨ to be the orientation of the region, and supply the infrastructures to construct the good environment. It should establish relative policies and laws, and hold some exhibitions and conferences to promote the cooperation between the components. Central government and local governments should build good channel to communicate each other.
2.The research institutions, universities, and enterprises should have their own authorities and lead in the experts around the world. And they should spread the talents, technologies, and achievements between them. Furthermore, they should communicate with other international institutes. Having enough funds of R&D is also important for the research institutions, universities, and enterprises.
3.Finally, some results that we couldn¡¦t explain here is like intellectual property rights. Protecting intellectual property rights would increase invention and innovation, but sharing the knowledge and technology are also important for an innovation system. Consequently, the follow-up researchers could continue to research this subject.

How human resource managers and line managers can improve or corporate with each other to enhance working motivation factors of employeesChang, An-Chi 01 June 2006 (has links)
There are substantially researches talking about departments with various functions inside companies also external connections with different parties outside. No matter researching which perspective, employees are consistently playing a key role. Regarding to a company, there are some people with more or less specific knowledge backgrounds to be unified. In today¡¦s business world, knowledge apparently becomes a surviving tool. It is the reason that ¡§knowledge economics¡¨ was created and develop theories in ¡§knowledge management¡¨ field.
As far as managers concerned, employees are a group of people inside the company who should be paid attention to not merely on skin deep level. By means of having further sensitivity to motivation factors of employees, a lot of helpful methods can be found for win-win solutions. If companies expect employees with motivations, the initiative is to figure out how to let employees really make themselves ¡§motivated on jobs¡¨ instead of banking on only money matters. It is no doubt that line managers and HR managers should spend time working on this issue since one of the objectives to be managers is to manage people under authorities. This thesis would be practically valuable for managers on supplement by interview results because line managers, human resource managers and employees have extremely close relationships for organization¡¦s brighter future.
Key Words: motivation factor, line manager, human resource manager

Analysis on EAC Application of VRV air-conditioning SystemsSu, Lun 26 June 2006 (has links)
In Green Building Evaluation Indexes, the EAC has been adapted as the central HVAC system energy consumption criteria, has been assigned an energy saving factor£\4 of 0.2, despite of the actual power consumption variations existed among various system.
In this study, the PILV values of specific VRV systems were utilized, so that actual energy-saving factor £\4 can be evaluated. Furthermore, being lack of the chilled water distribution system, the weighting of power consumption percentages of a VRV system has also been changed into 0.9 vs. 0.1 for the outdoor and indoor units respectively.
The methodology established in this study has been justified by suing the actual VRV projects under commercial operations, which can successfully discriminate different energy efficiencies among various systems.
