A literacy-based approach to second language reading : using reading journals in collegiate beginning-level German instruction

Maxey, Karin Anne 10 February 2015 (has links)
In second language (L2) reading research, the impact and feasibility of reading linguistically and culturally unmodified texts with novice language learners has been largely underexplored. Some studies, however, have shown that reading unabridged texts with learners enhances their reading comprehension more than does reading shorter texts from a textbook (Maxim, 2002, 2006). This dissertation explores how, through engaging with authentic foreign language (FL) texts, beginning L2 learners develop L2 reading comprehension abilities and cultural understandings. To investigate beginning learners’ FL reading development, a reading journal (RJ) task was developed that asked students to read two thematically related texts representing different genres. In each of three RJs, 56 second-semester collegiate L2 German learners were evaluated on their ability to use textual evidence for text comparison and identification of each text’s readership(s). Data analysis triangulated students’ quantitative and qualitative pre- and post-treatment questionnaire responses with their RJ scores to address two research questions: (1) how students’ reading abilities developed while working with guided reading journals, and (2) how students’ understanding of culture and cultural learning changed during the semester. Repeated measures analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to look for relationships between scores, instructional time, and text type. Text and instructional time were found to be statistically significant with regard to students’ reading comprehension. Learners’ ability to use textual evidence in their comparisons and in identifying texts’ readerships was also statistically significant, though those abilities developed only minimally. Finally, learners expanded their understanding of culture to include more items pertaining to cultural values and perspectives, while altering their understanding of cultural learning to include reading as a way of exploring FL cultures. These results suggest that a literacy-based approach to L2 reading using unabridged texts integrated within an intact language course can prompt changes in students’ reading comprehension and understanding of culture. Implications for beginning FL instruction are discussed, particularly the need for approaches to beginning reading that support development in learners’ reading abilities and understanding of culture and cultural learning, and that better prepare students for more advanced language instruction. / text

Improving Access to E-Journals and Databases at the MIT Libraries: Building a Database-Backed Web Site Called "Vera"

Hennig, Nicole January 2002 (has links)
The MIT Libraries provide access to databases and electronic journals via the online catalog and the web. The Vera database was created in order to improve public access to a growing number of resources listed on web pages and also to help the staff more easily maintain these pages. Details of the database, called "Vera" (Virtual Electronic Resource Access), are described, including field definitions and how the database is used by both staff and public. The development of the database helped to improve access and made it easier to maintain a growing number of resources. It has also led to many further questions and discussions among the staff of the MIT Libraries about the scope of the OPAC and how tools like Vera should be related to it. / Co published simultaneously in The Serials Librarian, Vol. 41, no. 3/4, 2002, pp. 227-254; and: E-Serials Cataloging: Access to Continuing and Integrating Resources via the Catalog and the Web, ed. by Jim Cole and Wayne Jones, The Haworth Information Press, 2002, pp. 227-254. Republication of "On becoming a critically reflexive practitioner"

Cunliffe, Ann L. 2016 October 1924 (has links)
No / Critically reflexive practice embraces subjective understandings of reality as a basis for thinking more critically about the impact of our assumptions, values, and actions on others. Such practice is important to management education, because it helps us understand how we constitute our realities and identities in relational ways and how we can develop more collaborative and responsive ways of managing organizations. This article offers three ways of stimulating critically reflexive practice: (a) an exercise to help students think about the socially constructed nature of reality, (b) a map to help situate reflective and reflexive practice, and (c) an outline and examples of critically reflexive journaling.

Notícias de arquitetura nos jornais de São Paulo, 2000 a 2002 / Architecture news in the São Paulo newspapers, 2000 to 2002

Silveira, Eduardo Pio da 31 May 2007 (has links)
The objective of this research is to evaluate news published about architecture in the newspapers of the city of São Paulo: Folha de São Paulo, O Estado de São Paulo e Jornal da Tarde. News, articles, paragraphs, interviews etc about architecture were selected from the editions of these newspapers in the years 2000, 2001, and 2002. Based on the concept that very little is published on the subject of architecture and related themes, such as urbanism and industrial design, this research was undertaken in order to verify the accuracy of this hypothesis, and the possible causes and effects of this lack of information in these newspapers. All articles found during the period were catalogued, registered and analysed, and some were commented on during the development of the dissertation. Searching the critic and analyses aspects, most of the materials were taken from the cultural sections of the newspapers and the focus was on the way in which the theme of architecture is dealt with. The research also attempted to understand the capacity of these textual materials to be understood by the lay public (nonspecialised), and to inform, in such a way as to attract the lay reader to the theme of architecture in general. It was for this reason that mass communication vehicles were chosen, and this was the principal idea that motivated the research.

電子期刊的資訊組織與取用之研究 / A Study on Organizing and Accessing Electronic Journals

趙慶芬, Chao, Ching-Fen Unknown Date (has links)
加強電子期刊回溯年代,解決禁刊問題 / The traditional ways of organizing journals are mainly to cataloge journals, to write abstracts, and to index journal articles. Today, through the transmission of computer network, the electronic journals change the concept of information organization and retrieval. Moreover, the plural forms of information organization and access also causes users to search information in a more complicated multi-environment. It is more convenient that the electronic journals offer the full-text articles to scholars, and users are deeply fond of it. However, the electronic journals meet with the situation of multi-access channels and multi-information organization. On the one hand, the electronic journals deal with the bibliographic records, full-text files, and the linking technology of both. On the other hand, the information organization of electronic journals contains bibliographic materials in three levels of titles, volumes, and articles. All of them cause the difficulty of organizing and using the electronic journals. This study is explored through literary reviews and in-depth interviews in order to understand the problems and solutions associated with electronic journals organization in five university libraries and six vendors in Taiwan and see if they can support the access theory of the electronic journals. Based on the research findings , the conclusions of this study are : 1.a new model of managing the electronic journals is proposed; 2.an User-centered access of the electronic journals theory is presented; 3.the library provides access to electronic journals through channels in Taiwan; 4.e-journals information organization and technology of library in Taiwan is presented; 5. meta-searching systems have the value and influence on the electronic journals; 6. access channels to electronic journals are multiple and fork confusingly; 7.the problems of accessing to electronic journals are studied; 8.there are multiple and confusingly-forked electronic journal information organization and technology; 9.the electronic journals cause the problem of organization and technology to library. Finally, according to the results of the study, several suggestions are provided : For the library: 1.the channel of the electronic journals should meet with the user’s need; 2.the organization and technology of electronic journals should support the user's needs; 3.it is necessary to simplify and reform the management procedure of the electronic journals; 4. the maintenance of the systematic linkages can be automatic or system-by-system.; 5.it should offer the integrating articles with courseware and electronic reserves. For the vendors: 1. they should support user-centered access; 2. they should support the information organization of the electronic journals for the library; 3. they should understand the difficulty of how the libraries manage the predicaments of many systems to find the appropriate solutions.; 4. Meta-searching systems should strengthen the functions of Portal and meta-management; 5.Except for developing and selling the new system, they can help the libraries to get through the transition period from an old system to the new system; 6.they should promote the authority of content in academic electronic journals; 7. the coverage of electronic journals should be enlarged to solve the problem of embargoes.
