The renaissance of the minority press in Turkey : the role of the minority press in the emergence of leaders in minority communities in TurkeyMesutoğlu, Neşe 28 September 2017 (has links)
Agos, the bilingual Turkish and Armenian weekly newspaper of the Armenian community has published since 1996 and Şalom, the unique weekly newspaper of the Jewish community has published since 1947, have strategic importance in their relations with the representatives of the two minorities. The examination of the minority press in the emergence of leaders in Turkey's minority communities shows that the minority press can change the opinion of the majority and create new norms and a social movement. In order to understand the civil representativeness of Hrant Dink in the Armenian minority, this research tries to analyze the complex dynamics of the minority press and allows us to grasp Dink's approach as an opinion leader of Armenian community. Thus, we can demonstrate that the minority press is capable of creating a leader and a newspaper with a circulation of less than two thousand copies can be a known platform of the whole world and the editor in chief of this newspaper can be a potential source of influence.

The South African Media’s coverage of the Abu Ghraib Prisoner abuses: an ethical case study of two selected newspapersBuchinger, Christine 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Abstract: This study analyses the reporting of the Iraqi prisoner abuse issue at Abu Ghraib as reported upon by two South African newspapers from an ethical point of view. The focus falls on the issue of accuracy. Accuracy in war reporting of geographically distant conflicts as exemplified with this case study is a delicate and important matter, the media often being the only window for the public to learn of and about a conflict. In this case study, the two South African newspapers Cape Times and Mail&Guardian will be analysed to show the extent of their adherence to codes of conduct and exemplify the problematic practicalities in ethical reporting on international news. With the main focus of the study being on the ethical issues concerning accuracy, other relevant topics, such as ‘objectivity’, balance, fairness and truth telling, as well as more practical concerns will also be partially considered. The selected case studies are contextualized within the South African media environment so as to yield a better insight into the choices made on an editorial and/or newsroom level. As case studies, selected articles from the Cape Times and the Mail&Guardian during a three-month time-span are analysed using Day’s Situation/Analysis/Decision (SAD) model. Each article will further be analysed from the point of view of the newspaper’s own code of conduct and overarching ethical codes such as the South African Press Ombudsman’s Code of Conduct as well as in terms of the South African laws relevant to the media industry.

Social media in the newspaper newsroom : the professional use of Facebook and Twitter at Rapport and The Mail & GuardianJordaan, Marenet 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil) -- Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In a time of uncertainty for newspapers due in part to dwindling circulation, loss of
advertising revenue and declining readership, Internet-based technologies have continued to
grow. The unprecedented rise of social media, of which Facebook and Twitter are wellknown
examples, has not gone unnoticed by the newspaper community. Despite their initial
misgivings about the credibility of the information disseminated on these media, mainstream
journalists worldwide have gradually started to adopt social media as professional tools.
Social media serve as channels that help to funnel information towards journalists. Some
newspaper journalists also use these media to broadcast news and promote their personal
brands.
The continued use of social media on a professional level will arguably have an
impact on the daily routines and cultures within a newsroom. Academic research in this area
is limited, especially within the South African context. This study explores whether the
professional use of social media, with specific reference to Facebook and Twitter, influences
the processes and cultures of news selection and presentation at the South Africa newspapers
Rapport and the Mail & Guardian. A newsroom study within a social constructionism
paradigm employed a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies,
including self-administered questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and ethnography.
The main findings of this study were that the majority of journalists at Rapport and
the Mail & Guardian used Facebook and Twitter actively on a professional level – mainly for
trend tracking. The newsroom cultures were open and encouraging towards social media use.
Journalists were also aware that social media create opportunities for their audiences to
challenge the traditional roles of journalists and the realities constructed by the mainstream
media. According to the journalists from Rapport and the Mail & Guardian the professional
use of social media had not significantly altered their processes of news selection and
presentation.
joernaliste vloei.

An analysis of the views of newspaper readers regarding selected incidents of intergroup controversy in post-Apartheid South AfricaSibango, Babalwa 06 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the nature of opinions and attitudes expressed in letters to South African newspapers regarding selected incidents of interracial controversy, namely the Botes (2010) and Forum for Black Journalists (FBJ) (2008) incidents. A qualitative and quantitative content analysis of these letters was conducted to gauge the attitudes that writers displayed towards members of their cultural group (ingroup) and members of other cultural groups (outgroups). The results of the qualitative analysis indicated that individuals in a racial group have different perspectives of in- and outgroup members. The results of the quantitative analysis, however, showed that the majority of writers tend to display positive attitudes towards ingroup members and negative attitudes towards out groups. The dominance of positive attitudes towards ingroups and negative attitudes towards outgroups can be attributed to myths and discourses circulating in postapartheid South Africa and the current social climate in general. The study concluded that although individuals’ attitudes may differ from the stark negative attitudes displayed towards outgroups during the apartheid era, negative attitudes towards outgroups persist. It checks the influence of the Suplemento Literário (1956-1974) in the new literary supplement of the same newspaper. It observes how the resumption of the Suplemento Literário helps to bring back the pleasure of literature and knowledge in modern times, times of fast and fluid information. In order to do this, the trajectory of the Estado newspaper in the development of graphic and editorial reforms and in the creation of cultural supplements is described. The context of creation of the Sabático and its history during its first year of circulation are described as well. The research also analyzes if and how the content of the Supplement is linked to the publishing market and, consequently, to the cultural industry. It also discusses the relationship between information and knowledge from the 2009 OESP advertising campaign - "Which is the value of knowledge?" - that proceeds the graphic and editorial reform of the newspaper. The research is anchored in the concepts of cultural industry (Adorno and Horkheimer, 1947), journalism as knowledge (Meditsch, 1998) and liquid modernity (Bauman, 2001). The method of content analysis was applied to a corpus consisting of one constructed year of Sabático publications, from March 13 to December 18, 2010. The conclusions point to the fact that, although Sabático represents a place for literature (and the publishing market, in a broader way) debate in the Brazilian press, allowing the construction of erudite knowledge in its readers, it does not contribute to the increase of the pleasure of literature and knowledge in times of liquid modernity, rapid information, and it doesn't help to spread this pleasure either. This difficulty happens especially due to two factors: 1) the journalistic approach of the subjects exposed in the Supplement is sustained primarily by recent publishing releases or other events related to the present time, limiting the scope of literary appreciation; 2) the restricted target public of both the Sabático supplement and the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, which are aimed to the economic and intellectual elites of Brazil, already wealthy in relation to the access to books, reading and culture in general / Mestrado / Divulgação Científica e Cultural / Mestre em Divulgação Científica e Cultural

Intercultural rhetoric of English newspaper editorials: An analysis of the Daily Graphic and the New York TimesWornyo, Albert Agbesi 21 September 2018 (has links)
PhD (English) / Department of English / This study sought to analyse the discourse strategies in the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper as texts constructed in an African English as a Second Language (ESL) setting and the editorials of the New York Times of America as texts constructed in an Anglo-American English environment. The objective of the study was to discover the differences and the similarities that exist between the discourse strategies of the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper and the editorials of the New York Times. This objective is achieved by analysing five features of text. First, the rhetorical structure of the two editorials were analysed to find out the rhetorical strategies used in composing the editorials. Second, the micro-genre variation between the two editorials was examined. In addition, the thematic development of the two editorials was carried out. Also, the study investigated the rhetorical appeals preferred by the editorials from the two different socio-cultural settings. Finally, as newspaper editorials, the use of attribution was studied to find out how the editorials disclose the sources of their information to make it clear to their readers where they get their information from. The findings of the study revealed some differences and some similarities in the discourse strategies employed by the two editorials. The Daily Graphic as a newspaper published in an ESL setting in Africa exhibited the unique use of some discourse features that reflect the socio-cultural setting different from that of the New York Times as a newspaper published in the socio-cultural environment of Anglo-American English. / NRF
